Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.

She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year. Learn more about Year of Inquiry at https://workwithgrace.com/year-of-inquiry

Grace also has a special love for those suffering from eating issues including disordered eating (disordered thinking) of all kinds--having suffered from this behavior and thought/feeling process herself and finding an unshakable peace within around eating, food, health and behaviors with eating.

Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts.

As Byron Katie offers us (founder of The Work); when we believe what we think, it creates unnecessary suffering. When we question what we think, we feel lighter and less serious about what is. We even begin to laugh. We notice who we really are is peaceful already, a human being living life as best we can--learning, growing, loving.

In the public sessions on this youtube channel, we have all-group inquiry sessions called First Friday Inquiry, we have interviews with practitioners of The Work, we have Eating Peace videos (on the eating peace playlist) and we have individual sessions in The Work by courageous people willing to be recorded for Peace Talk podcast and this channel. Thanks to everyone involved in what is shared here on this channel, as it is great service to others in the world who find their way here and who are curious about life without "believing" thought all the time.

In all-group sessions and solo sessions, we begin with a judgment...and move into the four questions and turnarounds. Willingness to be real and honest with your thinking is the first powerful step in The Work.

No one ever has to share when attending Friday Inquiry, and thank you when you do.

What's it like when we judge anxiety, fear, rage, sadness, grief, heartbreak, worry...or any other troubling emotion?

It hurts. We turn our attention to self-attack, for having feelings.

Who are we without our story of "feelings"?!

When we're out of work or want more money to thrive more expansively in our lives, it can be very stressful. Job hunts look daunting.

We also may have some troubling thoughts about jobs themselves. In the inquirer who did The Work today, she thought of her past jobs as requiring her to control chaos and worry about others emotional lives, or the job was boring and urgent.

Who are we without our beliefs about jobs? How can we live our turnarounds about working.

Turning these thoughts about jobs around:

Jobs are interesting, relaxed, and unfolding as needed. The inquirer found how she could approach her former job as someone "allowing order" instead of "controlling chaos". Her prescription for happiness.

Who are we without our stories?

November 8-10, 2024 Retreat in Seattle at Grace's office. See workwithgrace.com for information

December 6-13, 2024 The Work and Yoga at Mount Madonna in California. workwithgrace.com for information

It's very common in being human to be against situations in life that look threatening.

What happens when we question our thoughts that something happening, like death, decline, disease, hardship....is absolutely true? That is really is TERRIBLE? (And it doesn't mean that it is not).

Who are we without our stories?

When we believe we are right, and we MUST be right, it is stressful...and also can be difficult to let go of.

If I let go of this, I might be too passive, I might lose motivation, I might find myself lost, I might never change (gasp), says the mind.

Who would we be without thoughts about whatever is happening at all? It doesn't mean we'd be passive. We might be more active than we ever imagined.

When we believe anything should stay with us, including money, we can often experience fear.

But who would we be without the story of staying, or leaving, as we notice even we ourselves move and flow all through life.

When we believe we need to get rid of thoughts, especially very repetitive thoughts that return again and again and are painful, it can be even more stressful.

It's possible to question any thought at all. When "fat thoughts" appear, as they do for so many of us who have been plagued by concerns about acceptance and rejection of the shape of the body, it hurts.

It's possible to relax our beliefs about those thoughts themselves, while also questioning the belief "I need to stop thinking these fat thoughts".

Is it true? Can I absolutely know it's true I am fat? Can I know it's true I shouldn't keep thinking I'm fat?

Who would I be without my story?

When we believe something in our lives that doesn't change is keeping us from the center of life itself, that this condition keeps us on the sidelines....it hurts.

We want that condition gone.

We believe we're doing something wrong, that this condition is present in our lives.

Whether it's a health condition like a disease, weight, pain or another ailment, OR this condition is a troubled primary relationship or job title....we can question our beliefs about the presence of this state of affairs in our lives, and see what possibilities can arise when we drop the story of being against What Is.

Acceptance and compassion emerges. We can trust life. We can find an open window when a door has closed.

So many of us are familiar with the thoughts that direct attention to who we are as a person in the world, and how it's coming up short.

Then, to add to this list of shortcomings, we say we shouldn't be so self-critical, we should love ourselves.

Who would we be without this story?

Listen today as a woman finds this thought stressful, and has a motive to not be critical in order to receive the acceptance from another. So innocent the way our minds work with this story.

Helen Amery is a coach from the UK who has created the Enlightenment Summit, along with a program following the summit where participants will explore this wonderful topic.

As one of the speakers in the summit, I enjoyed interviewing Helen on her journey and how she came to be doing what she does.

Her scientific background in chemistry at university, followed by years in the corporate world, is a fascinating backdrop to the study of enlightenment and eventually a great expansion of ways humans can meet themselves.

You can find Helen and her enlightenment summit at: https://wildfigsolutions.co.uk/2023/12/15/enlightenment-summit/

Her book is here: https://thoughtfulraven.co.uk/the-complete-book-of-awakening/

When we have a new year, we often reflect on what this new year will contain, offer, and what we'll experience.

If you have problems...we often want them solved. We want them gone.

Who would you be without the story "something is blocking my peace, happiness, dream"?

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.

She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year.

We look at willpower, discipline, structure, laws, rules and resolutions....and notice how often they have failed and don't appear to work.

Yet, someone asks "does this mean I should never try to stop my behavior, I should just DO it whenever the urge arises to do it?"

This is swinging in the complete opposite direction and using the thought "willpower doesn't work" to give the excuse to just fall into a behavior that isn't ultimately what I want.

What we truly want, is for the behavior that seems to be "required" to become unnecessary and irrelevant. What we truly want is to no longer be interested in the behavior.

The only way I have found to do this is to see what I'm thinking, believing and feeling it does for me--and to investigate this.

In this video I share an exercise where you can begin.

We when believe we should do, think, say, feel, act differently than we do, the internal dialogue can be very painful and vicious.

I don't know about you, but when I've had troubling, frightening or pessimistic thoughts, my whole body has tensed and fought against them. Why am I thinking this? What's wrong with me? The mind grinds away churning out, it seems, unwanted ideas repetitively. But what if we explored that more deeply, and wondered about this "thinking" that appears so troubling? We can question the thinking specifically, but also the very idea that thoughts appear that we can't handle....that they mean something is wrong with me. Is that really true? The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

Thousands of people have encountered and practiced The Work since it was first offered as a simple self-inquiry method by Byron Katie in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

While the questions are similar to a deep exploration of life, being human, and personal thought....the process called The Work has made it very simple in a step-by-step format, especially good for when the mind is spinning.

But what happens with many of us when we just do NOT keep engaging in the practice? We know meditation is good for us, but we drop it and get busy, and drift away from being with ourselves in silence more and more.

This is very normal, and very common in a busy thinking mind. When we're identified with whatever the mind is saying, we get caught in its sweetness and terribleness. Oh the drama!

Who would we be without our stories? Just coming back, into inquiry, noticing how much we like to notice, and how curious we really are.

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

When we have some kind of behavior, feeling or stressful story we don't like, and it keeps reappearing as a form of self-sabotage or suffering, we can get really, really frustrated.

What if we tried inquiring instead? And how would I do this?

Here's one inquiry that may help most of all, and it will seem very strange since it might be the opposite approach to how you've been thinking about this issue.

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

First Friday is an open interactive experiential session offered to the general public, using The Work of Byron Katie as the primary modality of investigation and self-realization.

In this session, a man whose wife has been diagnosed with breast cancer shares his fear and despair and his thoughts about cancer--and how it causes long-term suffering. Other people also shared their own experiences of targeting a cause of suffering (divorce, anxiety, compulsive eating, abandonment, child, husband, spouse).

Is it the event, thing or person over there who is causing suffering long term? Or is it my thoughts about that event, condition, thing or person that causes long-term suffering?

Amazing to see what happens.

When we overeat, over-drink, over-spend, over-screen, over-porn, over-think....we're certainly noticing a struggle with ourselves.

There can be great wisdom in seeing this, and wondering about it all relates to the body, our nervous systems, a sense of the physical aspect of being.

People refer often to "somatic" experiences in the process of healing and therapy.

This means to make full contact with the body and its communication. To experience emotions in the body, feelings, sensations, tiny movements.

But do we need to actively regulate our nervous system?
It can really help to know how to calm ourselves down, and we can also question anything stressful about our approach to this process; in this case, "I" have to regulate my nervous system. Or I "have to" regulate my nervous system.

I love seeing that while I want to be a great co-partner in allowing the body and mind to calm down, it is also actively calming down without having to do anything really.

The, the "over-doing" might be a way we've gotten used to helping things calm down, but I love questioning the belief that the activated or calming down experiences are who we are.

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

Grace also has a special love for those suffering from self-sabotage and eating issues including disordered eating (disordered thinking) of all kinds--having suffered from this behavior and thought/feeling process herself and finding an unshakable peace within around eating, food, health and behaviors with eating.

Grace works with all kinds of compulsions, habits and addictions as they are all the same thing: a pull to some behavior, substance or activity in order to help us with our stressful feelings and thoughts.

To watch a mini-workshop about healing self-sabotage with self-inquiry, visit this link here: https://try.workwithgrace.com/mini-workshop

Once a month, anyone can join a live open interactive session in The Work of Byron Katie with long-time Facilitator Grace Bell. Open to anyone interested in questioning their stressful thinking, we always have an amazing time for the hour we're together.

Today, a lovely inquirer brings his perspective on seeing his partner of 50 years ailing and weakening. His thought? "She is sick".

Incredible to watch what happens, and how afraid or angry we become, when someone we love so much may die.

Want to join First Friday? Get on Grace's mailing to list to receive the zoom link every month when we meet. It's entirely free.

What if nothing out there in the world needed to change, in order for me to feel love, peace or happiness?

I love Carl Jung's quote: "In every disorder, is a secret order." It almost seems automatic to look at most things with the idea in mind that it shouldn't be the way it is: circumstances, people, our behaviors and troubling habits, our body shape and size, our past...difficult events that have happened. What if just for a moment we questioned that thought? When we question underlying beliefs like this one, it helps point us in the direction of freedom and peace. We are not dependent on life or the world--or even ourselves--changing, in order to be at peace, to be comfortable. The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

When we're going to get something that we need, there's a movement towards it that's very natural. We need water, we make our way towards the source of water (the kitchen sink, the water cooler). It's natural. What's happening when we move towards something that doesn't wind up feeling good, that actually hurts us in some way, where discouragement is the consequence even though we've done or taken or gotten the thing? A great question: how do I stop when satisfied? Is there a method, a series of steps, a way we can work with this "something" we want so we can have the feeling of satisfaction? The good news is, something is already at peace right here within, in every moment. Something is already OK with not hunting for satisfaction out there, elsewhere. Can we be with the one who is not satisfied? Yes, like a compassionate parent with a little child. Nothing is guaranteed to be a "good" outcome, and still, the mother/father can be with the one who is disappointed, afraid, upset. The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

If you've heard of A Course in Miracles, you might have noticed a lot of what is shared in the course texts is very similar to what is seen when we question our thinking.

Perhaps this is true about many spiritual texts and teachings over the lifetime of the human race. They are pointing to something intangible yet peaceful, something beyond thought or the stream of thinking we get so involved in.

Anything you find in life that works for you is so wonderful.

One quote from the course very similar to The Work is "what you think you are, is a belief to be undone."

In many ways, both the Course and The Work are about relaxing the experience of thought itself--allowing it to be the way it is, and being open to the great and miraculous Don't Know space we all have access to.

When we ask "who am I without my thought?" I have the opportunity to feel and be with what's here when I don't have a thought about it.

When we interact with groups, family members, friends, neighbors, whole cities, religious organizations, political clubs....

....we often judge.

What happens when we believe the thought "we do NOT have much in common"?

Listen as someone leads the way through this belief, and the group assembled joins in and offers their own perspective, which is so very useful.

Who we are without our stories is so kind, compassionate, and even interested in "those other people". Or not. All of it is OK.

An inquirer asks: "I'm at a stage where I've questioned a lot and had some real insights, but I still find it hard in the moment sometimes not to be seduced by the ego into believing images of past/future. I don't feel that I have the strength/energy/bandwidth to make that leap into living the turn arounds. Honestly it might take a change in priorities which also feels scary and stressful in its own way."

I see a few wonderful things in this question that may help, if you've had some of the same kinds of thoughts appear:

  1. My relationship with thought itself
  2. What I believe is necessary to overcome this (strength/bandwidth)
  3. The change will ask me to do something scary

So much beautiful information here, so helpful for us to find the clues into insight and awareness. It can be like a hidden treasure, buried somewhere...and making the discovery that life wants to reveal for us.

Who would you be without the story that you don't have what it takes...and what it takes, furthermore, is too frightening?

Q&A Tuesday: A listener asks "How do I accept my body with my heart (and not just intellectually)?

In some ways, the invitation here is to go all the way, at least it has been for me. Notice those harsh criticisms, and allow them to live. Spend time with the body, and the judgment, and question, question, question.

Who are we without our thoughts?

When we notice judgment of something, someone, anything...the tone is harsh, cutting, edgy, boundary-setting.

To question our thoughts becomes a fascinating investigation. We're curious. We see how the tone has fear contained in it, or anger, or worry. It's being protective, expressing concern.

When we notice this clearly with our thoughts and minds, and yet don't feel it in our bodies and hearts, what's happening there?

I love this inquirers question "How do I get there?" How do I really love what I'm seeing?

I love seeing we are the heart itself. Gentle, willing, able--already fully accepting, just like nature, which we are.

I was asked by Dr. Harlan Kilstein recently for an interview so he could share with the women he works with for weight loss. He was very interested in mindset and wanted to ask me questions about self-inquiry.

I received the question: How do I get to the point of truly wanting eating peace?

The one asking has to believe they must not want peace, based on the evidence of off-balance eating. They're believing, as we all do sometimes, that peace is not present or available right now. It's coming sometime in the future, I just have to hunt it down.

"I need to make my wanting be directed to wanting peace....TRULY" (says the mind).

But what if right in the middle of intense wanting is something important, a natural movement--just like the body needs water, or needs to get up and go to the bathroom? What if our vision of "not wanting" is also a little skewed?

What if we can be OK with the way we are, right now, and also in the moment of reaching take a close look at what's going on right there when we're looking back at ourselves and deciding "that person wasn't wanting the 'right' thing".

Is that true?

When we observe our own behavior and see there's a war going on with it--it causes harm, or self-sabotage, or frustration--then our minds get very stuck in a habit loop.

Listen to this inquirer open up to what's actually happening when she wants to buy sweets from her childhood at the store, and eat them all, and then tells herself "I should stop, and I can't stop".

Who are we without the story? What else is here that's going on, that creates that impulse to move, sometimes urgently, to the compulsive activity or way of thinking?

Slowing it all down can offer beautiful insight, just like this inquirer found, along with others sharing the journey in this one-hour session.

Everyone is welcome to attend any open Friday monthly inquiry session. We normally meet the First Friday of the month at 7:45am Pacific Time/ 4:45pm Europe. Get on the Grace Notes mailing list to be alerted and get the zoom link.

We all have inner voice(s) that talk away, sometimes in clear distinct sentences, sometimes with gut feelings and emotions, sometimes in one word pronouncements.

Often, we feel like that voice that's telling us to do the thing--eat, drink, smoke, buy, plan, worry, get busy--is an enemy.

What to do? Don't we want it to stop talking?

Let's do The Work.

A long list of people have submitted questions that begin with "how do I?"

It's so normal and understandable. My mind does exactly the same thing. Of course it would love to know, what a fabulous question.

But there's a baseline assumption in the question itself, that must be questioned, for a true relaxation to occur: the belief that I am an individual person who is missing something. I don't have the answer. I don't know how. I really have to find out how, it's imperative.

What if you didn't have to know how, and the thing you're seeking is not actually missing? And this doesn't mean not studying, not enjoying learning, or never gathering information...strangely enough. This is about not being identified as "the person who doesn't know how."

Or worse, the person who is broken, damaged, messed up, missing something. The person who is wrong.

Who would you be without that troubling story? Even when it comes to addiction/compulsion?

Many people suffering from compulsive behaviors wish desperately they could stop. They HAVE stopped sometimes, for even fairly long periods, only to "go back" to what they once did--all over again.

It seems like mental drudgery to be on the cycle over and over again, thinking about the same things over and over again.

Like returning to the same area in the wilderness if you were lost--thinking you're finding your way out, and here you are at a familiar old point again where you were two days ago. So discouraging.

What part of you is not affected by this merry-go-round?

When we believe we have to be productive, we envision our projects, work, tasks, time as needing to be filled in order to be successful.

The thing is, having this thought can produce a lot of anxiety, and then rebellion and sometimes the opposite of being "productive". We eat, watch, do all kinds of things, and keep moving. It's stressful.

But what about doing nothing at all? Can we allow ourselves the pleasure of simply being, like we may have done when we were kids?

The first Friday of the month (and sometimes the second--make sure you're on the Grace Notes mailing list to get alerted about First Friday) happens every month: an hour of meditation in The Work of Byron Katie and self-inquiry.

In this session, we looked at the belief "this physical condition blocks me from happiness, relaxation, freedom". Hot flashes, thin hair, light sensitivity...and other ailments in the body.

Who would we be without the story "this blocks me from peace" or even the thought "I am my body"?

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

Grace Bell, facilitator of The Work, assists people to identify and question their stressful ways of looking at life.

She offers Year of Inquiry, a vibrant membership community of inquirers Sept-June each year.

When we see our behaviors, like over-eating, or over-thinking, or over-worrying, or over-scrolling, we often have many thoughts about ourselves and focus on what's wrong, and how to fix it.

What if we could find a way to see ourselves without looking through the pair of glasses that says "I am damaged"?

It can be tricky when you really feel off. But here may be a way to sit with this and feel the peace of what you are, without that thought.

When we ask "will I ever stop this obsessive compulsive behavior?" or "will this EVER stop?" (about almost anything difficult) we feel hopelessness and despair.

We're looking closely at what doesn't work. We're seeing so much proof that this thing or condition or situation is incredibly persistent and relentless, and never-ending. Notice how you feel when you see it this way. Notice where the mind travels.

Then, be sure to ask the question: Who are you without this story? What if you turned towards noticing that "stopping" happens constantly? That peace is available to you, for you, inside of you? What if you didn't believe what you're thinking?

It seems hard to focus on what works instead of what does not. But it may be easier than our apparent one-track minds are making it out to be.

Upcoming events:  *Eating Peace Basics 8 week intensive Saturdays May 6-June 24, 2023 with lots of support in between https://www.workwithgrace.com/eating-peace-basics/ Eating Peace Inquiry Circle: stand alone ongoing inquiry group through June 2023 https://www.workwithgrace.com/ep-membership/

When we believe we've eaten too much, spent too much money, said too much and we feel upset about it, it often hurts or frightens us. How could "I" let this happen? This is wrong. This is going in the "wrong" direction. What if we paused and approached this moment with self-inquiry, especially using The Work of Byron Katie? No need to understand any philosophy, "get" any special theories, know anything new...simply working with What Is, or what appears to be true about reality, and noticing. Who would you be without your story about what's happened? And this doesn't mean deciding you don't care about what's happened at all, you sink into resignation, you give up, or you're fake positive about what's happened. Could thought itself be supportive? Let's do The Work of Byron Katie: four questions and turnarounds, and see what happens in this moment when we believe we've done, eaten, said, spent too much.

When someone dies, it is commonly a time of great transition and grief. What happens when we question our stories of death, needing someone to be present in their body, wanting things to be the way they used to be?

Listen as a lovely woman, whose mother died only 2 months before this group inquiry call, shares her thoughts with us, and inquirers into her story. Who are we without our stories about the future, or the past, when someone dies?

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

When we dislike whatever is happening in our bodies, we feel fear, worry, angst, suffering. We make plans to change it.

What if we questioned our story, when it's painful? How strange to question the story of pain, disease, or physical appearance. But what does it look like to do this? Who are we without a story?

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

Self-inquiry and The Work of Byron Katie supports us to ride the wave of thought into the mystery of No Thought, or the space of being who we are, already, without our troubling stories. All is well.

In today's episode, a wonderful group of inquirers gathers online to do The Work on the concept one person beautifully brought to the table: "he hurt me" (and the belief he will hurt me again).

To investigate being hurt and feeling the effects of pain when it comes to other peoples' words, behaviors, conduct, facial movements....can bring amazing insights.

In today's episode, a wonderful group of inquirers gathers online to do The Work on the concept that someone really needs to change, for us to be happen. "If only they were different" we say.

It's profound to do The Work on this, and find our freedom from needing someone else to change. We are no longer dependent on the world to be different, for us to be happy.

The Work of Byron Katie is a practice of self-inquiry allowing us to work with stresses appearing in the mind, and to relax with our experience of life.

Dr. Amy Johnson is author of several books including "The Little Book of Big Change". Her work focuses on the nature of thought, and making friends with it. Just like we do when we practice The Work of Byron Katie (especially question four; who are you without your story?).

Amy offers a 6 week school twice a year called the Little School of Big Change where people can gain understanding and insight into their thinking, behaviors, and emotions--especially when it comes to unwanted habits.

You can find more information at www.dramyjohnson.com

Peace Talk is a podcast dedicated to exploring change and what dissolves or shifts human suffering....where we investigate misery, unhappiness, negativity, mental illness, addiction and other internal battles people experience that make life not-so-fun....and turn these experiences around for a life of peace, joy and acceptance. Who are we without our stressful thinking?

We've all anticipated something and noticed change, and thought--depending on the situation--that what's happening is dangerous. We dread the future, we're so worried.

Listen as a woman questions her story about what caring is supposed to look like, what love means, and what she's really responsible for, as she navigates change observed in her husband of many years.

Peace Talk is a podcast dedicated to exploring change and dissolving human suffering....where we investigate misery, unhappiness, negativity, mental illness, addiction and other internal battles people experience that make life not-so-fun....and turn these experiences around for a life of peace, joy and acceptance. Who are we without our stressful thinking?

We all have stories about needs. What if they were fun, joyful stories...instead of the never-ending story called "not enough"?

Who would we be without the stress of the belief "I need....."?

Today's episode is a gathering of people together on zoom. One inquirer brings to the session her thoughts about eating when not hungry last night. When we have images in our minds of ways life could be better, even in the moment of reaching for food, just like this inquirer notices....we have all kinds of other thoughts about needing to understand what's underway, to stop that behavior, to fix this situation.

Who would we be without our stories of improvement, even self-improvement, at all? Who are we, even when we have images of pleasure to move towards?

So many of us experience shame around our behaviors (compulsions come to mind) but before the behaviors, we often believe we need to hide our thoughts and feelings.

A listener sent a comment and question about this experience of shame, and what to do about it.

When we believe we've been hurt and rejected by someone in the past, it can stay with us as a reminder of lack of safety for years. In this episode an inquire recalls a moment where she felt rejected because of her body. The Work of Byron Katie: four questions and turnarounds, leads the way to freedom from this belief. This can be done with any quality we believe is reject-worthy within ourselves.

When we're reacting to what happens in reality, it's a moment to learn from the experience, even if we'd rather not. The first place to begin is to welcome the feelings instead of resist them. And this welcoming can make all the difference in the world. Who would we be without our stories about how we're supposed to feel, or not feel?

Other people's feelings affect those around them, but if we have the power to inquire, it doesn't have to be stressful or difficult.

Who would we be without our stories that it our our job to help make them happy?

Ahhhh.

View Details

The Work of Byron Katie points us always to our memories, experiences, situations where we've felt bad, troubled, uncomfortable, sad, or deeply disturbed.

Who would we be, without these stories? we ask. We use our imagination to discover new options.

But the most difficult feelings in the first place? We're often very against them.

Who might you be without the belief that it's horrible to feel in a big way?

View Details

It's very normal for us as humans to compare ourselves to others--sometimes daily.

At least I noticed I did it since I was a child, and I notice children still doing it.

But we can question what meaning we place on the comparison, and find freedom, ease and peace in the presence of others--not suffering or fear.

View Details

The doctor didn't even have to tell me it was cancer. When she said simply "get dressed, and THEN we'll talk about the biopsy results" I immediately had adrenaline run through my veins. I could tell it was something "bad". But who was I without my story? Ahhhhhh.

View Details

It seems things go wrong when it comes to some topics in the world, Money and Eating for example.

What's happening isn't just right. More is always wanted. Or less. Depending on the moment.

Who would we be without the thoughts of lack or overwhelm? What would it be like to not believe them?

View Details

The direction we have from a voice somewhere inside our heads to change, change completely and change fast can be exceedingly stressful.

What if you questioned this thought? Are you sure you're right?

People will think "but I have to have this stressful thought because otherwise, I WILL NOT change (and remember, I have to, right?)"

This is entering an entirely different paradigm. A place where change is not required and you are truly OK. It's restful, relaxing and open-minded. It's non-resistant.

Wondering about death and dying, gaps, empty space, endings, beginnings...these are some of the most brilliant questions to consider and ponder. After a time of hiatus, it appears Peace Talk has returned...along with continued investigation of thinking. Thanks for joining me on this magical, fabulous and very difficult at times journey.

When we experience boredom, or other more mild forms of stress (and often when we experience super high level stress too) we want to distract, end it, change it, move away from it, fix it. But who would you be without the belief you can't stand this moment, even a "bored" moment? And who would you be if you stayed with whatever you're feeling in the moment, and studied it? Here's how. It might not be as hard as you think.

View Details

When we feel ashamed or guilty or embarrassed, it's a horrible feeling although not uncommon. However, the feeling often leads to the next step which is to keep it a secret and lock it away forever, and never talk about it. We try to escape, by eating or drinking or going into some kind of addictive process (I sure did). What if instead of escaping shame, you went into it and got to know it's point of view, the feeling it brings, very well indeed? I found, this made all the difference. I found, I knew how to then identify the lie of shame.

View Details

We all are accustomed to having surprises happen, and perhaps they affect our lives deeply, or our day. But is our capacity for peace entirely destroyed? You can question this thought, if you have it.

I have found, there's a space within that's peaceful and alive, no matter what happens. You've got this. It's who you are without thought.

View Details

Not long ago someone wrote to me and said The Work might not work on a fact like "the earth is dying" or "the lake is polluted" or "the country is at war".

But it doesn't matter if both your answers to the first two questions are YES (is it true? Can you absolutely know it's true?)

You can still find incredible emotional freedom or awareness of yourself through this inquiry process.

Question your thinking, find peace!

View Details

Everyone's had sleepless nights, or times you awaken. What's the best way to handle it? Definitely not fighting against your thoughts! Doing The Work is one of the best ways to see what's really true for you, and rest.

Thoughts about ourselves are often the most painful, and many people want to start self-inquiry by fixing thoughts about themselves. But who would you be without your improvement story?

View Details

When we believe thoughts like "I have to go to work" or "I need to say yes to my partner" and we're resentful, this is really like living in slavery. You can find freedom by questioning your thinking. You don't even have to DO anything, the natural and loving way will be revealed. Who would you be without your story of "I have to"?

Acting as if....turning around an awful moment.

When we believe "I screwed up" it's not always the best approach to resolving or correcting a situation. Here's why.

Ten years ago, I thought I needed more money so badly...there would be terrible consequences if I didn't get more. The worst that could happen, i thought, was having to go live with my mother. I did The Work on that future, terrible imagined situation and found, maybe if it went that way, it would be the best that could ever happen. I felt lightness and joy about the future, after I did that work. And I never moved in with my mother.

Those people who say "no" well seem to be confident, sure of themselves, great leaders, clear! But maybe you can say no, in your own less-perfect way. Here are some sentences you can practice for saying "no" and getting more comfortable. You didn't know how before, and with rehearsing, you get better and better.

Byron Katie mentions when we believe our thoughts, we suffer, and when we question them, we don't. Who would you be without your story of making a mistake, or that other person making one? How strange (but interesting, and a relief) to find something good coming out of these so-called "mistakes" and the freedom from guilt. It's kinder.

View Details

Everyone has voices in their head, sometimes that oppose each other, or don't even feel natural. One of my favorite exercises while doing The Work is to feel and be with each question, very thoroughly, very physically. How would it feel, with this thought....and without it?

We are told and invited over and over again to do The Work on OTHER people, not ourselves. But here's a little confession about me. My first public worksheet? Yup. It was on myself. Something I felt horribly ashamed of, and guilty, and thought I'd never get over.

Everyone wants to do The Work of Byron Katie on themselves. Even though we're told not to. How can we imagine who we'd be without our stories? Here's how.

I work with many people, including myself, who think "self-inquiry, or The Work of Byron Katie doesn't work for me!"

I love finding out why. Over time, working with others, the little bumps and barriers along the way fall apart, or dissolve (that's the good news).

There is nothing and no one who can't benefit from inquiring to the truth about their mind, if they want to.

I constantly criticized myself for an interesting moment from my past---trying to get my grandpa's approval, as well as be just as good as my sister, when I was ten years old.

Who would you be without the belief you did it WRONG, because you sought approval? What if that was just YOU at the time?

I often notice I've thought being kind, nice, saying "yes" and being connected = best result. But what if you could be loving and connected, without physical contact? Who says you have to hang out with people forever? Or that it's success if you do? Listen here to how I handled a "no" and moved on, still appreciating the teacher who I learned to say "no" from!

When I was 8 my family moved far away from my home town and the home I had mostly known since I was a baby. It felt devastating, and like it's true you can never, ever go back and that it's painful to get rooted somewhere. I spent many years in my late teens and 20s having home of my own, thinking "home" was my parents house. You can question these kinds of beliefs, even if they don't seem devastating anymore. What beliefs do you have running, that you got from some old memory? Question it!

View Details

Money and the absence of it is often a terrible worse-case scenario in our experience. We've lost everything, we think about the stuff we once had, or the house, and how terrible we don't anymore. Or, about the horrible scenario we see in our future, if things keep going the way they do. Yikes. Fear and panic set in. Listen to my story about what I did, when I thought the worse case scenario was about to happen.

The turnaround to #6 in The Work of Byron Katie is often somewhat jolting. The way we're turning around our thoughts is to consider being willing to experience something terrible, and even looking forward to what we think is terrible. But this doesn't mean you have to like it. Here's how.

Death is maybe the most frightening thing for many humans to contemplate. Loss, separation, fear. It's like death means....something horrible, and we haven't questioned if this is even true. Is there life beyond death? Who wants to know?

Anyone can question their thinking that a situation is not providing enough "x" whatever it is: money, food, time, security, love, happiness. Wow, what a difficult and common thought....but you can question it. I share how I did it today, with my thought "there aren't enough participants coming to my retreat!" LOL. There are, it turns out.

There's a voice of addiction you may be listening to that's ultimately got nothing to do with being addicted to a substance or activity. It's the compulsion to have the story "there is something wrong with this moment". You've got the voice that is NOT addicted, too. Can you hear it, even in the midst of total discouragement?

When you feel fear...what does your mind have to say about it? Sometimes, the threat is simply that you do not know what will happen, or you're concerned that there's a threat (but you don't know exactly what). Listen here to contemplate and wonder, what would it be like to not be afraid of experiencing fear?
