Lindsay Adams

Hiiiiiii. Lindsay and Paige here: two therapists and mothers with a mission to fight perfection culture in motherhood. When we're not working with children and their parents in therapy or recording for the pod, you can find us hanging out at home with our families, surviving on dr. pepper or coffee, and binge-watching true crime. We're here to make the intersection between therapy and parenting relatable with education, support, and SMASHING parental stigma. Grab your favorite caffeinated beverage and buckle up for the ride.

This week we’re discussing co-regulation. We walk you through what co-regulation is, why we need it and we get a little science-y. You know how Paige loves to get into the neuroscience of it all. Not only is co-regulation an evolutionary skill, but it’s an integral part in our children being able to learn how to regulate their emotions on their own someday. Playfulness: Stressed brains respond to calm, playful faces and tones of voice. You can counter stress by introducing playfulness. Playfulness can defuse arousal, reduce conflict, and increase connectedness.

Acceptance: Communicating with our words and actions that their feelings, thoughts, urges, and perceptions and accepted completely and trusting that what they are feeling is their truth in that moment. Radically accept what’s in front of you and focus on supporting your child through it regardless of how it triggers you.

Curiosity: be curious about where the behavior comes from. Be curious enough to truly understand your child’s perspective. Open-ended questions or contemplating these questions yourself. Curiosity can also promote their self-reflection on their feelings and behaviors.

Empathy: Genuinely attempt to understand your child’s position. Focus on connection over correction. by demonstrating how difficult an experience might be for THEM, you are comforting them and letting them know they do not have to deal with their distress alone.

Just like you can't build an entire house with just a hammer, not every skill is appropriate for every situation. We want you to list your tools and the things you've been practicing. Then, go through and look at your map from day one (yours and your child) identifying your main triggers. Now, weave your skills and meeting basic needs into the days/times of your routine for nervous system support. Listen to the entire podcast sprint day 5 to get a clearer picture of how to create a supportive routine for yourself and your children.

You've got the foundation, your basic needs are met, you've selected and practiced new skills, and NOW is learning to do it together. "How do I teach my kids to manage their emotions?" Well, we have to take it back to co-regulating. Co-regulating is when we use our nervous system to help support our child's nervous system and enter a calm state. Basically, your ability to manage your emotions will make a HUGE impact on your child's ability to manage their emotions. We have good news for you, it's never too late to start teaching your kids how to co-regulate. Here are some examples of what we discuss in this podcast sprint: our experience learning how to manage our emotions later in life (30's), narrating our child's experience using feelings words, modeling the use of skills to manage our emotions, modeling of the labeling our emotional experience and physical sensations with each emotion, modeling and practicing new skills by ourselves and with our children.

Step Three! This is where most parents and people get off track. Did you know that if you attempt too much change too quickly you're actually making it harder on yourself? Often, we want to start here, jumping in to use all the skills. "What do I do at the moment?!" "What are the skills?!" If you haven't, go back to day one to make sure you have a solid foundation of understanding of how to support your nervous system before attempting new skills. Start with finding things you're already interested in and find ways to incorporate them into your daily routine. We talk through habit stacking and some of our favorite skills. Specifically, we emphasize practicing skills while already calm so your brain will have access to them at the moment you need them to support your nervous system. Here are a handful of names of skills we discuss: patterned breathing, diaphragmatic breathing, taking a pause (utilizing STOP), progressive muscle relaxation, sensory cocooning, cold exposure, and ways to tailor skills specific to your child.

Find out more about these skills from our Calm Mom, Happy Kids class here: https://candid-truth-726.myflodesk.com/

Welcome back to the podcast sprint! We've mapped our nervous system, or maybe your child's nervous system. Now, we need to ensure that our basic needs are being met. "Am I optimizing myself at the level I am capable of?" For the purpose of this podcast sprint and nervous system regulation, our basic needs include rest, sunlight, movement, play, nourishment, connection, shelter, and safety. Once we are able to find our patterns of dysregulation within our nervous system, we are able to evaluate if we're meeting our body's basic needs. What do you notice when you're dysregulated? Are you often tired or hungry? Does your body need movement? You will also learn how to apply this to your child. We're basically just complicated houseplants.

Get the down and dirty on the what, why, and how of mapping your nervous system and the nervous system of your child. Nervous system regulation is the core of understanding our responses as adults and tantrums and meltdowns for our kids. Often, we try and jump in immediately with skills to help, but if we don't understand how and why the meltdowns happen, it's harder to problem solve. This is truly step one. Enjoy!

Summer is coming in HOT! And that's no joke. We're moving into the season where parents become full-time entertainers and the days of focused work are gone. For me, summer season is accompanied by excitement, sleeping in, eating all the ice cream, and memorable family adventures. The other part of summer is knowing that, as much as you love your sticky-fingered mess makers, the unadulterated quality time + energy you’re going to be putting into making summer magic means there’s a lot less time + energy to maintaining your sanity. I’m here to help you keep summer from stealing your sanity while still creating the magic you hope for while being the intentional, incredible, SANE parent that I know you are.

Takeaways, DO let your kids be bored, DO prioritize quality over quantity, and DON'T get caught up in the "Should's" of summer.

You've lost it, now what? In this episode, Lindsay breaks down Repair after Rupture. Repairing after rupture is basically a formula for repairing your relationship with your child after there has been a conflict or disconnect. Repairing can teach our child so many things (reminding yourself of the lessons it teaches can be so helpful when we are caught in the shame cycle). It models conflict resolution skills, and accountability. Most importantly it shows our child that because we aren’t perfect it means that they don’t need to perfect.

Meet Paige:

Hi! I’m Paige, a therapist by trade and a Parent Educator by passion. I have a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I am a certified clinical trauma specialist. The focus of my work is with children and adolescents navigating anxiety and depression while processing traumatic experiences. Working with children and adolescents, I noticed a need in services for parents who are looking for support and guidance on their parenting journey. While I still work my regular 9-5, I dedicated my passion to helping parents understand the “why” behind their kid’s behaviors.  I work 1:1 with parents to identify their parenting strengths and struggles, create a unique plan specific to their needs, and teach them real tools to start using ASAP. My absolute favorite part about what I do is that I can connect with and support parents on their parenting journey. Because, bottom line, parenting is hard, and you are incredible. You just need someone in your corner to remind you.

This is where we get to meet each other. Hi! I'm your new mom friend. Not that judgey one though. The cool real one that you can wear sweatpants around, and cry while eating cookies with. The one that brings you a diet coke when you are having a bad day. I also happen to be a therapist who enjoys talking about motherhood.
