My guest today is Sara Musleh, a young woman in Gaza, whose life was turned upside down from the morning in October 2023 when she lay down for a nap and awoke to the sound of bombing and the beginning of a nightmare.

Finishing your final year of school exams can be stressful at the best of times. Sara has done it while under attack, fearing for her life, being displaced numerous times, lacking food and electricity.

Sara generously shares her experience of living in a genocide, what keeps her going, what the so-called ceasefire means on the ground, and what those of us who care can do to stand with the people of Gaza.

Let’s talk about your inner critic. We all have one, and at times they can get really loud. It can make for a pretty unpleasant inner world, and can hold you back from showing up in the world the way you otherwise might.

Today I'm sharing four things you need to know about your inner critic so they don't run (or ruin!) your life.

You know those times when you can see a pattern repeating? It's really not working for you, but you just keep letting it play out.

In the early days of my business, for three Decembers in a row, we had really low revenue. It was stressful and daunting, being unsure if I'd have enough to pay the rent and the team and to make it through this yearly ebb.

So, rather than just waiting for the same pattern to repeat again, one year I decided I had to just try something.

It worked! And completely changed the shape of my business.

In this episode, I’m talking about that moment when you move from overwhelm, helplessness or resignation into action. It's about making an empowered attempt.

Alice Edy is alifelong doodler, professional listener, and the illustrator behind her business, Live Drawing. She transforms complex conversations, workshops and events into hand-drawn visuals.

Her work may look like drawing, but really it's about listening. Alice has an incredible ability to tune in to what matters - in her work and also (I can attest) in her daily life.

In today's episode we hear about how Alice moved from almost resenting her business to absolutely loving it. And I press her for the secret to pro-level listening. Turns out, it's something we can ALL do.

Alice is one of those people who's just really good at converation (we chat about that too!). I'm sure you're going to enjoy this episode.

When you're consistently showing up and standing up for people and causes that matter, it can take a toll. When you're driven by a purpose or attuned to the suffering of others, it can be easy to neglect to care for yourself. But, regardless of the form of activism you participate in, you want to be in it for the long haul.

So it's important that you don't burn yourself out in the process of showing up for others.

Today's guided meditation is for you. It's not about selfishness or ignoring the need outside yourself. It's about tending to yourself as well as the people and causes that you're passionate about.

This meditation can be done seated, lying down or walking. It's okay to do while driving - just don't close your eyes!

There's just under three months left of 2025. Yes, you could just write off the rest of the year, or... you could take a moment to consider how you'd like to feel at the end of the year. Whether you had specific goals for the year or not, this episode will help you to finish the year strong... or soft... or in whatever way aligns with what matters to you.

From the episode (some prompts for your reflection and journalling)

If you had explicit goals for the year...

  1. Review your goals. Adjust, defer or delete them, keeping only what still feels right for you at this time.
  2. Imagine you're at the end of the year and you've achieved your goal/s. What does that look and feel like?
  3. What are the steps between where you are now and where you want to be by the end of the year?
  4. What's the first step you will take this week?

If you had no specific goals...

  1. Imagine yourself at the end of the year. How do you want to feel? Is there something you want to have done? Imagining this to be true, consider the following...
  2. What did it take to arrive at the end of the year feeling this way?
  3. What did you overcome?
  4. What did you say no to in order to reach this point?
  5. What's the first step you will take this week toward this end of year reality?

If goals are the LAST thing you need right now, and you're just trying to survive the end of the year. You don't need to set goals as such. But it could be worthwhile reflecting on what ending the year 'well' would look like for you.

  1. Imagine yourself at the end of the year. How do you want to feel? Energised? Relaxed? Grateful? With this in mind, ask yourself the following...
  2. What would it take for you to reach the end of the year feeling the way you want to?
  3. What might be standing in the way of you feeling like this at the end of the year?
  4. Will you create the conditions in your life to close the year out in this way?

Today I'm bringing you the first 'mini mentoring' episode, where I respond to a question or challenge that I've received from business owners or aspiring ones.

I'm asked this one a lot: how do you manage working with your friends? It's a biggie!

My entire working life has involved navigating dual relationships in work and business. I'm so grateful to get to work with people I consider friends, but it's not without its challenges and I've learned to be thoughtful and deliberate in how I navigate this. In today's episode I'm sharing some of my considerations and practices that have served me (and my personal and professional relationships) well.

Let me know how this lands for you, and I'd love to hear about your own experience and lessons learned in this area.

Would you like me to address your question or challenge?

You can email or DM me with something you're challenged by in your own business (or business dream). It may be around values, operations, leadership, working with a team, cyclical business or anything else... I'd love to hear from you, and to share some thoughts in a future episode.

This week I had the privilege of speaking with Kirby Bentley, a proud Noongar Yamatji woman whose life and work spans professional netball, AFLW, art, business, playing on Australian Survivor (twice!) and powerful advocacy as an ambassador for Djirra Victoria. Kirby is the essence of a natural leader.

Kirby shares her story with honesty and generosity. We talk about her childhood, her journey from netball into football, and her experience on Survivor.

She also speaks about the loss of her Aunty Andrea to family violence, and how that tragedy continues to fuel her voice and advocacy.

⚠️ CW:As we do discuss family violence, parts of Kirby's story are confronting and may be distressing. Please take careof yourself and only listen if this feels okay to you.

Kirby’s perspective on leadership, resilience, allyship, and living fully is both grounded and inspiring. I walked away from this conversation feeling moved and energised, and I know you will too.

Djirra VictoriaDjirra provides culturally safe and accessible services for Aboriginal people. The core of their work is preventing and addressing family violence. Djirra is a place where culture is shared and celebrated and where practical support is available to all Aboriginal women and particularly to Aboriginal people who are currently experiencing family violence or who have experienced family violence in the past.

I'm ba-aack! As we enter the new season of Yes You, I'm taking you into this season in my life and business. Having taken a break, it could be tempting to launch back into full-scale activity, but I'm tuning into a whisper that's asking for something different. It's not about staying in break mode. It's about being in the transition between rest and action.

This is a time of tending the soil of my life and business for what will grow next.

You may like to ponder where the transition spaces are in your own life, and how you might inhabit them a little more fully. I invite you to reflect (or journal) on this question:

What would it mean for me to tend the soil in my life and/or business?

And as always, I'd love you to share your reflections with me. Maybe we can help each other explore in a deeper way. :)

From this episode:

I'm introducing a new episode format: Mini Mentoring sessions.

If you have question to ask, or a challenge you're facing in your business, I'd love to hear from you. In these mini mentoring sessions, I'll take 1 - 3 questions or challenges, and offer my reflections, share my own experience and some advice to help you navigate your way.

Send me your business question by email or as a DM (text or voicenote) on instagram.

Running 50km for Sara in Gaza

My sister, Louisa and I are running our first 50km ultramarathon on 13th September, and we'd love you to sponsor us to support Sara and her family in Gaza.

Sara has just turned 18 and is in her final year of school. Somehow, amidst the genocide, she has kept up her studies and hopes to take her exams in October.
She's living with her family in Nusierat refugee camp, and relies on donations for rent, food and survival.

When we're (inevitably) struggling to keep going in the 50km, we'll be buoyed by your support and the idea of making a difference in the lives of Sara and her family.

Please help us raise funds to send to Sara. Every bit counts.

In today's episode I share a change in my plans - one that includes a pause for reflection and inner work. While I had intended to launch straight into a new round of my mentoring program, this week it's become clear that this pause is needed. Listen in as I share more.

I am also pausing the podcast for a few weeks, in line with my seasonal approach. While I take a break, you may like to go back and listen to some previous episodes you enjoyed, or ones you missed.
I'll be back with you in August.

If you're interested in joining the waitlist for The Orchard, to be first to know when I re-open its doors, you can do that here: https://anniecarter.com.au/the-orchard

I'll be sharing Sunday emails with some of my reflections and prompts for your reflection too. You can subscribe to receive these notes from me through my website: http://anniecarter.com.au

I'll also be easing up but sharing lightly on instagram stories in the coming weeks, so please join me there https://instagram.com/_anniecarter

In today's episode I share four personal stories (featuring an untied shoelace, a misguided makeup attempt, a very stuck truck, and a near-miss in the Himalayas) that all point to a simple truth: sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is stop.

If you’ve been pushing, striving, switching strategies, spinning your wheels and not getting traction, this is your invitation to pause.

I hope this episode feels like a deep breath and a gentle call to a better way.

You’ll also hear a little about The Orchard, my 12-month mentoring program for women and nonbinary business owners who are ready to move beyond overwhelm, into clarity, focus and flow.

The doors to The Orchard are now open. We start on 14 August.
If you feel drawn to be part of it, or you're curious to learn more, I'd love to hear from you. Get in touch through my website or DM me on Instagram

This episode is a personal share from me. I've been noticing some beliefs I’ve picked up in recent years. While they do make sense, I've realised that they might actually be holding me back.

These thoughts seemed wise and protective… but they also quietly undermine who I am and how I want to be.

So in this episode, I take you behind the scenes into my reflections - how I’m turning down the volume on some unhelpful thoughts, and amplifying some more helpful ones instead.

It's a thought upgrade. Are you due for one too?

In this episode, I guide you through a simple but powerful exercise inspired by the 'she doesn't know it yet, but...' socials trend, with a meaningful twist. It's about helping you tune into what you really want, creating more clarity, alignment and momentum.

You might call it manifesting (I share some thoughts on that too).

Have a listen, try the exercise.
And see what unfolds.

These are some intense times we're living in. In today's episode I'm sharing how during times of upheaval, destabilisation or even just busy-ness, we may have a greater need for stabilising structures in our lives. It could enable you to experience more ease, or to sustain you as we keep your focus and effort where it needs to be.

Drawing inspiration from the idea of sthira (steady)and sukha (comfortable) as in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, I'm sharing 5 simple ideas for bringing some gentle steadiness into your life.

Business can be infused with community care, and Emily Williamson is living proof! In today's episode, I'm chatting with them about the evolution of their beautiful, heart-led business, Emily the Meal Dealer.

The business grew out of their work as a doula where they realised how much they loved caring for people through cooking. When their marriage broke down, Emily found themself as a single parent, and driven by the desire to support themself and their kids, took a deeper dive into their business.

Emily shares so generously about the realities of caring work, the tension between charging for something you’d do for free, and how they’ve found a way to weave community, compassion and practicality into their business model.

I love hearing about business owners that have managed to integrate generosity and giving back in a sustainable way. So I really enjoyed this chat, and I'm sure you will too!

I've had these words rolling around my brain for a little while now: feminism has utterly betrayed itself. This statement from Randa Abdel-Fattah at a recent panel on Feminism in the time of Gaza really cut through.

It brought on a wave of reflection. A kind of reckoning with myself.

In today's episode, we explore what happens when a movement with equality at its heart, fails to live up to its own ideology. And more specifically, what that means for those of us who consider ourselves to be feminists.

This isn't just about the 'feminist movement'. It's about me, a feminist, taking an honest look at myself, my beliefs and my actions.

I share what I'm unlearning, where I've found my own blind spots, and invite you to join me in grappling with some (possibly uncomfortable) questions for yourself.

What if your business could be good for you, good for the people around you, and good for the world?

In this episode, I’m sharing the heart of what I call Wholesome Business - a simple but powerful lens for building a business (and a life) that feels nourishing, sustainable, and deeply aligned with your values.

We explore what it means for a business to truly serve its founder (that’s you), to care for the people connected with it - from partners to team to clients - and to play a part in making the world better.

I share examples from my own businesses, and how it's an ever-changing blend.

Whether you’re building something new, checking in on your established business, or reflecting on your life more broadly, this episode will help you explore and blossom into something really good (as defined by you).

Pop this episode in your ears and let's take a mindful walk. I'll guide you through a 20 minute practice for grounding and centring yourself (but you can extend it as long as you like).

If getting outside won't work for you, you could do this one walking around an indoor space like your home.

Let’s talk about busywork — you know the kind. The endless to-do lists, the back-to-back tasks that keep you occupied but don’t actually get you anywhere. It fills your space without giving you much back. The ride isn't fun any more, but how do you get off?

In today's episode, we're looking at the difference between busywork and valuable work — the kind that genuinely matters to you, your business, your life. We’ll explore how to recognise when you’re caught in the loop of filling time, why doing more doesn’t always mean getting more done, and how you can start shifting into work that actually moves the needle.

If you’re craving clarity, breathing room, and a way of working that brings you more satisfaction and more space, this one’s for you.

12 Prompts to Escape the Busywork Trap

I've created a free PDF download for you as a companion to this episode.
It includes 12 powerful prompts to help you distinguish your own busywork from your Valuable Work, and help you move towards your effectiveness, satisfaction and flow.

In this episode, I’m inviting you into the space I’ve been dwelling in lately - one of lower energy, slower rhythms, and deep listening. From emerging out of migraine-land to lying on the earth in reflection, this is an honest share about what it means to support ourselves with softness and reverence when vitality doesn’t feel as readily available.

We explore:

  • The shift from powering through to getting curious
  • My 'prescription' for gentle self-support during a low-energy season
  • How cyclical living has transformed my relationship to my body, and is standing the test of time
  • Practices I’m returning to: journaling, Ayurvedic care, natural rhythms, and more
  • Nature as co-regulator, reminder, and teacher

This episode isn’t about fixing or optimising. It’s about tending. Listening. Remembering. Whether you’re feeling a little depleted right now, or simply craving a more compassionate way of being with yourself, you are so welcome here.

Referenced past episodes:
If you’re new here, you might enjoy the early episodes of Yes You, especially episodes 1–6 where I talk more about my own journey with cycle-aligned living and how to attune to the different phases of the menstrual cycle for yourself.

If you're curious about the Ayurvedic clock, you may like to give this past episode a listen on Apple or here on Spotify.

Thank you, as always, for being here. May this episode remind you that your body is wise, your rhythm is sacred, and your worth is never in question, no matter your energy level.

Playing around the edges of exhaustion might feel manageable... until it's not.

Have you ever run out of petrol? I have more times than I'd like to admit, though thankfully not for many years! In this episode I'm sharing the gloriously good, the inevitable bad and the painfully ugly of my experience running on empty - in my car and in my life!

In this episode, I explore the connection between energy, burnout, and the tiny top-ups that help keep us full, with some journalling prompts for your reflection.

For more on my own experience of burnout and some tips to avoid it, have a listen to this previous episode.

Do you have a mental list of things you want to do or say you want to do—big goals, small dreams, ideas that surface time and again? I always have a list like this in the back of my mind - things like learning a new language, mastering a handstand, or completing a project that's been sitting half-done for way too long.

While it's great to have goals, sometimes they can hang over us as evidence of 'one more thing I haven't done!' and can even mess with our identity and sense of being enough.

In today's episode, I share a simple but powerful exercise to help you get clear on what it would really take to achieve these things. When I did this, it became obvious to me which goals to pursue at this time, and which ones to let go of for now. And honestly? The whole process felt pretty freeing.

This episode is an invitation to take a closer look at what you truly want, what it would really take, and choosing whether that's a commitment you're ready for make. Both 'yes' and 'no' can be empowering when they come from clarity.

'Be Kind' looks cute on a T-shirt but it's more than a slogan. Acts of kindness have a powerful effect on our hormones, happiness, wellbeing and stress.

Whether it's a kind word, a moment of patience, or simply being there for someone - it all makes a difference.

In this episode I’m talking about the benefits and ripple effect of kindness, what the research says, and how to weigh up the cost of being kind.

We'll look at why kindness is not just nice; it's also good for you and for your business.

I think we can agree the world could do with a little more kindness right now.

Join me for a short guided breathwork practice to activate your body's relaxation response. This simple technique is called the cyclic sigh, or the physiological sigh.

It has been shown to be an effective method for reducing stress and enhancing mood.

I acknowledge that breathwork has its roots in ancient traditions including yoga, and I pay respect to those who have practiced and taught these techniques long before modern science turned its attention to the power of the breath.

For information on the study done on this technique, visit:

Following the previous episode on stickability, today we're fleshing it out a little more. I'm sharing more of the keys to developing grit and perseverance within yourself.

Stickability isn't generally required when something is easy. And yet somehow we can be shocked when the going gets tough. It can be enough to make us just give up.

Considering the cost in advance and embracing the challenge are some of the steps for being willing and able to hang in there when you meet some inevitable resistance. Listen in for more steps and tips to get super-stickable.

Today we're looking at a business owner's superpower: stickability. It's the willingness and ability to hang in there, try again, and find a way. When you're starting (or sustaining) a business, you wear lots of different hats, and inevitably you'll have to do things that are hard or outside your expertise. When there's noone to handball the task to, you just have to work it out. And that's where stickability comes into play.

In this episode I'm sharing the two key ingredients for stickability, and how you can develop this in yourself. It'll serve you well in business and life in general.

I started the year feeling tired and unmotivated. My old habit would have been to push myself to 'start the year strong', but 10 years of cyclical living has taught me to lean into the waning when it happens.

In the first fresh episode for 2025, let's chat about finding your own rhythm for the year ahead. There are infinte opportunities to start again, and you get to choose when is right for you.

We'll take some inspiration from the story of Hanuman from the ancient Indian epic, The Ramayana. Knowing he had a massive task ahead of him, he paused and drew on his own strengths and those around him, before jumping (literally) into it.

Calling all perfectionists, and those who are perfectionists but don't even realise! So everone, really. Perfectionism is rife in our culture, with a particular potency and flavour among women. And somtimes it's just below the surface, holding us back in ways we're not even aware of. Today's episode poses the question, 'when did you promise perfect, and who did you promise it to?' We look at signs you might be unconsciously 'promising perfect' to yourself or others, why this is really unhelpful, and what we can do as an alternative.

Throwing back to one of the most popular episodes of Yes You and an important reminder for any time, but especially this time of year.

In Australia, it’s summer time, and we’re approaching Christmas. And so we need to be on high alert when it comes to two things: bush fire danger and B-S messaging that tries to convince us our bodies need changing! In this episode we’re talking about the latter.

I share about how the Great Summer Body Lie has managed to thrive, and how we can choose to cultivate an alternative narrative for ourselves.

Anyone who lives in Naarm / Melbourne will know the long-standing bustling Preston market. Sue Sheehan and her partner Haydn opened their organic shop in a forklift bay in the market almost 25 years ago.

In today's episode, I chat with Sue about turning a passion for organic produce into a business, uneasiness with capitalism, expanding out of necessity, and where the shop name, 'Rhubarb Rhubarb' comes from.

Sue is honest, humble and philosophical. She puts the success of the business down to some hard work, some good decisions, some privilege and some luck.

Have a listen in on our chat.

You'll find Rhubarb Rhubarb at:

N31 Preston Market, Cramer St
Preston, VIC

It's always the best to think postiive, right? Not necessarily so. In this episode we're looking at prospective hindsight, and how imagining something has already gone wrong can provide some powerful insights to help us get the most out of a project or experience. This is not just about ruminating or worrying about things outside our control. I'm sharing the 'premortem' exercise. More effective than a SWOT analysis, this method is better at predicting the reasons something might fail, and empowering you with information you can use to take positive preventative action. You can use this in business of course, but really you could apply it in any area of your life - I'm thinking relationships, holidays, investments, and other big plans or projects. Have a listen and give it a go.

Do you consider yourself to be an activist? What does it mean to you? In today's episode, I'm sharing how I've grappled with the title 'activist' and landed in identifying as a 'crap activist'. If you don't necessarily see yourself as a 'real activist' but you do care about the world, other people, and us as a whole, you just might like to join me.

There's a place for a huge range of expressions of activism, each one playing its part. This episode might help you find yours.

I'm chatting with remarkable human, Integrative Sexologist, and my dear friend, Vanessa Muradian.

Vanessa thinks and feels wide and deep and we cover a bit in this episode, from experiencing grief during the ovulation phase to cultivating intimacy with and without sex, to the most common reasons people come to see Vanessa as a Sexologist, to my perception of Vanessa as someone with big feelings and why that seems ironic to them.

Grab a cuppa for this one and enjoy. xx

Vanessa (she/they) is a sexologist, yoga teacher, speaker, community facilitator and pleasure activist of Armenian and Anglo-Australian descent living, loving and working on the unceded lands of the Kulin nation. Their work is grounded in the belief that the pursuit of pleasure is an act of resistance and a liberatory practice.

At the heart of Vanessa’s work is a question. They ask: how can we more fully access the abundance of pleasure that is possible in our bodies, in our lives? As with any good question, it’s not about an answer — but, instead, a commitment to a slow, relational and wildly nonlinear process.

Join me as I reflect on a decade of tracking my cycle and the changes I’ve experienced along the way. This is (of course) not a linear journey, and there's no 'mastery' of the practice of cycle alignment. That's part of its beauty.

As I approach the transition into perimenopause, I discuss the lessons learned and how this journey has prepared me for what lies ahead. Whether you're new to the idea of menstrual cycle awareness or are a seasoned tracker, this episode offers reflections and encouragement for for you to practice curiosity and active listening in your relationship to your body and/or cycle and their evolving ways.

Patriarchal culture espouses the devaluing and domination of the body - especially women's bodies. They're controlled, shrunk, groomed, objectified and judged. Even in spiritual or religious traditions, the body is often considered a distraction or temptation - something to be transcended.

With all this going on, it's understandable that we've learned to ignore our bodies, how they feel, what they need, and what they have to say.

In today's episode, I share three ways you can explore honouring and respecting your body. Apart from doing you some good, it's one more way you can stick it to the Man!

We all want to be successful, right? But have you considered what that really means for you? There's no definitive example of a successful person, life, or business. It means something different for each of us, and is ours to define for ourselves. What does it mean for you?

Success is not so much a finish line to cross, but a north star guiding us on our way. It's away of being, regardless of any finite goals we may set and whether or not we achieve them.

Consider your own idea of success for your life and / or your business, and let it inspire you, call you forward and light your way.

In today's episode we're looking at the thoughts and actions that you're practising over and over, maybe even without realising it.... and where these might be taking you.

If you practice playing guitar every day, you'll get into the habit of practising AND you'll probably get good at the guitar. That's obvious.

But what about the thoughts you're practising? And the words, and the behaviours?
Are they leading you in the direction you want to go? As you illuminate any of your unconscious practices, you can then decide whether to strengthen them, drop them, or create some new ones that serve you better.

Do you tend to tell other people about goals you have for yourself? Who do you tell? How has that worked out for you? Ok, so despite the fact that I've been sharing about living according to seasons and cycles for years now, it turns out I had a blind spot. It hadn't occurred to me to take a seasonal approach to this podcast. 🤦🏼‍♀️

It turns out, just a simple shift of mindset and bringing in a seasonal approach made a big difference, renewing my motivation and inspiring some fresh ideas.

So as we launch into what is now officially Season 2, I'm sharing more on that, and asking you (yes you!) if a similar shift could be good for you too. We all have areas of life that feel a bit like a neverending treadmill, but maybe with a little tweak we can cultivate some ebb and flow enjoy a boost to our motivation and enjoyment.

Today I'm chatting with the wonderful Tarin Calmeyer. Tarin and I met when we were training to become yoga teachers and, thanks to the way she said 'hello', became instant friends. Tarin was all set for a career in dance, but an injury meant her path changed direction. She has studied Osteopathy, consulted 5-star resorts on their wellness programs, and lived all over the world.

In 2020, Tarin and her partner (now husband) were separated for 10 months due to lockdown, and to stay connected, started meditating together online. This sparked an idea that turned into them co-founding Remote Team Wellness, providing virtual employee wellness programs for companies across the globe, including Dell, Netflix and Microsoft, to name a few.

Tarin and I chat life seasons, being (perhaps a little too) comfortable with change, her take on wellness in the corporate sector, and how business owners can genuinely support their employees wellbeing.

This guided meditation will help you to be with emotions as they show up in your body. Rather than analysing the emotion, we meet it as physical sensation. Instead of judgment, we bring curiosity. Notice what a difference loving awareness makes.

This meditation is a great one if you've had a situation or event that 'caused' a reaction in your body like a 'lump in your throat' or 'weight on your chest' or 'butterflies in your tummy'.

But it can also be a good one just to check in with your inner experience and learn to hold space for whatever is present within you.

In today's episode I share about how and why I started offering menstrual leave in my business, Eve.  It came out of my personal experience of resting during my period, and seeing what a positive difference that made in my life. It was also about wanting to be part of the change that I believe we need in the world.

I talk about the practicality of bringing in menstrual leave, and the financial cost to the business.

Does your employer offer menstrual leave? Or if you have a business, do you offer menstrual leave to your team? I'd love to hear about it! Connect with me on instagram and let me know!

What do you do when your period arrives super early, or late, or behaves differently than you're used to? It could be easy to get frustrated or feel like you're body's doing something wrong. But in this episode I share some tips for listening, learning and honouring your cycle, even when it seems to have gone rogue.

In a world where goals are meant to be 'big, hairy and audacious', and where 'if your dream doesn't scare you, you're not dreaming big enough' this might be a controversial question... is your goal too big?

Now stay with me here.
I had a conversation with a dear friend in Nepal, and I asked him what he believed was the key to happiness. His answer (which I share in this episode) got me thinking about goals, and whether our goals actually enhance our lives? Not just in the future, when they're achieved, but now.

We know that the happiness that comes from achieving a goal fades over time, so it's worth considering whether our goals make us happy, or enrich our lives in some way, even as we're working towards them.

In this episode I share some questions you can ask yourself relating to your goals and dreams. And I offer some suggestions for revising your goals to make them work for you, not just in the future, but right now.

Today I'm sharing a little trap I've fallen into a number of times when starting new things.  It's a sneaky one that can undermine the success of getting something new - like a new routine or habit - off the ground.

And of course, I've got some ideas for how to avoid falling into this trap, and how to get out of it quickly if we happen to fall in.

As I prepared to kick off Yes You for 2023, I got thinking about starting things. More specifically, about the timing for starting things.

Are you inclined to jump in with no hesitation? Or do you brew an idea for a while before you take action? Whether it's a business, a personal project or a new routine, giving some attention to when we start it can be the difference between a big success and a fizzle-out.

In this episode I share four tips to help you find the best timing for the next thing you start.

As we approach the end of the year, things can get pretty busy, whether it's with work, family or the festivities of this time.  It's really easy to find ourselves running on empty.  The temptation may be to 'write ourselves off' until the new year - to stop trying to take care of ourselves amidst it all. But what does this mean for our relationship to ourselves? In this episode, the last one of the year, I encourage you to find ways to retain your energy, and to spend it deliberately. This practice is prescribed in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali as  a way to gain vitality.  I hope it serves you through this time, or any busy season you may face in life.

'Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.' I love this quote from Howard Thurman.

And I love seeing people who are fully alive, fully themselves. I come away from being around those people feeling more alive myself. It's a beautiful ripple effect.
So in today's episode I'm asking you some questions to help you tune into what makes you 'come alive', and then take a look at how you can do more of those things.

It seems like we've all adopted the language and concept of 'being triggered', but is it helping us? In today's episode I suggest that maybe we're focusing on the wrong thing.

The trigger itself might be interesting, but if we notice the trigger while missing the opportunity to explore what it's set off in us, we're probably no better off.  And just avoiding triggers at all costs may not be working for us either.

To quote Ana Forest: 'Never waste a good trigger.'

Let's look at what our triggers are bringing up for us, and how we can use them for our healing and growth.

What do you do in the moments between consumption and contribution? Between giving and getting? Are you quick to move on to what's next? Or can you linger in the pause?

I've noticed something special in my pranayama (breath-practice). The inhale and the exhale have qualities of their own, but there's something about the space in between the breaths. It's like dropping into total stillness, a taste of bliss.

In today's episode I talk about finding these moments in between, not just in pranayama, but in life. There's a sweetness we cultivate by moving beyond the urge to consume or contribute (to breathe in or out), and instead occupying the moment in between.

One of the most common requests I have from listeners is to share more about my goal setting / planning process. So here it is!

As we land at the end of the financial year, you might be thinking about goals for the twelve months ahead. While I tend to set personal intentions and goals according to the calendar year, in my business, I usually work with the financial year instead.

In this episode I share my process for reflecting on the year that’s been, setting goals for the year ahead and most importantly, making sure I follow through on them! I hope you enjoy hearing about my process, and I’d love to know how you go with it if you choose to give it a go.

This episode is a little different. For starters, I’m not the one asking the questions. My dear friend, Dusk Liney (@thelisteningmama) is holding space for me as I reflect on leadership. The interview was recorded in Feb 2022, a time when it felt my leadership skills and values had been thoroughly tested as we moved through one ‘unprecedented time’ after another!

The format for our chat is unique too. A big part of Dusk’s beautiful work is holding listening circles, and so she approached this interview in the same way. It’s a spacious, embodied experience. You might feel a bit like you’re listening in on a counselling session at times.

I hope you enjoy it, and stay tuned for Dusk returning to Yes You, with our roles reversed! There’s lots more for her to share with us some time soon.

Reaching one year (or 52 episodes) of this podcast, feels like an important milestone to me. Whenever I’ve found myself wondering whether I should keep going, I’d tell myself, just get to 52 episodes, and then see. And so here we are!

So this week, I share about the whole experience. I chat about why I started the podcast in the first place, some of the practicalities of how I do it, what I’ve loved, and what’s been tough. This will be a great listen if you’re interested in starting a podcast of your own, or if you’re interested to hear about my journey with it all.

And it feels like a fitting way to end the year. So I’ll be taking a break after this week, returning back to your ears on 13th January 2022.

It’s that time of year again, when the diet, fitness and beauty industries make a massive push for your dollars by convincing, reminding and confirming that you are not enough. Just some of the words for women’s bodies I’ve seen used in advertisements recently include: lumps, bumps, crepey, jowls, excess, ugly. I mean, really?! And the expectation is that we can and should ‘fix’ all of these ‘problems’ by Christmas! Like we need one more thing to do at this busy time of year.

Please don’t let this rubbish get to you. We need to stand together and say no to this stuff. In today’s episode, I’m offering you some alternative #bodygoals that you can actually do, don’t cost anything, and will feel good.

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss (PAIL) Remembrance Month and 15th October is PAIL Day. In this week’s episode, I speak with Clare Chambers as she shares the story of her first pregnancy which ended in the stillbirth of her precious daughter, Skye, at 35 weeks. We talk about how Clare grieved, and continues to grieve, this devastating loss, the reactions of her friends and family, and how she managed to keep a loving connection with her body. Clare also shares some vital information for pregnant people to be aware of, to reduce the risk of stillbirth and support a healthy pregnancy and birth, as well as suggestions for how we can support loved ones who have experienced a miscarriage, still birth or neonatal death.

It’s a longer episode than usual, but this is not a conversation to be rushed.

Today I’m offering a shift of focus from what you’re going to do, to how you’re going to be. Sometimes we can be all about the to-do list, or achieving a particular goal, without giving attention (or intention) to how we want to be along the way. And this can lead to completing tasks or achieving outcomes, but winding up with a sense of dissatisfaction about how the experience felt, or the kind of person we became in the process.

Pausing to consider and set intention for how we want to be in a day, a project, a conversation or a challenge, can be hugely grounding and very rewarding. Have a listen, and give it a go.

The ancient wisdom of Ayurveda teaches that nature is made up of five states: earth, water, fire, air and ether, and that different combinations of these form the doshas, Kapha, Pitta and Vata. You may have heard that each one of us has a particular type, made up of these doshas, but did you know that the doshas also govern different times of day? In this episode, we look at the Ayurvedic clock and how we might optimise our energy and wellbeing by aligning with these times. This is a great way of living any time, and I’ve found it especially helpful for providing some structure to my days during lockdown.

Any time is a good time to get in touch with your menstrual cycle. But lockdown provides a unique landscape against which to witness your inner seasons. When you’re pretty much living groundhog day, you can really notice the ebbs and flows of your energy, motivation, mindset and mood. In today’s episode I talk about using the sameness of your lockdown days to observe the shifts in your menstrual cycle. You can, of course, still apply this if you’re not in lockdown. And if you’re not a menstruator, you can still witness your internal shifts, and give yourself permission to accept and flow with them, rather than struggling against them.

In this episode, I refer to the amazing documentary ‘In My Blood It Flows’ which is currently on Netflix. It’s a heartwarming and heart-wrenching insight into the life of an Aboriginal boy and his family, and some of the systemic issues  in our education system.

She is one of the most down to earth people I know, which is no doubt helped by the fact that she literally has her hands in the earth every day. Jo created an incredible market garden on Tasmania’s Bruny Island, which feeds not only her family, but the local community, cafes and restaurants. She’s also a yoga teacher, and a great friend to women, with a passion to help people reconnect with themselves, each other and the earth. She’s also the mum of two gorgeous twinnies (as she calls them). In our chat, I found myself drawn to reconnect with the earth and afterwards I went outside and took my shoes off, just to feel the earth beneath me.

I’m sure you’ll love Jo as I do.

My friends laugh at me for the way I talk about myself and my experiences. Ha, I laugh at myself! But there’s a reason I do it. I’m conscious that the way we talk about ourselves, our lives and experiences, matters. It makes a difference. So I’ve learned to keep an eye on what I say, both in my head and out of my mouth, and to ask whether or not it’s working for me.

In today’s episode, I share more and encourage you to pay attention to the commentary you’re running on your own experiences, and to consider whether it’s serving you well.

I share again about the book Songlines by Margo Neale and Lynne Kelly. It’s part of the First Knowledges series which will include six books highlighting the expertise and ingenuity of Indigenous Australians. Please check it out.

The fourth lockdown in Melbourne has been the toughest one so far for my business Eve. When it was extended beyond the initial seven days, I made a decision: I asked for help!

In this episode, I share what led to me asking our community for help, why that’s a big deal for me, and what happened as a result. And I chat about some of the reasons we might tend not to ask for help, and why we should do it anyway!

What do you do when feelings start to arise? In this episode, I talk about the importance of allowing emotion to surface, and what to do with any resistance to this. I offer some tips for processing your feelings, and moving the energy of them through and out of your body, so you can return to equilibrium faster.

How often are you waiting in your day to day life? Like waiting for the kettle to boil, waiting for an appointment, waiting for your friend to arrive. And what do you do with all this waiting? Most of us are pretty quick to pick up our devices and sneak in an email or two, send a text, or just have a scroll. One way or another, we fill the gap. In this episode, I invite you to join me for a ten day experiment where we transform our waiting from filler to…. NOTHING. Let’s see how it feels to just wait without filling up the minutes with stuff.

We look at being real, showing up as we are, even when that’s messy, unsure and vulnerable. The world doesn’t need more ‘perfect’ people, and maintaining the illusion that we’re on top of everything is EXHAUSTING, so let’s give ourselves permission to be as we really are, and see what that opens up for us.

I ditched New Year’s Resolutions several years ago, because I just don’t think they work! Instead, I like to begin my year with a process of unearthing my deep intention, or sankalpa, for the year ahead. It’s not so much about goals and actions I’ll take, although they will probably flow from it, but it’s about the way I want to be this year, how I want to show up day by day. It’s about tapping into what really matters to me, and living with that as central.

In this episode, I share the process I go through each new year. Hope you find it helpful!

In this episode, I mentioned the Recognition in Anthem Project. You can find them at rap.org.au

Also, I’m offering 10% off my online Sankalpa Session. This is a pre-recorded video in which I guide you through the process of letting go of the year that’s been and connecting with your deep intention for the year ahead. It’s available for January only, and you have two weeks to complete the session once you first access it. To get the 10% discount, head to:

In Australia, it’s summer time, and we’re approaching Christmas. And so we need to be on high alert when it comes to two things: bush fire danger and B-S messaging that tries to convince us our bodies need changing! In this episode we’re talking about the latter.

I share about how this Great Lie has managed to thrive, and how we can choose to cultivate an alternative narrative for ourselves.

In this episode I read a short excerpt by Don Bemrose from ‘Growing Up Aboriginal in Australia’, edited by Anita Heiss. I really recommend this book.

Today I’m bringing together the cycle-alignment ideas from previous episodes and sharing what this means for us as leaders. Whether or not you’re an official leader like a business owner or manager, if you’re seeking to live in a cycle-based way, then you, my friend, are a leader. You’re part of the revolution! In this episode I share how it might look for us to lead the way with cycle-alignment, and how I incorporate this approach into my work life, business, and how I support my team.

In this episode, I mention Rach McPhail who is leading a campaign to have Aboriginal place names recognized and included as standard in address listings in Australia. It’s very cool, and she’s making some great headway with lots of support.

This week, I’m answering YOUR questions about the menstrual cycle, and how to align your life with it. It’s been so great hearing from you, and I’m loving the way so many listeners are diving deep into this practice.

This episode is a a Yes You first; it’s my first time with a special guest. I’m stoked to have my amazing sister Louisa joining me. She’s a naturopath, a massage therapist, and a fitness instructor, and she specializes in supporting women. She has a wealth of knowledge, which I’m lucky to have access to on the daily, and I’m so pleased to have her sharing it with you.

Together, Louisa and I take a look at your cycle-related questions, covering topics like like what to do if your cycle is irregular or doesn’t follow a 28 day pattern, how to incorporate cycle-based living if you’re pregnant or in menopause, our changing nutritional needs during each phase of the cycle… and more! It may have been labelled ‘The Curse’ by some, but in this episode we’ll explore how the menstruation phase can actually be a blessing.

I share how I approach my menstruation phase, and how this enables me to step into a new cycle with intention, and building energy. Personally, if I skip this step, I usually find that I feel a bit flat and sluggish for the rest of the month. And on the flip side, when I move through my menstruation phase ‘well’, I feel the benefits all month long. So it’s a biggie!

In this episode, we get beyond the bad rap given to our premenstrual phase, and take a look at some of its inherent superpowers! The luteal phase, or what I like to call ‘Turning In’ has the autumnal quality of transitioning us from the high vibes of ovulation to the stillness and rest of menstruation.

If you’ve ever been disregarded because you’re ‘PMS-sing’ or if you’ve even written off your own thoughts and feelings once you realised you were having them while you were premenstrual, have a listen. We reframe the phase, and discover that our critical thinking and power of analysis are gifts of this time, if we know how to work with them.

If you’re not a menstruator, you’d be looking at the waning moon phase here, and following the moon’s cue to let go of shining bright in favour of turning inward.

A couple of other things:

Head to the Gifts page on my website anniecarter.com.au to download a free calendar I’ve made for you. It’s designed to help you to plan your schedule around your cycle (or the moon’s) to really get the most out of each phase. This is how I plan my own schedule, and if you want to explore aligning your life with your cycle, I think you’ll find it really helpful. Check it out, and let me know what you think.

Also, its NAIDOC Week (8 - 15 November) so head to naidoc.org.au to get some info and see all the awesome events and workshops on offer. The theme this year is ‘Always was, always will be.’ and it’s a great time to learn more and celebrate the culture, history and achievements of our First Nations peoples.

Last episode we got to know the follicular phase, or what I like to call the ‘Firing Up’ phase, and now we take a look at the next phase of the menstrual cycle that I dub ‘Time to Shine’. Our ovulation time is like our own personal summertime, with all the good feels and high vibes that go with it.

I explain why so many of us feel so darn good during this phase, and how we can use our natural superpowers to get the most out of this time in our work, relationships, movement and self-care.

Not a menstruator? No probs. This time correlates with the full moon phase and you can apply the same principles.

View Details

In this episode, we take a look at the first of four phases of the menstrual cycle: the follicular phase.

I share why I call this the ‘Firing Up’ phase and the natural superpowers that emerge within us during this time. When we know what these superpowers are, we can harness them to optimise this time across all areas of our lives including work, exercise, socialising, self-care and more.

If you don’t have a menstrual cycle, you can still bring in the power of cyclical living. You can track the moon’s cycle instead, and work with the principles I share in this episode during the waxing moon phase.

Woohoo! Welcome to the very first episode of Yes You.

I’m excited to begin this podcast sharing about something that has been genuinely life-changing for me - getting to know (and love) my menstrual cycle. I’ve been tracking my cycle and aligning my life around its phases for about six years now.

In this episode, I share the story of how I struggled with my cycle, overrode it with medication, lost it altogether, got it back and fell in love with it. Making the tiniest changes in my life to work with, rather than against or in spite of, my cycle yielded such huge results in my health, energy levels and productivity, and I’m hooked.

If you menstruate, or if you don’t but you’d like to explore the benefits of cyclical living, I can’t wait to share this with you.
