WHO/Europe
WHO is the authority responsible for public health within the United Nations system. The WHO Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe) is one of WHO’s six regional offices around the world.
It serves the WHO European Region, which comprises 53 countries, covering a vast geographical region from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans. WHO/Europe collaborates with a range of public health stakeholders in the Region and globally, to ensure that coordinated action is taken to develop and implement efficient health policies and to strengthen health systems.

On 3 February 2020, Dr Hans Kluge was officially appointed the new WHO Regional Director for Europe at the 146th session of the Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ali was the last person to be infected with naturally occurring smallpox anywhere in the world. After contracting the virus, he made a full recovery and then decided to devote his life to the cause of vaccinations and illness prevention. He did so until his sudden passing in his home district of Merka on 22 July 2013. At the time, he was working with WHO as a district polio officer as part of the polio eradication programme. He was 59 years old.
Today, the WHO European Region marks 10 years since it was certified free of poliomyelitis (polio). Stopping transmission of indigenous wild poliovirus in the 53 countries in the Region was a landmark in the effort to eradicate polio globally, and helped accelerate international momentum towards that goal.
The HIV epidemic is still not under control, according to a new surveillance report issued today. Over 118 000 cases of HIV were diagnosed in Europe in 2010, according to new data from 51 of the 53 of Member States in the WHO European Region, which were released on World AIDS Day 2011 by WHO/Europe and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Over three quarters of newly reported infections were from the eastern part of the Region. Faced with this alarming rise, the 53 Member States in the Region endorsed the new European Action Plan for HIV/AIDS 2012–2015, also officially released at the same time.
Tobacco is the single most preventable cause of death in the world. Last year, tobacco killed nearly six million people - more than tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria combined.
Tobacco companies invest a fortune to attract new smokers. Evidence shows that legislation is an effective way to counter this and save lives. We look at what countries in the WHO/Europe region have done to counter aggressive tobacco marketing and the plague of second-hand smoke.
During European Immunization Week 2011, many participating countries will focus on the challenge they face in common: the threat from vaccine-preventable diseases. A sub-regional meeting in Tirana, Albania will bring together 10 countries in South East Europe to discuss shared solutions to the issue of immunization among vulnerable and migrant populations.
