From his humble beginnings with a weekend job at Orvis, Sav Sankaran has gone on to play a pivotal role in the company's corporate landscape. His experiences navigating the outdoor industry as a person of color have informed his unique approach to fostering belonging.
In this episode I caught up with Sav at the Outdoor Economy Conference in Cherokee, NC where he was a panelist speaking on “Breaking Barriers: Investing in DEI to Transform the Outdoor Industry”. With unmatched natural assets and a community intimately engaged in the outdoors, Western North Carolina is the outdoor industry hub of the east, and in 2021 a campaign was launched to develop a regional brand that celebrates and grows the outdoor industry across 24 counties.
Today, that campaign has blossomed into a full blown partnership called MADE X MTNS (Made by Mountains). In this episode I had the privilege of sitting down with Amy Allison, Partnership Director, to talk about how MADE X MTNS is working to expand the outdoor industry and economy across North Carolina’s Appalachian region.
The Partnership includes Outdoor Business Alliance of WNC, Mountain BizWorks, and the NC Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, as well as numerous stakeholders including regional universities, rural communities, economic development, and conservation organizations.

North Carolina is undeniably home to the best traditional rock climbing in the South. From beginners' routes to multi-pitch thrillers, North Carolina has it all, including the tallest rock face on the East Coast.
In this episode I sit down with one of Fox Mountin’s Guides, Forrest Stavish. He started climbing in 2004 after being introduced to bouldering at Rumbling Bald, NC, and not long after that bouldering trip, he got his first taste of exposure on Table Rock in the Linville Gorge. Since then, Forrest has climbed extensively in North Carolina and Tennessee and has traveled to places like Red Rock and Joshua Tree as well as the alpine of the North Cascades.
We’ll cover all of this, plus Forrest’s volunteer work with his local fire department for the past six years and his experience as a member of the Appalachian Mountain Rescue Team and Mountain Rescue Technician for NC Emergency Management.
Regardless of whether you are a climber, interested in getting into climbing, or just love stories of how these mountains have shaped people and helped make them who they are, there is a little something for everyone in this episode. Nestled between Little and Big Sandy Mush Balds, at an elevation of over 5,000 feet above sea level, lies one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in the Blue Ridge Mountains; The Cabins at Sandy Mush Bald, an off-grid and authentic Appalachian experience, located on 500 private acres atop the Newfound Mountains in Western North Carolina.
The Cabins at Sandy Mush started as a dream of the founder, John “Doc” Adler who longed to create a hike-in facility that provided a sense of hard-earned awe just like he found on the Appalachian Trail and at other infamous hike-in facilities.
“Doc” passed away a couple of years ago, but his spirit and the splendor of this place lives on through his niece, Lisa Adler, who I had the distinct pleasure to sit down with in this episode. I was only on the mountain for a few hours, but it stirred something deep in my soul, and a longing to return.

In this episode I sit down with very special guests Layla & Stacey Hildenbran, and Jay Hardwig from BRAVO which is Blue Ridge Adventures – Vision Optional, whose mission is To provide outdoor enrichment programsto youth with blindness and low vision.
This is an especially fun episode for me because I have been hearing about Layla’s story since my wife taught her in first grade six years ago. She is a super special girl who is completely blind…and pursues life full on. And it’s not by accident. Her parents, Stacey and Jason have always taken the approach that they didn’t want to limit Layla, but instead wanted her to thrive and experience as much as she possibly could in her life. The outdoors has always been a draw for their family, and they’ve made adventure a priority in their lives.
Sadly, there is a shortage of quality programs for students with visual impairments, particularly in the area of outdoor experiential education. Multiple studies have confirmed that students with visual impairments are more likely to be less active, less healthy, and less socially engaged than their sighted peers. These discrepancies have become more pronounced following the Covid pandemic.
So, when the camp program that Layla had been participating changed their focus and direction in the fall of 2022, Jay, Stacey and others knew what they had to do. They started the non-profit BRAVO program to continue bringing blind and visually impaired students into the outdoors so they too can experience the positive impact on their mental and physical wellbeing, and improve symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Pat Keller is known for his waterfall first descents as well as being a repeat winner of the coveted Green Race, winning the Great Falls Race and the inaugural Rey del Rio Waterfall World Championships in Mexico where he battled the world’s top boaters over three back-to-back waterfalls—a 25-footer, a 55-footer and a 35-footer. Accolades also include being a two-time Teva Mountain Games winner and the first Descents as I just mentioned including: Toxaway Falls, Linville Falls, Valser Rhein Falls, Cane Creek Falls, Wolf Creek Falls, and Ozone Falls.
All these accomplishments are super impressive, but what also stands out to me is Pat’s passion, zeal for life, and his constant need to set goals and push himself in whatever he does.
Although Pat now considers himself a retired pro-athlete, the quest for finding outdoor pursuits where he can totally immerse himself and find that flow state is as strong as ever. He may spend more time rallying around the endless network of gravel roads on his motorcycle these days, but he admits there are more whitewater kayaking missions on the horizon.
In this episode, Pat drops by the studio and we unpack all of this. We also talk about how being born and raised in the western North Carolina mountains has truly shaped him and helped develop his passions.

Jason Bowman grew up in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia chasing brook trout and working on trucks. Today he lives in Brevard, N.C. and still chases trout and works on trucks. The only difference today is that he’s a little bit older, LIVING with Stage 4 prostate cancer, a USMC Veteran, family man, business owner and creator in the outdoor gear space, and he spends as much time on the coast surfing as he does fishing the local rivers these days. Oh, and the trucks he works at O.G.R.E. on aren’t the everyday, run of the mill trucks. They are purpose-built tools designed to get adventurers to their favorite river, trail, or hunting spot.
In this episode Jason stops by the studio and we unpack a lot. We talk about life, family, business building, living life on purpose, and life’s perspective through the lens of cancer. We also talk about the effect of the outdoors on our physical and mental well-being, and the importance of making play and getting outside an integral part of our lives.

The NC Year of the Trail celebrates North Carolina’s vast and diverse collection of trails, greenways, and blueways which showcase its diverse landscapes – grand mountain vistas, quiet rivers, vibrant urban greenways, coastal forests, and the rolling hills of the piedmont.
These trails not only help make NC a healthier, more accessible, and fun place to live, they also strengthen the economy in a big way. You see, the outdoor recreation industry in NC has an economic impact of over 28 billion dollars and provides over 260,000 jobs in the state. Trails are the cornerstone of the industry, and all of this is a large part of why NC is the Great Trails State. Historically, the trail networks that make this all possible have rarely been part of the mainstream public discussion, but in 2023, that will change.
In this episode I sit down with Palmer McIntyre, NC Year of the Trail Director, and Beth Heile, a key voice and advocate on the planning committee, to unpack and chat about all things NC Year of the Trail. We talk about the historic $29.5 Million investment for State Trails, and the vision behind the largest statewide celebration of trails and outdoor recreation in the Old States history.
We also talk about how the NC Year of the Trail is meant to inspire people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds to try trails, to demonstrate the importance of trails to elected officials, boost outdoor recreation tourism across the state through Year of the Trail events in all 100 counties, promote safe and responsible use of trails, with the Outdoor NC Principles, and to advance diversity and inclusion on trails.

The North Carolina Fraser Fir Christmas tree is the most popular Christmas tree in North America, but did you know they are shipped into every state in the U.S. as well as the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, Japan and other points all over the world. The cool temperatures and large amounts of rainfall in the mountains of North Carolina create the perfect climate for Fraser firs. So, it’s easy to understand how over 50 million Fraser firs are grown in North Carolina, and that the Fraser Fir has been judged the Nation’s best according to the National Christmas Tree Association.
In this episode I sit down with Dr. Jim Hamilton who works for the NC Cooperative Extension Office and serves as the Watauga County Extension Director. He’s an expert on North Carolina Christmas Tree Industry and a fulltime resident in the High Country.
We talk about why Fraser Firs grow naturally only in the southern Appalachian Mountains…and the reasons may surprise you. This is a fun episode because we peek behind the veil of the Christmas Tree Industry and what makes North Carolina one of the top places in the entire country to grow Christmas Trees, and we discover what it takes, and how long it takes, to get a Christmas from a seedling to the tree stand in your home. Although widely accepted in Europe since the 1960’s, the thought of a gap year in our western culture makes many people, especially parents, uneasy and questioning whether the experience will be fruitful. But a 2015 study at Temple University found that the gap year experience had proved fruitful and unanimously positive: 98% said their year had helped them develop as a person, 96% found it increased their self-confidence, and 93% agreed that it had increased their communications skills. Many also reported that their gap year helped them acquire skills to be successful in their careers, develop a greater understanding of other cultures, and made them see themselves as global citizens.
In this episode, I catch up with my daughter, Karsyn, who graduated this past spring and is currently spending a gap semester at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado. We talk about what the gap year experience has meant to her, how she’s being challenged, and how she’s growing. We also talk about her love and passion for the outdoors, and how growing up in the Blue Ridge Mountains has helped shape her life and is impacting the things she wants to pursue in life.
In this episode I sit down with Andrew Garcia, who is the Managing Partner of Outdoor Adventure Partners. His company purchased the Wilderness Cove Campground along the lower Green River last Thanksgiving, and immediately began making improvements to the property in January of this year.
**We talk in depth about the new vision for this property and their desire to be good stewards of the land and be involved in the tight knit Green River Cove community. We also talk about all of the amazing improvements made so far, as well as some of the amazing features and amenities coming to the property in the near future.
Situated at the base of the Green River Gorge, and adjacent to the Green River Game Lands, Wilderness Cove truly offers something for the whole family. And, one of the best things about this area is that it is far less crowded than many of the other popular destinations in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Sonya and Necota Staples started their camping journey just a few short years ago and it quickly snowballed into off-roading and overlanding. With their newfound love of glamping, they wanted to share it with their friends and family, but no one understood why they wanted to “rough it” outside. So they started making YouTube videos to educate and encourage friends, family, and the Black and Brown community to experience the life-changing effect of the outdoors. Their newfound love and passion to experience the outdoors together made such a huge impression on them, that they became full-time overlanders and adventurers.
But, there was a bigger purpose to their new lifestyle, and we unpack that in this episode.
We talk about their heart for breaking down barriers, increasing diversity in the outdoor adventure travel community, and challenging the negative stereotypes that people of color don’t dwell and thrive in outdoor spaces. They want to help people be comfortable, curious and confident in nature.

In this episode, I sit down with Steven Reinhold, The Appalachian Adventure Company Co-Founder + Steward of the Stoke, who has been a force in the outdoor industry for many years. This is a special episode because it is a story of a remarkable place and fascinating history, told through the eyes of third generation resident, John Nichols III, whose grandfather helped restore Lake Toxaway to its former glory in the early 1960s. We talk about John’s earliest recollections of growing up in Lake Toxaway, living in what is now known as the Greystone, warm days summer & cool nights, lightning bugs, the sounds of nature, and a simpler way of life. There is an atmosphere surrounding Lake Toxaway that in John’s words, is nearly indescribable.

In this episode, Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins owners Joe Balcken and Shelton Steele dropped by the studio to hang out and talk about their love and vision for Wrong Way, the transformational qualities of the outdoors, and the intentionality of creating a sense of place. Both are former whitewater raft guides turned trailblazing entrepreneurs. They came up with the idea for Wrong Way over the shared desire to get back on the river and encourage others to connect with the outdoors, have inspiring experiences, and experience a little local culture.

The word community is, without question, central to the human experience. It conveys a sense of togetherness and positivity. Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves. And in some outdoor pursuits, community is key for a safe and enjoyable experience. That is definitely true when it comes to whitewater kayaking.
In this episode I travel down to the Green River Ranch to take part in the Inaugural GRASS Festival, and I sit down with Crom Carey, event organizer extraordinaire and one of the founding members of WACKO. What is WACKO you ask? I’m glad you did. It’s the West Asheville Canoe & Kayak Club - an organization with a huge heart for community and giving back to non-profits that serve the whitewater communities both locally and nationwide. In fact, building outdoor community is what brought Crom and I together for this episode as we reflected on the Inaugural GRASS Festival…which stands for the Green River Access Spring Shindig. Damascus is a small town with a big claim to fame: Seven nationally known trails, including the Appalachian Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail intersect within the town’s borders. The Damascus lifestyle is adventurous and creative, yet laid-back and well-paced. It’s a place where you can be super-active, or where you can reconnect with nature, rejuvenate, and find your inner peace.

I recently had the privilege of attending the 4th Annual Outdoor Economy Conference in Cherokee, North Carolina, where 600 outdoor industry businesses, conservationists, public land managers, development experts, nonprofit & government leaders, and entrepreneurs are looking to grow the outdoor industry in their communities and craft an economy that’s intimately tied to the quality and health of their places.
I had the distinct honor of sitting down with D. Reid Wilson, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, who is implementing the largest investment in outdoor recreation in North Carolina’s history, and Gayle Conelly Manchin, Federal Co-Chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission. We talked about how the beauty and diversity of the natural assets in North Carolina and the Appalachian Region have helped to help grow the outdoor economy in the region. We talk about how mountain communities & gateway towns in the region are embracing their proximity to natural assets and outdoor recreation, and how they’re bolstering quality of life both for residents and potential outdoor recreation employers like manufacturers, guide services, lodging and food, and all sorts of artisans. We also discuss how businesses are drawn to communities that offer employees access to outdoor recreational opportunities & a higher quality of life.

The Hickory Nut Gorge is a magnificent jewel in the mountains of Western North Carolina. This 14-mile-long canyon cuts a picturesque pass exposing spectacular sheer granite cliffs, and contains an abundance of undisturbed forests.
In this episode, I sit down with Peter Barr who led the development of more than 20 miles of new sustainable trails as well as the legislative authorization of the planned 130-mile Hickory Nut Gorge State Trail network. He is a two-time national award-winning trail designer, receiving recognition for outstanding construction and design for the three-mile Wildcat Rock Trail in 2018, and the 8-mile Weed Patch Mountain Trail and Tunnel Trail in 2019, recognizing Weed Patch as one of the best new trails in the country by the national Coalition for Recreational Trails.
We talk about the vast natural beauty in this region, and how the Bearwallow Mountain Trail was made possible due to conserved land owned by Conserving Carolina, and how this project led to further conservation efforts that made the development of this extensive trail network possible.

In fact, when COVID started to wreak havoc in 2020, the number of digital nomads in the US increased by nearly 50% from 2019. In the case of fulltime RV’ers Peter and Allison Barr, they started making plans for a 5-year journey around the United States long before the COVID Crisis. It’s no surprise the last couple of years have been a challenge for small businesses. And it’s likely that we all know someone whose life and business has been adversely affected by the pandemic. In this episode, I sit down with Scott Socha, Owner of Foot Rx Running, and we talk about how many of these themes played out in his personal life and how they chartered a different course for Foot Rx Running. In this episode, I head to Banner Elk, NC to visit with Tracy Tilley & Sheri Moretz for a behind the scenes look at the iconic Mast General Store. We take a trip back in time and learn how the Mast's down-home way of doing business is still alive today. Drawing on it's own story of resurgence, its no surprise that part of what adds to the nostalgic charm of the Mast General Store experience is their intentional alignment with areas undergoing revitalization. Buildings at every Mast location have interesting stories to tell about their hometowns.
The Original Mast General Store was built in 1883 and is located in Valle Crucis, NC. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the best remaining examples of an old country general store. When you visit a Mast General Store you feel like you’ve truly stepped back into a by-gone era. The historical locations, squeaky wood floors, antique fixtures, relics, enormously helpful & knowledgeable staff, wide range of daily necessities, and variety of goods from fashion to fried chicken cookbooks and toffee to tents, all collectively add to the experience.

Our public lands are among the most visited in the Southern Blue Ridge. The Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests receive over 10 million visitors annually, and the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains National Park are in the top 3 most visited parks in the Country. DuPont State Recreational Forest had its most crowded year ever last year, recording 1.3 million visitors. People love coming here and we can’t blame them. But declining budgets have stressed the U.S. Forest Service and led to closures at campgrounds, picnic areas, trails, & roads. In the last 20 years we’ve lost over 100 miles of trail in WNC. Besides the inability to explore these closed areas, there are also significant ecological implications with abandoned trails and roads.
In this episode I sit down with Josh Kelly, Public Lands Field Biologist with Mountain True, a Nonprofit organization that champions resilient forests, clean waters, and healthy communities. We talk about how a powerful plea to the Chief of the N.C. Forest Service led to a revised & sustainable forest service plan in 1994, and likely saved the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests from the Forest Plan at the time that called for cutting nearly the entire forest over a 100-year period. Josh shares his thoughts on the long overdue Forest Plan draft revision that was just completed, and how Mountain True hopes their work and influence will be reflected in the final draft. We also briefly discuss other ways Mountain True helps protect the places we share.

The mountains of North Carolina offer some unexpected treats for skiers and snowboarders. Snowmaking capabilities are outstanding and allow for a constant supply of fresh snow and great conditions. They emphasize family skiing, with a good mix of beginner runs to get first timers interested in the sport, and more advanced trails and surprisingly good vertical to provide ample stoke for even the most experienced skiers and riders.
In this episode I turn my attention to Beech Mountain Ski Resort, known as the highest-elevated outdoor adventure destination east of the Rocky Mountains. I sat down with Talia Freeman who is the Director of Marketing for Beech Mountain Resort, and we discuss what gives Beech its unique vibe that sets it apart…and keeps season pass holders and first timers coming back year after year.

Gorges State Park, located about halfway between Cashiers and Brevard, is set in the midst of plunging waterfalls, rugged river gorges, sheer rock walls and a high concentration of rare species. The Park receives over 80 inches of rain each year which is enough rain to qualify the area as a temperate rain forest. Most people are drawn to the park to explore Rainbow Falls, and Turtle Back Falls which lies just upstream, as well as Bearwallow Falls which lies in the northern section of the Park. Backcountry-style recreation has been a hallmark of Gorges with distance hiking & backpack camping…but trout fishing, mountain biking and horseback riding are also welcome in various parts of the Park’s rugged interior.
In this episode, I sit down with Kevin Bischof, the new Park Superintendent for Gorges State Park, and we talk about many of the things that make this park so special. Kevin goes in depth to describe the new front-country campground that is nearing completion, the challenges of managing a remote park that shares a boundary with a National Forest, waterfall & hiking safety, and environmental education programs. I was also surprised to learn there are actually 20 named waterfalls within the park, but due to the steepness and rugged nature of this park, they are only accessible to the most arduous and experienced hiker.

In 1975, 80% of the clothes Americans purchased were made in the USA, but in the 1980’s, the decline in American made apparel began. By the 1990’s almost no apparel was manufactured in the USA.
Western North Carolina fell victim to this overseas manufacturing trend. In the ’70s, there were five manufacturers operating within the limits of Old Fort. They made furniture and clothes and car parts, but they started closing in the ’80s, when the Old Fort Finishing Plant, a textile company, shut down its operations and let go 500 employees. The trend continued with most of the other manufacturers ceasing operations in the last two decades. But a new story is emerging. A modern-day renaissance really…and Kitsbow Cycling Apparel is an integral part of this resurgence.
In this episode, I sit down with David Billstrom, CEO of Kitsbow. We talk about the company moving their headquarters from Petaluma, California, to Old Fort, North Carolina, and the 60 new jobs the company has created to date. We also talk about why Old Fort was the perfect fit for this young company, and how they, along with Hillman Beer, sought to restore and convert the former Parker Hosiery Building into prime manufacturing space, and a destination pub that also serves remarkable locally sourced food. Kitsbow has since opened The Ride House, a retail space and café that serves as a meeting point for cyclists and a de-facto visitor’s center for people hiking and riding in the Grandfather District of Pisgah National Forest.
We also talk about partnerships with the local community, offering careers vs jobs, as well as environmental and sustainability initiatives that are driven by their lean manufacturing & made to order approach.

The Green River Game Lands contains just over 18,000 acres of wilderness and lies along the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Henderson and Polk counties. It is home to the Green River which cuts a rugged chasm as it descends the Blue Ridge escarpment providing numerous whitewater sports opportunities like kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and fishing in wild trout waters. At its most impressive point, the Green River drops 400 feet in just over 1.5 miles running through a crevice known as the Narrows, which is full-on Class V savage whitewater.
In this episode I sit down with John Grace, Executive Director of the Green Race. We talk about the race’s 26-year history, the hugely talented racers, the race’s influence on boat design, emerging young paddlers, and the challenges of putting on an extreme event in a relatively remote and rugged wilderness area. The G5 Trail Collective Story
The G5 Trail Collective is a 501-c3 non-profit initiative powered by Camp Grier in partnership with the USFS, the five counties that make up the Grandfather Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest, local communities, and the recreational trail user groups. The G5 Collective was conceived as a solution to the lack of funding for trail maintenance and trail development projects in the Grandfather District. The working group recognized that the district is a tremendous asset and could be a significant force to help build healthy and economically vibrant rural communities. Recent progress in state-sponsored trails like the Fonta Flora, Wilderness Gateway Trail, and the Overmountain Victory Trail make this a unique time to look at the Grandfather District trail systems and develop new connections from these state trails to federal public lands near rural communities.
The 100-Mile Fonta Flora State Trail will connect Morganton to Asheville with hiking and biking trails along the Catawba River, creeks, around Lake James, through the mountains and into our charming downtowns like Morganton, Marion, Old Fort, Black Mountain, and Asheville’s River Arts District. It will provide an unparalleled experience for people of all ages and abilities. The full scope of the Fonta Flora State Trail will take many years, but the 32 mile loop around Lake James, as well as other completed sections in Morganton, Marion, Old Fort & Black Mountain have already served as a spark to ignite the passions to complete the project.
This region has no shortage of recreational and cultural amenities, and by linking these communities and natural assets, the Fonta Flora State Trail will leverage mountains, waterways, and main streets which have made the region a destination for adventurers both near and far.
In this episode I traveled over to Black Mountain to sit down with Beth Heile, Executive Director of the Friends of Fonta Flora State Trail, to talk about the origin and vision for this incredible state trail and navigating through the process of becoming a State Trail. We also talk about the challenge of keeping a large project like this moving forward when it involves three counties, multiple constituents & decision makers, getting bills passed in the NC House and Senate, securing funding to move the project from concept to completion…and a whole lot more, including sections to enjoy right now, and a vision of what is to come.

In the early 20th century, forestry agencies constructed dozens of lookout structures atop western North Carolina’s mountains as the backbone of a fire detection system. Many of these lookouts survive in North Carolina today, and they represent some of the most scenic destinations for hikers who want to see the incredible vistas of the southern Appalachian Mountains.
In this episode, I sit down with Peter Barr, Author of Exploring North Carolina’s Lookout Towers, an incredible book that leads outdoor enthusiasts to the spellbinding panoramic vistas from 28 of western North Carolina’s still-standing historic fire towers. Part hiking guide, historical anthology, and part photography collection, this book contains fascinating stories about the history and folklore of the lookouts & their fire lookout inhabitants, a detailed guide of hikes and drives to each, and details about the views from the top.

Pete Ripmaster has always considered himself an athlete, but it wasn’t until much later in his life that he discovered running. When his mom passed away, Pete was in a real bad place personally, so he packed up everything he owned and knew, and headed into the Alaskan wilderness to find himself. After his soul searching experience, Pete returned to the lower 48 and found himself in Telluride Colorado.
Soon after, he decided to make good on a promise to his mom to do great things, and honored her legacy by running 50 marathons in 50 states and raising over $62,000 for cancer research in the process. This experience fueled his hunger to accomplish even more and served as a springboard for his cause-driven running journey.
After having overcome numerous setbacks and challenges, five attempts, and a near death experience, Pete became the 2018 champion of the Iditarod Trail Invitational. Now, you’ve likely heard of the Iditarod before, and it probably conjures up thoughts of a dog drawn sled making its way through the Alaskan wilderness in sub-zero temperatures. Keep that mental picture, but now image a grueling 26 day, 1000-mile self-supported foot race through the harsh winter conditions of the Alaskan wilderness, and you have the backdrop for this inspiring story of adventure, redemption, and a life well lived.
In this episode Pete shares his unbelievable story of persistence and change. While his mountaintop moments are worth celebrating, Pete is quick to tell you that lessons are learned the valleys of his life, too. Through his struggles with depression, Pete has become a passionate advocate for mental health and the practice of mindfulness. He believes everyone deserves the opportunity to live a life of hope.

You know that feeling you get when you’re traveling to the mountains for vacation or a weekend excursion, and you get your first glimpse of the peaks and ridges…The awe of the beauty of the mountains, the building anticipation as you look forward to slowing down, unplugging & taking it easy. Well, you’re in good company. Tourists have been flocking to the mountain towns in western North Carolina since the late 1800’s.
In this episode, we sit down with Michele Fleming, Chair of Explore Tryon Tourism Development Authority, to talk about how the Town of Tryon quickly grew as a resort town, bringing tourists to the area to enjoy the mountain views and good climate. Many artists, writers and crafters chose to stay – at least for a while – including the stage actor William Gillette, most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
The equestrian roots run deep in this community thanks to Carter Brown, who organized the Tryon Riding and Hunt Club and the first Blockhouse Steeplechase in the 1940s. And, Tryon was even once well known for its table and wine grapes. Due to prohibition, these family businesses dried up over time, but beginning in the early 1990s, this interesting part of Tryon’s history was revived. About a dozen vineyards now lie about 10 miles to the east in the Tryon foothills.
Many of the historic buildings on Trade Street, as we know it today, were in place by 1900, and have contributed to Tryon receiving the designation of historic district by the National Register of Historic Places.
Today, Downtown Tryon has a nice selection shops, art galleries and restaurants along Trade Street. It’s a vibrant town, and you’ll soon understand how Tryon lives up to its name as the “Friendliest Town in The South”

Saluda, North Carolina, a tiny town of a little over 500 fulltime residents, is a mountain oasis with a Historic Downtown surrounded by rugged and accessible wilderness. The Hickory Nut Gorge is a 20,000 acre, 14-mile long canyon that cuts a steep pass through the Blue Ridge escarpment. For one, without the leaves on the trees, winter landscapes open up and long-range views are breathtaking. The crowds are almost nonexistent, and cooler temperatures make hikes a lot more pleasant without the bugs & snakes. In this episode I sit down with Kevin Adams, a naturalist, writer, teacher, and photographer who has had a lifelong love affair with nature and the outdoors. He has authored nine books, led photo tours all over the world, taught seminars and workshops, and given countless programs about photography and the outdoors. He is the author of North Carolina Waterfalls, was which first published in 1994 and is currently in its 3rd Edition. The book continues to be one of the quintessential guides to waterfalls in North Carolina. It includes over 1,000 waterfalls and specifically highlights more than 300 of the best waterfalls found in North Carolina with full descriptions, comprehensive directions, and beautiful photographs. Adams has always tried to be a good steward for the waterfalls, but with the explosion of people visiting them in these social media times, he felt that more needed to be done. I love the Great Smoky, Blue Ridge and Southern Appalachian Mountains. I love the culture, people, beauty, and recreational opportunities. I love the small towns, each with their own unique personality, and history. I love that in these mountains there is still a remnant of the “good ole days” where small town main streets were inviting and the pace of life is a little slower. I love that I get to live here, and I love learning about the great people and places that make our mountains special and unique. The mountains captured their hearts and they made it their goal to find a way to put down roots. When the weather begins to cool off in the Southeast it means the best season of the year is fast approaching. Apple picking, a favorite fall pastime, actually begins in early September in western North Carolina. And, no apple tastes better than the ones you pick yourself - fresh off the tree. This autumn/fall activity is definitely one to have on your family bucket list. In this episode I sit down with Farmer Mike Stepp, a third generation apple farmer, who owns Stepp's Hillcrest Orchard, a beautiful 105 acre farm in a country setting on the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina. Mike has a passion for growing apples and he enjoys sharing the farm with the many visitors every year. With the help of his family (wife, daughter's, son-in-law, and grandchildren) they've added pick your own pumpkins, grapes, and sunflowers. After a three month, 14K mile father-and-son camping trip that included 49 campgrounds,, 20 states and provinces across the USA and Canada, and visiting numerous national parks and forests along the way, Earl B. Hunter Jr was astonished that he only saw one other Black family camping on their entire journey. It was then that Earl knew he was being called to a greater mission. In October of 2019, Earl stepped away from an executive sales role with an outdoor equipment manufacturer and set out to form Black Folks Camp Too, a company where he hopes to break down racial lines in the outdoors.
