And we are just back from 4 days hunting in the berry patches in western Oregon. The blackberries are heavy on the vines and you can smell them when you get out of the truck. This time we had a sound engineer with us and our favorite guitar tech. The sound engineer stepped off the plane in Oregon and three hours later he had his first black bear. Hunting by himself in a berry patch. With us on this podcast are Chris Daniels, Marc Larese and Troy Rodakowski. We're sitting around the table in a dimly lit kitchen telling the story.

This is the summer we celebrate 250 years of America. I remember riding in a parade in Kalama, Washington, with my uncle Jack in a Model T Ford 50 years ago and I also remember becoming intensely interested in the Revolutionary War, the age of the mountain man and the American Indian. All of that fed into my fascination with firearms. In this episode we talk about side-by-side shotguns and reloading for the 16 gauge. And we talk about why muzzleloading now. And how to get into building blackpowder guns. And because all guns shoot better when they're clean, we finish by talking about cleaning for accuracy with Marcus from Modern Spartan Systems. At the end we talk about IP28 and the so-called Peace Act.

In this latest installment in our mini-series, How To Be A Bear Hunter, we talk to Dante Zuniga-West about hunting pumpkin-headed monsters. We talk stillness, visualization and readiness, as well as Dante’s favorite bear gun and loads.

Dante came to hunting by way of prep school in Bel Air. He is a mild-mannered high school principal, the offspring of educators, he holds a master’s degree from an art institute and he is the Backwoods Blaxican. He grew up searching out and reading hunting magazines then found his way into the Northwest. Now he lives on a farm in western Oregon and hunts bear and deer and grouse in the Coast Range.

We go back to our roots to bring you this episode from The Lost Nosler Tapes. These were the conversations I had with Big John Nosler back in the early 2000s. These tapes were the basis on which I wrote John's story - Going Ballistic and for the next book, Bob Nosler Born Ballistic. When I found these tapes, I digitized them to save the conversations. Want more? Get the book Bob Nosler Born Ballistic. Look for it at https://www.nosler.com/born-ballistic-hardcover-book.html

Our guest is Eric Lee, a cougar depredation specialist in western Oregon. When a mountain lion killed his wife's favorite goat, Eric realized he could do something about it. Next, he found himself helping neighbors and now this quiet unassuming man has found himself helping livestock owners in his area deal with problem lions. Cougar thru the doggy door. Cats that thrill kill. That spree kill. That hunt in groups. Some of what you will hear here is startling. Thanks Troy Rodakowski for co-hosting.

It's a critter gitter makeover. A lot of us have old bolt action 22s or shotguns that could benefit from some tender treatment. Here's how to get started.

It's fall turkey season and time to hunt grouse in and around the alders and the Douglas firs and that means mushrooms and other good foods from the forest too. Today we talk with Sharon Trammell, author of the new book Eat Off The Land.

Trammell is an award winning author, lifelong forager, fisherwoman, hunter and creator of the Forage & Thrive brand. Sharon blends storytelling, survival skills and recipes into everything she creates. Follow Outdoorsy Momma on YouTube and look for her web site at https://www.sharontrammell.com/

Coyote hunter by day, guitar tech by night. It’s our favorite coyote-sniping guitar tech Marc Larese from Tennessee, in this episode talking coyote hunting. This one is about how to get that coyote to commit. You want it completely sold, coming all the way in so you have to bark to stop it where it turns, not quite believing it was fooled.

You've found a podcast where we talk about big game hunting around the West and around the world, but . . . today we are talking about steelhead fishing and tying flies for steelhead and salmon. The origin of the Skunk steelhead fly has been shrouded in mystery. Till now. We have uncovered the origin of the Skunk steelhead fly and we believe it can be rightly attributed to one Rollin Dexter who tied the fly for the Eel River steelhead and then showed it to Jim Pray who showed it to Zane Grey. And stick around at the end of the episode for a public service we perform with a dramatic reading of a Craigslist Missed Connections courtesy Chris Sulak. We also need to discuss a recent mountain lion eyewitness report. From New York City.

Back in the studio with Trevor Barclay from High Desert Tactical to talk holsters and specifically the belly band, that polyester tummy tucking pistol pocketer and spare tire harness. Wear it under your t-shirt or a tuxedo. Don’t be afraid. It’s got Velcro! And the worst that could happen is it could snag a few navel hairs. You could stand a trim anyway.

How do we keep deer on a piece of ground? There’s a lot we can learn from each other. Levi Mallory from Missouri and Troy Rodakowski from western Oregon join us for this one to talk about food plots and forage blends. And how to keep does on the property year-round with food sources, water, bedding cover and escape cover. Maybe this isn’t East meets West, but it’s Midwest meets West for sure. Talking deer hunting in August as we look forward to October and November.

We sit down with morning person Mikal Cline, Oregon’s state upland bird coordinator and the proud owner of a new Brittany puppy to talk about how fire season meets chukar season in the West and why this looks like THE year to hunt chukar and quail. Wondering what happens to wildlife when 1 million acres burns in eastern Oregon? We look at it from the upland bird biologist’s perspective and start looking at the calendar and marking out days for chasing chukar and quail.

A long time ago, I sat down with old John Nosler and collected his stories on cassette tapes. Then the tapes were lost for many years. We found the tapes in filing cabinet back in the summer of 2019 and I digitized them and searched through the archives for stories like this. Now you can hear old John Nosler in his voice tell the stories of founding the company called Nosler. If you want a copy of the book John Nosler Going Ballistic or the fascinating story of Bob Nosler in Born Ballistic you can find them on the Nosler web site at https://www.nosler.com/products/accessories/accessories/books.html

These are interesting times, people. And if you are planning your hunting camp this year, you’ve got to think about camp security. I’m talking about who is watching your camp when you’re not there? More and more transients and drifters are living in the woods, in Washington and Oregon and Texas and New Mexico, and they want your generator to sell at the pawn shop and they’ll take your truck and your guns. Sometimes at the point of a gun. Don’t believe me? Well, let me tell you a story, the way I heard it from a state trooper. And then get serious about your camp security this year. Our guest is Trevor Barclay of High Desert Tactical.

Okay guys we go deep in this one. We talk to Linden Loren, the author of Your Hunting Healthspan, about how to hunt more, hunt harder and hunt longer, how to make hunting an integral part of your health and extend your life. We sip the coffee and tell the story of John Nosler sitting down with a Springfield 03-A3 to shoot a minute-of-angle at 1,000 yards. With a rifle he had never fired before. Bill Lewis was one of the founding members of the Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association park we call COSSA, a premier gun range located 24 miles east of Bend, Oregon. I worked with Bill Lewis at Nosler Inc. in 1997 and he was a big help in writing the book John Nosler Going Ballistic. Bill’s fifth grandfather was the Hudson’s Bay Company explorer and surveyor Peter Fidler. Bill is in the process of building a rifle similar to the one his grandfather carried between 1789 and 1820.

The story of Nosler bullets from 1948 to 2023. One of the most recognizable names in the hunting world, the Nosler story started on a moose hunt in British Columbia. After a month in the backcountry, John Nosler made it out to a café on a lonely stretch of highway where he called his wife and then sat down to sketch out the Nosler Partition on a napkin. Seventy-five years later, Nosler Inc. is in the 3rd generation of family ownership.

One of my favorite interviews of all time. We recorded this in February 2021. Bringing it back! Our guest is Heath Gunns, a Marine, a 10-year law enforcement professional, firearms trainer and outreach manager for Honored American Veterans Afield. We took the occasion of a bison hunt in Nebraska to go in-depth on rifle scopes, hunting optics, reaction times, firearm training, defensive use of firearms and the ethics of long-range shooting. We recorded this one right before heading out to the range where we each earned our Dismal River Club one mile shot coin.

In this episode of Ballistic Chronicles we are in southeast Oregon in the desert hunting antelope with muzzleloaders. 24-year-old Mikayla Lewis has looked forward to this hunt for 12 years. She built her own muzzleloader from a kit – a Traditions Deerhunter in 50-caliber. It’s the second day of the hunt and we build a brush blind from the bones of a wild horse, a bleached-out board and sagebrush. In this episode of Ballistic Chronicles we are in southern Colorado in the San Juan mountains. We have just wrapped up an elk hunt with outfitter Travis Reed. Reed is the owner of Western Sky Outfitters and Elk Quest. It’s about 2:00 in the afternoon, we have gone 3 for 3 on trophy bulls and now we’re talking about hunting elk in the breeding season. We talk calls and calling and what the calls mean. Travis has been guiding and outfitting for 20 years and his career has taken him all over the world. In this episode of Ballistic Chronicles we talk to Matt Staley who tells the story of tracking not one, but four mountain lions in fresh snow. The weather forecast called for a few hours of snowfall, followed by calm and clearing. The hunters were on the trail early and found the tracks before daylight. They waited, and returned to the crossing at dawn. In this episode of Ballistic Chronicles we talk blacktail deer hunting and review some of the best books on the subject. Specifically we’re looking at Columbia blacktail deer in Oregon, Washington and California and books from John Higley, Wesley Murphey, Boyd Iverson, Cameron Hanes, David Morris and Scott Haugen. If you’re planning a hunt for blacktail deer, you probably need a tune-up. Here’s why I think you need to read these books and gain these different perspectives. Blacktails make you better. You have to earn them. A top blacktail deer hunter is one of the best hunters in the deer woods anywhere.

In this episode of Ballistic Chronicles we talk about why you should create a ballistics journal for your new rifle. A ballistics journal? Well sure. I started keeping a journal for one of my favorite rifles in 2015. For that rifle, I have now six years of notes and observations. I know what happens with my favorite bullets from a cold, clean barrel and what to expect when the barrel is dirty. I’m not the first one to do this. The great African hunter and writer Finn Aagaard kept track of each bullet fired from his favorite rifles. Journaling, or chronicling, if you will, promotes an attitude of accuracy when you document each shot fired and what happened with that bullet. Of course, I have a lot of rifles and you probably do too, and maybe you’re not going to keep a journal for your 22 semi-auto, but consider keeping a journal for your hunting rifle. In this episode we talk about one of my favorite topics: hunting mule deer in open country. We look forward to these hunts and since the tags can be so hard to draw, we want to arm ourselves with the right gear and the right mindset. What are the things we are looking for on an aerial photo? What are we looking for at a water hole? How far do big bucks bed from their water? Where are they right now and how to separate them from the mountain mahogany or the sage brush with a spotting scope or a good binocular? This is it folks! This is deer season and these tags are getting harder to draw. Hunt mule deer and you will come to respect this animal. It’s a big game of chess and you only have a few days to get the pieces in place to put the king in your sights. In this episode we go back in time to 1946. My father-in-law Paul Parson tells the story of when his granddad trailed a huge flock of sheep up into the high country in Montana. Along the way the sheep had to be protected from black bears and coyotes. Granddad had a lever action Winchester 32 Special and two bullets in the gun when a grizzly came into camp.
