I want to make the case for the disciple making community being one who takes God’s words seriously and His Story as the script by which we share life together in Mesa.
- God's kingdom comes slower than we like, but in perfect timing.
- God is up to something beautiful and compelling in the church.
- You have a role to play in God's unfolding story.
Paul wants to shape both the Ephesian church in their imaginations and their activities. He’s telling them again the good news and inviting them into a deeper way of living as God’s new creation community- a way of life that, because of Jesus, is already open to them, with blessings that are already theirs, and a power they already possessed. Lets' go.
We looked at Peters “from now on moment” in July.. now we take a look at Matthew’s and recognize again that when we say “Yes” to Jesus we are joining with a redeeming King, His Community, and His Mission. We are all coming in having sinned, been sinned against, and having had people try to process sin with us. All of us. That means none of us are neutral and all of us have something to learn from Jesus.

Who here is at risk of compromising our calling or falling into Jesus + something = fulfillment? All our hands should be up.
We all have the propensity to say Yes to Jesus and then also try to say Yes to things that seem like we need to get for ourselves.
So what do we do when we are trapped in sexual sin and idolatry? Kevin Platt helps us see from this letter in Revelation 2 that Jesus gives a merciful path back to him! We remember. We repent. And we Return.
In Jesus' letter to the church in Ephesus he writes a letter that could have been written to many churches today. He affirms the work they've been doing, but calls them to repentance in one big area: They no longer love like they used to. Their love of God, one another, and probably even their city had been replaced with something else.

A definition: “Spiritual formation is the journey of continually responding to the reality of God’s grace shaping us into the likeness of Jesus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, in the community of faith, for the sake of the world.”
How do we live in light of the redemption and eventual restoration of God. How do we live as God’s new humanity right now? I don’t know a better answer to give you in one week then to say: We are called to be people whose actions and intentions are love.
These words have launched movements of missionaries for the last two millenia... now hear them for yourself.
David and Kevin lead Missio Mesa in a dialogue discussing the hidden treasures and traps of following Jesus in our cultural moment.
Some of us think we are humble because we serve others, but our pride comes in when we don’t let Jesus serve us. Humility isn’t just serving, it’s being humble enough to be served.
Jesus is our hope, but the scope and schedule of his healing work may not always line up with what we expect.
The good news of the kingdom of God is that the Father welcomes anyone who would turn to him. Running away from God at full speed? He loves the religious and welcomes us to the table. Realizing that your religion has been more about obeying the rules and not actually a loving relationship with God? Good News, He loves us and welcomes us to the table.

We need to see that the “how” of loving your neighbor is to remember that Jesus is the true Great Samaritan.
Matthew 14 perfectly paints a contrasting picture of the way of the empire and the way of Jesus. This 2 act drama plays out over the beheading of John (A meal with Herod in his kingdom) and the feeding of the 5k (a meal with Jesus in his kingdom.)
There’s a haunting call that yes, there is a reign that leads to death, but you don’t have to choose to give allegiance to that king. There’s another option a better option. And a better way of life spent following Jesus.
May we be a community who lives out of abundance, healing, and life - not scarcity, hurt, and death.

Much like the appetizer, David was giving Israel a taste of what was to come in Jesus, the main act of the meal. A good appetizer will excite you for what’s to come, it will give you a taste of what is to come, but it cannot fill you up fully. That’s the main course's job. To fill us.
You see David is extremely important in this story. In fact it’s hard to find another character in the Bible as important as David, besides Jesus. He’s instrumental in the story of God moving in his people.
But this story is about a King coming who would do what David could not - Finally make things right.

- Some stories have shaped your life. Some have literally changed the trajectory of your existence. This story is one of those for me. My prayer for us tonight is that our lives together are gloriously disrupted by a fresh realization of who God is and in that encounter we realize who we are called to be.
Even on the darkest day, God is still relentlessly pursuing his good plan of redemption.

God pursues and redeems those with sketchy pasts and even those who have intentionally traded in God’s design for selfish gain. Let’s be clear- we all need Jesus and he is the one who never traded in his birthright or had to deceive to get his way!
When we have a bigger and better view of God through his story we will be a community who better reflects his character in the everyday moments of life. That means that this is the story that needs to orient you at your job, at your school, Not just a life of memorizing facts, but of being mesmerized at the good God who created a good world.
This year we are setting out to be a faithful gospel presence in Mesa by living as: An abiding presence. A resilient presence. A hopeful presence. That The king has come and he welcomes all sojourners and strugglers. The marginalized and the minimized are welcomed at his table. This story is pivotal in both our understanding the story of Jesus and so influential in the story God is writing in Missio.
We are going to look at what is historically called the Magnificat and one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

In a world that already seemed chaotic, we are now faced with even more information. And it is overwhelming. How do we cope in healthy ways? Listen in to this conversation. It’s a good one.

I know our first flinch may be to keep the story at a distance. To view from behind a screen... but come with me into the dusty streets. Watching and walking, heart racing, mind filled with questions, what would you say when He asked: “What do you want?”
As a church, we want to put ourselves in places to continually be aware of the presence of God. This teaching is how we do that is by first remembering the good news and then secondly practicing rhythms of life following Jesus together.

I get that there’s some foggiest about who God is and what he’s done. We get clarity through the Story of God, we get clarity through quiet moments with the spirit, we get clarity as we sing good songs to God that blow some of the fog off the mountain, and hopefully this message will change your life once again as you get just a glimpse of God.
We need to think higher of God than we do in order to properly see ourselves.
Psalm 16:11 says, “You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.”
If we are: Enjoying God’s presence, and being changed in his presence, over time we will be a faithful presence.
Christmas is not a holiday for those who have it together, but for those of you, who like me who need Jesus. It’s a holiday for those who feel lonely, lost, and left out. It’s a reminder, for those who struggle with disease, addiction, and pain. It’s a signpost for each of us to remember that what we see is not all there is. Wonder and worship await those who are wiling to look to the King whose birth we celebrate this season.
Well, says Paul, here you are in the middle of the world’s night—but the spirit of Jesus within you is telling you it’s already daytime. You are already children of the day, children of light. God’s new world has broken in upon the sad, sleepy, drunken and deadly old world. That’s the meaning of the resurrection of Jesus, and the gift of the spirit—the life of the new world breaking in to the old. And you belong to the new world, not the old one. You are wide awake long before the full sunrise has dawned. Stay awake, then, because this is God’s new reality, and it will shortly dawn upon the whole world.

Today Paul and his church planting team remind their friends how to live in light of both Advents to Jesus and he hits three big ways that we can either follow our own route or along with the storyline of God’s story.
Tim Williams leads us through a discussion on the importance of caring for each others faith and the joy of participating in God’s work in other people’s lives!
They were convinced that Jesus had come once and that he would come again, but what about the right now? The end seemed like it may be further than any of them could endure what were they to do?
What does that kind of ministry that is present with real people look like? I don’t have all the answers, but in our text in 1 Thessalonians I think we start to see some of the necessary ingredients of real life ministry.
Two Encouragement:

The power for making disciples comes from Jesus authority not your ability.
-
The presence of Jesus is with you as you follow Jesus and lead others to do the same.
The good news of Jesus changed the history of the world. That same news can change you. You ready for this?
No one becomes elite at anything by ignoring the fundamentals. No One. You can’t become the best basketball player if you never learn to use your left hand, you can’t become a gymnast if you don’t stretch, you can’t do motocross if you never learn the gears, you can’t slay on an electric guitar if you never learn music, and you can’t stay faithful in following Jesus if you ignore these verses.

“Participating in God’s glory-sharing life, then, happens in two contexts: scattered and gathered. Worship scattered is the Spirit-filled life of the Christian in the world, and worship gathered is the meeting of God’s people to remember, encourage, and bless one another.” - Mike Cosper
But Why? Why is this a habit that we need to have in our lives? Why does this matter so much?
Bottom line: If it’s your conviction that this is your church, we want to call you to be generous with your time, talents, and your treasures. Let us choose to live with less so that others can experience the good news that we have experienced.
When we are brought into the family of God the intention is that we grow up in our faith. That we continue to grow our roots deep in the gospel and that the fruit of that extends to bless our families, communities, neighborhoods, and city.
What if there was a day where we were uniquely reconnected with God, rooted in His story, and able to rest?
“I’ve learned to quiet my soul…” But have you? Really? Pastor Chris Gonzalez of Missio Tempe preaches liberating gospel realities over our common excuses for not slowing down and being quiet before the God who invites us into his story.
Eugene Peterson said he was convinced that “only as we develop raw honesty and detailed thoroughness in our praying do we become whole, truly human in Jesus Christ, who also prayed the Psalms.”

The first half was our family sharing ways that Jesus has used the story of his life, death, and resurrection to shift our lives over the last six months. Our recorder only worked for seven minutes this week. We hope the Spirit uses it to encourage, convict, and speak good news to you.
No matter the reason that you are here, you are here because Jesus wants you to hear good news. This news is good for you today whether you’ve been following Jesus for 15 minutes or 50 years.
Jesus message was one of healing, hope, and reconciliation. Not only of people to God but people to each other and of all creation being restored. This message was radical, led to loving all kinds of people, and shattered peoples small conception of what God was supposed to do.
This is where the real magic happens. It’s where neighbors become friends, and friends become family. It’s where life is lived, tears are shed, humanity is revealed and grace is extended. It’s where hours are spent and stories are shared. Again and again. It’s the most prayed over room in our home, it’s the place where our missional community gathers for renewal, repentance, and rejoicing. We’ve planted churches around our table, seen marriages dissolve, and new couples start flirting.
The table is perhaps the most sacred space you have in your home- and that’s not just me talking. That’s Jesus.

When God’s Spirit shows up up miracles happen- BUT - you may have to get your feet wet first.
Let me ask you: What is the journey of faith you’ve been called into together? For me I want this to be where I continue to walk, with wet feet, following the spirit into the places he alone can lead us into and out of.
I want my days to be filled with this kind of faith, but what was faith before is now sight. He continually invites us into new places where we have to continually trust him. The journey so far does not just repeat itself.
God is inviting us into new spaces, forged by practicing ancient practices in our cultural moment. Will we follow Him?
