The 90s were the golden age for guitar-based bands made up of (mostly) dudes that were in touch with their feelings, and had an undeniable urge to scream about it or at least put their unique spin on songs about love and youthful exuberance. The ever-knowledgeable Ryan Stockstad helps ATTT wrap up our conversation about this particular place, time, genre and subgenre that spawned massive successes in the following decade. The sound of what we've come to know as "emo" from the insane popularity of bands like Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco in the 2000s differs pretty wildly from the sound of the bands that spawned the genre. 90s emo is a particular brand of emo - much more moody, more lo-fi, more rooted in punk, hardcore, new wave, and bands like Fugazi. In large part thanks to Nirvana, little scenes began popping up all over small town America throughout the 90s, and seemingly random outcroppings like Boise, ID Mesa, AZ, Kansas City, MO and Milwaukee, WI became hotbeds of guitar driven heart-on-sleeve bands made up of kids getting in touch with their emotions while bashing out some cathartic rock n roll. You didn't have to be there, but it helps and this week's guest was right in the thick of it back in the day as was your humble host. Ryan Stockstad makes his long-awaited return to the pod to take a trip down memory lane with a kick ass soundtrack.

25 years ago, the world's collective mind was blown by a new collection of songs from England's premier rock band Radiohead. The world of music documentaries is one filled with riches. Other than simply listening to it, there's no better way to absorb the power and importance of music and its ability to change the world. There's a reason why Decline Of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris' anthropologic look at the underground hardcore punk scene in late 70s/early 80s LA, was selected by the Library Of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant". That film is much more than images of angry-looking white dudes spitting on each other. It takes the viewer to a specific place and time, and shows how music can move people in strange and fascinating ways. There are dozens of great music documentaries that tell strange and fascinating stories and ATTT is lucky to have Sir Maurice Bursztynski, co-host of the music film podcast See Hear on board to discuss 10 of our favorites. We feel sorry for you if you missed it. The 90s were a time of artistic expression and exploration. Punk taught Generation X that they could do anything, and they did when given the chance in the 90s. Behold! The musical scientists that run ATTT have discovered the only morally acceptable way for two bespectacled middle-aged white guys to talk about their favorite reggae songs on a podcast. The Old Boy Himself Ryan Blake may not be a bonafide reggae artist, but he has been a serious and authentic reggae fan for decades. His bright idea is to focus on a curious and surprisingly fruitful subgenre in the reggae universe - reggae songs by non-reggae artists. The songs featured in this week's episode come from bands and artists that are decidedly not reggae artists but for whatever reason decided they to take a flyer on reggae. The 80's were a golden age for music in Los Angeles. The punk scene was vibrant and menacing, as all punk scenes should be. Metal was encroaching and by the end of the decade was ready for its close up. Meanwhile throughout the entire decade there was a riot going on over on the Sunset Strip. The Starwood, The Whiskey, The Roxy and The Troubadour were packed night after night with up and coming bands, many of which would be launched into the stratosphere by MTV and by sheer force of personality, musicianship and great songs. This golden age was documented well by this week's special guest, the uncanny photographer extraordinaire Don Adkins, whose camera lens captured moments that will only live on in memories. Don was there for the whole thing and had a front row seat for the early years and pre-stadium-touring versions of some of our favorite bands that haunted the strip in the 1980s. Buckle up.

If you people seriously haven't gotten hip to it by now, the early 90s was a golden age for music. Hip hop was exploding on both coasts, with gangsta and conscious rap jousting for supremacy. In the rock world, a weird underground that had been percolating for a decade finally came to the surface when the Seattle scene blew the doors wide open for bands who refused to be defined and had to be labeled "alternative" because there hadn't been anything like it to that point. Yep, we grew up in the thick of it, and have fond memories of 1992 in particular as a year where just about any band that had a shred of coolness and weirdness could emerge into the mainstream, using the doors opened by Nirvana at the end of 1991. Our friends from Wisconsin DJ, Chris and DIxie know a thing or two about 1992, and we can't help but get a bit nostalgic for a time when creativity seemed to be everywhere, especially coming from our stereos. There will never be another time like it.

This seemingly-convoluted hyhen-filled topic is a lot more important to the history of rock n roll than most people realize. In order to reach the level of the rock n roll super-stratosphere, you first have to get to the stratosphere. Once you reach the top, you have to keep that train going, and only the rare great bands and artists have what it takes with the elusive Highly-Anticipated Follow-Up Album That Delivers. Frequently a massively successful album is followed by a dud, ending in the dreaded, but still commendable one-hit-wonder. The bands and artists that last are the ones that can follow up a commercial and/or critical triumph with a worthy follow-up. With the albums on this list, the bands and artists lived up to the hype and cemented their place in rock n roll immortality. Luckily we have the affable (and vaxxable) Dustin Prince on board to help us count down our favorites.

You don't have to be a supersnob to appreciate classical music. Take the man himself, the paterfamilias, my dad Paul Eisen. He has had no formal music training and never played an instrument, but his love and appreciation for the greatest music ever written is just as real and genuine as your friendly neighborhood symphony conductor's. The iconic pieces of classical music featured in this list are so-called iconic because they truly have been a part of our lives, and appear in movies and tv shows, in advertising and more to this very day. Our man in Long Island Billy Joel has given us so much over the years - amazing memories of live concert experiences, moments while enjoying his songs to laugh or cry or simply be moved by a great song and so much more. Artists are curious creatures. Many of them are restless souls who constantly obsess over their art and think a lot about the finished product, often for years after it has been released to the public. I would guess that Pablo Picasso would probably look at a work of his from decades earlier and immediately begin thinking of ways to change it to reflect his current self, as artists are want to change themselves over time just like the rest of us. Well, in music, sometimes artists are afforded the opportunity to bring up a piece from the past and reimagine it as something completely different, often for personal reasons. With its humble beginnings in the coffee shops and jazz clubs of London and Paris and comprised of a new crop of young beatniks and bohemians, the mod subculture was codified in the mid 1960s. The scene was marked by forward fashion, scooters, hatred of rockers and a bunch of new bands made up of fans of black music - soul, r&b, reggae, blues and modern jazz, but with a youthful, amphetamine-fueled rock n roll edge. Over the decades "mod" as a movement has come in and out of fashion, but there are certain bands that all mods young and old can agree on. There's The Who, and everyone else featured in this episode. Fellow mods and sods Mike Bisch and Darren Lolk help us on our journey through the incredible history of mod, and the bands that were its soundtrack.
