In this special episode of The Real Enneagram, we are stepping away from our standard conversations to offer a deeply restorative guided meditation. Originating from the teachings of the Heartfulness Ashram in Hyderabad, India, this practice focuses on entering the spirit through the mind, body, and especially the heart.

Find a comfortable space and allow yourself to be guided through a full-body scan, drawing grounding energy from the earth all the way up to a centered, resting place within your own heart.

In this meditation, you will be guided to:

  • Set aside the anxieties and cares of the workaday world.
  • Scan your physical body for tension and gently release it.
  • Draw in restorative, grounding energy from Mother Earth.
  • Achieve a peaceful resonance and coherence between your breathing and your heartbeat.
  • Settle into a 20-minute quiet meditation from a relaxed, connected condition.

(Note to listeners: For your safety, please do not listen to this guided meditation while driving or operating heavy machinery.)

In this episode, we delve into the tender and complex topic of grief, how the mind often struggles to comprehend the depth of grief, and the overwhelming emotions that accompany it.

We begin by examining the first stage of grief, denial, as outlined by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, and how different ego types may experience grief in varied ways. Dr. Joe shares his personal experiences with grief, particularly the loss of his two children, and emphasizes that grief is not something that can be fully healed or resolved but rather something we learn to carry with us.

The conversation highlights the importance of recognizing the soul qualities that we may have lost contact with during our grief. We discuss how these qualities can serve as a healing balm, allowing us to express our feelings and acknowledge our significance in the face of loss.

Dr. Joe recounts his journey of rediscovering his soul child through creative expression, specifically through drawing mandalas during therapy sessions. This practice not only helped him cope with his grief but also fostered a deeper connection with his clients, illustrating the unity of suffering that exists among us all.

As we reflect on the nature of grief, we acknowledge the commonality of suffering and the importance of being present for one another. We encourage our listeners to consider where in their lives their minds may be working hard to understand or manage something that instead calls for presence and compassion.

Thank you for joining us in this heartfelt discussion. We hope it resonates with those who may be navigating their own grief and loss.

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, I, we explore the fascinating topic of the head center of intelligence and look into how our thoughts shape our identity and experience. We discuss the profound question of who we are beyond our thoughts, emphasizing that our true essence lies in our soul, which transcends the ego-driven narratives we often find ourselves caught in.

Dr. Joe shares insights from his paper on the head center, explaining that many people mistakenly identify with their thoughts, while in reality, we are much more than that. He introduces the concept of "soul language," which communicates through impressions rather than words, allowing for a deeper knowing that guides our actions.

Scott adds to the conversation by highlighting how our culture often prioritizes doing over being, leading us to become overly attached to our thoughts. We reflect on the importance of reconnecting with our soul child—the innocent part of ourselves that remains connected to the divine—and how this connection can help us navigate life with more grace and presence.

Throughout the episode, we share personal anecdotes and practical strategies for tapping into our soul child, such as dedicating time for reflection and using tangible reminders from our past. We also address the challenges faced by those with difficult childhoods, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help for trauma before embarking on the journey of self-discovery.

As we conclude, we invite our listeners to engage in a reflective inquiry about where they rely on thought for safety and meaning, and what might be possible if they allowed a deeper intelligence to emerge. Thank you for joining us, and we hope you find inspiration in this exploration of the head center of intelligence.

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we delve into the heart center of intelligence within the Enneagram framework. We explore the significance of emotional intelligence, particularly how it relates to our experiences and interactions in the world.

Scott, a type five, shares his journey of reconnecting with his emotions, emphasizing the importance of feeling and accepting our feelings rather than analyzing them solely from the head. He discusses how this process began with grounding himself in his body and learning to embrace his heart's intelligence.

We also touch on the societal conditioning that often discourages us from expressing, or even feeling, our emotions, leading to a disconnect from our true feelings. Joe adds depth to our conversation by distinguishing between egoic emotional intelligence and the deeper, soul-level emotional intelligence that fosters genuine healing and connection.

As we reflect on the nature of relationships, we highlight the difference between seeking someone to complete us versus finding a partner who complements our wholeness. We emphasize the importance of nurturing love at a soul level, which allows for vulnerability and support in our relationships.

In closing, I offer a prayer for our listeners, encouraging them to remember their holy origin and to let go of the need to earn love through ego-driven strategies. We invite you to engage in self-inquiry, pondering where in your life you may still be seeking validation and what it would look like to embrace love simply as you are. Thank you for joining us today!

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we continue our two-part series on overcoming obstacles and challenges in life, focusing specifically on the obstacles posed by our own ego. We delve into the teachings of George Gurdjieff and the concept of the "fourth way," which emphasizes the importance of the soul in navigating our three centers of intelligence: the head, heart, and body.

We discuss how the ego seeks control, validation, and security through these centers, but ultimately, these pursuits are fleeting and illusory. Instead, we explore how love—the universal law—infuses our experiences and helps us transcend the limitations of the ego. We reflect on the idea that true security and validation come from a connection to the divine, rather than external circumstances.

Throughout the conversation, we emphasize the importance of personal responsibility and the need to view obstacles as opportunities for growth and learning. We also touch on the role of mindfulness and spiritual practices in helping us recognize our triggers and reconnect with the divine love that sustains us.

As we wrap up, we invite our listeners to reflect on the obstacles in their own lives and consider what truths they may reveal about their hearts. Thank you for joining us, and we hope you find inspiration in this exploration of love, ego, and personal growth.

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we delve into the theme of obstacles and how they can serve as profound teachers for our souls. We explore the idea that obstacles, while challenging, can lead to personal growth and deeper understanding.

Dr. Joe shares a personal story from his journey through a PhD program in clinical psychology, highlighting a particularly daunting course in multivariate statistical analysis. He reflects on how he initially felt overwhelmed but ultimately found solace in the belief that if it was meant for him, the divine would help him overcome this obstacle. This led to a surprising outcome on his final exam, which he describes as a spiritual event that reinforced his calling to serve others.

We discuss how obstacles can help us clarify our true desires and aspirations, emphasizing that they often prompt us to ask what we genuinely want in life. The conversation also touches on the collective obstacles faced by society, suggesting that these challenges can lead to greater truths and understanding.

Additionally, we introduce the concept of the "trickster," an archetype that can lead us to confront our own truths, often through moments of humiliation or unexpected realizations. We also address the inner critic, a common obstacle that many face, and emphasize the importance of seeking support to overcome its harsh judgments.

As we wrap up, we invite our listeners to reflect on a thought-provoking question: "When you face an obstacle, how does your heart receive love instead of shame?" We hope this episode inspires you to view obstacles as opportunities for growth and deeper connection with your true self. Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to continuing this conversation in our next episode!

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we delve into the profound topic of peace, its connection to our soul child and how our early experiences shape our understanding of peace and how our ego can often lead us away from it.

Joe shares insights from his daily reflections, emphasizing that while life can be fraught with anxiety and conflict, our essence is inherently tied to peace, which is a quality of the soul. We discuss how each Enneagram type has its unique fixation that can obscure the peace that is already within us.

Scott reflects on his personal journey, highlighting the importance of self-love and acceptance in overcoming self-criticism, which can block our access to peace. We also touch on the significance of spiritual practices in reconnecting with our divine origin and embodying true peace rather than merely conceptualizing it.

To conclude, we invite our listeners to engage in a reflective inquiry: "What is it about love that makes you feel most alive? And how might embodying that love bring greater peace into your life and your relationships?" We hope this episode inspires you to reconnect with your inner peace and the love that flows through you. In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we delve into the profound topic of peace, a universal desire that transcends all Enneagram types and explore how peace is not merely a reaction to our circumstances but a deeper quality of the soul that can be accessed regardless of external chaos.

We begin by discussing Viktor Frankl's insights from his book Man's Search for Meaning, highlighting how he maintained a sense of peace even in the most horrific conditions of the Holocaust. This leads us to reflect on our own lives, where many of us struggle with anxiety and anger in response to the turmoil around us. Joe shares a personal story about losing his job and how he and his wife cultivated peace through gratitude, transforming their kitchen into a reminder of what they still had.

Scott adds to the conversation by emphasizing the importance of being present and how peace cannot be imposed but rather is an emergent quality. We discuss the challenges each Enneagram type faces in maintaining peace and the practices that can help, such as self-inquiry and mindfulness.

As we wrap up, we encourage our listeners to consider how they can cultivate peace in their own lives and relationships, especially in a world filled with conflict. We close with an inquiry for reflection: "How might you use your body, your breath, your posture, your stillness, as a doorway back to peace when your type's ego pattern disrupts it?"

Thank you for joining us today, and we hope this discussion inspires you to seek and nurture peace within yourself and your communities.

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we continue our exploration of the three levels of soul development, focusing on the concept of the palpable soul. We delve into the significance of the I-Thou relationship, as introduced by theologian Martin Buber, which emphasizes honoring the soul of another person rather than merely engaging with their ego.

We reflect on our previous discussions about the obscured and emerging souls, noting how the obscured soul often views the world in a dualistic manner, while the emerging soul begins to experience moments of self-remembering and connection with others. Scott emphasizes the importance of embodiment practices in developing our soulality, suggesting that awareness of our energy and presence can help us navigate our spiritual journeys. In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we continue our exploration of the three major levels of soul development as outlined in Dr. Joseph Howell's book, Know Your Soul, and we dive deeper into the concepts of the obscured soul and the emerging soul.

We begin by summarizing the obscured soul, which represents the starting point of many individuals on their spiritual journey. This stage is likened to a moon hidden by clouds, where the soul exists but is obscured by the unchecked ego. We discuss how suffering often prompts individuals to seek relief, leading them to uncover their true essence.

Next, we explore the emerging soul, which signifies a shift towards consciousness. This stage involves recognizing one's fixation and its impact on life, ultimately leading to a desire for peace and connection with the soul. We reflect on how our early experiences of love and peace shape our understanding of what it means to live authentically.

Scott shares insights on the struggle between ego and soul, emphasizing the importance of choice in our daily lives. We discuss the challenges of navigating this conflict and the significance of surrendering to the soul, especially during times of crisis. The conversation touches on the cultural context that often prioritizes ego over soul, highlighting the need for a collective shift towards deeper spiritual awareness.

Throughout the episode, we emphasize the role of relationships in soul development. We discuss how emerging souls can support those in the obscured stage by sharing their experiences and being present for others. The importance of genuine connection and the power of presence in conversations are underscored as vital practices for fostering understanding and healing.

As we wrap up, we acknowledge the ongoing journey of soul development and the hope that comes from recognizing our shared humanity. We invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences and consider how they can contribute to a more soulful world. Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to continuing this important conversation in our next episode.

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we delve into the concept of soul development, a central theme from the book Know Your Soul. We explore the three major levels of soul development, starting with the first level, which we refer to as the "obscured soul."

Dr. Howell shares insights on how this level represents an unawakened state, where distractions, ego, and various fears obscure our true essence. He emphasizes that many people live in this obscured state, unaware of the beauty and potential of their souls. We discuss how suffering often acts as a catalyst for awakening, prompting individuals to question their assumptions and seek deeper understanding.

The conversation touches on the role of the "trickster," a concept introduced by Carl Jung, which highlights how our subconscious can push us to confront our inner challenges. Both Scott and Dr. Howell share personal experiences of how anxiety and suffering have led them to explore their souls more deeply, ultimately recognizing that true peace and joy come from connecting with our inner selves rather than clinging to ego-driven pursuits.

As we wrap up, we acknowledge that while the journey of soul development is ongoing, glimpses of our true selves can provide hope and encouragement. We look forward to continuing this discussion in our next episode, where we will explore the next level of soul development, the "emerging soul." Thank you for joining us today, and we hope you found value in our conversation.

Our conversation centered around the discipline of silence and its profound role in contemplation, as well as the tenacity of the ego and its resistance to what it perceives as its diminishment.

Drexel shared a poignant story from his graduate school days that highlighted the essence of spiritual maturity, emphasizing the importance of humility and the acknowledgment of not knowing. We explored how silence can create space for the soul to flourish, allowing us to listen to a deeper presence beyond our constant thoughts and ego-driven chatter.

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we delve into the profound ways the Enneagram can help us understand our souls during moments of daily struggle. Co-hosts Dr. Joe Howell, Nanette Mudiam, and Scott Smith discuss how, while many people are drawn to the Enneagram through a critical mass of suffering, the Enneagram is also brilliant at helping us navigate the smaller, day to day challenges that life throws at us.

We explore these everyday challenges that can lead to small sufferings, such as losing keys or dealing with family dynamics, and how these situations can trigger our ego patterns. Dr. Joe shares a personal story about losing his keys at the gym, illustrating how stress can cloud our judgment and lead us to blame others or ourselves. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing the ego's narratives and how they can distort our perception of reality.

The conversation shifts to how the soul can guide us through these challenges by encouraging us to ask what we can learn from our experiences. We discuss the significance of virtues and holy ideas in helping us respond to life's difficulties with awareness and compassion, rather than falling back into our ego's traps.

Ultimately, we remind our listeners that the Enneagram is not just a tool for understanding ourselves but a means to navigate the complexities of daily life with greater consciousness. In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. David Gruder, a self described "recovering psychologist and professional troublemaker." Dr. Gruder shared his unique perspective on the Enneagram and how he integrates it into his work with leaders across various industries, including government and business.

We explored his five-step Enneagram Strategy, which helps individuals identify their primary Enneagram type, nuance their understanding of subtypes and wings, heal core wounds, appreciate the strengths of other types, and ultimately transcend their primary type to access the "superpowers" of all nine Enneagram types.

Dr. Gruder also discussed the importance of understanding one's core wounds, using his own experience as an Enneagram 1 as an example. He emphasized the significance of healing childhood wounds and how they shape our adult behaviors and interactions.

A key theme of our conversation was the evolution of the marketplace, moving from a focus on products to experiences, and now towards a transcendent marketplace that prioritizes spiritual development. Dr. Gruder highlighted the role of integrity in leadership and how it connects to being a whole and complete person.

We also delved into the importance of the lover archetype in the workplace, particularly in the context of HR, and how leaders can create a culture that values both beingness and doingness. Dr. Gruder provided insights on how to help leaders embrace their vulnerabilities and the necessity of balancing different archetypal energies for effective leadership.

Finally, we discussed Dr. Gruder's offerings, including his role as a fractional chief people officer and his resources for male leaders seeking to elevate their leadership skills. His books, The Nimble C-Suite and The Nimble Company, focus on fostering innovation and resilience in business. More information about Dr. Gruder's offerings can be found at drgruder.com.

We hope you enjoyed this enlightening conversation and gained valuable insights into the Enneagram and its application in personal and professional development. Thank you for listening!

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we continue our exploration of Dr. Joe Howell's new book, Know Your Soul: Journeying with the Enneagram and delve into the practical applications of the Enneagram, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to deepen our understanding of our souls rather than merely improving our egos.

Joe shares his insights on how each person is a, "living document," with unique experiences that shape their understanding of the universe and spirit. He discusses the concept of "shock points"—moments in life where we face dilemmas that challenge our capacities and require us to seek deeper truths. We explore how spiritual practices, such as mindfulness meditation and embodiment practices, can help us recognize when our unchecked ego is dominating our lives.

Throughout the conversation, we highlight the importance of inquiry as a tool for self-discovery. Joe recounts a profound experience of inquiry that led him to realize that the expectations he felt were imposed by his parents were, in fact, expectations he had internalized himself. This realization brought him a sense of freedom and empowerment.

Scott shares his own experience with inquiry, illustrating how it helped him cultivate self-compassion and shift his inner dialogue from self-judgment to curiosity. We emphasize that the journey of knowing our souls is not about achieving a destination but about navigating the complexities of life with awareness and openness.

As we wrap up, we encourage our listeners to recognize that their souls are always available to them, offering guidance and insight as they navigate life's challenges. We hope this episode inspires you to embark on your own journey of self-discovery and soul knowledge. Thank you for joining us!

We explore Dr. Joe's new book, Know Your Soul: Journeying with the Enneagram, which emphasizes the Enneagram as a journey toward understanding our true essence beyond mere personality traits.

We discuss the origins of the Enneagram, tracing its roots back to George Ivanovich Gurdjieff and the ancient wisdom he uncovered. Dr. Joe shares his personal journey with the Enneagram, highlighting how it has been instrumental in his work as a psychologist and in his own spiritual growth, especially following the profound loss of his son. This experience led him to a deeper understanding of the Enneagram, revealing that it is not just about personality but about connecting with our soul.

Throughout the conversation, we touch on the concept of the "soul child" and how it relates to our spiritual journey. Dr. Joe emphasizes that while we all possess various soul energies, each of us has a primary energy that shapes our essence. We also discuss the importance of community in deepening our understanding of the soul and how spiritual awareness can lead to transformation.

As we wrap up, we invite listeners to reflect on their own journeys and the maps they use to navigate their spiritual paths. We encourage everyone to explore the insights shared in Dr. Joe's book and to join us in future discussions as we continue to uncover the depths of the Enneagram and its relevance to our lives. Thank you for tuning in!

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we wrap up our series on the Holy Ideas and Virtues, reflecting on the profound insights shared by our guests over the past nine episodes. Joined by Dr. Joe Howell and Scott Smith, we delve into the concept of amnesia surrounding our holy ideas and explore why we often forget these integral aspects of our true selves.

Dr. Joe explains that the holy ideas represent the way we perceived the world as soul children, free from the constraints of our egos. However, as we grow, we often lose sight of these ideas, leading to a sense of disconnection from our essence. The ego drives us to justify our existence, creating a narrative that we must earn our place in the world. This quest for validation can lead to feelings of inadequacy and fear, as we strive to meet external expectations rather than embracing our inherent worth.

Throughout our discussion, we emphasize the importance of remembering our holy ideas and virtues as a means of healing and reconnecting with our true selves. We share personal experiences and practical practices that can help nurture these ideas, highlighting that the journey involves intentionality and self-awareness. Ultimately, we encourage our listeners to engage with their spiritual practices, as they are essential for integrating the wisdom of the Enneagram into daily life.

As we conclude this series, we express our gratitude to our guests and invite our audience to continue exploring these concepts with us at the Institute for Conscious Being. Thank you for joining us on this journey, and we look forward to our next series!

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we had the privilege of hosting Gladys Schaefer, a dear friend and dedicated student from the Institute for Conscious Being (ICB). As a fellow type nine, Gladys shared her insightful journey of discovering her Enneagram type and the profound impact it has had on her life.

Gladys began by recounting how she found ICB through a Google search while seeking a name for her dyslexia tutoring business. This search led her to a conference where she was first introduced to the Enneagram. Initially identifying as a type two, she ultimately found her true identity at the nine table, where she connected deeply with others who shared her worldview.

During our conversation, we explored the common challenges faced by nines, particularly the struggle with self-love and the difficulty in recognizing personal needs. Gladys emphasized the importance of diligence as the virtue of the nine, contrasting it with the busyness that often obscures deeper issues. She shared her passion for literacy, which was ignited by her experiences with her daughter, and how this passion has driven her to pursue a career in education, helping others overcome their challenges.

We also discussed the significance of community for nines, highlighting how it provides the support and energy necessary for engaging in diligent action. Gladys illustrated her recent efforts to build connections within her church and writing classes, demonstrating how being part of a community can invigorate and motivate us.

As we concluded the episode, we reflected on the journey of self-compassion and the importance of recognizing our own worth. Gladys's story serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of the Enneagram and the growth that comes from embracing our authentic selves.

Valerie shared her journey with the Enneagram, which began about ten years ago when a friend introduced her to the concept. Initially, she approached it superficially, but as her friendship with Dr. Joe Howell deepened, she began to explore the Enneagram more profoundly, ultimately identifying as an Enneagram Type 8.

We discussed the common misconceptions surrounding Type 8s, including the shame some feel about their assertive nature. Valerie reflected on her experiences and how her son Jonathan encouraged her to embrace her identity as an 8, highlighting the healthy aspects of this type. We also explored the holy ideas and virtues associated with Type 8, particularly focusing on holy truth and holy compassion, as well as the virtue of innocence.

Valerie shared a poignant personal story about her quest for truth during a crisis of belief in her 20s, which resonated deeply with her understanding of the holy idea of truth. She emphasized how this journey has shaped her life and her approach to challenges, including her husband's serious health issues over the past few years. Valerie's self-awareness and growth have allowed her to navigate these difficulties with grace and empathy, transforming her interactions with students and others around her.

Throughout the episode, we highlighted the importance of doing the inner work associated with the Enneagram, recognizing that while it can be challenging, it ultimately leads to personal growth and deeper connections with others. We are grateful for Valerie's vulnerability and insights, which serve as a testament to the transformative power of understanding oneself through the lens of the Enneagram. In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we had the pleasure of welcoming Art Wimberly, an adjunct faculty member of the Institute for Conscious Being and a vibrant Type 7. Art shared his journey of self-discovery, which began during a silent retreat where he stumbled upon the Enneagram through a book by Father Richard Rohr. He discussed how his initial understanding of the Enneagram was more theoretical, lacking the depth of inner work until he encountered a teacher who helped him integrate the two systems of recovery and the Enneagram.

Art opened up about his long-term recovery journey, highlighting the struggles he faced with addiction. He emphasized the importance of facing pain and how the 12-step program helped him process his experiences. This journey led him to a significant turning point in his life, where he began to embrace wisdom and the idea of a holy plan, which resonated deeply with his Type 7 nature.

We explored the integration of the Enneagram into recovery work, discussing how understanding one's type can provide valuable insights for both individuals in recovery and their loved ones. Art shared practical ways he incorporates the Enneagram into his coaching, helping clients recognize patterns and make healthier choices.

As we wrapped up, we reflected on the power of the Enneagram in revealing the unique traps and strengths of each type, particularly in the context of addiction and recovery. We encourage our listeners to explore the upcoming conferences and resources available through the Institute for Conscious Being, especially for those affected by addiction in any capacity.

Thank you for joining us today, and we hope you found Art's insights as inspiring as we did!

In this episode of The Real Enneagram, we had the pleasure of turning the tables and welcoming our own Scott Smith as a guest. Scott, who is typically behind the scenes as our producer and editor, shared his personal journey with the Enneagram, particularly as a Type 5.

Scott recounted how he initially dismissed Dr. Joe Howell's book due to his narrow understanding of spirituality and his rationalistic worldview. However, after experiencing a significant period of suffering, he found himself drawn to both Joe's book, Becoming Conscious, and Philip Shepherd's Radical Wholeness. These readings opened him up to new perspectives on spirituality and self-understanding, leading him to embrace the Enneagram and TEPP (The Embodied Present Process) as tools for personal growth.

We delved into the virtues and holy ideas associated with Type 5, particularly focusing on the virtue of detachment and the holy ideas of omniscience and transparency. Dr. Joe Howell articulated how detachment is not about withdrawing, but about letting go of our attachments to ideas and concepts that can limit our understanding of reality.

Scott shared a profound experience he had during a retreat, where he practiced a meditation technique that allowed him to open to a deep sense of peace and connection to something greater than himself. This moment of grace highlighted the importance of being present and receptive, rather than chasing after spiritual experiences and ideas.

Throughout the episode, we emphasized that the qualities of peace, grace, and presence are available to everyone, regardless of their Enneagram type. We hope that Scott's journey and insights inspire our listeners to explore their own spiritual paths and recognize the potential for growth and connection in their lives.

Thank you for joining us today, and we encourage you to continue exploring the Enneagram and its transformative power. If you enjoyed this episode, please subscribe, leave a review, and share it with your friends and family!

Pavan shared how he was introduced to the Enneagram through his mother, Nanette, and how his initial curiosity led him to attend a transformative ICB conference at Kanuga. We explored his experience of discovering his ego type as a Four, and how this understanding has shaped his emotional landscape, particularly in relation to his virtue of equanimity and holy idea of holy origin.

Throughout our conversation, Pavan reflected on the challenges he faced, including the profound impact of losing a close friend in college. This loss served as a pivotal moment in his life, pushing him to seek deeper meaning and authenticity. He articulated how pain can be a powerful teacher, guiding him toward personal growth and a clearer understanding of his purpose.

We also discussed Pavan's marriage to Chelsea, who is also a Four, and how they navigate their relationship by balancing each other's strengths and weaknesses. Parenthood has further grounded Pavan, as he learns to embody equanimity for the sake of their daughter, Raina.

As we wrapped up, we emphasized the importance of recognizing the ongoing journey of self-discovery and the role of the Enneagram as a tool for understanding ourselves and our relationships. Pavan's insights and experiences serve as a reminder of the beauty and complexity of the human experience, and we are grateful for his willingness to share his story with us.

Beverly, a mental health clinician from Cleburne County, shared her transformative journey with the Enneagram, which she began nearly 15 to 20 years ago.

As an Enneagram Type Two, Beverly discussed the challenges she faced before discovering the Enneagram, including feelings of chaos and the desperate need to please others. She candidly reflected on how her desire to help often stemmed from a place of need rather than genuine altruism, leading to burnout and strained relationships. However, through her work with Dr. Joe Howell and the Enneagram, she found a path to greater self-awareness and healing.

Beverly emphasized the importance of humility and grace in her life, noting how these virtues have allowed her to nurture her relationships without the expectation of receiving something in return. She also shared insights into how the Enneagram has positively impacted her marriage and family dynamics, providing a common language for understanding each other better.

In her professional role, Beverly has been able to guide other clinicians, fostering an environment of grace and calm in crisis situations. She highlighted the ripple effect of this work, as it not only benefits her colleagues but also the clients they serve.

Throughout our conversation, Beverly's passion for her community and her commitment to personal growth shone through. We discussed her creative pursuits, including writing and community theater, which have helped her reconnect with her joyful soul type.

Dr. Renee shares her love for hiking, which became a significant source of solace and connection to nature during her husband's illness and after his passing. Join Dr. Joseph Howell and Nanette Mudiam in a conversation around the changes and transitions in life and how the personality enneagram along with the “enneagram of soul” point us to stay present to our life as it is today in order not to miss what nature is telling us. In this work of co-creating the seasons of life with the Creator, we can search for the joy in the challenges which grief and sorrow bring.

(6:40) “enneagram of the soul” by type

(7:39)  A.H. Almaas’ book “Facets of the Divine” - “wholeness of the divine.”

(8:14) - “expression of the divine inside of us”

(8:35) “motif of creation”

(13:56) Ego control - stagnation - soul flow

(15:00) “being present to difficult seasons”

(16:42) “miss the lessons nature is trying to teach us”

(17:26) “in every transition there is grief”

(20:50) “joy is our strength”

(21:10) “we have all of these within us”

(21:48) - Oscar Ichazo - becoming enchanted with our own ego to bring us into the work.

In this episode, we learn that we can find hope and trust in the present moment as we allow our healthy energies to reframe our pain body. Eckhart Tolle's description of pain-body, which is the dark shadow cast by the ego, is actually afraid of the light of your consciousness. It is afraid of being found out. Its survival depends on your unconscious identification with it, as well as on your unconscious fear of facing the pain that lives in you. But if you don’t face it, if you don’t bring the light of your consciousness into the pain, you will be forced to relive it again and again. The pain-body may seem to you like a dangerous monster that you cannot bear to look at, but I assure you that it is an insubstantial phantom that cannot prevail against the power of your presence.
