The fallen world and our fallen natures have deteriorated the masterpieces we were created to be. Our colors are diminished. But, we are images of God being restored. If we are images of God, what does it look like to be that from day-to-day?
Welcome to a podcast that focuses on applying unchanging, extraordinary values to a changing, ordinary life. With whatever life you've been handed. Understand yourself. Understand your focus. Understand your life.

•Quotes: •"Doubt is a key aspect in faith." - Jacob •"One of the side effects that we will see from the deconstructions of late is that it will force the church to have these conversations, and it will force us to realize that we were never meant to answer these questions in a silo. We were always meant to answer these questions in a community." - Jacob •"We should be celebrating diversity on secondary issues." - Jacob •"Theological conviction plus religious liberty equals denomination." - Sidney Mead •"When I say we need to have Christian unity, Christian humility, and Christian love, I am not saying we need to water down the gospel." -Jacob •"One of the ways that Christians look like the world, more than anything else, in any other secondary or tertiary doctrine, is division. We do a remarkable job of joining the world in making our own tribes." - Emily •"When you have a strong theological conviction on the orthodox issues, then the secondary issues don't drive you to a crisis, they drive you to this freedom and awe at the wonder of who God is." - Jacob •"Be renewed in your mind, but not at the expense of the renewal of your heart." - Jacob •"When I talk to someone who believes something different than me, it's not a threat against my truth." - Jacob

•More on art and the reformation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_in_the_Protestant_Reformation_and_Counter-Reformation •Quotes: •"I always think of it in terms of the 'what' and the 'how'. The gospel is 'what", and we want to figure out the 'how', and then we try and turn the 'how' into the 'what' and it becomes convoluted." •"Even if members of the early church were uneducated, what they had was enough." •"If you have a conviction that you can back up from scripture thoroughly, without straw men, without simplistic arguments for the other side, then hold to it, and know that scripture's going to guide you right. So you can have disagreements, you can have diversity, but it's not a hill worth dying on." •"I want to be closer to scripture." •"If you're trying to do theology for the sake of, 'I want to know everything,' you're going to fail." •"We study scripture to love God and love our neighbors. We study church history to know where the church came before because we are not an island." •"We can utilize our doubts to move closer to God." •The emphasis of the doctrinally-rich NT isn't as much on doctrine as it is on character. •Encountering a differing view should drive us to be more immersed in scripture.

Join just little ol' me introducing the series! Today, we're going a bit into what I call "the psychology of doubt" - giving shape to a shadowy experience. Please check out all the notes and resources below:
NOTES/CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS/ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: Defining my terms:
•Doubt is the hovering between two thoughts that appear to oppose each other. •Unbelief is the opposite of belief, not doubt. Unbelief is the decided landing on a thought that opposes belief. •Certainty is confidence and assurance without doubt. This certainty can come and go. •Mystery is the realm of things that cannot be known with certainty. This realm includes possibilities people often claim are certain.Doubt can produce:
•Anxiety •Irritability •Sense of paranoia •Despair •ShameClaims of doubt:
•First, doubt will often present an idea as one that negates a corresponding idea presented by faith. •Second, doubt regarding a certain aspect of our faith, however significant it can seem, does not mean the rest of our faith is brought into question. •Third, just because a belief or a doubt presents a reasonable order of claims doesn't mean that it's true. •Fourth, we often believe new information more readily than the information we've been familiarized to. This is called novelty bias.

CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS/ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
•I am not a licensed counselor or psychologist. If you are experiencing depression, seek help, from God, community, and professionals. My ultimate hope here is that we have as much faith in the spiritual realities of sin, our fallenness, and repentance as we do in a good night's sleep, medication, and therapy. I highly recommend taking advantage of all of them. •More clarification on "repenting for fallenness" - the reality is, even though we don't "commit" depression, it is a symptom of the fall and that fallenness is something that clouds our experience of the full presence of God in this life and will be resolved in glory. Whether God chooses to remove that thorn in the flesh or not, healing brings Him glory, and suffering is a means and opportunity to look more like Him in the world. •Please reach out with concerns or thoughts on Instagram or Twitter. :)

What is the meaning of life? And why does that matter in how we approach social media?
CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS/ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
•It could be argued that our earthly identities mean nothing if we use Galatians 3:28 as a proof text. However, I would argue that that verse is primarily speaking to the proclivity to divisiveness in the body, saying it is the same gospel and same Lord that unites all of us, and not arguing that we are without individual identity and purpose within that unity, as with the hand and the eye being part of the same body with different functions. •Also worth noting in how we are defined by relationships is the long-standing question of nature vs nurture. Nurture is undoubtedly a massive influence on us, and many argue our parents define us as individuals as we "inherit" their traits or things they teach us.

"Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ, and you will find Him, and with Him everything else thrown in." - C.S. Lewis

So, here we are - this isn't a part 2 to Imago Dei (that is to come), but I wanted to share some reflections on my recent hiatus from social media. I didn't come away with my usual epiphanies from these breaks - you know, "I'm addicted" or "I need to manage my time better" or "I get too much validation from it" - but I ended up coming away with something more.
So, since I feel confident on the topic, let's talk about social media. This first part is just my mind processing and rambling, so welcome to my head. ;)
"So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13:13

Welcome to Episode 2 of the Image Restoration Podcast! Join me on my crazy rambles answering questions/thoughts from last week and introducing the topic of Imago Dei. Check out the show notes below!
CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS/ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: * To extend on Elijah's thought: different wills do make for different beings. This also ties back to Jesus having the same will as the Father, because He was one with Him. Great insight, Elijah, I agree with this. Goes back to the echtypal knowledge I mention in the last episode. * "Son of Man" is worth researching. Link below to the Bible Project's "Son of Man" series. Jesus referred to Himself as this title more than any other, even almost dismissing people when they referred to Him as God or Son of God by calling Himself "Son of Man" in response. It is taken from Daniel 7 as a prophetic name of exaltation, pointing to Him as King and Messiah to deliver God's people from oppressors. * I did not do justice to the topic of the hypostatic union and the concept of Jesus being perfected. I will dedicate an episode to this in the future; I do think it is good to examine the perfect Son of Man who was Son of God, since we are made in God's image, and it's worth examining to show how we are not God and how we cannot fulfill that perfect Image calling. * In talking about the two genders that God creates - I mention that stating He made male and female continues the theme of completion, that He finished His work. I think it is also worth noting that, in this completion act, He did not make other genders. Basically, He didn't forget anyone. It is important to recognize that the tragic experiences of gender dysphoria today are post-fall, meaning it is something in need of restoration. * The notion of Jesus's suffering is key to human suffering, particularly the suffering endured by believers. My book on suffering will hinge on this fact, and hopefully I will cover it in a future episode, too! * Jesus chose to endure human life and suffering to know it in the same manner we do: experientially.

Welcome to episode one of the Image Restoration Podcast! Rather than go the route of introductions and setup, we're taking an unconventional turn and just jumping into the deep questions. Why did the fall of man happen? Will there be a tree of knowledge of good and evil in the new earth? Let's figure that out together. Show notes: CORRECTIONS/CLARIFICATIONS/ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: • "Knowledge of Assent" vs. "Experiential Knowledge" is also referred to as "Archtypal knowledge" and "Echtypal knowledge" respectively. • "God simply is." Plato refers to this concept of God by using the term "Unmoved mover". • "It's not that God's wrath wasn't displayed, but that we did not experientially know its extent." Just to build on this, God did inform us of His wrath in Genesis 2:16-17. He warned us that the penalty of sin is death. So, we had that information available, but we experienced it through seeing Christ die and attained that knowledge. Through Christ, we are spared a full experiential realization of that wrath. • "It's less for God's sake and more for ours." Just to be absolutely clear, everything is ultimately for God's glory. God carried out this entire story for His glory, not for ours. So, it is for the sake of God's glory. However, He didn't need it, and this is the point I am trying to make. It was for us to be able to glorify Him more fully and completely. • Regarding Felix Culpa, to contrast a bad version with a "good" one, here is the original Catholic use of the phrase in the Exsultet, earliest manuscripts around the 6th century: "O happy fault that earned for us so great, so glorious a Redeemer." Here, by contrast, is Augustine's writing of a corrected notion from which the Catholic tradition drew their flawed notion, circa 420 AD, which I explain in my own words in the podcast: "For God judged it better to bring good out of evil than not to permit any evil to exist."
