Chaos Queens: Recent Episodes

Shannon Bally

I believe that everyone's life contains an interesting story worth sharing, and I love hearing real people share their tales of love, life and loss. I also believe that there is power in telling your story and that by sharing your triumphs you can empower others through their own struggles.

Each time you’ve conquered the trials and tribulations of your life, you became stronger and I’m here to encourage you to share that strength with the world.

This podcast isn’t about me, and it’s not about trying to hate on the world for the stuff we all go through. It’s an opportunity to share that we are all unique, but we are almost all going through some crazy stuff!

These are the stories of chaos, the stories of our lives that have built us into the Queens we are.

This is Chaos Queens.

Welcom to Day Six of our 10 Days of Gratitude Series. Today we are focusing on Creativity and Passion.

Every year I choose to enroll in the One Little Word workshop put on by Ali Edwards. This year my one word for the year was "CREATE" and I have done a lot of creating! I've done water coloring, written 3 children's books, some beadwork, paper crafts, acrylic painting, and started a face painting business called Neon Giraffe. It's been a wild ride, but I've found the more I create, the more I want to create. And I'm having a blast!

I feel like "Mindfulness" "gratitude" "meditation" and "affirmations" are all buzzwords right now, but what do they actually mean? Today we are focusing on mindfulness.

What is Mindfulness?

  • mindfulness is a practice that involves paying full attention to the present moment without judgment. It's about being aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, helping to reduce stress and improve focus. You might give examples like focusing on breathing, senses, or activities to illustrate the concept.

A mindfulness practice can be beneficial because it helps

  • reduce stress
  • improve focus and concentration
  • manage emotions

What are 3 ways I can spark my creativity?

https://chat.openai.com/

  1. Expose yourself to new experiences: Creativity is often sparked by exposure to new and novel experiences. You can try something you've never done before, visit a new place, or attend an event that is outside your comfort zone. This can help to open your mind and inspire new ideas.
  2. Engage in brainstorming exercises: Brainstorming exercises are designed to encourage idea generation and creative thinking. You can try brainstorming with a group of people or do it alone. Write down every idea that comes to mind, no matter how wild or unconventional it may seem. This can help to spark new ideas and break through creative blocks.
  3. Practice mindfulness and meditation: Mindfulness and meditation can help to quiet the mind and allow creative ideas to emerge. You can try practicing mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga. These practices can help you to clear your mind and focus on the present moment, which can help to enhance your creativity.\

5 different brainstorming methods to jumpstart your creative process

  1. Brain Dump: Start by writing down all the ideas that come to your mind for the project, regardless of how random or unrelated they may seem.
  2. Mind Mapping: Create a visual representation of all the ideas and concepts related to the project. Connect the ideas and concepts to each other by drawing lines and arrows between them.
  3. The Five Whys: Ask yourself “why” five times in order to uncover the root cause of a problem or issue.
  4. Reverse Brainstorming: Start with the desired outcome, then brainstorm on how to achieve it.
  5. Group Brainstorming: Get together with a small group of people and share ideas. Group

brainstorming can be a great way to build off of each other’s ideas and gain new perspectives.

We need to honor our physical, emotional and spiritual selves in order to truly care for ourselves.

Burnout can not only cause depressive symptoms and depersonalization, but it can cause real physical issues, as well.

In an article about focusing on yourself and your happiness by trackinghappiness.com “burnout was linked to higher cases of cardiovascular diseases and musculoskeletal disorders."

Reasons to put yourself first for self-care:

  • avoid or minimize burnout
  • You can’t pour from an empty cup
  • Treat yourself like you would treat others
  • You owe you - know that you deserve the very best
  • Consistently putting yourself high on your priority list is the fastest way to self healing and self actualization.
  • Taking time to just BE with yourself is the best way to learn more about yourself

Three things to do in order to put yourself first in this year:

  1. Learn how to have a conversation with yourself.
  2. Keep increasing your goals.
  3. Try new things until you find your passion or calling.

It’s easy to be grateful for many of the inventions that make our lives more manageable, but today we are only picking one to focus on.

So what is yours?

Shower musings... Don't make it weird.

Expectations are ruining your life. Or rather, unmet expectations are ruining your life.

  1. Was the expectation communicated clearly?
  2. Did others involved acknowledge that they understood the expectation?
  3. Was the reaction/consequence for the unmet expectation communicated? Was it fair and judicious?
  4. Were there extenuating circumstances that caused the expectation to go unfulfilled?

Relationships in which you may have expectations that need to be communicated clearly:

With spouse/partner

With caregivers (yours or your children’s)

At work

Within your home

With service providers

With your children

“How we think shapes how we live.” -Jennie Allen, Get Out of Your Head There are 4 main types of procrastinator - The Performer, The Self-Deprecator, The Overbooker, and The Novelty Seeker, according to businessinsider.com

  • You are a Performer if - You wait until you are under the pressure of a deadline to get your task done.

  • You are a Self-Deprecator if - you make excuses like “I’m lazy” or “I’m stubborn” in order to put off doing what needs to be done

  • You are an Overbooker if - your excuse is that you are too busy instead of facing a challenge or admitting you don’t want to do something (you create chaos in order to avoid certain tasks)

  • You are a Novelty Seeker - if you have shiny object syndrome and can’t focus on one thing, or follow through to get things done.

Do any of these sound familiar or resonate with you? I’m definitely a Chaos Creator, mixed with a bit of Performer.

This week, we are showcasing an interview from The Classy and Real Show with Raquel Bedoya.

Find your baseline:

  1. Make sure your basic needs are met. Food, water, shelter, physical safety and security.

  2. Then answer:

What are your problems? Brain dump everything you feel is causing you to stress out or be in a perpetual state of chaos.

Then what are possible solutions? Brain storm!

  1. Look to the future. How do you make sure you don’t get back to this place of chaos?

STEP 1: What will you no longer tolerate?

Now that you are back to baseline, what events, behaviors, or tasks will you no longer tolerate. Decide this now, when there is a lull in the chaos and as things get more hectic and chaotic in your life, you will already have the boundaries in place to fall back to.

STEP 2: What are you willing to accept?

I’m not delusional, I am fully aware that there are some things you won’t be able to avoid. But, for the most part, YOU get to decide what you will accept in your life, relationships, home, job, diet, inner voice, ALL THE PLACES.

It's easy to get down on yourself when things don't go according to your plan. Here are a few quick tips on how to give yourself a confidence boost so you can continue to show up for yourself and your goals:

1) Write a BADASS List. See my video here

2) Poll your friends on what they think are your greatest strengths

3) Create something new. Suck at it. Refine it. It's just a starting point.

4) Practice Positive Affirmations and Positive Self-Talk

5) Visualize yourself accomplishing your goals

Don’t for one second forget that you have pulled yourself from the ashes of your former self many times before.

Change and growth are challenging. If they weren’t it would be too easy to slip back into what once was. The change and growth morphs you into someone who can no longer fit the mold of the old you.

Don’t cry over your inability to fit your square peg self into the circular hole of the old you.

Amy is a mom of 3 and a photographer with 15 years of experience and she’s coming to the podcast today to share her chaotic birth story as well as super useful tips to help you conquer the chaos of a family photo session.

Amy’s tips for a successful family photo session are:

  1. Don’t look at Pinterest
  2. If you have kids under 5 years old, consider booking a mini session with your photographer. 15-20 minutes is sometimes all that little kids can handle
  3. When picking out your clothes for the session, think: simple and comfortable.

This week we are chatting with Lauren G. Foster from Be Happy First. I had such a great interview with Lauren and we could have talked for hours, it seemed. I loved how real Lauren got in sharing her story. She truly is a Phoenix rising from the ashes of when, as she so frankly puts it, she "crashed and burned." There are so many lessons that Lauren shares with us in this interview. Some of my favorite parts are when Lauren talks us through how to get clarity on what you want for your life. That's something I've struggled with a lot as I navigate entrepreneurship, motherhood, marriage, life. Lauren offers these steps for finding clarity in your life's purpose: 1. Remember things you used to love to do as a kid. This re-awakens your imagination so that you can dream up the life you want. 2. Write a Bucket List - What are 50 things you want to do before you die? 3. Paint the picture of what you want and then live into that. Allow the picture to change as you experience new things and can shape the picture with your experiences. Throughout the conversation, we also discuss the Laws of Awareness and as the Universe is working in our lives in these different levels: - To me - By me - Through me - As me For more information on the Laws of Attraction, Lauren recommends any of the Abraham Hicksbooks on the subject Connect with Lauren for more information and check out her free resources: Connect on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/behappyfirst

Lauren G. Foster founded Be Happy First in 2013 when she decided that her life's purpose was to help other women create lives that feel empowered, free and abundant, so everything she does these days is towards that end. She is certified as a Life Mastery Consultant, Primal Health Coach, Masters of Wisdom and Meditation Teacher and Dream Builder Coach.

Throughout October, we remember all the babies in heaven who didn't have a chance to grow old in this world. It is a month of reflection and sadness as parents reminisce on what could have been, but also hope that we can overcome the tragedy. In honor of our lost little loves, this week we bring you an interview with Kaci McGuire from Queen Bee Fertility. This interview first aired on The BumpCast podcast in October 2018 but everything in it is still relevant to the tragedy of infant loss, miscarriage and infertility today.

During this special episode of the podcast, we discuss the importance of preparing holistically for pregnancy to give your body and your pregnancy the best chance for success, pregnancy loss, as well as postpartum care and the importance of surrounding yourself with a support system in all stages of motherhood, loss, and life.

More than anything, it's really important to give yourself grace. Too often, we mamas put so much blame on ourselves and many times, there’s not much we could have done to prevent the tragedy.

Please visit Kaci's website: www.queenbeefertility.com

If you're going through a loss and would like the list of resources Kaci mentions in the interview, please email her at: hello@queenbeefertility.com

This week on Chaos Queens, I’m interviewing the amazing Rachel Garrison. I got pretty emotional during this interview and I give so much praise to Rachel for her eloquence and poise while telling her story. Rachel has been through a lot! I found myself thinking “how is this woman still standing so strong?” And it dawned on me that OF COURSE she’s still standing strong! She is a true Chaos Queen and ruler of her realm and now she’s paving the way for others to communicate and rise up past their own fears by creating safe spaces for millennials to have vulnerable conversations about life, relationships and experiences.

I know you will be in awe of this incredible woman, just as I am.

Rachel Garrison is a native New Orleanian who holds a BA in English from Dillard University and a MA in Teaching from Rice University.

With over two decades of observing human nature and reading and writing poetry, Rachel Garrison has honed her skills as a literary alchemist transforming emotions into written word. She is the author of Chasing Unicorns: Life as an Early Millennial, a collection of poetry about the millennial’s plight in the modern-day dating world, and #soIknowitsreal, a collection of poetry and prose that gives the reader an intimate look at a unique love that battles emotional traumas while trying to establish trust.

Rachel is a safe space creator living in Houston, TX with her sons. Her passion and purpose is to create safe spaces to allow millennials to have vulnerable conversations about relationships/experiences as a means to heal inner wounds. Her hope is that these spaces facilitate the building of healthier relationships in the millennial generation and future generations. Her newest safe space is an online community she seeks to grow to 100 members.

Emotion activator. Conversaton facilitator. Vulnerability practioner. Author. Safe Space Creator.

I’m so honored to bring you this interview with my friend Lynsey Dubois this week.

Lynsey and I have been friends since my daughter was a Daisy Girl Scout some 6 years ago. I knew she had an incredibly tragic story to tell about the loss of her daughter Amelia, but the life bombs she dropped in this episode took me by complete surprise.

This woman has fought through rape, domestic violence, and a broken back along with the loss of her sweet baby girl.

To me, she is a real life super hero.

Now, because I wasn’t prepared for some of the things she dropped on us, a few of the events were sort of, glossed over. I definitely want Lynsey to come back, whenever she’s ready for a part 2 to deep dive into some of her early life tragedies, because I know so many of you Queens have similar stories.

I hope you can pull as much strength and motivation from this interview as I did.

If you have any questions or comments on this episode, feel free to email me at shannon@chaosqueens.org

I would also LOVE if you would head over to my show page on whatever platform you’re listening to this on and leave a rating and review. This is the best way you can help get the word out to other Queens about the show.

Sometimes in life, chaos can mean all the back to back to back, daily grind tasks that we go through, and sometimes chaos is a huge event.

Megan Ortolivo shares both in her story during this week’s episode of Chaos Queens.

Walk with us through the chaos of falling in love with an introvert when you’re an extrovert, marriage and building a family, and a really traumatic birth story.

There really is nothing like the Thin Blue Line. As a retired police officer it was my distinct honor to interview Laura about the loss of her brother, Deputy Sheriff Kevin Blount, when his helicopter made an emergency landing on a hilly area. When the Eurocopter-EC120 landed, the tail end broke off, causing the fuselage of the helicopter to roll down a hill.

Kevin was 29 years old and had served as a deputy sheriff for 7 years.

What is the Thin Blue Line? thinbluelinefoundation.org definition is:

The Thin Blue Line represents the men and women of law enforcement that stand between good and evil, order and chaos. The black stripes above the blue line represent the public and the bottom black stripes represent the criminal.

It was so eye opening for me to get this perspective. That of a surviving family member of a fallen officer.

Laura describes getting the news that Kevin had been in an accident, the aftermath of the news, and how it inspired her to serve others who experience trauma.

This week on Chaos Queens I’m interviewing Jasmin Ong from This Moms A Dreamer.

During our interview, Jasmin goes into depth about how growing up in the projects of the San Francisco Bay Area inspired her to overcome poverty and an eating disorder and lead her to a fruitful life of teaching other women how to pinch pennies when you absolutely have to while still allowing your family to live their best, healthiest lives.

A few topics we touch on:

The Projects of South San Francisco and San Jose, CA

Extreme couponing

Unhealthy relationship with food - eating disorders

Fat shaming

Motherhood

Jasmin is a huge influencer in the Sacramento, California area and can be found scouting out deals to share with her readers and Instagram followers, and along with her friend Romina, has started a community of likeminded creatives who support and lift each other up in business and life.

Listen up PRIVATE!

This week I’m taking you along as I remember my military experience, why I enlisted, how September 11th played a crucial role in my soldier experience, and what war really does to a girl from the suburbs.

After going back through and listening to this episode, I will admit, I definitely glossed over a few things. It certainly wasn’t intentional, but I will make sure to circle back around in another episode to get into the gory details of basic training and war in Iraq.

If you have any questions or comments on this episode, feel free to email me at shannon@chaosqueens.org

In this intro episode, I'm sharing the inspiration for this podcast and what you can expect from listening.

I hope to interview lots of women to get their unique perspectives on life, love, loss and triumph over all the chaos in their lives.

I came up with this concept after interviewing countless mamas on my pregnancy podcast, The BumpCast, and finding that we all have a story or two to tell that may inspire or encourage other women through this crazy thing called life.

Join me on the journey!
