Firstly: this is not a COVID-19 related episode. Both of us want to keep our podcast anxiety-free when it comes to that side of things, but we do want to give our listeners our best wishes and hope you are staying safe and at home in this unpredictable time.
In this ep, we talk about how society and culture has affected and can affect nutrition and health outcomes. This includes discrimination, the patriarchy, feminism, diet culture and more. If there’s one thing we ask you to do after this pod it’s make a list of your own privileges in the world - whether that be gender, race, ability, education, and anything else you can think of!

Huge, huge, huge thank you to Caitlin Preyser and Ross Davidson for so generously donating their time and talents to the pod! You're both incredibly busy humans and we are so darn grateful that you guys were happy to lend a hand to our corner of the podcast world. For those who want to get in contact for any music or editing inquiries for Ross or for any design consults with Caitlin, we have left their details down below. We cannot recommend them enough!
We want to give our biggest thank you to our listeners (you guys!) for being so patient and generous with you love for the pod. Both of us had to sacrifice a lot of time with our family and friends for this passion project and we're so glad that it created conversation - which is what we aimed to do!
Season 2 is still in the works - as Liza has pursued her career in the UK, we're still trying to work out the kinks of online recording and content creation when we're in different time zones. Please stay tuned for what's to come!

We chat with food creator extraordinaire, Melanie Lionello. Mel is the brains behind “From My Little Kitchen”, formerly known as Naturally Nutritious - extremely successful on Instagram and through her website (linked below), is a university qualified nutritionist, holding a Bachelor of Human Nutrition and a Bachelor of Human Nutrition with Honours.
Her current role involves regular collaboration with various food brands including Barilla, Nespresso, Tassal and Hart & Soul. She creates great foodie content for both herself and others.
In this ep, Mel talks us through the ups and downs of freelance life, how she built her dream career from the ground up, her innate creative ability and why it was important for her to incorporate that passion into her career, how to begin asking people for money for the work she was doing, and some sentimental reasons as to why she loves food so much.
Oh, and if you listen close enough, you might hear the pitter-patter of cats feet in the background!

Today we have the pleasure of talking to great friend Simone Abley. Sim holds a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and provides a positive reality check for new grad dietitians. We talk about why Sim went into dietetics in the first place; the ins-and-outs of having allied health professionals in the insurance industry; how your university course probably won’t prepare you for your first job (and why that’s okay to some degree); the societal expectations of what a dietitian does, how that limits us, and why that ties into a need for better advocacy skills. We also discuss plenty of advice for new grad dietitians facing the intimidating employment world, being willing to learn and be inquisitive as you go, and. the importance of taking time off after uni. We had the pleasure of talking to one of Bran’s former lecturers, Liza Barbour. Liza lectured Bran in the area of public health nutrition and food systems.
Liza (Barbour) completed her Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, holds two Graduate Certificates (Diabetes Education, and International Health), a sports dietetics qualification, Masters in Public Health, and co-convenes Australia’s “Right to Food” Coalition...phew! As if she wasn’t busy enough, she has just begun her PhD in “Protecting our planet and our population: the local government policy response to support an environmentally sustainable diet”, launched the small business Dillicious at the end of 2018, AND has 2 kids under the age of 5. Another supermum!
She is incredibly passionate about food systems, public health, and sustainability In this episode, we talk to her about career progression, pivotal turning points in her career, her passion for sustainability and fair food rights, and how to launch a business...whilst starting a PhD!

Episode 6 brings you a chat to our former lecturer Claire Palermo. Claire has played a huge role in shaping how we both want to practice dietetics, planting the seed of the importance of social determinants of health and how to work in that capacity from day dot in our degrees.
In this episode we chat about some not-so-typical nutrition and dietetic things, such as flexibility within the dietetic curriculum in universities and how Claire is working towards future-proofing the dietetic profession, how flexible dietetic programs are actually are, and most importantly - how Claire started as a dietitian and has now become an associate professor!

In today’s episode, we’re chatting to our good friend Tess Handrinos. While the rest of the cohort was struggling to meet assignment deadlines, Tess and her hubby Alex had another due date in mind, welcoming their beautiful daughter Emilia in late 2016. After a short but well deserved break from her studies, Tess went on to complete her Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics, managing to ace both her degree and motherhood.
Now working as a non-diet dietitian and with baby number two on the way (VERY soon!), Tess is THE queen of work/life balance. She has spent the last year building her business, Joy Full Nutrition, whilst practising both clinically and in private practice. Tess continues to be one of the most thoughtful and caring people we know; is an amazing mother and friend and, quite honestly, an inspiration to both of us.
In this episode, we find out how Tess manages to keep it all together - expertly balancing work, motherhood and life, all while maintaining her own personal values. Enjoy!
