Mini College Session #2: "What do DNA and Social Justice have to do with it?: The Ethics and Science of Genome Editing and Eugenics" presented by Aaron Putzke, Kathy Storm and Dale Soden We now have the power to edit DNA in ways we never have before. We are optimistic about curing diseases previously thought out of reach. But what price will we pay as a society? What risks are we willing to bear to perfect the technology in humans? Will everyone have access to the technology? And what happens when we decide that we want to expand genome editing into areas of intelligence, athletic ability or altering ethnic features? This is an exciting conversation touching on the biology, psychology and history of how we got here, the ethical dilemmas we face, and where we think we're going regarding genome editing and the future of the human race.

How, then, does our private information keep getting into the hands of advertisers or information brokers like Cambridge Analytica? This session looks at the technology and law behind privacy on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

The value of a Whitworth education extends beyond the walls of the classroom, lab and performance center. When your student enters their residence hall they are given the opportunity to engage with people of different backgrounds, values and personalities. Students living on campus are asked to engage in challenging conversations about their needs (e.g., roommate conflicts, homesickness, academic triumph and failure, etc.) and worldview in an attempt to help prepare them for a vibrant life after Whitworth. In this session, we hope to provide some insight into the conversations that shape our process of developing your student into a critical thinker and effective communicator.
Session #1 for Current Parents: "Your Student's Identity Development: The Social, Emotional and Personal Experiences of First-Year Students" presented by Phillip Allevato, Krista Maroni and Haley Williamson Resident directors from first-year communities explore a timeline of common experiences for first-year students while engaging in conversations surrounding identity development and social shifts. This timeline touches on the first six weeks of school, current experiences, and what to expect heading toward winter break. Topics covered include: friendship development; self-discovery; and what to know before your students’ first trip home.

He is co-founder of the Global Immersion Project to cultivate everyday peacemakers through immersion in global conflict.

Kate Shuster, Ph.D., presents a lecture, "Relevance and Rigor: Why Teaching about Diversity Is More Than an Add-On to Curriculum." Shuster is an independent education researcher and evaluator who has worked on multiple studies assessing curricular and co-curricular reforms. She is also the co-director of the Middle School Public Debate Program, the world's largest program for debating in the middle grades.
Lecia Brooks presents a lecture, "No Longer an Elective: Incorporating Diversity across the Curriculum and Co-curriculum." Brooks leads the Southern Poverty Law Center's outreach efforts on key initiatives and social-justice issues. She is also director of the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Ala.; the interpretive center is provides visitors with a deeper understanding of the Civil Rights Movement.

Morita-Mullaney, a 1989 Whitworth alumna, is an assistant professor of multilingual education at Purdue University. Her research focuses on the intersections between language learning, gender and race, which are informed by her racial and ethnic identity as a third generation Japanese/American.

Author Amy Leach presents the 2016 Endowed English Reading. Leach's work has been published in "A Public Space," "Tin House," "Orion," the "Los Angeles Review," and many others. She has been recognized with the Whiting Writers' Award, Best American Essays selections, a Rona Jaffe Foundation Award, and a Pushcart Prize. She plays bluegrass, teaches English, and lives in Montana. The essay collection "Things That Are" is her first book.

Grandin has designed humane handling systems for half the cattle-processing facilities in the U.S. and is a consultant with the meat industry in developing animal-welfare guidelines. In this presentation, Grandin draws from her years of research and her own experience with autism to provide insights into how animals think, act and feel.

Grandin is the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Jena Lee Nardella, '04, presents a lecture, "One Thousand Wells: How an Audacious Goal of Bringing Water to Africa Taught Me to Love the World Instead of Save It." Nardella is the cofounder of Blood:Water, which she started 10 years ago at the age of 22 with the band Jars of Clay. Following her vision and leadership, the organization has brought clean water access to more than one million people in Africa and provided healthcare for more than 62,000 people in HIV-affected areas. She is the author of "One Thousand Wells: How an Audacious Goal Taught Me to Love the World Instead of Save It" (Howard Books, 2015).

Hansen, an ordained Roman Catholic deacon, is an articulate speaker on the intersections of faith and art. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts and an Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, and he has been a finalist for the National Book Award in Fiction and for the PEN/Faulkner Award in Fiction.

Justice Mary Yu presents a lecture, "Breaking the Barriers: Being the First Latina, Asian, LGBT Justice on the Washington State Supreme Court." Yu was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court in 2014 and was subsequently elected to a two-year term. Prior to joining the court, she was a judge on the King County Superior Court for over 14 years and she also worked in the King County prosecutor's office. Before moving to Washington state, she was director of the Peace and Justice Office for the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Nydia Martinez, Ph.D., presents a lecture, "Honoring Diversity or Homogenizing Identities?" Martinez is a professor of Latin American history and Chicana/o studies at Eastern Washington University. Her bilingual and bicultural background and community involvement with Latina/o students and their families have deeply informed her research interests on 20th-century Mexican and Mexican American solidarity transnational movements.

Samuels is the director of the Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Her numerous publications include the book, "The Culturally Inclusive Educator: Preparing for a Multicultural World."
The Whitworth Endowed Reader Series features poet B. H. Fairchild, who reads from his work. Fairchild has authored many collections of poetry, including "Usher," "Early Occult Memory Systems of the Lower Midwest," and "The Art of the Lathe." He has won the National Book Critic's Circle Award, the California Book Award, the Kingsley Tuft Prize, the William Carlos Williams Prize, and he has been a finalist for the National Book Award.

Whitworth Professor of Political Science Kathryn Lee, Ph.D., presents the 2015 Constitution Day Lecture, "From Selma to Shelby County v. Holder: Voter Suppression in 21st-Century America." Lee is chair of the political science department at Whitworth and specializes in American politics. In spring 2015 she participated in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March, in Selma, Ala.
Colonel Kris Bauman, a former member of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's team, speaks on the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict and peace process. Bauman is an active duty U.S. Air Force officer serving as a Senior Military Fellow at the Institute for National Strategic Studies, National Defense University, in Washington, D.C. In 2013-14 he worked inside the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as the chief of staff for the senior advisor to the secretary of defense during the negotiations led by Secretary of State John Kerry.
