Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun! This time I’m featuring a couple of classic programs from The Phil Harris/Alice Faye show from October of 1948! Phil Harris was best known in those days as Jack Benny’s boozing band leader and he became so popular that he was gifted his own show in 1946! He starred with his wife, famous Hollywood actress Alice Faye and the show was a fictionalized version of their lives. Like Jack Benny, Phil Harris surrounded himself with some top tier acting talent with the standouts being Elliot Lewis as best friend Frankie Remly and Walter Tetley as the sarcastic grocery boy Julius. Listen for Gale Gordon in a couple of supporting roles as well. The Phil Harris/Alice Faye show doesn’t quite reach the heights of the Jack Benny program, but’s it’s still damn good! Enjoy! In honor of “The Marvels” releasing today, I have for your listening pleasure three episodes of the classic old radio series “The Shadow.” These episodes are from the premier season in 1937 featuring none other than the legendary Orson Welles as the voice of the Shadow, the man who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men. Delightfully campy with a solid score and some spooky stories, “The Shadow” is as close to an Old Radio superhero as you’re going to get! So Sayeth The Kendog!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more Old Radio fun. “X-Minus One” was a 1950s science fiction radio show that featured some of the finest stories in radio. Author such as Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison, and Isaac Asimov found their classic stories adapted to radio with thrilling results. “X-Minus One” is also great fun to hear because of it’s somewhat outdated concepts of how the future would look. “X-Minus One” has a polished sheen to it that makes it a fun listen on a Saturday afternoon. Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some old radio fun! In honor of the release of “A Haunting In Venice” I’ve decided to include a few old radio programs featuring that famous armchair detective Nero Wolfe! “Nero Wolfe” ran for only 26 episodes in the early 1950s and that always puzzled me because it was a great program with the legendary Sydney Greenstreet as Nero Wolfe and a various collection of actors as his trusty sidekick Archie Goodwin. The banter between Nero Wolfe and Goodwin is worth the price of admission alone but the mysteries are also quite good. ‘The Adventures Of Nero Wolfe” (as the series was properly called) is one of the great gems of detective old radio and I hope you enjoy these two programs as much as I do! So Sayeth The Kendog!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun! This time we’re featuring a classic thriller program from 1952 featuring narration by the legendary Orson Welles. The setting was Scotland Yard’s museum of death, The Black Museum. Welles would take an artifact from the museum and tell the sordid tale of how it got there, usually involving a gruesome murder or some other crime. It’s a novel way of presenting a show and it’s very entertaining. Enjoy these two episodes and enjoy your weekend! So Sayeth The Kendog!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here to honor the shady government shenanigans found in Denzel Washington’s third go-round in “The Equalizer 3” with some entertaining but decidedly less brutal espionage in the form of the popular Cold War old radio show “I Was A Communist For The FBI.” Starring Dana Andrews as Matt Cvetic (who was a real agent, by the way) an infiltrator into America’s Communist Party for 9 years. Although based in fact, “I Was A Communist For The FBI” was pure old time radio drama at it’s pulpy best, and Andrews is quite good as Cvetic, a man only a couple of seconds away from capture. Enjoy these two programs from 1952 and see “The Equalizer 3” in theaters today! So Sayeth The Kendog!

He was born January 20th 1896 and made it all the way to his 100th birthday. A brilliant comedian who realized he worked best as a straight man to his equally hilarious wife, the legendary Gracie Allen. Later in life, Burns would have a successful film career, winning an Oscar for the 1975 film “The Sunshine Boys.” Enjoy these episodes of classic comedy from one of the greats in old radio! Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a happy Season’s Greetings to you all! This week is a tough one for me as I have a ton to do not related to the wonderful world of movies. I’ll have some reviews on the last releases of the year in the coming weeks along with my top ten films of the year, but to tide you over I thought it would be fun to post a bunch of classic old radio shows with a Christmas theme. Some of the best old radio shows of all time were presented on Christmas and below are a few of my favorites! So grab some eggnog or hot chocolate, snuggle up by the fire with a loved one and enjoy the holidays with these old radio offerings. Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun. We’re sticking with the comedies this week with a couple of vintage episodes of “Fibber McGee & Molly.” Jim and Marian Jordan played the long lasting couple in Wistful Vista, with Fibber telling his tall tales and Molly patiently putting up with them, sometimes letting the air out of his balloon in the process. These two early 1940s episodes feature Harold Peary as The Great Gildersleeve, a character so popular he ended up with his own series, marking the first example of a successful spinoff. Enjoy these two classic comedies from Fibber McGee & Molly, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time! So Sayeth The Kendog!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some suspenseful old radio for your listening enjoyment. As you know, I’m a huge old radio buff and I like sharing my passion with you folks. Not only is it timeless entertainment, but it connects me to my departed Grandfather who I had the pleasure of knowing and being close to for thirty-five years of my life. He would have been 100 this year and it’s hard to believe fifteen years have passed since he left us. That said, he left a legacy of memories with me, not the least of which is my love of old radio programs, and The Whistler is definitely one of the better ones. Narrated by the title character, these stories were often morality plays in which the main character seemingly gets away with the perfect crime, only to have it come back on him/her in the most unusual of ways. Think of it as “Karma Theater.” Bill Foreman provided the iconic voice of The Whistler and, like Suspense, often employed the talents of some of the finest actors of the day. Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun, this time in honor of Sidney Poitier who died today at the age of 94. In honor of Mr. Poitier’s accomplishments both onscreen and off, I’m including a couple of Jack Benny programs featuring Eddie Anderson as Rochester, Jack’s long-suffering valet. In reality, the African American Anderson was one of the first noteworthy black performers on mainstream radio and Benny paid him handsomely. It was extremely rare in an era in which the two most popular black characters on the radio (Amos And Andy) were played by two white actors. With Benny’s help, Eddie Anderson was one of the first pioneers in the world of integrated entertainment. Enjoy and feel free to comment either below or on my Facebook page. So Sayeth The Kendog!

It’s The Kendog here with some old radio fun in honor of the new Amazon film “Being The Ricardos” which chronicles a tense week during the shooting of the “I Love Lucy” program featuring Nicole Kidman as Lucille Ball and Javier Bardem as Desi Arnaz. It’s a wonderful film and at one point it shows how Lucy got her idea for “I Love Lucy.” She was doing a popular radio show called “My Favorite Husband” with Richard Denning. This would provide the framework for what would become one of the most popular television series in history. So enjoy these two episodes and feel free to comment below or on my Facebook page. Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with some more old radio fun. In honor of the Christmas holiday I thought I’d give to you fine folks a couple of radio versions of the classic Frank Capra film “It’s A Wonderful Life.” The Jimmy Stewart-led classic is now a staple of holiday programming and it’s message of hope is more relevant than ever. Here I have two versions. The first features Jack Benny and his gang doing their slightly off-kilter version of “It’s A Wonderful Life” back in 1947. The second is is a Screen Director’s Playhouse version of the film from 1949 starring Jimmy Stewart in the radio version of one of his most famous screen roles. It also features Arthur Q. Bryan as Clarence The Angel. Good Stuff. So enjoy and Merry Christmas to everyone! So Sayeth The Kendog!

Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog here with a bit of an apology. Due to unforseen professional and personal circumstances, I was unable to give you the latest and greatest in movie news and reviews last week on this very website. I’m talking about “West Side Story” of course, Steven Spielberg’s wonderful version of the classic 1961 movie musical. All of the updates are subtle and change the story from something overly stagey into something more resonant and emotional! And the songs still kick all kinds of ass! Below are my segments from last Friday’s Pat Walsh Show. I am blessed that he wants me in a little earlier than usual these days, meaning I get some more time with my friends like Pat, Kendall and Mark (let’s throw the talented Lou Gallagher in there, too) and you get to hear more of yours truly. Howdy Folks! It’s The Kendog with some more old radio fun. This time we’re going with a couple of my favorites in the thriller genre. The first one’s a delightful little thriller entitled “The Bird Of Death” from the Haunting Hour program. The next is a neat creature feature from a program called The Hall Of Fantasy entitled “The Crawling Thing” from 1953 about a spider that has an unsual growth spurt.
