The episode "Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain" features pain therapist Katie Rothwell, who shares her journey with chronic pain. She discusses how pain isn’t just physical but also linked to emotions and stress. Her struggles with back pain while solo parenting and serving in the military shaped her perspective. This led her to develop the "Beat Pain" approach to help others regain control.

Katie explains how brain health affects pain perception and how stress amplified her suffering. A TED Talk by Lorimer Moseley helped her understand pain as a brain-processed experience. By changing her mindset and lifestyle, she found lasting relief. Now, she empowers others to break free from chronic pain and reclaim their lives.

Have you ever wondered how past injuries might be affecting your brain? Dr. Ruth never did—until she started struggling with focus, memory loss, and emotional ups and downs. What seemed like normal stress or aging turned out to be something far deeper: undiagnosed brain trauma.

At 21, Dr. Ruth had what seemed like a minor accident. She fell off her bike without a helmet, hit her head, and brushed it off. Over time, she experienced more falls, sports injuries, and even car accidents—never realizing that each one could be damaging her brain in ways she couldn't see. Years later, she began experiencing brain fog, cognitive decline, and mood swings, and she knew something wasn’t right.

Your brain is your most valuable asset—learning how to protect and improve it can change your life. Don’t ignore the signs of cognitive decline. Watch now to discover how you can take control of your brain health!

She supports women on their journeys to motherhood practically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Part of her mission is to the heal the emotional wounds of the mother and she uses various modalities to do this. She also facilitates women’s empowerment groups helping women to birth more of themselves

In this episode we talk about her journey to becoming a midwife. She discusses the importance of ensuring autonomy of the midwife so they can work with the mothers on their journey through pregnancy and into motherhood. She also shares how she overcame imposter syndrome and negative self talk to support women in overcoming their birthing trauma and breastfeeding challenges

We discuss the importance of setting up the right environment for a mother to give birth, as well as the right environment for your baby to grow. Alison discusses how birthing trauma and medical intervention that the mother doesn't expect can have a dramatic impact on their ability to breast feed, and how she supports her clients with Havening to release their birthing trauma and reconnect with their body

I share my personal birthing experience as well as my miscarriage, and we discuss the importance of spiritual connection between parent and child in utero as well as after birth

Alison goes on to discuss the importance of addressing any of your unmet needs as a child to avoid this being translated into adulthood and parenthood and offers her advice to any parent who is concerned that their child or themselves is struggling with birthing trauma

Dr Leo Galland, MD rejoins Dr Ruth Allan on Episode 084 of her show 'Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain' and fourth episode in series 5. Dr Galland has spent the past 40 years treating patients with complex, chronic illness.

He has developed innovative approaches to evaluation and treatment, that helped to create the foundation for functional medicine. His latest focus has been on the reversal of long covid.

In this episode we talk about how to prevent long covid and reverse any complications that may arise should you experience long covid - and ultimately how to recover from it.

Dr Galland discusses what happens when we get long covid, how the virus enters the body, the cells and organs that it attacks and how, and the subsequent symptoms that arise - focusing on the key factors in the web of long covid.

Dr Galland talks about the impact long covid has on the blood vessels and blood flow, resulting in disturbances in blood flow, even in young people. He explains the impact it has on mast cell activation, triggering an inflammatory immune system response.

He then goes into detail as to what you can do about it personally if you are experiencing any of these symptoms associated with long covid, including those experienced by children.

I found this episode absolutely fascinating as there is so much we can personally do to reverse and recover from long covid. I personally found Dr Galland's information he shares on covid and long covid invaluable in my own personal journey of recovery, having had covid twice (that I am aware of).

In Dr Galland's view, the biggest problem with Covid and long Covid is the lack of communication around what is going on in your body and what action you can take to help your recovery. I hope that this episode goes some way to enhance the communication necessary to the general public to aid your recovery or that of those you care about to restore health, wealth and vitality.

Sometimes, until it’s at your front door, you don’t think about it enough. Every 15 minutes someone dies by suicide in the United States, every 40 seconds worldwide, with suicide attempts being even more frequent, and every 16 minutes someone is left behind, asking ‘why?’

Why are so many people losing faith in life at a time when more of us are doing better than ever before? It’s a question most of us would rather continue to avoid

Following in the footsteps of the last decades’ successful international initiatives regarding cancer and HIV/AIDS, our main aim is to encourage an up to date discussion about the worldwide phenomenon of increasing suicide – not just on the margins, but at the center of society, where it belongs

Because as soon as we start to talk about things openly, we’ll find better solutions than what we’ve had so far

A Chance for Happiness Foundation has been a member of World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) since 2018 and has organised annual charity events benefitting Mental Health in Velden am Wörthersee, Austria 2017, Vienna, Austria 2018, Paris, France 2019, Monaco 2020 and – following the global C-virus outbreak – at Laxenburg Castle near Vienna, Austria 2022.

Harald Walter Azmann is co-founder of A Chance for Happiness Foundation after his daughter Lisa died by suicide and the catalyst behind this inspiring initiative

Dr Ruth Allan is supporting this initiative as in November 2016 she hit rock bottom when she had suicidal thoughts after being told by her employer she had no emotional intelligence, shortly after having a miscarriage

Her grandfather died by suicide when her mother was only six years old, and so this deep low ignited her to take action to optimise her brain health to live a healthier, happier life, which led her to having her daughter Lilly in 2018

Industry leaders, family leaders and entrepreneurs now hire her to live a healthier, happier life by unchaining their pain from past trauma, unlocking the secrets to greater mental clarity and performance and unleashing their full potential by optimising their unique brain

Everyone deserves a chance for happiness

Dr Nathan S Bryan joins Dr Ruth Allan on Episode 082 of her show 'Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain' and second episode in series 5. Dr. Bryan is an international expert in nitric biochemistry and molecular medicine. His more than 20 years in academic research led to many seminal discoveries, and has resulted in dozens of issued U.S. and International patents

Products from his innovations are the most successful nitric oxide products in the market and responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue around the globe and have improved patient care for more than a decade

In this episode Dr Bryan talks about why nitric oxide is so important for our cardiovascular and cognitive health, and the role it plays, with our brain being one of the main organs impacted by nitric oxide production.

He talks about how nitric oxide is created and what insults we are imposing on our body to reduce our natural ability to generate it

Dr Bryan discusses the effect of nitric oxide on COVID, and why it's so important to prevent infection and reduce the ability of the spike protein to attack your cells. He also discusses what improvements have been observed when restoring nitric oxide production, from improvements in blood pressure, exercise performance, sexual function, brain health and cognition as well as regression of cardiovascular disease and reversing heart disease

I loved this episode as nitric oxide is such a fundamentally important redox signalling molecule that requires much greater attention to empower people to enhance and optimise their nitric oxide production for long term cognitive and cardiovascular health

Plus - and what is really important for me, is this is something we can teach at kindergarten and in schools. Educating children on why nitric oxide generation in our body is so important and what simple steps they can take to improve the generation of nitric oxide and eradicate the insults that are depleting our bodies of this vital cellular messenger.

Pip Delamere-Wright joins Dr Ruth Allan on Episode 077 of her show 'Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain.' Pip is a retired Officer having served 17 years in the British Army. During this time she served in various countries and was the first female Army Commando. She served as part of 3 Commando Brigade and was deployed on Op Telic 1

After the birth of her son in 2012, the death of her brother from cancer and her mum attending chemotherapy, Pip suffered from severe postnatal depression. The military mental health unit in Catterick literally saved her life

When she retired in 2014 Pip retrained as an outdoor leader working with children with additional support needs and more recently qualifying as a Therapeutic Forest Practitioner. Pip proactively spends time focusing on and supporting others, encouraging positive physical and mental health

In this episode Pip discusses her journey from joining the military to becoming the first female Army Commando and the importance of mindset in defining what you are capable of achieving

She dives deep into what led her being diagnosed with post natal depression, how this affected her and what she was able to do to navigate her way through it and re-establish balance in her life

She discusses how this led her to founding Operation Cairngorm, which allows individual to reconnect with nature, educating them on how they can use it to calm their body and mind

I loved this episode. We had so much to talk about. I find this such an important topic to shine the light on the impact of post natal depression and to raise awareness to all those parents out there to know that you are not alone and there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel

Grayson Hart joins Dr Ruth Allan on Episode 076 of her show 'Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain.' Grayson is a former international rugby player with a career of 14 years as a pro. After a chronic knee injury and severe reliance on painkillers having a negative effect on his mental and physical health, Grayson discovered the profound power of legal and non addictive cannabis extract supplements and mushrooms to change his life.

He went on to launch Puresport, known as one of the UK's leading innovative natural wellness brands, who have built a community with a shared vision centred around mind and body wellness.

In this interview Grayson provides some inspirational insights into his childhood and how his demand to know why at school, often perceived as confrontational when he was young, ultimately became his superpower.

We talk about the challenges of educational systems that are unable to accommodate or adapt to different brain types. Grayson discusses his moment of shame and the pivotal moment in his life that led him to playing for the Auckland blues at 19 years old. He talks about the impact of losing his dad two seasons into the game, and how his attempt to emotionally suppress his grief led to physical expression that became self-destructive.

Grayson shares how he transitioned from professional rugby in Scotland to founding Puresport as a result of a chronic knee injury, and what he discovered about himself on his journey, including realising the need to shift his perspective from extrinsic to intrinsic motivation.

I loved this episode as it highlights how important it is to adapt our educational system to allow children to uncover their superpowers, the impact of childhood trauma on our behavioural responses. In particular I loved how Grayson showed, despite what life throws at you, there is always an opportunity to be uncovered in every hurdle in life you face to enable you to achieve optimal performance.

Jamie Thomson joins Dr Ruth Allan on Episode 075 of her show ‘Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain’

Jamie is an ex professional footballer, ex Royal Navy sailor and now successful entrepreneur in the area of sport, exercise, health & wellbeing and bio technologies. He is passionate about helping people understand the easy things they can do to benefit their health, while driving the awareness of Cellular health and Redox biology in the U.K. and around the world

In this episode we talk about the fascinating signalling pathways in our body and mind, the redox signalling molecules responsible for supporting our cellular communication and how to amplify the signal strength to enhance our internal communication network and ultimate aid recovery and enhance human performance

As a Reservist officer in the Royal Corps of Signals, I found this conversation absolutely fascinating as Jamie shares the extraordinary capability of a ground-breaking new product ASEA Redox that produces the redox signalling molecules, which is native to our body in liquid and gel form for us to use

This breakthrough health technology developed in the USA has been considered as significant as the breakthrough in penicillin, one of the effects of which is up-regulating glutathione by 800%

In 1998 the Nobel Prize was awarded on Redox signalling molecules, without which we would die within 3 seconds, and post puberty we lose our production redox signalling molecules about 1% a year

Jamie provides some fascinating case studies of those that have used this product to support their healing journey on some significant health challengesBe sure to rate and review this episode on any podcasting platform.

Dr Ruth Allan goes LIVE as a new ‘Brain Bites’ segment to her podcast ‘Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain’

In this LIVE episode, Dr Ruth draws on several guest episodes of her show ‘Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain’ and her own experience to provide parents and carers with ten simple steps they can take to empower their children to become warriors for their health – starting with creating food warriors.

Why?

Because at present, in the USA, our children are predicted to die earlier than us due to the state of our food system – in essence, we are killing our children early.

And being a parent, Dr. Ruth is NOT ok with that.

In this episode, Dr. Ruth talks about what you can do to nurture healthier, happier, calmer kids who, rather than being victims to the toxins in the food system that is poisoning their minds and bodies, are more EMPOWERED to take back control and change the food system to one that benefits their health, rather than just the food industry.

She shares the shocking statistics that are influencing what we eat and the impact it is having on us. She discusses why it’s so important to start talking about the brain and falling in love with it, what you can do as a parent or carer personally to become ambassadors for a better brain and longer health span and life span, and how you can support your children in becoming food warriors.

We would love to know what of the ten steps you will implement in your family or your organisation – let us know! If you’d love to share your story of how these ten steps have influenced change in your family or your organisation, whether an educational institution or business, we’d love to hear from you. Henry Dimbleby joins Dr Ruth Allan LIVE on her show ‘Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain’ on Monday, 27 March 2023

Henry Dimbleby is the author of the book ‘Ravenous: How to get ourselves and our planet into shape’. Published in March 2023, this analysis of the food system – how it is malfunctioning and what to do about it, build on the work he did in the independent National Food Strategy, described by Prue Leith as “the best government document that’s ever come out.”

In 2013, he co-authored The School Food Plan, a blueprint for the government setting out actions to transform what children eat in schools and how they learn about food. It resulted in the introduction of free school meals for all children up to the age of eight and cooking lessons being made obligatory for all children up to 14 years old.

From 2018 to 2023, Dimbleby was the lead non-executive board member of the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, serving under Michael Gove, Theresa Villiers, George Eustice, Ranil Jayawardene, and Therese Coffey. He has also advised the Labour party on improving the food system’s sustainability and security.

Henry previously worked as a Strategy Consultant at Bain & Company, working with businesses on strategy, performance improvement, and organizational design. Before that, he worked as a journalist at The Daily Telegraph and a chef at the Michelin-starred Four Seasons Inn on the Park.

In this episode, we talk about the chronic health epidemic associated with our current food system and the actionable steps we can take to improve the health of ourselves and our planet through a system-centric approach.

We discuss the importance of educating our children in healthy food for their minds and body and the shocking statistics concerning the food system and how it is killing us and the planet.

We discuss the risk of drugging our way out of the problem rather than dealing with the root cause and how we could be at the cusp of a new scientific revolution for using big data to understand and address these complex systems.

Henry talks about how the food system is the most significant cause of biodiversity, deforestation, freshwater pollution, the devastation of freshwater life in the oceans, and how, after energy, it’s the second most significant cause of climate change, with governments subsidizing the destruction of nature to the tune of $500Bn a year.

We discuss the steps to establishing a balancing feedback loop to address the food system’s environmental impact. Henry talks about some of the steps that are being taken and how we are dipping our toe in the water to find a solution rather than jumping in head first to create a ripple effect that will instigate vital changes in our food system across the globe.

We passionately discuss the lack of government intervention to prevent junk food advertising to our children. We talk about how people are fed up with living in a food ‘swamp’ / junk food world and want change, given our children are now predicted to have a lower life expectancy than their parents as a result of the food system messing with our evolutionary feedback loops that govern our behaviour.

We also discuss the importance of giving our children the tools to survive in the food swamp, starting with creating a safe environment inside the home, helping our children to learn how to cook food from scratch, as well as different steps you can take as a parent to make food healthy and fun.

I absolutely loved this episode as we had so much to discuss on the importance of addressing the food system through a system-centric approach, whether the system is you personally, the food industry, or the entire ecosystem in which we live – our planet, that we are dependent upon to survive. Dr. Sally Moorcroft joins Dr. Ruth Allan on Episode 070 of her show ‘Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain.’

Dr. Sally Moorcroft is an award-winning integrative and functional medicine doctor. She has special interests in women’s health, psychology, and the gut microbiome, particularly menopause, perimenopause, PCOS, and endometriosis.

She writes for national publications and lectures and teaches nationally on integrative and functional medicine. She is co-founder of the Northern Centre of Integrative and Functional Medicine (NCIFM), Lincolnshire; Chapel Yard Organics in Holt, Norfolk and Dr. Sally’s Botanicals Herbal Teas and Tonics.

In this episode, we discuss female health and the brain, how to master menopause and address the symptoms you may be experiencing. We discuss the importance of choosing a practitioner with a comprehensive toolbox to tailor their approach to you rather than just using a hammer to help you when a chisel is best.

Dr. Sally discusses the critical signs that you are going into perimenopause and menopause and what factors we can influence to minimize the hormonal rollercoaster, including your stress levels, weight, diet, and gut health, which can lead to emotional symptoms and worsening brain health. She talks about the symptoms experienced as our hormonal levels rise and fall and what you can do to reduce the symptoms you are experiencing.

We discuss the impact on the adrenal glands and Hypothalamic-Pituatary-Adrenal (HPA) axis when your stress levels are consistently too high, which can lead to a reduction in the hormones DHEA and oestrogen, resulting in a reduction in brain function when oestrogen is low. She dives into polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), often called the diabetes of the ovaries due to insulin sensitivity, what causes the symptoms you can experience, and what you can do about it, including supplements you can use.

I absolutely loved this episode as we had so much to share about helping women manage their female hormonal fluctuations with simple, actionable steps you can take today to manage better any hormonal rollercoaster you are on.

Liz McConaghy joins Dr Ruth Allan on Episode 066 of her show ‘Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain’

Liz, an Ex RAF Chinook Crewman, served 17 years and completed 2 deployments to Iraq and 10 to Afghanistan. She suffered from PTSD and, in 2020, tried to end her life.

She recently released her book ‘Chinook Crew Chick: The Highs and Lows of Forces Life from the Longest Serving Female RAF Chinook Force Crew Member’ to try and help others with Mental Health struggles.

During her deployments, she survived not only a near-fatal wire strike onboard her CH47 but numerous enemy fire contacts’ defending her crew by returning fire from both the M134 Minigun’ and M60 weapons entrusted to her to operate.

Her most significant honour of all her duties, however, was serving on the Medical Emergency Response Team, or MERT – more commonly known as the flying ambulance. This involved recovering wounded soldiers from the battlefield, often under fire, and witnessing them both die and, indeed come back to life at her feet in the cabin of her Chinook.

In this episode, Liz openly shares the highs and lows that she experienced during her service and what she learned from trying to take her own life following the lockdown, and how she is using her story to provide hope to others.

Liz discusses the impact of losing the network of people essential to her, how lockdown isolation restricted her exercise routine, resulting in a change of behaviours and eating habits that quickly spiralled downwards. She shares the impact of the domino effect on her mental health and how her constant drive not to be a burden to others led to her seeking a terminal way out to end her pain

📎 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨:

Katyna Rosario, MD is a child and adolescent, and adult psychiatrist based at the Amen Clinics in their new Amen Clinic in Miami, Florida. She sees children, teens, and adults, and treats a wide range of mental health diagnoses. Dr Rosario is completely bilingual in Spanish and English and works with patients who speak either language.

Her published research includes adolescent mental health in Latino communities and the impact of internet addiction and the use of psychiatric services in this population, as well as the beneficial influence clowning, has on the mental health of children. Of note, Dr Rosario is also a professional clown!

Dr. Rosario’s expertise includes treating children and adolescent patients who have autism spectrum disorder. She integrates a wide array of resources for patients - either at our practice or within their communities to further support them in reaching their goals

In this episode, Dr Rosario talks about the importance of keeping childhood alive. She discusses what inspired her to become a psychiatrist and the shift she noticed when she had the opportunity to scan her patient’s brains - in particular, to speed at which she is able to help her clients get better

She discusses trauma in children and the patterns that show up on functional brain scans, as well as what sports can help, or hurt your child’s brain. She shares her unique therapeutic approach to supporting children with autism to improve their brains, as well as the impact that the pandemic had on her brain function, and how this has made her more empathic to her patients

I loved talking with Dr Katyna - it was great to speak with a professional who was both humble and connected to the importance of fun, positive childhood experiences and how we can really empower our children to have better brains and better lives

If you have a child that is struggling with their brain function and traditional routes have failed, this is one episode you don’t want to miss!

📎 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨:

Gavin is a born entrepreneur with a passion for startup and scale-up. He has over 25 years of real estate experience in investment and development.

Over the years Gavin has discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see, the number of awoken minds is very few in reality

Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public

Like most of us, Gavin has had many ups and downs. He wants to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally! Gavin aims to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. He intends to inspire by education, not by regulation

In this Episode, Gavin talks about the pivotal moments in his life that lead to him undertaking deep work on his mindset to live a life of conscious action rather than a life of subconscious reaction

We discuss our belief systems and the importance of removing the seed of limiting beliefs that drive our behaviour, as well as investigating the root cause of trauma, particularly to support people with depression

Gavin discusses how he broke a common addiction that allowed him to shift from an oscillating mindset to a much calmer one - by changing one simple thing

He discusses what it means to be an inspirational leader and how to be one and what one thing you can do to stay outstanding "When you are living your purpose, your passion and are consciously making decisions that are changing your life, there will be a lot of light shining out of your heart." Lynn Whitbeck is the Queen of Sales. Business Owners and entrepreneurs hire Lynn to ignite winning sales teams because most are chasing down clients, stuck in a chaotic sales cycle, and lacking client retention, conversions, and profits. So, she helps transform thinking to the client’s perspective, ending sales chaos with a robust strategic plan to harvest the hidden profits.

In this Episode, Lynn talks about how to unchain your pain in the context of sales and how effective sales is through connection with the client - connection being one of the five pillars of brain health.

We discuss the difference between adults and children in the context of sales, and how as we get older, we can develop a fixed mindset and hold ourselves back from building strong relationships.

Lynn also talks about the importance of a pause. Of reading body language and learning from your mistakes. She discusses the pitfalls of making effective sales, and how to flip the switch to create more of an impact for your client and start a ripple effect.

She also shares her personal story of how it’s important to understand that you get to choose what you do to support you on your journey through life, and how to transition from your comfort zone to your growth zone. "Sometimes you have to journey the long way around to travel the short distance." Books and references discussed in this Episode: Simon Sinek - Robert Pardi

Violet Detre is a Happiness Advocate, speaker, best-selling coauthor of ‘Ready, Set, Go!’ with Brian Tracy and host of The SuccessPath Show on YouTube

Violet became a Christian at eight years old but was stunted by health issues, unfortunate circumstances and life’s challenges. Through her journey of recovery, she learned that it was possible to not just survive the day-to-day, but to achieve personal fulfilment and thrive!

Violet holds a Professional and Executive Master’s Coaching Certificate through an International Coach Federation (ICF) approved university and a bachelor’s degree in Education and Life Coaching from Liberty University where she studied Life, Health & Wellness, Financial, Marriage and Leadership Coaching.

In this episode, Violet shares her story of how she struggled with severe depression and multiple suicide attempts, wondering if lasting joy and peace were truly attainable

At five years old Violet was molested by a family member, resulting in a cascade of health issues as a result of being unable to talk about what happened. Mercury poisoning from fillings in her teeth also led to brain fog, which continued to deteriorate after she finished school

After losing her grandfather, she spiralled downwards and completely lost hope - she was found by her husband after taking a cocktail of medication and revived in the hospital.

That wasn’t the first time Violet attempted suicide

Violet discusses the difficulty of her journey from being suicidal to the Happiness Advocate she is today, and how she pulled herself out of the darkness, found joy, hope and rediscovered her faith and relationship with God

If you are struggling with finding joy, feel like you’re losing hope or are having suicidal thoughts, this episode is for you

You are enough and guidance and support is here to unchain your pain.

Terry Boyle McDougall is an Executive & Career Coach and CEO of Terry B. McDougall Coaching. She helps high-achieving professionals remove obstacles that keep them stuck so they can enjoy more success and satisfaction in their lives and careers. Before becoming a coach, Terry was a long-time corporate marketing executive where she led teams, developed strategies and advised senior leaders to drive business results.

She is the author of ‘Winning the Game of Work: Career Happiness and Success on Your Own Terms’ and host of the Marketing Mambo podcast. Born to very young parents with a mother that turned 17 two months after she was born, by the time she was 11 years old she had moved 41 times, which resulted in a lot of disruption in her life, and the need to be self-sufficient.

When she herself became a mother to her second son she reached out for support to address her internal belief systems after putting too much pressure on herself as a mum, trying to be a perfectionist. In this episode, Terry talks about the difference between professional success and personal happiness, what can lead to stress and burnout, the importance of the mirror test and taking the time to invest in yourself and valuing your own worth. ‘"What’s success if you really don’t have the time or energy to enjoy it?" This episode is particularly relatable for me as a mum. Sometimes you just need to acknowledge that you have spent nine months of intense energy physically and mentally creating a beautiful human being. It’s ok to be tired out, emotionally drained and not feeling like you can ‘do everything’ after giving birth.

Robert Pardi joins @drruth on the 36th Episode of Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain and the 16th episode in series 2.

Following his wife’s death, Robert re-assessed his life and decided to share the many lessons he learned by becoming a Certified Life Coach, Keynote Speaker and most recently Author. He pursued a childhood dream to live in Italy and now lives in the same small Italian village his great grandfather immigrated from.

Robert is the author of ‘Chasing Life,’ ‘A Pimby Tale,’ and ‘Possibility in Action’ out from 18 May 22. Robert didn’t grow up in an ideal environment, living with an alcoholic and abusive father. Meeting his wife, Desiree, at the age of 19, he went on an incredible journey watching her evolve as she realised her life’s dreams of becoming a Palliative Care Medical Director, whilst he was her full-time caregiver as she battled cancer for 11 years.

Robert talks about how important our imagination is, and how it can be diminished or buried as we become adults. He discusses how his experience with Desiree affirmed the importance of pursuing your dreams and living ‘all in.’ Robert discusses the challenges of grief, not only from the loss of a loved one but the grief you can experience as you also lose the identity that you had as a caregiver. This for me was a bit of a tear-jerker. Robert’s book ‘Chasing Life’ about his journey with his wife Desiree, is absolutely beautiful. Barbara is the Founder of Discover Next Step, a consulting and coaching company. In her workshops, retreats and 1:1 coaching, she combines personal growth, leadership and brain-based techniques to help her clients get more clarity on their next bold steps.

She is the author of ‘Permission To Be BOLD: A Guide to Loving Yourself, Living Fully and Leaving Your Mark In The World.’

Barbara is also the program director for the Brain Health Licensed Trainer Course at Amen University, supporting a community of brain health trainers that bring resiliency and wellness programs into their communities.

In this episode, Barbara shares her story of how her childhood experiences shaped how she was able to connect with the world and those around her.

She discusses how her fears and withdrawal were centred around her family dynamics - how she had to play quietly or outside to protect herself. She discusses how she became self-mute in moments of terror and fear.

This started at around 4 years old.

Never a rule-breaker, she experienced a series of incidents in childhood that started a path of debilitating fear, withdrawing and not allowing her true self to come out.

Throughout school, her anxiety and fear continued to grow, with her shame and humiliation compounding through the years.

After experiencing undiagnosed brain injury following breaking her back, Barbara had to readjust her objectives, taking 12 years to accomplish her Bachelor's degree.

When she was finally able to get a functional brain scan, she learned her brain type, understood how her brain functioned and was able to get the appropriate treatment to heal from her brain trauma and unleash her superpower. “Change starts with me.”

He is the co-author with Elaine Dundon of the international bestselling book, "Prisoners of Our Thoughts" (3rd edition, 23+ languages), which is based on the wisdom of the world-renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, Dr Viktor E. Frankl (author of the classic bestseller "Man's Search for Meaning") who personally urged Dr Pattakos to write it.

He and Elaine also co-authored the award-winning book on the human quest for meaning "The OPA! Way," which is grounded in Greek philosophy, mythology, and culture and backed by years of meaning research.

He is a regular contributor to Psychology Today, and an Honorary Professor at the Moscow Institute of Psychoanalysis, Moscow, Russia. He is also a U.S. Army veteran, and so Dr Pattakos understands the challenges facing people in today's uncertain times.

In this episode, we talk about the importance of spiritual wellbeing to optimise your brain and whole-body health, in particular finding meaning and purpose in your life.

Dr Alex explains what optimal brain health is for him personally in the context of being a prisoner of our thoughts.

We discuss the difference between meaning and purpose and explore how you can find meaning in everything that you do, with Dr Ruth sharing some of her personal stories around this topic.

Dr Alex shares how he was able to help psychiatric patients enjoy life and he discusses how you can use the OPA framework - seeking Opportunities, helping others find Purpose and embracing life with Attitude, to help unchain your spiritual pain. “We are being challenged by life and it is up to us to make it meaningful,” Dr Alex Pattakos. His background includes being a former therapist and mental health administrator, political campaign organiser, community/economic development policy planner, and full-time professor of public and business administration (including graduate program head).

He has worked closely with the White House under three presidents in the USA on social and economic policy matters and served as an adviser to the Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

He was also one of the initial faculty evaluators for the Innovations in American Government Awards Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

He is a past president of Renaissance Business Associates (RBA), an international, nonprofit association of people committed to elevating the human spirit in the workplace. During his tenure as president, RBA was active in Australia, Canada, Europe, Nigeria, South Africa, and the USA.

Through his public speaking, work with Fortune 500 companies, governments, nonprofit organisations, and university teaching, he has helped people at all levels build their capacities for personal and organisational transformation with a focus on an authentic commitment to meaningful value and goals that make a positive difference in the world.

On the 22nd Episode of Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain and third in the second series, Dr. Ruth Allan does a LIVE exclusive to support all those struggling with the psychological trauma of war.

If you would like to let us know what you thought of this conversation, please feel free, we welcome any feedback and love to share with all the special guests that we have on the show ➥ TEXT +1 843-396-2104 (US/Canada)

During this show, Dr. Ruth provides an overview of how psychological trauma manifests in the context of war and fear, how the brain responds to psychological trauma, what you can do as a family to avoid the trauma tree from growing, as well as further support to help your family unchain your pain.

Trauma is like a tree, so the earlier the seed is planted, the taller the tree can grow inside your mind. Much like physical trauma, the earlier you can intervene with an appropriate healing approach, the earlier you can address the trauma and prevent it from growing inside your mind.

In the context of the trauma of war, the more you are able to discharge the trauma you experience each day when you feel in a ‘safer’ time or space, the more you are able to down-regulate your brain each day to be able to cope with the ongoing trauma.

Rex Miller helps leaders and teams release their genius potential. In this episode, we discuss Rex and his family’s journey to optimizing their brain health.

He discusses how his research into the issues associated with the education system helped him uncover where the system had damaged his children and the difficulty in challenging the current, traditional medical system.

Taking his family to get their brains scanned whilst they were on vacation in California, he was able to prove what he intuitively knew was wrong about the diagnosis of his daughter’s brain health struggles.

Helping to uncover the root cause of his daughter’s struggles, which lay in the bullying she experienced at school, Rex talks about her journey to healing, including removing the incorrect label she assigned to herself following the misdiagnosis.

If you would like to let us know what you thought of this conversation, please feel free, we welcome any feedback and love to share with all the special guests that we have on the show ➥ TEXT +1 843-396-2104 (US/Canada)

Mike McCarthy is an award-winning journalist who has worked in the news media as a reporter and presenter for almost forty years.

Having worked for the BBC and Sky News he covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and a huge variety of other stories across the world including politics from Washington DC, the Boston marathon bombing in the US, and a terrorist attack on the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa.

Mike worked for more than ten years as the North of England bureau chief for Sky News, covering stories ranging across all subjects including crime, politics, and sport. Major events covered also include rioting in Athens, the Manchester Arena bombing, and the Hillsborough disaster.

His interviewees have included stars such as Muhammad Ali and most British prime ministers over the past four decades. He has worked in print, radio, and television in the fields of production, reporting, documentary making, and presenting.

In this show, we discuss the topic of suicide.

Mike McCarthy lost his son Ross to suicide in February 2021 and shares his personal story of what happened, what is wrong with the system, and steps he is taking to create a step-change in the way mental health is discussed and treated.

Despite having depression for 10 years and attempted suicide the previous year, Mike discusses how his son Ross was put on a six-month waiting list for treatment.

The mental health care system is in itself in a crisis and more needs to be done at all levels to raise awareness, from media to government, to support groups, professional services, and healthcare organisations.

This is a very personal discussion for Dr. Ruth, who is the second generation of a family member who was lost to suicide - Ruth’s mum’s father Francis when her mum was only six years old.

This show is for all individuals struggling with mental health issues or affected by suicide, from partners, to parents, to siblings, to the children like Charlie, Ross’s son. We are here to support you in unchaining your pain.

Dr. Philip Alexander joins Dr. Ruth Allan on the 16th Episode of Brain Health: Unchaining Your Pain.

If you would like to let us know what you thought of this conversation, please feel free, we welcome any feedback and love to share with all the special guests that we have on the show ➥ TEXT +1 843-396-2104 (US/Canada)

Dr. Philip Alexander is a practising medical doctor and pediatrician. Having suffered childhood trauma from a very young age, Dr Philip used the study as his primary escape mechanism from the destructive culture he grew up in, leaving home at 16 years old.

Despite achieving glowing reviews as a paediatrician, Dr. Philip’s empathic nature, driven from his deep-rooted desire to treat others appropriately, became a double-edged sword.

Starting his training as a doctor in the 1990s at a time when there was little mental health support, the cultural stressors during training to become a consultant paediatrician, coupled with unaddressed childhood trauma, leading to burnout and in 2013/14 he was diagnosed with depression.

Despite being in the NHS healthcare system it took two years for Dr. Philip to receive Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). This became a turning point for him on his journey to recovery. With the right therapist, he was able to open up and describe how he was feeling. Continuing therapy weekly until 2019, combined with coaching that has been super-charging his recovery, he has recently 2021 started his return to work.

During this episode, we talk about the shocking statistics reported by the British Medical Association that 75% of medical professionals have some form of mental health struggle and don’t disclose it.

We discuss the cultural stigma in the medical profession by talking about mental health struggles and how adverse childhood experiences can manifest later in life. We talk about what some of the warning signs are that we often don’t pay attention to, and what key changes are necessary now to support medical professionals struggling with their brain health.

Working in Fortune 100 companies, Suzanne has helped to develop emerging leaders and teams to meet best practices, excel company expectations, and reach new heights.

Suzanne is author of the #1 International Bestseller “Lead From The Top: How to make your life, your team, and your leadership a grand adventure.”

We apologize for the slightly wonky recording in the first two minutes of this Episode. During this time, Suzanne mentions that only 350 individuals have reached the summit of Everest and we mention that she was the 177th to achieve the Grand Slam in 2006.

In this episode, we take a very different look at what optimal brain health is, in the context of achieving your goals, viewed through the lens of extreme adventure.

During this episode, Suzanne and Dr. Ruth dive deep into what her challenges were in becoming the 177th person to accomplish the Explorer’s Grand Slam, and ultimately what Suzanne’s real Everest was…

In this episode, we talk about how a combination of Chris' unresolved childhood trauma due to an emotionally destructive relationship with his father, combined with the stress of his job, resulted in him having his first major mental breakdown in 1996 after collapsing in the gym.

After being told by the doctor, 'there's nothing wrong with you,' the realization that his struggles were not physical but mental put him into a deep depression.

At the time, the narrative at work was that 'Chris is overdoing it and needs to recharge his batteries.' The reality was very different as his specialist at the time described his mental breakdown as the equivalent of having a major heart attack

During the discussion, Chris praises the support offered by his firm and talks about the key steps they took to allow him to recover at his own pace without judgment.

In 2018 Chris completed an intensive program in Psychotherapy at Regent's University in London.

Chris' passion now is mental health and wellbeing, and he is now a Trustee of MQ Mental Health

Having suffered from severe mental health issues himself, Chris is very aware of the stigma that surrounds the topic. He aims to reduce this stigma so that mental ill-health is treated the same as physical ill-health.

In this episode, Keith talks about his traumatic childhood with a mother who had periodic psychotic episodes including hospitalization in an era where mental health was not talked about.

We speak about what led to her eating disorder as a teenager, how life changes manifested in a deep depression, and how she found her way out of the darkness.

When his father died at 12, it fell on Keith to support his mother, who became incredibly fragile, as well as his siblings. Both matters were not discussed, making it difficult for him to express and release his emotions.

A traumatic event whilst working in the corporate world, coupled with the response of the company to his situation, led him into a very isolated place and subsequent depression, which triggered the start of his healing journey from his childhood experiences.

In this episode, Keith talks about the impact of COVID on our mental health and the importance of not just treating our way out of a crisis, but communicating and talking to aid recovery.

Nazia uses neuroscience and fitness to help females to become the best version of themselves by recreating and rewiring negative habits. She teaches people from all backgrounds the gift of self-love and how to use fitness to manage emotions better.

We speak about what led to her eating disorder as a teenager, how life changes manifested in a deep depression, and how she found her way out of the darkness.

From an early age, Nazia felt as if she needed to conform to the stereotype of being born into a narrative of going to school, getting a job, and getting married as an Asian, Bangladeshi Muslim woman.

Inspired by an interview she had with Mohammed Ali’s daughter, Layla Ali, as a child Nazia turned to boxing to help provide resilience, structure, and discipline, and found it a helpful outlet to channel her anger and aggression.

Nazia provides an open and honest perspective of her brain health struggles and the deep work she knew she needed to do to take back control of her mindset.

Charlie is a successful entrepreneur who after a 30-year career in commercial real estate, turned his attention to personal development and mental performance.

He is a survivor of violent childhood trauma and overcame a 20-year substance abuse issue with a passion for helping people find fulfillment in their lives.

He opened a supportive living home for executives struggling with substance abuse and is the host of the podcast Overcome Outloud, in addition to training companies and Athletes in the skills of mental performance.

In this episode Charlie talks about what optimal brain health means for him now - his mind to be aware of the external things happening to him and be able to deal with them in a healthy way.

At the age of six, he suffered his first closed fist punch, which carried on until age 19. This made it difficult to see anything in life other than through a trauma lens, spending his childhood surviving each day.

He discusses how a conversation with his mum became a turning point for him in his life, resulting in a complete shift in his educational performance from special education to making the honor roll, and providing him with a way out.

He goes into detail about the importance of taking the pen back to write the story of your life, using the weapon of your mind for you rather than against you.

He talks about the three P’s of advice he would give to the 12-year-old self that would have helped him through the darker days, where motivation comes from, and what mental performance constitutes.

There is so much phenomenal advice in this episode, whether you’re an adult who has been through abuse, someone currently struggling with addiction, to teachers and carers dealing with children with learning difficulties that may be a result of trauma.

This is one episode that you don’t want to miss.
