In this podcast, we go back to the late seventies and remember the 1978-79 FA Cup.
As the 2021-22 season comes to a close, I thought a trail back through time at some of the FA Cup campaigns of lore (well, of my childhood and adolescence, anyway) might be in order.
Deciding to kick off with the 1978-79 season simply because it coincided with my last year at primary school and so has remained as fresh a memory as any from my misspent youth.
As any true Gunner knows, the cup that year was won by Terry Neill’s Arsenal side which beat Manchester United three two in the final, and in so gained some consolation for the surprise one nil defeat under the Twin Towers a year earlier, at the hands of Ipswich Town. A not particularly inspiring match came alive in the last five minutes when, with Arsenal winning two nil, Manchester United scored twice to seemingly snatch at least extra time from the jaws of defeat. Rather amusingly, however, having done the hard part, United then switched off and allowed Alan Sunderland to score a last-ditch winner.
As interesting as the last five minutes of the final were, the competition as a whole over the season threw up more twists and turns along the way.

June 6th, 1996. Bamber Bridge 1. Czech Republic 9.
Football is littered with random pre-tournament friendlies. England against Aylesbury ahead of Euro 88, which really helped England do well, England playing a bunch of Italian hotel workers ahead of Italia 90, Juventus’ annual trip to Villar Perosa, any local side being invited into Marbella to play whichever side is currently residing in the sun and you just know Brian Clough would have put his lot out in a beach kick about versus kids in Spain ahead of both European Cup wins.
And then there is the cultish Czech Republic football team – yes, thems that got to the Euro 96 Final – having a pre-tournament run out against Bamber Bridge.

Crunch day for England and Hungary. Both lost their opening matches, Hungary quite spectacularly. So they really needed to win to get their campaigns back on track. Although with third place possibly enough to go through then just avoiding defeat might be good enough. Algeria were outplayed by the Irish for a large part of their opening game but gained a point. They were now up against Brazil who could become the first team into the knockout stage if they won.

Now you’ve probably all heard of the phrase ‘the streets won’t forget’. It’s around this time of year that it starts getting plastered all over social media. Even reading the dreaded four words, I am sure that you’ve immediately thought of a specific player. I know that I have.
But for those of you that have no idea what on earth I am going on about, I should probably explain what the streets won’t forget actually means. The expression is attributed to players that could be considered a mixed bag. As we all know, football can have the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The streets won’t forget is used to recognise those that have had the unfortunate pleasure of experiencing both.
In this podcast, we bring you some of the greatest "streets won't forget" players of the Premier League Era.

Sports stars appearing in the movie business is a crossover which has had decidedly mixed results. Think Ally McCoist in A Shot at Glory, Michael Jordan/LeBron James in the Space Jam duology, or Vinnie Jones in just about every hard man movie ever made. But Italian Rafaelle Vallone was an exception, a guy who burnished his career as an international standard footballer with spells as a lawyer, a journalist and, ultimately, a Hollywood movie star. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Kirsty McLeod (@kmcleodr) to tell the story of football’s ultimate renaissance man. Based on an original article by James Jackson (@mins10ffc).

Roy Hodgson may be known in England as "Uncle Roy", a comforting figure who feels like part of the English game’s furniture, his mild manners and conservative tactics an apparent throwback to the good old days. But that image of Hodgson doesn’t even begin to tell the story of a man whose career was longer, wider, braver and stranger than almost all of his countrymen. On this episode of the Football Pink Podcast, host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Graham Hollingsworth (@GramH75) and Pete Spencer (@irishpete67) to look back at the longer and more interesting era of Hodgson's career, when he was a trailblazing English maverick making a name for himself on foreign shores.

When it comes to the FIFA World Cup, there are certain teams that we expect to be there. The European Aristocracy of Italy, Germany and France, the exciting and cultured South American behemoths of Argentina and Brazil. But every 4 years the World Cup also throws up some less expected participants, little known teams from far flung countries who add to the mystique of the game. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Jack Wills (Jack_Wills_95) and Liam Togher (@liamtogher88) to look back on World Cup 2010, which was graced by the secretive so-called hermit Kingdom of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea – or North Korea, to you and me.

Ipswich Town are the very definition of a provincial side, the East Anglian club being so far removed from the glitz and glamour of England’s capital that they are nicknamed the Tractor Boys. East German international Lutz Eigendorf, known as the ‘Beckenbauer of the East’, was last seen on 5th March 1983 drinking at his local bar. Earlier that day his club, Braunschweig, had lost to Bochum. A few hours later, Eigendorf’s car was found wrapped round a tree and the midfielder had sustained injuries that would lead to his death in hospital a few days later. With his alcohol level apparently very high, the police labelled the crash a drink-related accident, but a number of suspicious circumstances point to an altogether more chilling possibility – that Eigendorf was murdered by the Stasi. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Pete Spencer (@irishpete67) to discuss Eigendorf's life and death.

If you ask any little girl or boy who their favourite player is, it will usually be a striker. These guys are the finishers, the heroes who get us off our seats, the gunslingers who roll into town and change the game using one simple thing – goals. They cost more than anyone else, sell more shirts than anyone else, and make more headlines than anyone else. On today’s episode of The Football Pink Podcast, our writers make the case for why their favourite striker can truly be considered the greatest.

The European cup Winners’ Cup, which ran from 1960 to 1999, has been associated with some pretty glamorous names over the years, with its list of former winners including the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Barcelona, Parma and Everton. Perhaps less well known is its association with Cardiff City, Wrexham or Borough United - but for decades these Welsh clubs could gain entry to the elite competition through winning the Welsh Cup. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by James Bolam (@JamesBolam) and Liam Togher (@liamtogher88) to look back on the days when Wales' lower league legends were mixing it with some of Europe’s most prestigious side's.

In the modern age, when football from across the globe can be streamed straight into our eyeballs with ever greater ease, it is easy to forget that things were not always this way. There was a time when foreign teams were the stuff of legend and imagination, of short newspaper reports and staccato radio bulletins. In 1945, there were few teams more exotic to the anglophone football fan than Dynamo Moscow, a team shrouded in mystery from behind the Iron Curtain. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Kirsty McLeod (@kmcleodr) and Pete Spencer (@irishpete67) to recount the story of how that side toured the British Isles in the aftermath of World War II – and the profound legacy they left.

Over the years, many teams have been defined by their footballing style, with catchy monikers acting as useful bookmarks to an era of revolutionary tactics or unprecedented success. AC Milan had catenaccio, Ajax had Totaalvoetbal and Barcelona had tiki-taka. But what of football’s lesser lights, how could they ever hope to gain infamy for a particular style of play? The answer involves one Welshman, one baseball cap, and one club in the Potteries. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Dave Proudlove (@fslconsult) and Graham Hollingsworth (@GramH75) to look back on the story of how Stoke City used Pulisball to barge their way to the upper echelons of the English game.

World Cup tournaments can provide the punctuation marks to a great player’s football career. However, very few players have managed to make a mark on the tournament at all different stages of their career, which makes Miroslav Klose’s incredible goalscoring longevity all the more impressive. He has been the young gun, the peak predator and the veteran frontman, at all stages bringing something to the party. Every little boy and girl growing up watching football shares a single dream - to one day become a legend at the club they support. It may be hard to imagine now, but there was a time when the Bundesliga was one of the most tightly fought competitions in world football, with names other than that of Bayern Munich emblazoned on the Meisterschale. The likes of Stuttgart, Werder Bremenand Borussia Dortmund all lifted the trophy in the 90s, but the subject of this week's pod is perhaps a more surprising name. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Graham Hollingsworth (@GramH75) and Pete Spencer (@irishpete67) to recount the story of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the four-time champions of Germany, and their devastating fall from grace.

In the modern history of Northern Irish football, the name of David Jonathan Healy looms large. The little striker is one of those players who is most closely remembered in the green of his nation rather than the colours of any of the clubs he played with, the outcome of an international career that saw him become his wee country's top international scorer of all time by a furlong - and its fourth most capped player. Along the way, there were plenty of special memories created for the Green and White Army. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Northern Irishman Rodney McCain (@RodneyMcCain) and mid-2000sKirsty McLeod (@kmcleodr) to look back on Healy's international career - and in particular two magical nights at Windsor Park in the mid 2000s. Strap in for the story of David Healy, Northern Ireland's big game hunter.

The last decade has seen the Belgian national team transform spectacularly from also-rans to serious competitors. The Red Devils finished third in the 2018 World Cup and have become regular holders of the World No 1 ranking, with their current crop of players considered to be the country's second golden generation. But who could possibly have seen it coming? Well, if you had been on Merseyside in the late summer of 2008, you might just have had an inkling. Host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Mark Godfrey (@thatmarkgodfrey) and Ben Jack (@benjack94) of The Belgian Football Podcast (@BelgianPodcast) to look back on the time that Belgium's Standard Liège left their mark on both sides of Stanley Park - and sowed the seeds for their nation's golden era.

If a baby had been born in Leeds on the day the local football team was relegated from the English top flight in 2004, they could have been legally married by the time they saw Leeds United back in the top flight. Admittedly, they wouldn't have had long to plan their wedding, and it would be a bit pricey for a 16 year old to pay for nuptials in the peak summer wedding season - but you get the drift. In the time Leeds spent out of the top flight, our hypothetical Yorkshire bairn would have gotten old enough to drive a moped, joined the armed forces, buy a lottery ticket and witness five General elections. Now that the Yorkshire giants are finally back in the top flight, host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Matt Abbott (@MattAbbottPoet) and Matt Leslie (@Matt_Leslie96) to ask the question on everyone's lips - what took you so long?

For the discerning millennial, it feels like Sevilla Fútbol Club are and always have been one of the top teams in Spain. But they weren't always the successful, Europa League dominating dominant team they have been in recent years, their run of success representing a high point in a 130 year history spent often a little further down the food chain of Spanish football. Like all great eras, there is a talismanic figure on whom Sevilla can pin their recent period of success to. Unlike other clubs, however, Sevilla's talisman is not a great player or coach, but a bang average former goalkeeper turned sporting director. On this episode of The football Pink Podcast, host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by James Jackson (@mins10ffc), James Bolam (@JamesBolam) and Thomas Duncan (@thomasduncan94) to tell the story of Ramón Rodriguez Verdejo - better known as Monchi.

Once every season, the Football Pink Podcast pauses to reflect on footballing greatness. In this episode, host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) takes a run through the Football Pink's greatest managers, with some of our writers putting forward a case for their favourite gaffer to be considered the greatest. Managers are the architects of football's great creations, whether they be those who painstakingly craft their teams from the ground up, or the firefighting mend and make doers who can bash a team together from odds and ends. Both approaches have their merits, but who is the greatest?

Crystal Palace vs Brighton & Hove Albion has got to be one of the most peculiar derbies in England. Separated by almost 50 miles and over an hour’s drive, the two teams can hardly be said to be local, and it would be fair to say that those who are not deeply invested in this derby just do not get it. But for fans of the Eagles and the Seagulls, there is no bigger game than the so-called "M23 derby". In this week's episode of The Football Pink Podcast, host Roddy Cairns (@RoddyGCairns) is joined by Pete Spencer (@irishpete67) and Andrew Haines (@AndrewHaines98) to take a look at how, when and (most importantly) why the game between the South coast outfit and the boys from the capital turned into England's strangest derby.

For football fans of a certain age, any mention of the name Wimbledon inevitably leads their thoughts to the club's infamous "Crazy Gang". Led by Dave Bassett, a group of players that included Vinnie Jones, Dennis Wise and John Fashanu shot this club from south-west London to fame with their antics on and off the pitch. The nickname was meant as both an insult and a compliment, but seldom can an unofficial moniker have loomed quite so large in the history of a football club. Diego Armando Maradona. A name that will ring through the footballing ages. The passing of the Argentinian legend on 25 November 2020 sent the footballing world into mourning for perhaps its most imperfect idol, a man who was close to flawless on the pitch, but painfully human off it.

There is a certain nostalgia within German culture for aspects of life in the former East Germany (the GDR), a phenomenon referred to as Ostalgie. This nostalgia certainly extends to the now-defunct DDR-Oberliga, and its scattered teams of the past. Wrapped around the trophy are two Scottish hands, surely the dream of every supporter in Caledonia. But these hands do not belong to Rachel Corsie, Andy Robertson or any of their illustrious predecessors as captains of the Scottish national teams. Season 1992/93 was a memorable European campaign for a few reasons: Juventus defeated Dortmund by a record score in the final of the UEFA Cup; the European Cup was rebranded as the Champions League; Germany welcomed the cream of top-level football to the final in Munich, just a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification of the country. In Argentinian football local derbies are all important, with each major city hosting a long running clásico clash between two mortal enemies. Some of them have familiar names: Clásico de barrio, Clásico de la Plata, and, of course, El Superclásico. And now, the end is near, and so we face, our final podcast. Yes, we have reached the end of the 1990/91 season and this series. And what an adventure it's been. In this episode Steve and Mark are joined by writer and journalist Matthew Crist to look back at May 1991; the month when Arsenal clinched the First Division title, Manchester United conquered Europe (well, the Cup Winners Cup), and Paul Gascoigne said goodbye to his knee ligaments in the now infamous mad 10 minute appearance in the FA Cup final against Nottingham Forest. Added to all that, Matthew remembers bucket hats and baggy jeans, Steve laments the missing accolade from Brian Clough's CV, and Mark plays us out with Tottenham's typically cockney cup final single. Oh I Say!
We have reached the penultimate episode of the series and the game, and Barry Davies' famous commentary, that inspired the name of this podcast. Joining Steve and Mark this week is author and blogger Alan Fisher as they discuss all things April 1991 including Paul Gascoigne's incredible free-kick that helped Tottenham Hotspur defeat arch rivals Arsenal in that FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Oh I Say! We’ve reached March 1991 and joining Steve and Mark for this episode is comedian, actor and Manchester United fan, Justin Moorhouse. The lads discuss the emergence of 17-year-old Ryan Giggs - who made is first team debut this month - the signing of Andrei Kanchelskis, and Justin’s experiences following United both then and now: including being stopped by the gendarmerie in France on their Cup Winners Cup campaign and hanging out with Eric Cantona. There’s the usual chat about football in 1991 and what was in the news, on the TV and in the pop charts at the time.
February 1991 turned out to be quite a momentous month: The first Gulf War ended; 10 Downing Street was attacked by the IRA; and in English football, ‘King’ Kenny Dalglish shocked everybody by unexpectedly resigning as manager of Liverpool. It was a pivotal moment in the season and came in the wake of one of the greatest FA Cup ties and Merseyside derbies ever seen. Everton came back four times in a helter-skelter, end-to-end classic forcing fierce local rivals Liverpool into a second 5th round replay. Joining host Mark to discuss that game, the background to it, and the fallout of Dalglish’s sudden departure from Anfield are former Everton and Scotland winger Pat Nevin, who played in that match; Gavin Buckland - Evertonian and regular on Radio Merseyside and the Liverpool Echo’s Royal Blue podcast - and writer, journalist and lifelong Red, Tony Evans - former football editor at The Times.

The year has turned, and to talk January 1991 Steve is joined by former Chelsea, Millwall, Gillingham and Leyton Orient defender - and also later manager of the O’s - John Sitton, who is always remembered for his famous half time team talk during the 1995 Channel 4 fly-on-the-wall documentary, Orient For A Fiver. John shares his forthright views on his time at Brisbane Road, where football has been improved upon since his days in the game, and what was happening in music, TV and the news from January 1991.

In our monthly look back to season 1990/91, Steve and Mark are joined this time by photographer Stuart Roy Clarke who remembers November 1990 and his capturing of the homes of football during the early 90s with his camera; a time of great change in the aftermath of Hillsborough and the Taylor Report that ushered in the era of all-seater stadia.
Steve and Mark are back, this time looking at the month when it all kicked off big time in the English First Division. In what was later dubbed the Battle of Old Trafford, players from Manchester United and Arsenal engaged in a mass on-field fracas that led to the Gunners being docked two points and United one. Joining us to pick the bones out of the ugly confrontation and talk about how officiating the game has changed since are the referee that day, the highly respected Keith Hackett, and fans from opposing sides of the argument - Barney Chilton, editor of the Manchester United fanzine Red News, and author and journalist Layth Yousif, who has been following Arsenal for over 35 years.
Steve and Mark are joined by Peter Hooton - lead singer of The Farm and editor of the legendary fanzine The End - to look back at English football in September 1990 as Graham Taylor takes charge of England for the first time and champions Liverpool romp to a 4-0 win over Manchester United at Anfield; giving them seven straight wins from the start of the season. They also talk about his band's classic album Spartacus, the music scene of the time, and terrible kit designs.
In the first of a new series, Steve Mitchell and Mark Godfrey look back at English football in season 1990/91. Episode 1 picks up in August 1990 when supporters were still on a high after Italia 90 and Paul Gascoigne was the nation's new hero. Joining the lads on this podcast is the man who was the face of ITV's live football coverage in those days, Elton Welsby. He'll be talking about Neville Southall, the Liverpool/Arsenal rivalry, presenting shows in different eras, and his appreciation of the hit movie, Pretty Woman.
