Matt began his 2024 football adventures by travelling to watch Malaga take on Intercity - not in their usual Alicante home, but instead at the Estadio Municipal Los Arcos. A poor performance by Málaga - excluding Alfonso Herrero - but they esaped witha point. Plus, the episode features a very tired sounding Matt review the town of Orihuela, encounter a Brighton-loving/Palace-hating Málaga fan and he even found some Welsh folk.
As we close the page on 2023 join Nick, Chris and Luke as they look back over the first half of the Primera RFEF season and judge whether Malaga have what it takes to secure promotion back to Segunda at the first time of asking.
The Festive Season is well underway and Malaga rewarded their fans with an early Christmas present of 3 points after beating Algerciras on Sunday night. Alex and Luke are on hand to look back over that win after Malaga's last game of 2023!
For the final time in 2023, Matt headed to La Rosaleda and got to see Málaga finish the year with a 2-1 win against Algeciras. A cold night at La Rosaleda saw a heated game.

If you struggle to get to sleep at night then the Guiricast prescribes you to watch this weekends game between Malaga and Atletico Sanluqueno as a cure for insomnia. The lads are back to look back over a very uneventful game at the weekend, as Malaga now haven't won at home since mid October. We also look ahead to this weeks double header as we take on Eldense in the Copa del Rey and then head up the road to Merida for a Sunday evening game.

The aftermath of the Guiricast Meet must've hit the team hard as an unheard of 3 absences means Chris and Alex lead the good ship Guiricast this week. They look back over that brilliant get together of Guiricast fans and the not so brilliant result against Alcoyano. With a visit to Murcia this weekend, we were delighted to be joined by Gavin from MurcianistasSA ahead of a tasty looking match up.
It was Haitam who once again stole the show after rescuing a point for Malaga at Can Misses but it's the 22 year old centre back that stole some of the plaudits this week. The boys are back to review that game from the weekend, as well as look ahead to the visit of Alcoyano, where the Guiricast fandom descend on Malaga city!
After a quick trip up to Madrid, Matt made a flying visit to Ibiza this past weekend to take in Málaga's tough game away at UD Ibiza. A clash between 2nd and 3rd proved to be predictably tight, but Matt did get a lovely view of Haitam's incredible equaliser.
Cordoba didn't come to make up the numbers this weekend as Malaga snatched a draw from the jaws of deafeat. The team are back this week to look over a tough game at La Rosaleda as well as looking ahead to this Sunday's big visit to Ibiza with a game between 2 of the top 3.
As 600 Málaga fans headed to Antequera to watch Málaga triumph in the derby, Matt boarded a plane and headed north to Bilbao to take in a footballing double-header in the Basque Country. Sunday evening saw him head to San Mamés for Athletic v Valencia, but of course, the main event of the trip was found 6.5km north in Barakaldo, where Matt went to watch Málaga progress in the Copa after a penalty shootout win v Barakaldo. Plus, we have another museum review, Matt meets the Jokin Gabilondo fan club and, after the match, he even meets his hero…
This week, the boys are back to look over that spook-tacular result away at Antequera, as Malaga put the frightners on Castellon and Ibiza by closing the gap at the top. We also look ahead to this weekends encounter with Cordoba with Malaga looking to keep alive their unbeaten run!

Malaga made it 4 wins on the bounce after treating over 2,000 travelling fans to another away win. Matt was there and tells us all about this crazy away whilst he's joined by Nick, Chris and Luke to review the Linares game, look ahead to San Fernando and catch up on all the latest news from La Rosaleda.
It was 4 wins in a row for Málaga, as 2500 Malaguistas swarmed the town of Linares to cheer on the lads. Amongst the gran desplazamiento was Matt, enjoying beers on the streets of Linares with the fans, then struggling to find beer, before heading onto the open concrete terracing of Estadio Municipal de Linarejos to watch Roberto score and run his legs off.

Good riddance to the 2022/2023 season - adiós. Malaga’s season finished with a drab 1-1 draw at La Rosaleda against bottom-of-the-league Ibiza, but while the stuff on the pitch was fairly tepid, things off the pitch were much more heated. We not only looked back on events from this past Saturday, but we also reviewed the season that was and discussed how much of a disaster it actually was and what were the causes of that disaster. We did our best to find some positives though - like what is there to look forward to in the Primera RFEF next season and our personal highlights of a crappy season.
It is done and it is official: Málaga are relegated and will be playing in the Primera RFEF next season. Those days of working out all the different ways Málaga could stay up are at an end after Málaga lost 2-1 to Alavés this past Saturday. We discussed the game which finally killed off any chance of salvation, before looking ahead to a now pretty pointless home game against Ibiza to finish the season this Saturday. Plus, we talked about the big press conference this past week, the incoming new Sporting Director and the protests that are planned ahead of Saturday’s game.
Málaga delay the inevitable for another week by comfortably winning 2-0 at La Rosaleda this past Saturday against a pretty submissive Mirandés. We talked about the game and the protests that happened before and during the game, before looking ahead to our trip to Alavés where an actual miracle now needs to occur for Málaga to stay up. Plus, we talked about the hunt for a new Sporting Director, Atlético Malagueño’s chase for promotion and the difference between British and Spanish football fans.
After the loss against Ponferradina our believe is gone and we try to accept the that primera RFEF is a fact for Malaga next season. We flushed all our hopes and excelenetas through the toilet, yes it’s just another sh*t show.
It was another raucous afternoon around La Rosaleda on Bank Holiday Monday, as 1000s of fans gathered to greet the Malaga team bus ahead of the game against Huesca. Sadly, the game itself was less raucous and a drab 0-0 draw played out with the headline of the game being Ruben Castro missing an 80th penalty. We reflected on what that point does to Malaga’s survival chances and what they need to do going forward. Plus, I’m sure we discussed the continued fervent support from Malaguistas, the Atlético Malagueño’s bid for promotion and Twitter’s latest obsession: #ExceldelaSalvación
A double helping of Málaga sport on this episode of Vamos a…, as Matt takes in not only Málaga's 0-0 draw against Huesca, but he also goes to his first-ever basketball, as he headed to watch the blue and white-clad Unicaja CB beat Badalona at the Palacio de Deportes José María Martín Carpena. Plus, there's the madness of the recibimiento before the Málaga game and the usual Victoria-fueled views from Matt and other Malaguistas.
It is 3 wins in a row for the now mighty Málaga, as they lugged themselves all the way up to Lugo to secure a 2-0 win - a great effort from the team and an equally superb showing from the 500 or so fans that made the 2000km round trip to the north. We discussed a fairly comfortable win for Málaga up in Galicia, before turning our attention to our next game, which is against Huesca at La Rosaleda. Plus, we discussed the annoyance of those teams around Málaga continuing to get points, Atlético Malagueño making the play-offs and the potential return of a local preseason tournament which once saw Espanyol beat Argentina.
“¡Si, se puede!” indeed, as Málaga made it two wins in a row for the first time this season with a good 1-0 win against play-off-chasing Cartagena at a packed La Rosaleda. We looked back on another Málaga win, before looking ahead to another big game, as Málaga travel to fellow relegation placers Lugo in the lovely green land of Galicia. Plus, we talked about the other big event of this past Sunday, which was our first-ever Guiricast meet-up on Spanish soil with me, Nick and Chris meeting in Málaga with a gang of our regular listeners to enjoy beers, vermouth, occasional tapas and, of course, pacharán. There was a glaring omission though as Alex Ashmore chose to go watch Elton John instead - thus missing out on seeing the Málaga players Sacrifice everything for the 3 points leaving Málaga Still Standing and the Sun Not Quite Going Down on Their Season quite yet.
A jolly time was had by all at La Rosaleda this weekend, as Málaga triumphed 1-0 against play-off chasing Cartagena in front of a lively home crowd. There wasn’t just a full house at La Rosaleda, as Matt was joined by Chris and Nick in his prematch ‘antics’, plus some of our Guiricast followers in the first-ever Guiricast meet-up on Spanish soil. Fair to say a good time was had by all and pacharán reigned supreme by the evening’s end.
Good Friday was a very good Friday indeed for Málaga CF as they very much brought their A-Team and A game to defeat Villarreal’s B Team. However, it sadly looks like it was for nothing, as, as the Easter weekend’s fixtures continued, Málaga’s relegation rivals continued to crucify them as almost all the teams around Málaga won their games leaving Málaga pretty much back to square one. On the positive side, Málaga did put in a great performance away at Villarreal B, so we did have that game to discuss at least, before we looked ahead to a home game this coming Sunday, at a sold-out La Rosaleda, as Málaga take on an in-form Cartagena.

Matt has more success this time around, as he finally gets to see Málaga win away from home, as the team triumphed in the very yellow surroundings of Villarreal's estadio. A great game and great atmosphere from the Malaguistas. Then Matt went off on a pilgrimage to see former Swansea great and Leeds cult hero Pablo Hernández play for 3rd tier Castellon, where he was unsurprised to find some Leeds fans on a similar pilgrimage.

Just like the design on Leganés’ away shirt at La Rosaleda, the sun may be setting on Málaga’s aspirations to stay up, but the sun isn’t down quite yet, as this past Monday night they battled to a 2-0 win against an out-of-form Leganés. And they really did battle in a tough game which provided us with plenty of talking points for this week’s pod. Plus, after a week of international football, Málaga travel abroad this week too, as they cross the border into the beautiful and diminutive land of Andorra this coming Sunday to take on FC Andorra. Of course, Andorra is famous for its mountains and Málaga still have their own mountain to climb to get 3 points on the road and hopefully continue climbing up the league.
A draw, a good performance and still ten points from safety - no you aren’t reading about last game week, but instead Málaga find themselves in the exact same position as the last matchday - except now they are a game closer to Judgement Day of course. This time Málaga took the game to Levante at La Rosaleda in a feisty 0-0 draw - we looked back at that Friday night game and poured over Málaga’s performance, before we poured over the referee’s performance. From opening the Jornada to closing the next Jornada as Málaga’s next game sees Leganes come down to La Rosaleda. Another big game for us discuss.
Málaga take another step closer to the abyss as another game passes by with Málaga still ten points from safety. However, it was a good performance from Málaga out in Gran Canaria against high flying Las Palmas - and, of course, there was a superb debut from our latest boy wonder: Alex Calvo. We go again this Friday night at La Rosaleda with another high flyer coming to town, this time in the form of Levante UD. We reviewed the Las Palmas game and previewed this Friday night’s game, as well as looking at this week’s news, which again features rumours of a Qatari takeover.

Matt headed to La Rosaleda with Atherton Collieries' finest, Emil and Emma, in tow for Málaga's big crunch match against Racing...it was a Genaro crunch that ruined the game for Málaga though as his tackle put Málaga down to ten and ultimately set them on their way to a 1-0 loss. Don't let the football ruin your day though, as Bar Hermanos Madrid was packed with guiris up for a chat this week.
After the defeat against Granada it’s time for probably the most important match for Malaga so far this season against Racing Santander. This week we are joined by Racing fan Andy for the preview.
The chase is on. Málaga shortened the gap to salvation this week and now sit 5 points away from safety ahead of their trip to Andalusian neighbours Granada. We looked ahead to that game in the final part of this week’s podcast, but I think it’s fair to say the highlight of this week’s pod was looking back and reflecting on a superb performance at La Rosaleda this past Monday night. Málaga finally won one of their ‘must win’ games and win in style they did with a 3-0 victory over Zaragoza at a jubilant La Rosaleda. There were plenty of positives to discuss from that game: great goals, great tackles and Rubén Castro bagging himself a La Liga record.
No upsetty and a game to forgetty at Albacete - at least a game to try and forgetty if you are a Málaga fan anyway. This might well be the game that we refer back to as one of the most brutal nails in the coffin at the end of the season. A 3-2 loss at Albacete sends Málaga deeper into the dropzone with the undoubted headline of the game being Luis Muñoz’s moment of madness leaving Málaga with ten men for an hour. We looked back on an action-packed 3-2 loss at Albacete, before we discussed Zaragoza coming to La Rosaleda this coming Monday night. Joining us to talk about this week’s opposition was Zaragoza fan and the co-host of the Spanish Segunda Show, Liam Bambridge.
A Friday night plight under the Friday night lights as Málaga kicked off the Segunda weekend by losing 1-0 to Real Oviedo at La Rosaleda. A poor performance was greeted by angry chants from angry fans at La Rosaleda and the only positive to take from the weekend is that Málaga could have been further away from salvation if it wasn’t for Racing and Ponferradina playing out a draw two evenings later. We got in the obligatory mention of ‘must win game’ again as we looked ahead to our Sunday game against Albacete. Plus we tried to talk about the rumours of a club link to PSG, Manolo Gaspar leaving, Tete Morente not arriving and a mix of references to the Teletubbies, The Darkness and cheese.
New manager in the dugout, but a very similar Málaga this past weekend, as Málaga notched another draw and another night without scoring. We looked back on our 0-0 draw away at Sporting Gijón and discussed whether there were any glimpses of something different brewing on the return of Pellicer. Then, it's Friday night lights for Málaga, as they take on Real Oviedo this Friday evening at La Rosaleda - again, another must-win game. Plus, we gave an update on Manolo Gaspar's seemingly imminent departure from the club and the latest comings and goings ahead of the transfer window closing.

Málaga headed to the Basque country this past Sunday afternoon, but once again there was nothing to bask in at all as Málaga left Eibar with a 2-1 loss, despite scoring an 89th minute equaliser. We discussed how big a blow that loss could be for Málaga’s survival hopes, although we found positives in the form of our two new wingers, Lago Junior and Arvin Appiah. Then we moved on from Esteban Burgos volleys to Burgos Club de Fútbol coming to La Rosaleda this Saturday afternoon. Is this the most ‘must winniest’ of must win gams for Málaga so far this season?
Málaga kicked off 2023 with a 1-1 draw against Tenerife at La Rosaleda. It was a much better performance from Los Blanquiazules, but it was the same old story of failing to put the ball in the back of the net when on top. We discussed that draw and whether the point really is enough for Málaga, as a tough run of fixtures beckons. That tough run starts with an away trip to top of the league at Eibar. Joining us to to preview that game was Eibar fan Liam, who runs the European Football Express on Twitter (@TheEuroFE). Plus, we talked about the latest transfers new at La Rosaleda, a Málaga player turning Super Sonic and we talk about the joys of Nick’s mate Dave - Málaga’s newest fan.
In the first ‘Vamos a…’ episode of the New Year, Matt headed to La Rosaleda to watch Málaga take on Tenerife in what would be an important game for Málaga, but without the desired outcome. A 1-1 draw leaves Málaga still 4 points from safety, despite Málaga putting in a good performance against a tepid Tenerife. Of course, football was just part of the day as Matt was joined by Nick and his mate Dave, who claimed he’d get a Málaga tattoo if his 2-1 prediction came true, and they took in some of the regular Málaga haunts, before the usual prematch drinks at Bar Hermanos Madrid with the Guiri Army.
Happy New Year one and all! 2022 was a tough year for many people and that was certainly the case for Málaga Club de Fútbol too; hopefully it’s a ‘New Year, New Me’, for Málaga as they kick-off 2023 with a home game against Tenerife this coming Saturday evening. To talk all things Málaga v Tenerife, we were joined by Chris Todd of the Armada Sur supporters’ group in Tenerife. Plus, we discussed the transfer window, which has now swung open, and we looked at those names linked with joining Málaga, as well as those who have already departed the club.
Just a few hours after Leo Messi lifted the World Cup, another Argentine was busy lifting spirits at la Rosaleda. A sole Pablo Chavarria goal was enough for Málaga to secure 3 points against Alavés in the last league game of 2022. We discussed that massive win for Málaga as well as having a quick look ahead to our cup game against Gimnàstic de Tarragona, before reviewing our first half of the season so far.
In a week where are other football podcasts are analysing the World Cuo semi-finals, here, at the Guiricast, we’ll be sticking to focusing on the nitty gritty lower realms of Segunda football as Malaga once again flattered to deceive by claiming just two points from six this past week in another two ‘must win’ games. We took a brief look back on Malaga’s rainy 1-1 draw against Granada at La Rosaleda last Thursday and then we looked back on their equally rainy 1-1 away draw at Ibiza from the weekend. Hopefully more points can rain on Málaga this coming weekend as Alaves come to La Rosaleda. We discussed whether Malaga have any chance of claiming a Victoria against the team from Vitoria…
Matt made another long journey up the coast for another Málaga away day - this time he headed to Valencia to watch Los Blanquiazules take on Levante at Estadi Ciutat de València. Málaga sunk to another 1-0 loss, but Matt had an enjoyable trip taking in a night in Alicante and revelling in the awesome city that is Valencia. Plus, it turns out he finds Kiss Cam hilarious.

Málaga won their second home game of the season and only their second home win in the past 12 months with a 1-0 win against Ponferradina. We looked back on that performance and discussed whether it was a much deserved win or did we get lucky? They’ll need a lot of luck in their next game as they travel away to in form Levante with Matt heading along to Valencia to watch the game. Plus, we chatted Málaga being repped at the World Cup, Haitam’s injury and why someone called ‘Lucky Tom’ and Matt changing seats at La Rosaleda led Málaga to victory.
Málaga still sit bottom of the league and are still six points away from safety, but at least there is perhaps a tiny glimpse of hope. Ten-man Málaga battled bravely this past Saturday to a 1-1 draw away at Zaragoza, thanks to Haitam’s first goal for the club and some heroics from Rubén Yáñez in the Málaga goal. We looked back at the game and discussed whether it was a case of a point won or points lost. Then another big game looms as this Saturday evening we take on Ponferradina at La Rosaleda and another game dubbed ‘must win’ by many. Plus, we talked about the lads' trip to Manchester for the Football Content Awards, BlueBay appealing for the end for an end to the judicial administration at the club. Who needs this silly World Cup when you have all this drama going at Málaga Club de Futbol?
It’s been a busy week on the pitch for Málaga CF with 2 games in the space of 4 days. Last Thursday, 10-man Málaga fell 2-1 away at Cartagena despite a brave showing, before we returned home to La Rosaleda on Sunday, where a late Juande equaliser grabbed our boys a deserved point. Málaga remain the league’s colista and now sit 6 points away from safety with no league game for 2 weeks, as this week we have a distraction. That distraction comes in the form of the Copa del Rey - where Málaga travel to SCR Pena Deportiva in an idyllic little corner of ibiza. With a week off work, Matt decided to venture down the coast to watch Málaga play at FC Cartagena on a Thursday night. After 330 days, Málaga have won a home game! Málaga triumphed over Lugo this past Sunday and performed brilliantly in a 3-2 win, with Lugo’s two goals coming in injury time to keep the home fans on their toes at the end. Matt heads to La Rosaleda for the 3rd game of Pepe Mel's tenure and like the three before it, this one also ends in a draw leaving Málaga bottom of the league. There's the usual prematch beers and chat at Bar Hermanos Madrid and even an appearance from another member of the Guiricast cast.
Málaga travelled to Racing Santander this past matchday, but it was certainly not one to get pulses racing. A 0-0 draw in Santander still sees Málaga stuck in the relegation places, but they did climb up one place to 21st in the league. And getting out of those relegation places will not get any easier this coming weekend as the revelation of this season’s Segunda so far come to La Rosaleda: the ball-hogging FC Andorra. Plus, we talked about ticketing issues in Spanish football, Manolo Reina’s form and we still don’t have an answer regarding how to fix our home form.
The Pepe Mel era is underway and it has started with a draw, but the performance was much better than in previous matchdays. ‘Pablo Guede no puede’ - this week saw Pablo Guede sacked as the manager of Málaga. A 3-1 away loss to Tenerife finished off Guede’s time at Málaga CF with many fans and fan groups voicing their displeasure with Guede and those above him. We looked back on that loss at the Helidoro and, fair to say, we had a lot to talk about in regards to that game. But that Guede sacking has led us on to the ‘Highway to Mel’, as Pepe Mel has already been named as the new Head Coach and he will be in the dugout for our game at home this weekend against Villarreal B. We discussed our first thoughts on the new manager and we looked ahead to his first game in charge.
Is the writing on the wall for Pablo Guede after another loss? Well, the writing was literally written on the wall for Guede to go this week, as a group of fans graffitied the walls of Málaga’s training ground with their thoughts on Guede and Manolo Gaspar - but the club still seem to be backing their man. On this week’s episode, we looked back at Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Huesca before looking ahead to another away game this coming Monday, as Málaga head south and away from the mainland to Tenerife. To discuss that game we were joined by the Armada Sur’s Chris Todd.

Guiricast Episode 100 - amazingly we have somehow made 100 episodes of this stuff and we can now consider ourselves part of the podcast 100 club. Quite a landmark episode for us in a week which might be looked back on as a landmark week for Málaga this season. Real Sociedad B narrowed the gap to just 1 point to Málaga in 18th, before Málaga earned a credible draw against Oviedo to increase that gap to 2 points. The heat is very much on Málaga now, as Amorebieta and Real Sociedad B, below them in the league, gain ground over Málaga in the race to stay above the relegation precipice. Málaga did not help their own plight by losing their Friday night game away to Las Palmas with goals from Jonathan Viera and Jesé helping Las Palmas grab all 3 points, despite Aleix Febas replying with a goal late on. And things don’t get any easier as we welcome in-form Real Oviedo to La Rosaleda this Saturday evening. Joining us to discuss that game was Oviedo fan and all-around Spanish football boffin Alexandra Johnson.

It was back to back defeats for Malaga, as Huesca took all 3 points home from La Rosaleda on Sunday in what was probably the worst game of the season. A perculiar team selection yielded no change in fortunes for an ailing Naxto Gonzalez as goals from Mateu and Seoane condemed the home side to a 2-0 defeat. Chris, Alex and Nick look back over the game whilst giving their verdicts on how Naxto still has a job, before looking ahead to Malaga's next game, an away day to high-flying Girona on Friday.
Things continued to go south for Málaga in the south of Madrid, as Málaga lose 1-0 to relegation rivals Fuenlabrada. A Mohamed Bouldini goal is enough to defeat a hapless Málaga and even with a 7 point cushion from the relegation zone, it is fair to say that the Guiricast are worried. We discussed, once again, what is going wrong for Málaga before looking ahead to our home game against Huesca and establishing that the Guiricast is now very much a ‘Natxo out’ podcast. It’s the start of 2022 and a time when you will hear people spouting the phrase ‘New Year, New Me’ and it seems that Málaga are very much following the ‘New Year, New Me’ philosophy. It’s out with the Málaga of 2021 and in with the new 2022 version, as Málaga have finally won their first league game away from home this season in the opening game of 2022 We’ll be looking back on our win at Alcorcón, alongside our newest Guiricast member Sergio, who was at Santo Domingo to watch Málaga get the 3 points. We will also look forward to our first home game of 2022 this coming Sunday, as Málaga take on Sporting Gijon, as well as looking over what has been going at the club over the winter break.
Feliz Navidad We are back for another Christmas special full of festive cheer and Christmas crackers…well...sort of. Sadly, Málaga got themselves thrown on the naughty list this week with a second consecutive defeat at La Rosaleda. Like every Christmas, there are some parts you just have to slog through at times and we’ll be unwrapping what went wrong at La Rosaleda this past Saturday. At least Jose Alberto tried to get in the mood though by wearing the sort of cardigan which Bing Crosby would have been proud of. To try to lift our moods we interviewed Tatiana Rodriguez of the all-conquering Málaga Femenino, there was a bit of festive chat and a surprise special guest: Marc Harrison - Matt’s brother.
After weeks and weeks, Málaga finally put in a great performance away from home by securing a point at Eibar in a game they could have easily won. Could this be the big turning point for Málaga’s travel issues?...Well, apparently not, as our boys were dumped unceremoniously out of the cup by 3rd tier Rayo Majadahonda. After a rather quiet period for Málaga off the pitch, disaster struck as FIFA imposed a transfer ban on us. In this podcast we discuss the implications of said ban, how Málaga can avoid it and FIFA, the organisation as a whole. On the field, things have taken a turn for the worse in the league as Málaga lost their undefeated home record with a 2-1 loss to SD Amorebieta. This is was the main topic of our discussion as well as some referee/VAR talk. In spite of all this, there is a glimmer of positivity as we look back on Málaga’s recent cup success against Peña Sport to try and heal the wounds from our analysis of our performance against Amorebieta. Finally, we take a look forward to Málaga’s next two games, Eibar away and our opponent in the next round of the Copa del Rey, Rayo Majadahonda. It’s Canary Islands week at La Rosaleda this week with home games against Tenerife and Las Palmas. We started Monday night with another 1-0 victory at La Rosaleda, as Tenerife fell victim to Málaga’s good home form (and some rather suspect refereeing). We look back over Monday’s night game against Tenerife, before looking ahead to our game with Las Palmas with Matt Rayns of the UDLP UK Fan Zone. Plus, we talk about the continued success of Málaga Femenino, Victoria beer in Doncaster Tesco and Chris’ burgeoning love for all things Swedish.
For the latest Guiricast Plus episode, we talked to Dani Strindholm - Málaga's highly thought of young Swedish goalie, who has played between the sticks for Atlético Malagueño and Sweden’s U19s and has been with the senior squad of Málaga on several occasions. He tells us about his upbringing in Málaga and his love for Málaga CF; how he still has a season ticket at La Rosaleda and his trips to the stadium with his dad; his ambitions for the future with his eyes set on more senior football soon; and he answers the big question of whether he prefers albondigas or Swedish meatballs.
After a brief discussion about Málaga’s 2-1 home win against Real Sociedad B, we move on to discussing our nightmare performance in Cartagena. The worst performance of the season? Undoubtedly. We discuss Málaga’s lame 3-1 away defeat to Cartagena, as well as talking to Chris Todd about our upcoming game against Tenerife. Plus, Matt pitches his Bobby Boquerón mascot idea, we talk about fan treatment in Spain and we listen to Chris eat some crisps.
On a chilly Thursday night at La Rosaleda, Málaga defeat Real Sociedad B 2-1 to continue their excellent home form, which now moves them up to 8th in the league. Matt heads to La Rosaleda to watch a decent performance from the home side, but an exceptional one from Antonin, who looked back to his best in this game. Plus, there's the usual prematch stuff, such as Matt talking about Manchester a lot again and offending a Manchester United fan; we chat with Jordan about what is more stressful: just becoming a dad or just becoming a Málaga season ticket holder; and, again Victoria beer gets mentioned numerous times (they really should be sponsoring us by now).
Another home game, another game without defeat - Málaga’s excellent home form continues with a comfortable 1-0 win over Lugo. We discuss Genaro’s excellent finish, a return to form for Antoñín and we wax lyrical about Victor Gomez and his performance - a performance we unanimously decide is the best individual performance of the season so far. Then we look ahead to our game against Oviedo, but instead end up talking about Woody Allen statues and whether the exterior of Oviedo’s stadium is aesthetically pleasing or not. Plus, we talk Hummel shirts, all the Málaga squad heading to the gender reveal party for an expectant father in the squad and we introduce Nick Bell, the latest member to the Guiricast backroom staff.
Matt takes you to La Rosaleda once again, as he takes in Málaga’s comfortable 1-0 win over Lugo. Matt’s day started with him befriending a German guy in the bar and convincing him to join him at the game - and of course at Bar Hermanos Madrid, where the usual array of guiris could be found. You can expect the usual nonsense of Victoria beer chat, Kevin being compared to Kevin de Bruyne, Matt being scared by loud bangs (again) and the thrills of listening to him run to make the last bus home.
It has been a busy week for Málaga on the pitch having played two games in the space of four days. First, we had a 1-1 draw with Zaragoza at La Rosaleda on Saturday night, before we travelled up to Zaragoza’s neighbours Huesca on Tuesday night to play out another draw - this time a 0-0. Both points will be considered disappointing, but disappointing for very different reasons, with a controversial VAR decision playing a key role to stop Málaga from winning at Huesca (Chris decides to use an Outhere Brothers song to depict his feelings on the decision). We’ll look back over those two games and we’ll also be looking ahead to our game v Lugo this coming Saturday with Lugo fan Carlos.
Matt takes you to La Rosaleda once again, as Málaga take on Zaragoza. A fairly underwhelming Málaga performance leaves Matt disappointed, but he does get to enjoy Brandon’s beautiful backheeled goal (although he initially thinks it is Roberto’s goal). Plus, you can expect controversial Spanish beer views from one of the guiris, talk of Huddersfield’s finest brewery and Derek the Geordie not wearing a tea towel on his head.
Málaga stopped their run of 3 away losses in a row with a well-earned point away to Valladolid Friday night. We’ll look back at that game and rejoice in the fact that Brandon Thomas got his first goal for the club. Then, this coming Saturday, we return to Fortress La Rosaleda, as Real Zaragoza come to town. We spoke to Zaragoza fan and Spanish Segunda Show co-host Liam Bambridge about all things Zaragoza - from their more glorious past to the relative shambles they find themselves in at the moment. Plus, we chat about the fashion sense of footballers and managers (again), Chris’ upcoming trip to London and which member of England’s Italia 90 squad would we most like to go to a Segunda game with.
It was a return to Home Sweet Home form for Málaga this past weekend. After two losses on the road, Málaga bounced back with a comfortable 1-0 win over Fuenlabrada on Sunday afternoon. In our review of the game, there is special praise for Brandon, a big thumbs up for Mathieu ‘French Cuisine’ Peybernes’ glorious headed goal and praise for a dog wearing a Málaga shirt. To look ahead to Friday’s game against Real Valladolid, we were joined by Alex Fitzpatrick of the Spanish Segunda Show to give us the lowdown on La Pucela, the Segunda in general and his views on Málaga so far this season. Plus, we talk Al Thani, Victoria beer, managerial fashion and much more.
Fortress La Rosaleda strikes again as Málaga continue their excellent home form with a 1-0 win against Fuenlabrada. Matt was there to watch it and bask in the glory of the three points and in the prematch and postmatch frivolities. On the latest Vamos a La Rosaleda Matt talks with lots of Geordies, we celebrate Brandon Thomas being great out on the left and you can even expect an appearance from former Oldham and Rochdale centre back Keith Hicks.
That’s now two losses in a row for Málaga, as their woes on the road continue. This time the team lost 2-1 to a very good - and table-topping - Sporting Gijón, with the added disadvantage of having ten men for over 80 minutes. We look back at a feisty game in El Molinón, before looking forward to returning home to La Rosaleda this Sunday to take on Fuenlabrada. Plus, Chris celebrates the ‘hooligan’ spirit of Brandon Thomas, Matt reveals he might have cursed Escassi’s number 23 shirt and we discover there is little interesting to say about the Fuenlabrada area of Madrid.

We discuss the win that took Málaga into the Top 6, before we turn our attention to the Top 2, as Málaga head to second place Ponferradina this coming Sunday. Plus, we are joined by Girona Jim who, unsurprisingly, gives us the lowdown on Girona - Málaga’s next opponents. It was the first game of the Segunda season and the first league game at La Rosaleda with fans for 526 days. Matt was never going to miss it and so he decided to record his day out in the first episode of our new ‘Vamos a La Rosaleda’ series. For his first La Rosaleda trip in almost 18 months, he was lucky enough to be joined by his fellow Guiricaster Chris and they got to witness the exciting start of the Jose Alberto revolution up close against our new manager's former team, Mirandés. Plus, they got to enjoy our new wonderkid Kevin, indulge in the first ‘Points mean Pacharan’ of the season and meet a local man who wandered off to Valencia for almost two decades and was now attending his first Málaga in 17 years! It was a long way away from a dull 0-0.

After a few weeks of speculation, Sergio Pellicer has confirmed that he will be leaving Málaga CF at the end of the season. We react to the news and discuss who could be the new manager. Also, we were delighted to be joined by Oviedo fan Alexandra Jonson to talk about Málaga’s 1-0 loss to Oviedo this week, as well as her dislike for Eurovision.
We were delighted to be joined by Málaga right-back, Iván Calero. We talked about his time at Málaga so far, playing without fans, VAR, Escassi apparently not being scary and his time spent with the likes of Diego Simeone, Steve McLaren and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.
As thunder and lightning hammered the Costa del Sol, all was calm on the pitch at La Rosaleda. Málaga put in a composed performance against promotion chasing Mallorca and very much deserved their 1-1 draw. We look back on us getting a penalty for only the second time this season, the brilliance of Juan Soriano and the guy with the Mini name, but the big talent. Plus, we look ahead to our game against Oviedo next week, Redbird’s investment in Málaga CF and who we want to get promoted from Segunda B and join us in the league next season.
As expected against the best team in the league, Málaga succumbed to a 3-0 loss to Espanyol - a club who will almost certainly be joining the Primera very soon. Having listened to us lament the defeat and with Chris’ delivering some interesting analogies on how the game reminded him of dating, we looked ahead to our next game. From playing 1st in the league, we now go on to play 2nd in the league, Mallorca. With their own play-off party seeming impossible now, Málaga could be heading to a different promotion party this weekend. This Sunday, Málaga travel to Espanyol to take on the league leaders, where the hosts can get promoted if results go their way elsewhere. We were joined by Mark the ‘Mancunian Perico’ to talk all things Espanyol ahead of the game. All of football was dwarfed this week by the news of a potential European Super League. It would have been amiss of us not to offer our views on this proposal and how it could affect football and our own beloved Málaga. Of course, we didn’t ignore the going-ons at Málaga, as they drew 1-1 at Las Palmas. Is that the end of their ambitious play-off hopes now? Or does a win against Fuenlabrada this coming weekend still give hope?

A 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano means we have fun talking about Málaga playing well at home for a change with particular love for the superb Luis Muñoz. As well as analysing the Rayo game, we look ahead to our game versus Mirandés with Doncaster Rovers fan Tony Greenall, a man who has stumbled into a soft spot for Mirandés too.
Valentine’s Day evening proves to be not very fruitful for Málaga in Gijón, as they slump to another defeat . that is now one win in nine for the team, but was there more attacking intent than usual? Málaga’s winless home streak continues as this weekend’s loss to Zaragoza now means it is four months without a win at La Rosaleda. We discuss what went wrong, while Alex suggests how his beloved Yeovil Town deal with these sort of situations. To get over more despair at La Rosaleda, Málaga head north to Gijón this upcoming weekend to take on Sporting and so we talk about the league’s current top goalscorer, Asturian cider, a 1982 Oscar winner and that time a Sporting legend got kidnapped.
As Ismael’s Instagram post read on the weekend, ‘No pain, no gain’ - this was referring to his head being bandaged up, but it could also refer to watching the painfully dull opening 91 minutes of Alcorcón v Málaga to then being rewarded with that winning goal in the 92nd minute. We look back over Málaga’s first league win of 2021, before looking ahead to our upcoming game at home against Real Zaragoza. Málaga’s pilgrimage to Ponferrada doesn’t quite go to plan and ends with a red card each for Benkhemassa and Pellicer. We look back on our 1-1 draw away to Ponferradina and discuss Pellicer’s tactics, Pellicer’s subs and Pellicer being forced to walk through the streets of Málaga naked Game of Thrones-style. SHAME! Plus there is a lot of cucumber and mascot talk, as we look ahead to our game v Leganés and the growing following of the ‘Points mean Pacharán’ initiative (and the perils of putting lid-less pacharán in your fridge).
Málaga finally wear the fabled yellow third shirt and pick up 3 points whilst wearing it. It was a profitable day at Sabadell and we look back on how Málaga won with an unlikely goal from Iván Calero and another beautiful header from Pablo Chavarría. This week, we were also delighted to be joined by the most famous guiri in Ponferrada, Chris Pidgeon - the ultimate Ponferradina fan. He explains how a walk on the famous El Camino led to him becoming a Ponferradina fan and how that led to him cycling to away days around Spain; delivering speeches to the town alongside the players and mayor; and creating his own museum in his house...oh, and there is a little bit of a Ponferradina v Málaga preview too.
During Halloween week, Málaga have horrors of their own with a 3-1 loss to Mallorca followed by a 3-0 home loss to Espanyol. We discuss what went wrong over the past two games and there are some strong views on Pellicer from one of the Guiricast ensemble. Next up for Los Boquerones is Sabadell, which gives Matt the opportunity to talk about his favourite Spanish bank and make a lot of rubbish banking puns (see the title), as well as discussing Stoickhov, Sabadell’s Spanish/Scottish goalie and what Málaga need to do to improve.

Segunda División football is back! Málaga CF are back! The 2020/21 season gets underway this coming weekend with Málaga's season beginning with a trip to Tenerife. To help preview the game, we are joined by Chris Todd - the President of Tenerife's international supporters' group, the Armada Sur. Who knows who will still be a part of Málaga's squad by the weekend, as we look over the latest cuts to the squad and the new faces at the club, as well as reviewing the brand new kits (which have caused quite a stir amongst Malaguistas).

Málaga are staying up! After a crazy season, Málaga secured another year in the Segunda with a win against Alcorcón, which included the two best goals of the season. It's not all joy though, as we discuss the tumultuous summer that lies ahead for the club.
