You’re definitely going to want to check out the new release from LaMP entitled One of Us out now wherever you listen or buy music. For the uninitiated LaMP features drummer Scott Lawton and keyboard player Ray Paczkowski famously of the Trey Anastasio Band and guitarist Scott Mezger who has been toiling with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead amongst other side projects. Together, the trio puts out very cool jams that play off of their improvisation chops and decades of playing a range of music styles. While the tunes all start out with a groove Russ Lawton provides, they grow organically as the other two musicians colour in with their instruments over top. Together the trio amass tunes that are eclectic yet very much recognizable as LaMP tunes. I caught up with Russ Lawton to talk about where things are at with LaMP and of course we discussed the very compact yet thorough One of Us an album worth getting into your ears soon. That last few years of the 35 years moe. has been together haven’t been the easiest for the band. First there was bassist Rob Derhack’s cancer diagnosis which thankfully is in remission, guitarist Chuck Garvey’s stroke which he has almost totally recovered from and the untimely passing of Rob’s son. All of these setbacks could have easily crushed the collective spirit of the band and no doubt led to a hiatus or a full fledged breakup. Luckily, the band and its member’s found the courage to sojourn on each supporting one another as all tight knit families would. That in itself is quite the feat, but moe. has also channeled all that experience into a new album, Circle of Giants out now wherever you get music. In my opinion it’s one of their best studio records in a long time. I caught up with guitarist Al Schnier last week who was on tour with the band in Southern California. The conversation started when I asked Al how he took the news of Rob’s Derhak’a diagnosis and how he ultimately coped with it.

Connecticut based quartet Eggy recently released their sophomore record Waiting Game. As you’ll soon hear the process for this album was different than records and EPs of the past. The band who recruited White Denim guitarist James Petralli to produce the record purposefully wrote fresh material for the album that they didn’t play live until more recently. They also decided to let drummer Alex Bailey handle all the lead vocals on the record. What emerged from the sessions and ultimately became Waiting Game is a fresh record filled with poppy hooks, impressive production and yes the harmonies and musicianship we’ve come to expect from Eggy. I recently had the chance to catch up with Alex Bailey and Dani Battat to talk about the process of making Waiting Game, the songs themselves and as per usual much more.

While Jerry Garcia collaborated with dozens of artists beyond fronting the Grateful Dead and The Jerry Garcia Band, few are as recognizable in name as David “Dawg” Grisman. As you’ll soon hear, their relationship was initially happenstance but as time wore on, it was inevitable that these two geniuses would meet and collaborate in both live and studio settings. David Grisman, roots music guru, multi-instrumentalist who is probably most famous for his masterful mandolin playing has released a series of “bare bone” acoustic Garcia and Grisman recordings dubbed Bare Bones. Two of these volumes have already released, the first on Jerry Garcia’s 82nd birthday just a few weeks back. A third will be released August 30th by Acoustic Disc.

Last week, roots reggae musician Matisyahu dropped theHold the Fire Acoustic EP and yes as the name suggests these are stripped down acoustic versions of the songs on the EP by the same name. This acoustic EP also features collaborator Adam Weinberg. A very poetic and poignant song for the times we’re living in. Matisyahu’s touring woes and the blatant anti-semitism he faces on tour have been well documented here and elsewhere, but true to his craft and his supportive community he sojourns on. I caught up with Matisyahu and Adam Weinberg to talk about the inspiration behind releasing acoustic music, what’s next in for Matisyahu and I even asked collaborator Adam Weinberg the status of his solo material.

Little Feat’s story is one of longevity, an incredible catalogue of tunes, and excellent musicianship. The latest incarnation of the band, might be the closest we’ve heard since the band was formed back in 1969 by Lowell George, Billy Payne, Richie Hayward and Roy Estrada. The current line up is on tour most of the spring well into the summer, and they’re releasing an album full of blues covers and a few originals entitled Sam’s Place featuring percussionist turned vocalist Sam Clayton May 17th. I got up with keyboardist Billy Payne and current guitar player and friend of the show Scott Sharrard to get the lowdown on all things Feat.

Amongst the jam bands that seem like they are always on the road are The Kitchen Dwellers. The Montana based quartet are part bluegrass or even jamgrass and part psychedelia. Their unique sound and that constant touring ethos has created quite a story to unpack. On October 7th Israel was hit with the deadliest terror attack in its short history . By now the events of that day and the subsequent war between Israel and Hamas the current leadership of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip has been well documented. On October 11th just days after the attack Americana band Nefesh Mountain released a re-worked version of their song The Narrow Bridge which references the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, which were also being illuminated by many Israel’s and Jews subsequent to the attack. The Narrow Bridge is just one of 7 tunes on the band’s forthcoming release, The Cabin Sessions EP. Gov’t Mule’s twelfth record, Peace Like a River is somewhat of a departure from previous records. Perhaps it was being cooped up during COVID or the fact that the band got their blues out on last years Heavy Load Blues, but this one hits different. I first heard about the Krasno/Moore project featuring guitarist Eric Krasno and drummer Stanton Moore a few months ago when I was talking to Kras about King Canyon. This project is an organ trio that also includes keyboard player Eric Finland. While Kras and Stanton have played together and collaborated live, up until now they’ve never recorded together.
Their forthcoming record Book of Queens out March 17th, is filled with contemporary covers and classic tunes original created by well known female singers. The Krasno/Moore project re-invents these tunes for their trio, and the results are impressive. I had the chance to catch up with Stanton Moore a few weeks ago before the trip made their first few live dates in this configuration.

The Bay Area music collective Moon Alice has been around for a few years now, in different configurations currently includes vocalist Lester Chambers, Pete Sears on bass a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead and U2 advisor Roger McNamee on guitar, Barry Sless on lead guitar and pedal steel, Jason Crosby and Mookie Segal on keyboards, John Molo on drums. Lester Chambers’ son Dylan and Erika, Rachel and Chloe Tietjen of the T Sisters round out the bands vocals. That’s quite a group of musicians with a ton of talent.

Over the years, I’ve mentioned the Mother Hips several times on this podcast and we’ve had both principle songwriters Tim Bluhm and Greg Loaicono on this show. The band, who have roots in Northern California, have been at their craft for some 30 years now, and When We Disappear marks their 12th album to date. While the Mother Hips aren’t a typical jam band, they are an incredible live act, and definitely intersect with the jam band community from time to time. As you already know, Krasno is a renowned guitar player, producer, and songwriter. He is best known as the guitarist and founding member of the band, Soulive and of the funk outfit Lettuce. Earlier this week to the delight of Spaffnerds everywhere, Spafford released the 8 track EP Simple Mysteries. Nobody saw the release coming, though the band did tease on social media that something was brewing. Luckily enough for us, the surprise was indeed Simple Mysteries. The 8 songs on the EP can be divided up into 2 groups; songs that the band have been playing for years and brand news songs, that only recently have been showing up in setlists. It’s been a minute since we last heard new music from Trampled by Turtles. In fact you have to go back to 2018’s Life is Good on the Open Road which seems like a life time ago, for their last record. For the uninitiated, Ghost Light is a pseudo all-star band made up of frontman Tom Hamilton Jr., Holly Bowling, Scotty Zwang and Raina Mullen and Taylor Shell. The band’s sophomore album was recorded at The Ballroom, Hamilton Jr.‘s own studio in North Philly. As you’ll soon hear, this album’s creation was important for the band as it continues to mature, now just about 4 years in existence. I caught up with friend of the show, Tom Hamilton Jr. to talk about the album, his other project JRAD, and our sports team rivalries.

I couldn’t make it to Peach Festival this year, but the crew of people who I knew that did, were raving about a young guy who played the guitar like a man possessed and served up a large heaping plate of cosmic country goodness. They of course were referring to the captivating Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. When you first hear Daniel’s voice, it’s a throw back to the days of country crooners before him, and his playing style is that of a demon, with odes to country, honky tonk, bluegrass and good ole rock n’ roll. After hearing both his studio work I dug in to some of the live stuff available at nugs.net and was blown away. How can it be, that such a young man, be such a force, and be able to create such a mesmerizing sonic pulse. Well, we caught up with the purveyor of cosmic country, to get the skinny and more. March 3, 1993 at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, Ilinois, may go down as one of the most important dates in modern Jam Band history.
The Grateful Dead performed that night in the Windy City and said venue and noted promoter, club owner, philanthropist, activist and raconteur Peter Shapiro was in attendance, at the first Dead show he ever attended.
He recently published a memoir of his life’s work to date in a must read book “The Music Never Stops…” co-penned by Dean Budnick the editor at Relix Magazine.
I’ve always been intrigued by Peter Shapiro’s efforts to bring quality music to live audiences. Up until recently I’ve had a very general periphery idea of his accomplishments, but after reading his book, I needed to know more, directly from Peter himself…

There is something magical brewing in the state of Colorado, and much of it has to do with the emergence of the Magic Beans. We’ve featured their music before, but with the release of their latest record Unzipped, I’d like to suggest that this band has organically determined a fresh way to make music, that unbelievably isn’t that fresh at all. For Unzipped the band shed much of what they’ve done in the past to create music, and instead opted for a very lo-fi, analog approach. The results of those efforts are 10 wonderfully eclectic instrumentals that stay true to the Magic Beans sound while offering up more, by doing less. After almost 25 years of putting out records and touring, everything came to a halt for the dudes in Umphrey’s McGee in March 2020 with the pandemic crushing tour plans. That didn’t stop them from putting out live streamed shows and a handful of drive in shows. They also managed to continue recording songs for a new album, which you’ll get to hear in its entirety next week.

Asking for a Friend may in fact maybe my favorite Umphrey’s McGee album to date. It’s filled with great lyrics, awesome hooks and harmonies, and truly great production. I can’t wait to hear all of these tunes live.

When you’re a master craftsman, as Marco Benevento is, and have a wealth of tools at your disposal, as is also the case with Marco’s extensive inventory of many different types of keyboards and synths, creating on a whim, brilliant works of art, is merely an exercise in timing and availability. With the world seemingly shut down Marco indeed had the time, retreating back to his lair, his home studio, he wanted to create something entirely on his own, a masterwork of sorts, which displayed his wide influence, but also could boil down into something uniquely Benevento. With the first volume of those efforts complete and out now, I decided it would be a good time to catch up with Marco, and chat about this new album, family and more.

One of our favorite female singer songwriters, Nicki Bluhm will be releasing Avondale Drive in early June on Compass Records. This is, Nicki’s second solo record, a follow up to her 2018 record To Rise You Gotta Fall. Nicki has been a mainstay in the jam band adjacent communities for years, and I’ve been a fan since her awesome van sessions that she did with her old band The Gramblers. Now this native Californian makes her home in Nashville, and Avondale Drive marks a new chapter in Bluhm’s life. We sat down to talk about the new record, but first I admittedly gushed about her performance of the Grateful Dead’s Sunrise with Phil Lesh and Bob Weir back at Lockin’ 2017.

It’s incredibly difficult to describe the awesome music Dopapod makes. Is it rock, funk, progressive rock? I honestly have no clue anymore and the forthcoming self titled release the band’s 7th is a pot pourri of sonic goodness. This new album due out a May 27th has been in the works for a while now, probably dating back to when the band came off their self imposed layoff that ended in late April of 2019. Needless to say, the COVID pandemic created another break but at that point the band was already well versed on being apart and off the road. So when I caught up with Rob Compa, the band’s guitar player we had a lot to talk about including the band’s really great new album.

The pandemic was no doubt a tough time for everyone. Being huddled in your home, away from socializing, going out with friends, or even attending shows. A glimmer of hope though for many was the absolutely awesome Phish covers fingerstyle guitarist Adam Weinberg and his daughter performed for us on social media. That's where I first came across Adam, and indeed learned that he was a talented musician in his own right, having put out solo instrumental records, and touring as Matisyahu's accompaniment for many acoustic shows. I reached out to Adam to thank him for the absolutely wonderful Phish covers. He immediately let me know that he was working on a solo record and wondered if I would be interested in talking to him about the project closer to release. Well, some months later, and a few weeks before the release of Laugh, Cry, Grief, Hope, due out May 13th, I did indeed catch up with Adam and we talked about his album, his struggles with mental illness, and our mutual love of Phish.

I can't think of better ambassadors for the state of Montana, at least musically then the Kitchen Dwellers. Their very old school blend of bluegrass combined with effects and crazy covers has always had me thinking that this was a cool band. Their third album, Wise River is a tribute to a Montana river that runs in the Southwestern region of the state and empties into Big Hole River. While they make Bozeman Montana home, about two hours away from Wise River, it's clear that the Kitchen Dwellers sonic palette is matched only by the picturesque sites of their home state. I caught up with guitarist and vocalist Max Davies to talk about the forthcoming record, working with producer Cory Wong, and much more, including getting a sense of how they choose the covers that they add to their ever evolving sets.

Entering their third decade now, Railroad Earth have solidified their position in the jam world as a Bluegrass tinged Americana outfit. With their notoriety and hustle, also sadly came change in 2018 with the passing of founding member Andy Goessling. Even during the pandemic Spafford managed to play some dates including one of the first drive-in shows, but aside from a recent fall tour, for the most part things have been relatively quiet for the boys. If there is a silver lining to what has been a very difficult couple of years during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s likely all the great music that’s been made by some of our favorite musicians and bands. In fact, some bands like the Infamous Stringdusters took that concept to the extreme, with each member contributing a solo project and album. Christone “Kingfish” Ingram isn’t just another blues guitar prodigy. Earlier this year, Dead & Company drummer Bill Kreutzmann had to bow out of the band's performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Filling the kit so to speak was noted and accomplished drummer Jay Lane.

So just who is Jay Lane. Well, to start with, the San Francisco native has been drumming since the tender age of nine while attending the Blue Bear School of Music in San Francisco. Since then, he has gone on to great acclaim performing first with several local now defunct bands, but then with the likes of Les Claypool, Charlie Hunter and now Bob Weir. In fact, one could argue he is Bob Weir's preferred drummer, since he has not only performed in Bob Weir's Ratdog, but also Further, Wolf Bros., and an occasional stint in Dead & Company.

Last year, on Christmas Day 2020, we lost the great Tony Rice. He was an influential acoustic guitar player not just for the bluegrass community but for the folk and acoustic jazz worlds as well. He was undoubtedly one of the best acoustic players at his peak, and likely since. His credits are too numerous to mention here, but some career highlights include playing in the Bluegrass Alliance, the New South and collaborations with Ricky Skaggs, David Grisman Bela Fleck and Jerry Garcia to name a few.

Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist, Barry Waldrep a student of Rice’s playing and one of the Bluegrass community’s current veterans has been working on a tribute to Tony Rice with other musicians over the course of the past year, and will release Barry Waldrep and Friends Celebrate Tony Rice on December 24th a record he plays on, produced and has poured tons of love into. The album is full of a who’s who of the bluegrass, folk and Americana communities, and includes collaborations with Jim Lauderdale, Larry Campbell, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes amongst others. It was my great pleasure to catch up with Barry to talk about Tony, the forthcoming compilation and much more.

Admittedly, I’ve gotten to the Jake Shimabukuro story a little late. For those unaware, Jake is the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele. That is to say, many play his instrument, but few have the skill, dexterity and finger strength to carry off equally incredible playing of such a small instrument. This prowess is evident in the company he keeps, the career he’s had and the continued touring and music he’s making. His latest effort, a few years in the making, is a compilation of terrific tunes and collaborations. Many of the artists featured on Jake & Friends are mutual friends, so I was glad to have the opportunity to chat with such an incredible musician and as you’ll hear, a great person.

If you know Winnipeg, Manitoba, the thought of that city producing an instrumental psychedelic jazz infused rock band is pretty crazy. Located in central Canada, Winnipeg is generally known for two things; cold winters and buggy summers. It was where Neil Young got his start and where The Guess Who began their iconic careers but those are rock artists, not Psychadelic Jam Bands. So when I heard that ostensibly a Jam Band born out of the tundra of Winnipeg were releasing their third EP A Relationship of Force on Color Red November 26th, obviously I to reach out to get the low down on the band and their music. Fortunately frontman and guitar player Ed Durocher and drummer Glenn Radley obliged and were eager to talk Apollo Suns.

Lacuna, is as much an ambient LP as it is a journey into raw improvisation from pianist Holly Bowling and guitarist Tom Hamilton Jr.. Sure, tracks on this new LP from the Ghost Light band mates could certainly be featured on one of your meditation apps, but in truth, these jams are far more exciting as a distinct piece of music that came together organically. You see Holly was visiting Philadelphia last summer while pregnant with her first child. With Tom’s new studio The Ballroom just recently completed, the pair found some time to just sit down and muck around. The results were so interesting that Tom and Holly decided to put their 46 minute jam out there for the world to enjoy as Lacuna. I caught up with Tom to talk about Lacuna, and as our conversations tend to do, we meandered and talked about a bunch of stuff including Ghost Light, More and of course Joe Russo’s Almost Dead.

Neal Casal was a brilliant musician, singer, songwriter, and music aficionado who we lost way to early back in 2019. Like everyone else who crossed his path, I was devastated to hear that Neal sadly took his own life, just days after performing at the Lockn’ Festival. He was such a kind and gentle soul who was always ready to share his time talking about his own music, the music he collaborated on, and music more generally. I had the great pleasure of welcoming him to this show a couple of times and met him just a few months prior to his passing.

Gary Waldman, Neal’s manager, wanted to extend his close friend’s legacy and organized a benefit show just a month after Neal’s death where various artists performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. That show brought in a sizeable amount of money to the Neal Casal Music Foundation, which distributes instruments and lessons to students in the New Jersey and New York schools.

Realizing the impact of that show, and wanting to further Neal’s legacy, Waldman decided he’d draw up plans for an ambitious recording project that would see artists contribute recordings of Casal’s music. That project, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal was co-produced by his old pal Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and Neal’s band mate in Hard Working Americans and legendary rock producer Jim Scott. The five LP/3 CD box set was just recently released. The proceeds from the project will of course rest with the Neal Casal Music Foundation and a portion of which have already been earmarked for MusicCares and Backline a mental health organization for musicians.

There has been a palpable buzz over the last little bit for singer songwriter Neal Francis whose album "In Plain Sight" is due out November 5th on ATO Records. This Chicago based piano player is a bit of a throwback in everything he does. From his personal aesthetic to the kind of music he makes, Francis would not be lost in the mid 70s. That isn’t to suggest he’s just a copy cat of people we dig like Dr. John, The Meters or Allen Toussaint. It’s just that Neal gives you an immediate sense of comfort and familiarity and a distinct memory of what he’s going for with his craft. Neal is full of insightful, wonderful lyrics and the chops both vocally and on his instrument to pull off one of the most complete album efforts this year. It was a pleasure to catch up with Neal Francis to talk about the new record and much more.

Explaining The Slip and their sound is quite frankly near impossible. They are a trio made up of Brad Barr on guitar, drummer Andrew Barr and bassist Marc Friedman. In simplest terms, they are an avant-rock outfit that’s been playing music since 1996 in this configuration. But please don’t let that label fool you. like many of their contemporaries, they are a genreless band. The Slip, were a big part of the Jam Band scene in the late 90s and early 00s and have long been considered favorites of the musicians who made up that scene. It’s been 10 years since the band has toured as The Slip, but this fall they’ll be doing a North Eastern tour of the US coming on the heals of a very successful reunion of sorts at the JRAD Lockn Festival thing this past summer. Late last week, I caught up with Brad Barr to talk about all things The Slip.

For the next album, Gov’t Mule have produced their first real blues record, Heavy Load Blues arriving on-line and in store November 12 on Fantasy records. It’s a 13 track masterpiece with both Warren Haynes penned originals and a bunch of great cover songs, which Mule have of course transformed and turned into their own. While the record isn’t out for another few weeks, I caught up with the frontman of Gov’t Mule, Warren Haynes to talk about the record, how it came to be and what’s next for the band. I should mention, that for the most part we stuck to discussing the new record, just before Warren performed with Phil and Friends and was absolutely superb.

I get all kinds of pitches regarding guests for the podcast. I also pour over hundreds of hours of music that’s sent to me. So when a publicist sends me a press release about a hardcore artist who has recently had a musical epiphany and is listening to the Grateful Dead while going through the roller coaster of life and recovering from addiction, I’m obviously intrigued. What makes this story even more unbelievable for me, is that Wade MacNeil, the artist who has created and fronts the Dooms Children project, lives here in Toronto, and at no time ever did I think a member of post punk hardcore outfit Alexisonfire or The Gallows would ever find his way on to our show. I mean, if anything, his band mate Dallas Green who is also City and Colour would be a better fit for the kind of music and musicians we feature on this show. Having said all that, I was intrigued enough by Wade’s story and his cover of Friend of the Devil, to get him on the line to talk more about the project.

Marble Eyes are a rock band based out of the New Hampshire Seacoast. They are actually a supergroup made up of musicians from the area who came together to play music during the pandemic. The most recognizable member of the band may be bassist Eric Gould who at one point was in jam band Particle and is currently playing with Pink Talking Fish. There’s been a lot of buzz about this band on-line so I decided to contact Eric to learn more about Marble Eyes.

Just a few weeks ago, Larkin Poe and Nu Deco Ensemble released the collaborative effort Paint the Roses (Live in Concert)

The pairing is an interesting one with roots rock sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe being joined by members of the Nu Deco Ensemble, an orchestra led by conductor Jacomo Bairos and Artistic Director Sam Hyken. Together the larger ensemble performed songs from Larkin Poe’s 2020 release Self Made Man and a few other tunes in December of 2020 in Miami. Little Feat are, without a doubt one of the pioneering bands of the jam band scene. They’ve managed to keep going after key personnel have passed, and remain one of the most influential bands in rock music. The list of bands they’ve influenced is too many to list. 43 years into making records, Los Lobos, who actually formed in 1973 wanted to do something different for their latest release, the first on New West Records. Originally the plan was to do an all covers record, something the band is quite adept at doing, but upon deeper discussion they settled on narrowing the covers list to 13 songs from native LA musicians, since East LA is home. You can only imagine what a unique set of songs appear on Native Sons, since Los Lobos themselves have a very eclectic sonic presentation ranging from Mexican Folk Music to straight ahead rick tunes. On Native Sons, they masterfully work covers from The Beach Boys, Jackson Browne, War, and Buffalo Springfield to name a few.

I had the absolute pleasure to sit down with noted producer and Los Lobos member Steve Berlin who took me through some of the album’s highlights and some of the stories behind the recordings.

The conversation started when I asked Steve Berlin the band’s saxophonist and keyboard player, in a sort of tongue and cheek way if he’s a full member of Los Lobos at this point since he joined the band just a few years after the band’s inception.

Like you, we’ve been following the Midnight North story for a while now. For the uninitiated though,they are a roots rock Americana quartet out of the Bay Area. While there have been personnel changes over the years, the constants have been Grahame Lesh, Elliott Peck and Conner O’Sullivan who have been joined more recently by Nathan Graham. I purposely didn’t mention what each member contributes to the fabric of the band, because they all play a part in vocals and instruments besides their main instrument. This is a band with very talented musicians who bring a ton to bear both on recordings and in a live setting. Their work ethic has likely been passed down from Lesh’s famous father bass player Phil Lesh a founding member of the Grateful Dead.

On their forthcoming album, There’s Always a Story, due out July 23rd on Americana Vibes, the quartet’s individual prowess as musicians combines to make probably their best record to date. There is an ebb flow to the ten tracks between straight ahead Country twinged Americana, to more R&B and Soul laden funk tunes. What is consistent through out the experience is the bands commitment to strong songwriting, musicianship, and their signature harmonies.

I caught up with Graham and Conner fresh off the bands spring tour to talk about the record. The conversation started when Grahame suggested the addition of Nathan was a great boon to the band.

Umphrey's McGee’s forthcoming record is entitled “You Walked Up Shaking in Your Boots but You Stood Tall and Left a Raging Bull” and is due out July 17th. The instrumental album features 12 walk up or intro song the band has played, but now the tunes are codified and more structured. These are the sorts of projects you get to work on during a pandemic when the band can barely play or meet. I was and still am quite curious about what the band was up to the last 18 months. So when I sat down within Kris Myers, the bands drummer, that’s where the conversation started when I asked what the band had been up to aside from practicing, demoing up songs, working on new material or just chatting.

Grateful Deadication is a new project from saxophonist Dave McMurray. It’s a cerebral and interesting take on some of the Grateful Dead’s work. The album itself is due out next Friday on Blue Note records. Jazz renditions or even instrumental covers of Grateful Dead music isn’t specifically new, but like all of the band’s performances, the work on Grateful Deadication is fresh, exciting and very inspiring. That may be in part to the fact that before taking on the project legendary Detroit area saxaphone player Dave McMurray had limited exposure to the Dead’s music. So where did this all come from? I tracked down Dave McMurray to talk about the project, and the conversation started when I asked what inspired the project to begin with.

Doom Flamingo, is a synthwave band out of Charleston, South Carolina. Sure, it’s been a while since we spent a lot of time with synthwave, but what makes this band’s story a little more intriguing for our community, is that Umphrey’s McGee bassist Ryan Stasik is an active participant in this band’s rise. I’ve been a fan of Gabe’s work, dating back to his 2008 debut album The Gabe Dixon Band, which also included Wood Brothers member Jano Rix. Gabe is a classically trained pianist, but don’t let the credentials fool you. This guy can play just about any style of music really well and you’ll notice his influences right away. Many musicians who grow up in the shadow of their famous musician parents desperately try to shake their heritage in favor of setting their own path. Singer-songwriter Amy Helm isn’t one of those people. Instead she continues to pay homage to her father Levon Helm by continuing to pursue authentic musical experiences for herself and the audience. Her third album What the Flood Leaves Behind, is proof positive that Levon’s spirit purveys over an album full of material that is rich in lyrics, superior musicianship, and vocals that are undeniably outstanding. I caught up with Amy to unpack some of these sentiments as we explored her new album. I mentioned as the conversation began that it’s said you have your whole life to make your first album, the rush is on to get your second one made, and by the time you hit the third, it’s all about making a complete album for yourself, in attempt to figure out who you are as a musician or artist.

In the Moment is the seventh album from neo-reggae artists Rebelution. To proclaim this band simply a reggae outfit wouldn’t do their sound justice. This record was recorded over the pandemic and for the first time since the band’s inception it wasn’t recorded live with all the band members in attendance. Winterwood out now on Royal Potato Records and available wherever you stream music, is one of the latest releases from Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. What’s interesting though, is this album was buried and not even thought of since 2008. It’s an interesting story how this album and an additional 4 live albums have come to life. In fact, one could argue that if it weren’t for the global pandemic of the past year and a half, they may not have ever seen the light of day. I caught up with Reed Mathis, JFJO’s original bassist to talk about these latest releases, his tenure in the band and more. The conversation started when I asked Reed to remind us about the history of the band who blended all kinds of genres and styles to make very original music since they started in the late 90s.

It’s not terribly shocking that a band like the Infamous Stringdusters would go back to their roots, and put together a compilation of Bill Monroe tunes. I get it, he’s the founder of Bluegrass, and they are part of the group that is carrying the torch forward. What is confusing though, is that Monroe was a mandolin player, and the Dusters are without a mandolin player, opting for other cool instruments like the dobro and fiddle. I mean being a quintet is limiting. At any rate, a Tribute to Bill Monroe is filled with 7 great tunes, and I for one hardly miss the mandolin. I caught up with a busy Andy Falco, the Dusters guitar player and vocalist, to get a better understanding about this project. The conversation started when I discussed the idea that bluegrass has always been steeped in cover songs and the evolution of traditional songs along the way.

I first heard about the High Hawks, an all-star Americana outfit consisting of players from mostly the jamgrass scene from Chad Staehly of Hard Working Americans and Great American Taxi when I talked to him a few months back about the John Hartford tribute record, and the band’s contribution of Waugh Paugh.

The band includes, Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans),  Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra), and Will Trask (Great American Taxi).

Together, the band blends the sounds each member is known for and offer up a fresh take with original tunes and one cover on their debut release due out June 11th on LoHi records. I caught up with Tim Carbone and Chad Staehly to talk about the release and the band. The conversation started when I mentioned to the guys that our studio is about 5 miles away from where Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks used to play. That band, became “The Band”, who sort of invented Americana music. I suggested there were some similarities at least in sound between the band The Hawks became and the High Hawks which amused Tim Carbone…

Marcus Rezak is a classic rock n' roll cowboy. A man out on the plains, a gunslinger, well in this case, guitar slinger, with dreams, ambitions, and tons of talent. You know his name because of all the guest appearances he does on the Jam Band scene most notably with Umphrey's McGee. Aside from being an artist-at-large, Rezak also fronts Shred is Dead a Grateful Dead tribute band, and is a member of Digital Tape Machine and many other little bands. He does however take time to carve out solo records, as he did in 2018 with "Gateway to the Galaxy". He just released his sophomore follow up to that record, a 4 song, 30 minute EP "Truth in Sound" which absolutely needs to be heard. I caught up with Marcus who always seems to be on the road doing something. Our conversation started, when I asked how Truth in Sound featuring members of the Trey Anastasio Band came to be....

On the surface Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski are two great musicians who are known mostly as the drummer and keyboard players for the Trey Anastasio Band. And though that has been the case for the better part of the past two decades, these two have also been active in their own project Soule Monde. This funk jazz outfit have now released 4 albums. Garage a Trois, made its debut some 22 years ago with Mysteryfunk, to wide acclaim in 1999 and then evolved into several different configurations before a hiatus in 2015 after releasing " Always Be Happy, Stay Evil". For those who are unfamiliar, Leon III is primarily made up of Andy Stepanian and Mason Brent who were in Charlottesville based Wrinkle Neck Mules. I only bring up their former band as a point of reference for the kind of music they used to make, an Americana blend of honky tonk, alt.country and the like.
