Welcome to the Community Strategy Podcast, I’m your host, Deb Schell. As a community strategist, community designer, and community leader, I've discovered how challenging and stressful it can be to launch a paid online community with little to no direction, support, or easy-to-implement tasks. Our vision is to help listeners create a community strategy that connects members, drives engagement, and creates collaborations through transformations. We believe that Social Media needs a shift from the current conglomerate technology designed to distract and disrupt - to deeper online social connection within purpose-driven, private paid online communities led by leaders who bring together like-minded members for transformation to better their life, career, relationships, and wellbeing. The Community Strategy Podcast offers interviews to inspire community leaders with success stories and community challenges by providing the tools that have helped find calm in creating a community strategy for a paid online community. We offer lessons learned, challenges we’ve faced, and tips on how to build an online community, have a successful launch, and grow memberships for additional revenue and passive income over time.

Today, I’m happy to introduce the Reverend Mike Travisano, an ordained Buddhist priest, mindfulness instructor, and integrative group therapy facilitator for an intensive outpatient program for adolescents and young adults.
Mike is also the founder of The Art of Monday Morning. This company provides mindfulness instruction to individuals and organizations.
In this episode, you’ll hear Mike’s story of starting a Monday Buddhist Mindfulness and Meditation community.
Mike spent most of his career working in tech software, but his life took a turn in 2020 when he joined the seminary to become an ordained Buddhist priest. Over two years, he studied and wrote about his thoughts and understanding of Buddhism.
He finishes with a “plunge,” which allows students to choose their path toward how they will implement their training. Working with those seeking help, Mike began providing support through mindfulness counseling.

Welcome to the Community Strategy Podcast.
I'm Deb Schell, the host. I'm excited to introduce today's guest, Eli Walker! She designs events and programs that build play into belonging in the modern world and how to use play to facilitate more engaging meetings.
Equipped with a BFA in Theater from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and as the founder and author of Drunk Yoga® (now The Uplift Experience), Eli pioneered the wellness entertainment movement to bridge the gap between #selfcare and #communitycare through her social yoga events.
Since then, she has used immersive storytelling and mindfulness practices to support tens of thousands of individuals and hundreds of institutions across the globe—including NYU and Columbia University, as well as Barclay's, eBay, Intel, Google, Pinterest, and Mastercard—in building meaningful belonging for themselves and their teams in our modern, remote world by leveraging the art of play in live experience design.
Eli has always loved helping people from different backgrounds get on the same page. Bonus points if she can achieve this while inspiring them to live joyfully, empowering them with new perspectives, and making them laugh simultaneously. When you work with Eli, you can expect to play, move, laugh, and walk away feeling empowered with tools to create a more connected world.
During this interview, Eli shares her entrance into the community industry. She describes community-based theater as an immersive performance art in which the facilitator and storytellers go into existing communities and use live storytelling theater to help participants tell their stories and bridge sociological barriers.

Welcome back to The Community Strategy Podcast! In this episode, you’ll hear the first half of a recording of an event in March of 2024 inside Community Builders with Purpose, an online membership for community builders.
During the session, Brian Helfman, the host of Third Nature, an online and in-person community, helped thousands of people cultivate clarity, creativity, and connection while having more fun. In addition to the community, Brian has consulted with organizations to help them build more connections and cultivate a sense of community.
In the second part of this discussion, Brian talks about how he built a team and continues to redefine terms of what he does.
Still feeling like a solo entrepreneur, Brian’s team is project- and deadline-driven, with a clear start and end date and time to reevaluate the project. When building a membership, Brian selected Circle, an online community platform that is flexible for
For Brian, an online membership isn’t a good fit. In the interview, he shared that the seasonality of timed programs works better for him and his team. It takes the pressure off “having to provide or generate value,” Brian said.
Workshops led by community members lead to connections and growth because the members are relatable. His success is uncertain, and his workshop is a vehicle to learn.
The “free time” is where the magic happens.
“Nudging people in the right direction and creating conditions for authentic connection and fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment to feel fully self-expressed,” Brian said.
The community plans to continue focusing on in-person experiences, however. There are enough people who will always crave in-person experiences. From Brian’s experience, the connection is cultivated more deeply when in person, but the online connection is really important.
Third, Nature values accessibility. Before attendees sign up and commit to the summer camp, many potential participants join conscious conv

Welcome back to the Community Strategy Podcast! I'm thrilled you are here and excited to jump into this new episode! Since opening Community Builders with Purpose, I've been reminded that we can learn much from our peers.
I've been looking for ways to support my clients and encourage them to move faster by focusing on a few or, better yet, one option at a time. I was looking for speakers to join the community when Windy Lawson shared her talk about "Thriving with TMI” (Too Many Ideas). Windy joins the Community Builders with Purpose in a pre-recorded presentation to community members.
Since 2017, Windy has been on a journey to help female microbusiness owners in the start-up phase or those who've recently turned a part-time side hustle into a full-time gig. You are in the right place if you are tired of chasing shiny objects that the gurus told you are the holy grail of success.
"Where do you seem to get your best ideas?" Windy asks at the beginning of this session. She works with women who are creating a business independently. In that space, she said that getting ideas or deciding on an idea "gets a bad rap."
We say things like we are "chasing squirrels" or "shiny object syndrome," which is why the idea seems to get the brunt of the criticism—Windy points out that ideas are powerful and are what push us forward.

Welcome back to The Community Strategy Podcast: Season Three! I'm thrilled you have joined us; I can't wait to meet you inside Community Builders with Purpose!
This season, you'll hear recordings of our live events inside this new community. For the first episode of the season, I wanted to share a recording of a live event I hosted with women to celebrate International Women's Day! It is a global celebration observed annually on March 8 to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of women throughout history.
We forge a better world by inspiring others to understand and value women's inclusion. When women are inspired to be included, they feel a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment. So, collectively, let's forge a more inclusive world for women.
Many individuals participate in events and initiatives to mark the day, including conferences, panel discussions, workshops, and awareness campaigns. International Women's Day is a time for celebration and an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the work that still needs to be done to achieve gender equality worldwide.

In this episode of the Community Strategy Podcast, you'll hear experts of the Creator to Community Builder book. Deb reads a chapter about community design and the architecture of an online community.
A well-thought-out community aligns with the group's host's vision, mission, and purpose. Leading an online community requires deciding how you want to communicate with your members and understanding how they enjoy connecting with each other.
When working with a client to restructure their community, I start by identifying a purpose for each area of the community. A common problem for many community builders is knowing how many destinations to have available for people to meet, connect, and engage.
The structure you establish will influence other design elements like your community’s culture. It will provide the framework for your host, leader, and/or manager to help your people build habits and cultivate rituals.
Think about how you want to communicate; your personal communication style is an important factor to consider. In addition, your community must be easy to access.

Due to the global pandemic, the world had to adjust to living in a bubble and withdrawing from in-person social connections. I don’t know about you, but the events of those years shifted my perspective on how I spend my time.
Most people I’ve talked with have shared that they’ve enjoyed exploring their hobbies, spending more time with loved ones, and building new relationships with peers with similar values, challenges, and goals.
For some, that means rethinking personal lifestyle goals. Many of us have looked at how the life we’re currently living stacks up to our “ideal life.” Noticing the distance between where we want to be and where we are… makes an impact. We start questioning what is accurate, and each person may answer differently.

A new season of the Community Strategy Podcast is coming this Sunday, July 30th, and I’m kicking it off with a preview of a recent interview with the Community Leaders Institute. Before I dive into that episode, Let me share some of this backstory with you first.
Back in 2021, a year after I launched a consulting business, I was looking for a community for consultants and couldn’t find one, so I created one. After asking on LinkedIn if anyone else does community consulting, I found a few people who raised their hands. I said they wanted to meet monthly and chat about what they are doing in their businesses.
Consultants usually see each other as competitors, but the group we started, now called The Community Consultants Collective, is a fantastic group of people. Now we are growing to more than 70+ members!
This episode will share excerpts of an interview with Brad Weaber, who leads a discussion about why to hire a community consultant with the CCC board members Todd Nilson, Carolyn Zick, Mathijs Vleeming, John Summers, and Deb Schell.
A few questions you could ask include:
Founded in September of 2021, the Community Consultants Collective is a watering hole for community professionals transitioning to freelance and consulting work to get support, training, and the tools to grow their expertise. Join for free, connect with your peers, and elevate your career.
The Community Strategy Podcast Season 2 starts Sunday, July 30th, with new episodes allowing you to learn about the Creator to Community Builder book, soon to be published in the fall of 2023.

Stop Putting Yourself Out There. Start Leading Dialogue.
During a LIVE Interview, recorded on May 18th, FCH Community Member Suzi Hunn, Founder of Teach Your Thing, joined Deb Schell, Host of the Community Strategy podcast to share her new workshop titled: Create Your Signature Talk.
Suzi’s mission is to help small businesses change lives by teaching what they know. Courses, workshops, and curricular materials are her jam.
She loved her 15 years as an educator at the Minnesota Historical Society. Since then, she’s developed engaging learning experiences for founders, authors, and corporate franchisees.
As a purpose-driven founder, how many times have you heard, “Put yourself out there!” The phrase implies a transaction, no relationship is required.
But cultivating more meaning, impact, and profit means adopting the habit of leading dialogue.
Suzi Hunn’s actionable talk will inspire you to take action on seeing marketing as a conversation:
Quote: “If you can create a way to connect your people to each other using your content as a guide, that’s where your power often lies.”For full show notes, click here.

In this episode of the Find Calm Here Podcast, Hudson Phillips, the host of ScriptBlast, shares insights on how he discovered community, why he launched his community on the Mighty Networks, and how he’s learned so much in just a year of hosting this online community.
His community ScriptBlast brings together screenwriters who struggle with navigating the ups and downs of the journey to help them write with ease and joy.
As an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker, Hudson has produced the feature film This World Alone, released in May of this year.
With this experience and as the Creative Director for Uplink Marketing, he brings over 25 years of design, branding, copywriting, and marketing experience to the communities he leads.
With his community-building experience, he also supports Village Canopy Life, an online community working to transform the lives of children and communities in rural Kenya.
In this episode we discuss:
2:37: Phillips begins by explaining what got him interested in community building: 16 years of struggling with breaking into the screenwriting world and not feeling like he had a safe space to talk about struggles. ScriptBlast started as a social media account, but already being part of a Mighty Network, he made the switch.
11:35: Deb and Phillip compare the passive nature of social media to an active community. Phillip touches on how by listening to his community, he was able to alleviate the pressure of creating content when what the community wanted was engaging events.
15:20: Phillip talks about ScriptBlast, his screenwriting community, and CanopyLife, a non-profit client community that runs an entrepreneurial school in Kenya. He also touches on re-assessing goals as to why the group exists when managing engagement expectations.
22:09: There are many factors that go into community engagement, as Phillip discusses people who prefer being silent observers and also the seasonality of summer months being quiet while people are busy and traveling.

In this episode of the Find Calm Here Podcast, Callie Mickle, a member of Location Indie, a Mighty Network shares her experience in being a community member in our second part of this three-part series spotlighting the Location Indie Community.
She recently quit her job and is now location independent thanks to the support of the Lifestyle Launch Academy program inside the Location Indie Community.
Callie discovered her love for travel after a panic attack as a middle-school student which developed into agoraphobia, keeping her inside her home for two years. Later in her life, she found the strength to face her fears and wanted to make up for the loss of time and opportunities. She joined Location Indie in December of 2020 and has since been able to learn through the community groups how to build, launch, and grow her virtual assistant business and is now working full time as a location independent virtual assistant
During this episode we discuss:
13:01 The community was a game-changer for Callie when she discovered there are other people out there doing what she wanted to do - living an unconventional life and having the community was the biggest reason she made changes in her life.
18:31 Callie shares her onboarding experience as a new member of the community and that she felt welcomed into space right from the beginning. Creating a safe space for members to feel comfortable is key to encouraging members to connect and share their experiences.
22:30 We chat about the importance of connecting with smaller groups within a Mighty Network and how that small cohort can support members above the membership benefits.
29:53 Callie shares the importance of events, what features she likes, and a feature she missed, as well as content, because she wasn’t following a topic. She mentioned that she loves fresh, new events to mix things up for members.

He shares these experiences on his YouTube Channel and Blog**
“It’s about having fun and not taking ourselves so damn seriously all the time. It’s about finding your inner badass and defeating the dark side of the Force,” Jason says on his blog.
He had to figure out how to get out of his own way and start exploring and over the past three years, after paying off $50K in debt, he’s challenged himself with international travel. He left a corporate job, learned how to work remotely and become a solopreneur, bought a house, sold that house, bought a van, sold that van, built out his Jeep, and is now he's a digital nomad!
Recently he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and has become an advocate for others with the disease. He shares all of these experiences and also shares how he’s been able to balance work, life, and travel all while working within a budget.

If you’ve never experienced floating before, or have no idea what that is, or you are a regular to a float spa, this episode is one you don’t want to miss. I recently went down to Baltimore for the weekend and experienced the Red Lotus Float Spa for myself, meeting Marie Bittinger, the co-owner. We had chatted after my float and I later invited her to share her story here in this interview.
Marie started manifesting Red Lotus Float Spa in January of 2018 and has been running the operations with the help of her husband and three part-time employees since opening in November of 2019. Her mission is to create a safe atmosphere that nurtures mindful reflection, curiosity, playfulness, and healing.
Floating is a form of sensory deprivation. And, while that may sound scary on the surface, the reduction of our external senses, allows the mind and body to focus on itself, creating what some describe to be a “euphoric” experience or sensory enhancement. Flotation Therapy provides an array of benefits depending on your wellness goals. Whether you are looking to detox, recover or meditate, floating can be an important component in balancing your health.

On this episode of the Find Calm Here Podcast, I share my gratitude for the many people who've helped support the creation and implementation of the Find Calm Here Community, live workshops, and interactive virtual events throughout the past year.
If you are new here, I’d like to take you through the journey of how this community was built, and give credit to those who’ve helped support this little idea I’ve had into what it is today, and what I hope it will become for the future.
The very first Find Calm Here “event” was an “open house” at my apartment, to share how I’ve created a space of calm, with the products and services I’ve come to depend on for helping me get through tough days, deal with depression, cope with loneliness, and become resilient.
A close friend, Lisa, who started her own interior design company, helped me create a mood board for my apartment.
Years of learning the benefits of essential oils, thanks to my friend Leah, I invited her to speak about how essential oils have helped her manage stress and offer relief for physical and emotional ailments.
A dear friend, Elaine is a brilliant painter and mixed-media artist who’s been a bright light in some dark times. Her friendship has been really valuable to me and when seeing a piece that fits perfectly, I knew it was right.
Attending the workshop, she shared her unique process and detailed this piece for inspiring others to incorporate meaningful artwork intentionally in their spaces for finding calm
Karen, a yoga instructor, mindfulness teacher, and personal friend has held space for me to share my deepest darkest feelings and bring not only light, energy, and awareness, but offered to share her Balanced Life approach during our workshop. Her ability to bring us into the present brings a sense of calm and was a delight during this workshop.
Since April, we’ve had over 30 virtual workshops
It is with this gratitude that I ask you to join us inside the private community, where I’ll be looking to you for how I can help you this coming year
You’ve helped me by just showing up, contributing with comments, sharing with resources, and guiding us with your story of calm.
Thank you so very much, I’m grateful for each and everyone who’s been a part of Find Calm Here this year!
Find Calm Here is an online community offering resources to build mindful habits by hosting interactive workshops and cultivating conversations around self-care practices, healthy lifestyles, and creating positive mindsets focused on helping you find calm.
I hope you’ll join us for our upcoming workshops.
