There's a lot to talk about in Star Trek: Picard, Season 2, Episode 6, "Two of One" with Jean-Luc trying to reach Renée in time to save her mission while Agnes is further tempted by the Borg Queen—in a musical number! Kevin and Mike explore these moments, as well as Adam Soong's dangerously self-interested relationship with Kore, plus the difference between pride and hubris and how we can find that glimmer in the dark Jean-Luc talks about. And Kevin expresses feelings about the writing of this episode. Some might call it a rant. See what you think. And of course, there's another Golden Self-Sealing Stembolt to be awarded in this week's edition of Star Trek Trivia!

Returning to our series honoring the 35th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Kevin and Mike discuss one of the series' best and most important episodes, "The Measure of a Man." The hearing that decides the fate of Data as either a person or property sees a lot of things on trial—Data's personhood, of course, but Picard, Riker, Maddox, Captain Louvois, and Starfleet itself are all being tested in the fire. Kevin and Mike explore a wide range of ideas in this episode, including respecting people's identities, love that costs us something, and how the Imago Dei is reflected and projected in those actions. They also discuss how the trials in our lives can be crucibles of truth—refining fires—for our own hearts. Plus, Star Trek news about comic book and film releases, and audience feedback about Star Trek IV!

Kevin and Mike review Star Trek: Picard, Season 2, Episode 5, "Fly Me to the Moon," covering everything from its abundance of lookalike characters and advanced 21st-century technology to the fun of seeing Brent Spiner and John DeLancie together in an episode directed by Jonathan Frakes! There's so much going on here—a powerless but still meddling Q, connections to Gary Seven, and a member of the Picard family, along with some interesting Easter eggs. Mike and Kevin cover all that and more, plus Star Trek Trivia!

Treksphere staff writer Ruth Anne Amsden joins Kevin again for a very personal glimpse into her background and Star Trek's influence on her life. Growing up in a fundamentalist Christian sect, Ruth was told that women had no voice, no agency, and no leadership roles. But in Star Trek, she saw women who were equals, had important roles, and spoke their minds. She was inspired by them and by her mother and grandmother—who broke the rules to smuggle Star Trek to her in the form of clandestine television viewings, audio cassettes, and novels—to learn to be an independent woman and rescue her faith from an oppressive form of religion. It's a wonderful story you'll want to hear!

Mike returns this episode to join Kevin in a discussion of Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4, Episode 12, "Species Ten-C," which Mike calls "the finest first contact story Star Trek has given us in 55 years." As usual, they have a lot to talk about, including why Jett Reno was the perfect person to finally reach Book, how the encounter with Species Ten-C reflects other excellent sci-fi, and whether Book is in an abusive relationship with Tarka. They also discuss whether Christians have historically lived up to the name of Christ the way Book tries to live up to the name of his mentor and how vitally important it is for us to strive to do so. They also speculate about the Borg Queen's intentions and gush over Alison Pill and Santiago Cabrera as Dr. Agnes Jurati and Captain Cristóbal Rios. Between his questionable motives, ethical dubiousness, and deceitful ways, Q hardly qualifies as a stand-in for God. But does his interaction with Picard and the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 2, Episode 16, "Q Who?" nonetheless somewhat mirror the biblical story of Job? What are his motivations for wanting to join the crew? What are the implications—for good or ill—of his forcing a confrontation with the Borg? And what can we learn from Picard's appeal to Q in this episode? Kevin and Mike cover all that and so much more, plus Star Trek news and audience feedback in our ongoing series celebrating the 35th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation!

We had a lot to talk about in this episode! Kevin and Mike first explore Star Trek: Prodigy's mid-season finale, Season 1, Episode 10, "A Moral Star, Part 2," discussing the liberation of captives, a voice for the voiceless, and the heartbreaking ethical implications of Zero's actions. Then they roll the dice on Season 4, Episode 8 of Star Trek: Discovery, "All In." Is it an exciting and fun way to explore character stories and advance the DMA plot? Or is it derivative and less interesting than other episodes this season? And what does it say about love, values, and the burden of caring for others? Mike welcomes Kevin back to the center seat this week as they discuss Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4, Episode 5, "The Examples" and the very important ideas it raises about agency and respect for the consciences of others. Then it's time to answer Star Trek Twitter's most burning question this Christmas: "Is Star Trek: Generations a Christmas movie?" If so or if not, what are some other Star Trek films--and even episodes--that reflect Christmas in one way or another? David and Mike take the conn this week in Kevin’s unexpected absence (he’ll be back next ep!) for a spirited and Spirit-focused discussion of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, which is 30 years old this month! What does it say about its characters’ strengths and failings, and suggest about how God is at work through it all? Plus, a discussion of Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4, Episode 4, “All Is Possible,” Trek news, an audience question for the holiday season, and more!

George Kirk's sacrifice and Jim Kirk's destiny in 2009's Star Trek lead to the consideration of how we love one another into being and the gift of new life in the love of God.
In these devotional segments, you are invited to make some sacred space and time. You might wish to light candles in a home Advent wreath. You might take a quiet moment alone, or with those you love. Whatever you do, I invite you to join me, every Sunday of Advent, as we seek out new life in the incarnation of Christ.

It's a whale of an episode! (Sorry.) Kevin and Mike are diving deep on this one (oh, dear) as they plunge (make it stop) into Season 4, Episode 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, "Choose to Live," exploring, among other things, the ends and beginnings of paths within the will of God, and the ethics of the Qowat Milat. And of course, they're also celebrating the 35th anniversary of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home! From its relationship to Spock as a Christ figure to redemption and creation care, there's a boatload (not again) of ideas to explore! All that, plus an audience question about immortality and the farewell appearance of our beloved Nichelle Nichols await in this sensational, cetacean-al episode! (Yup. We got one more whale joke in!)

It's our 50th episode! Kevin, David, and Mike discuss Star Trek: Discovery, Season 4, Episode 2, "Anomaly," finding themes relating to grief and recovery, if also some issues with its writing. Plus, we talk about the big update from Paramount that repairs a Star Trek catastrophe and LeVar Burton's new game show. But the main story is Star Trek: First Contact, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month! It's all about the weaknesses and strengths of flesh and humanity, how we deal with pain and shortcomings, and the heroics of being ourselves. We also re-cast an old audience question with special emphasis on the Borg. We won't say "Resistance is futile," but we really think you should listen!

And since Prodigy is designed to introduce newcomers--and especially kids--to Star Trek, they also talk about how they introduced their own kids to Star Trek, navigating the tricky spaces of age-appropriateness and taste. This leads to a conversation about how we introduce our kids to faith, both inside and outside church settings, curating important ideas for young hearts and minds. On the day of William Shatner's launch into space aboard a Blue Origin rocket, Kevin and Mike discuss the implications of Captain Kirk's sub-orbital adventure. Is this merely a high-flying joyride for billionaires and the cultural elite? Or is this the beginning of more broadly accessible space flight and an expression of deep human longings? Is it perhaps a bit of both? And since we were off last week, we also discuss the past two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks: Season 2, Episode 8, "I Excretus," and Season 2, Episode 9, "wej Duj." These episodes offer some of the best moments of the series, while also including some controversial elements as well. Along the way, the discussion covers our relationship to corporations and churches, our place in the universe and relationship to God, and the color of Klingon blood!

Polarize the hull plating! It's the 20th anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: Enterprise! Kevin and Mike discuss how the series dealt with Vulcans, its broader impact on the Star Trek universe (which might be greater than you think), and even that controversial theme song. They also explore how well Star Trek: Lower Decks understands the heart of Trek in Season 2, Episode 6, "The Spy Humongous." Plus, they cover some Star Trek news and an audience question about alien species. It's been a long road, but we've got faith of the heart that you'll enjoy this episode!

It's an embarrassment of content! Kevin, David, and Mike have a "Tribble-ton" of news to discuss in a special edition Star Trek Day News segment, plus the latest Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 2, Episode 5, "An Embarrassment of Dooplers." It might just be Kevin's favorite LDS episode yet! And for the main topic, they talk about the creatures brought to mind both by that episode and by Kevin's son, the galaxy's most adorable invasive species, Tribbles! From comedy to ecology to the limits of love, they cover it all, just in time for another fascinating response from the audience. So set aside your troubles, cuddle up with your Tribbles, and listen in!

It's Star Trek Day! 55 years ago today, Star Trek premiered with the first broadcast of "The Man Trap, an episode neither produced nor intended as the series premiere. Mike and Kevin talk about that episode, plus what the premiere could have been with Star Trek's historic pair of pilots, "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before," which are rife with implications about theology and what it means to be human--implications have remained part of Star Trek for 55 years and show no signs of being lost!
Plus, we share our thoughts on Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 2, Episode 4, "Mugato Gumato," along with Star Trek News, our Star Trek Day wish lists, an audience question, and a response to our audience question from last week! It's a packed episode for a special day.

Star Trek has reached 800 episodes! That 800th episode is Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 2, Episode 3, "We'll Always Have Tom Paris." Kevin, David, and Mike discuss its three storylines, character development, and connection to the broader Star Trek universe. Plus, we each bring a list of our 8 favorite episodes (along with a few honorable mentions) and discuss some of the theological implications of Star Trek's narrative universe and how well it has stayed true the vision laid out in Gene Roddenberry's original "Star Trek Is" memo. All that, plus news and an audience question like none we've had before! Ensign, ahead Warp 800! (Actually, don't do that. You'll kill us all. Just listen to the episode.)

We're back for Season 2 with a Special Extended Episode! This week, Mike and Kevin explore strange energies, super nerdy callbacks, character development, and more as they discuss the first two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 2, "Strange Energies" and "Kayshon, His Eyes Open." They also take a special look at Gene Roddenberry in celebration of what would have been his 100th birthday, in particular discussing his theology and views on religion--which might surprise you! Plus, there's Star Trek News, an audience question about Data and Lore, and a special segment about why we took our unplanned break. It's a long one, but we couldn't help it. Welcome to this special bonus "lost" episode of The Gospel According to Star Trek Podcast!
At the end of Season 1, the whole crew (Kevin, Tim, Mike, and David) recorded a fourth and final episode in our Eastertide series on Star Trek Christ figures, this time on Kahless the Unforgettable, the Christ/Moses figure of Klingon culture.
Unfortunately, our connection went crazy and a huge chunk of Kevin's audio was lost. But we were able to recover the audio--albeit in a much lower quality--from the Zoom files. With some clever editing, Kevin actually managed to make an episode out of it, though it is not up to our usual audio standards, starting at about the 56-minute mark. Still, we had a great discussion and we're very happy to share it with you. We'll be back soon with the start of Season 2!
We hope you enjoy the "Lost" Episode 36: The Unforgettable!
This special episode is being released just prior to the premiere of Season 2, but our faithful supporters got to hear it early!

Kevin and David go deep into the Fire Caves of Bajor to discuss Benjamin Sisko as a Christ figure in this third installment of our Eastertide series. We cover Sisko's relationship with Dukat, his human and divine parentage, and of course, the climax and melancholy resolution of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Along the way, we explore atonement. incarnation, mimetic theory, and more! Plus, we have Star Trek news and an audience question about introducing people to Star Trek.

Mike is back this Easter week to kick off a new series of episodes as he and Kevin discuss Spock as the first of three major Star Trek Christ figures. We cover Star Trek II, II, and IV (yes, Spock is Jesus in the funny one with the whales) and aspects of Spock's character that particularly qualify him to be a Christ figure. There is a lot to talk about! We also cover some of the news that was revealed in this year's First Contact Day celebration, including (spoiler alert!) what to expect in the next season of Star Trek: Picard and our review of the teaser trailers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 and Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2. Plus, Kevin answers an audience question about his least favorite Star Trek film!

Kevin welcomes back Sue from Women at Warp as we continue Women’s Future History Month! This time, Sue will tell us more about Women at Warp and some of the ways in which they have discussed religion on their show. She will also be sharing about her personal journey with religion as a pastor’s kid and as a woman, as well as how her Star Trek fandom influenced her personal development. It’s an intriguing conversation about the convergence of faith, doubt, gender, and religion, and how one survives at that intersection. Plus, we’ll talk about why we love Deep Space Nine’s Winn Adami!

"I don't want any more cracks about the Book!" So says Bela Okmyx in the Original Series episode, "A Piece of the Action," but Kevin and his guest Mike Poteet decide to ignore Okmyx and make all the cracks they want! Mike--a professional writer and ordained Presbyterian minister--beams in to talk about his piece for Reel World Theology's Trektember 2020 about sacred texts in "A Piece of the Action," "The Omega Glory," and "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky." Along the way, Kevin and Mike have a discussion about how we relate to the Bible and other sacred texts and how these episodes can be instructive in that process.

Michael Burnham decided this season that she was "done being reflexively supportive," but we are--reflectively--supportive of Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery! In this episode, we throw structure off the turbolift and reconfigure our programmable matter into a free-wheeling discussion of this season! We'll also talk about diversity--including religious diversity--as well this season's moments of prayer and Burnham's spiritual journey.

Disconnection and disorientation have been themes throughout Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery. As we explore the season finale, "That Hope is You, Part 2," we also discuss the possibility of reconnection. That leads us into a conversation about isolation, technology, Star Trek V, and Star Trek Beyond. We'll also share some Star Trek news about Avery Brooks and Patrick Stewart, plus some audience question-fueled speculation about the state of holo and synth rights in the 32nd century.
BLACK ALERT! Next week, we're doing an overview of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 and we want to hear what YOU would like us to discuss. Are there themes or ideas we missed? Do you take issue with something we said? Do you have a question about the season? Hailing frequencies are open! Send it all to GospelTrekPodcast@gmail.com!

It's the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Discovery Season 3! Episode 12, "There is a Tide..." has us talking about respect, betrayal, apples, and even Die Hard! We also cover the limits of Osyraa's offer and how her bid for restoration echoes that of Gul Dukat in Deep Space Nine, bringing us into a conversation--with help from Chadra Prescod Weinstein (see below)--about repentance, atonement, and Yom Kippur. Indeed "There is a Pride" that gets in the way of repentance and atonement. And we even have an audience question about sentient holograms! "What is the nature of your ethical dilemma?"

As we end 2020—a year a lot of us would have rather spent in a holo program—we explore Season 3, Episode 11 of Star Trek: Discovery, “Su’Kal,” and the lessons we can learn about facing our realities from some of Star Trek’s holo program episodes in TNG and Deep Space Nine. We’ll also talk about honoring the elderly, the importance of grounding rituals, and a really cool Star Trek-themed jazz album that is a perfect soundtrack for New Year’s Eve. All that, plus more Star Trek news and an audience question about Q await! Computer, begin program.

Star Trek: Discovery, Season 3, Episode 10, "Terra Firma, Part 2" gives us a lot to talk about! We cover Carl and the big reveal (which Kevin predicted last episode), and discuss Philippa's relationship with Michael and how she has been changed by her time in the Prime Universe. On that note, we talk about the idea that redemption is possible for everyone in the Star Trek universe and the big and small ways redemption happens in our lives. We also share some Star Trek news and an audience question that has us wondering what species we are!

In this final week of Advent, we reflect on the surviving we have all had to endure this past year and we recall with Star Trek: Discovery's Dr. Hugh Culber that surviving can become living again. On an Advent night that brings the "Christmas Star" to our skies, it's time once again to look up. We are not alone.

Human. Data learns a great deal about what it means to be human in his life, but he distills it so well in "Data's Day." His description of the interior existence of humanity not only tells us we are more than our DNA, but indicates the essential elements of how we become more fully human. These elements are not unlike the way Jesus grew and when we contemplate the full humanity of his incarnation, we can understand more of the Divinity available to ours.

Cosmic thoughts. Sometimes, they can make God seem distant--especially in our pain and loneliness. But just as Kirk says that God is "right here" in the "human heart," so Advent reminds us that God is near, sharing in our suffering and loving us as we are.

So many things are going on in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3, Episode 5, "Die Trying" that we had to make the show longer--and we still didn't get to everything! But everyone is talking about the appearance of the USS Nog, the Eisenberg Class vessel that serves as a tribute to Deep Space Nine's Nog, Aron Eisenberg, who we lost last year. So, we thought we'd devote our main story to remembering Aron and paying tribute to Nog's finest hour. We also talk about the possibility of Leonard Nimoy's hand coming to Boston and answer an audience question about salty speech in Star Trek.

Tim flies the ship this week! He was inspired by DSC's Mary Wiseman to come up with the theme for today's show: seeking healing relationships. Again, Kevin's mic had issues, but we had no issues finding a lot to discuss--from the future of Kathryn Janeway (and "big news" about Doug Jones) to our thoughts on Klingon hair care! More seriously, we take a look at the season finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks, "No Small Parts," and take a look back at Seasons 1 and 2 of Star Trek: Discovery in preparation for next week's premiere of Season 3. This will take us into topics such as #NotMyTrek, unity in the Federation (and the Body of Christ), and what it's like to relapse into old habits (especially of bad religion). Plus, we'll get into a bit of minutia about the TOS episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?" with this week's audience question.

We are one episode away from the season finale of Star Trek: Lower Decks and the premier of Season Three of Star Trek: Discovery! Join us as we talk about the best Lower Decks episode yet, Season 1, Episode 9, "Crisis Point." We'll also share news about Star Trek Online and some potential real-life Star Trek tech. Plus, we'll answer an audience question for both Kevin and Tim! Our main story, of course, is a discussion of Saru, searching for understanding of the character as he searches to find himself.

This week, we're talking about Season 1, Episode 8 of Star Trek Lower Decks, "Veritas," plus some Star Trek news about films, books, and a casting choice for the ages. For our main story, we pick up where we left off with Star Trek: Discovery's "New Eden" and ask if it really makes sense to combine religions into one. And what does Pike peek? Or, of what does he give us a peek? It's a bit of both and dovetails nicely with a note on last week's episode and an audience question about Christ figures. Oh! And also, it's the 33rd anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation! Happy Anniversary, TNG!

With apologies for Kevin's audio quality (he didn't know his mic had issues), we hope you'll find the content worth sticking around for as we continue our discussion of religion in Star Trek: Discovery! This time, we're exploring the second episode of Season 2, "New Eden" and how it connects to the way religion has been presented in Star Trek to this point. Of course, we'll also dive into Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 1, Episode 7, "Much Ado About Boimler," along with an audience question about the book of Revelation and how you can be the captain of your own starship! (Sort of.)

Tim is back!! And in this episode, we'll talk about our Star Trek Day experiences, as well as some Captain Proton news. We'll then discuss the sixth Lower Decks episode, "Terminal Provocations," before we get into our main story, beginning a discussion of how religion is presented and discussed in Star Trek: Discovery. In particular, we'll look at Michael Burnham's dedication to pure naturalism in light of Vulcan mysticism.

Welcome! It's our inaugural episode, in which Kevin and Tim introduce themselves and the podcast and talk Star Trek news and the fate of Kurtzman Trek. We also discuss the first three episodes of Lower Decks and answer the question that gives the episode its title: What is the Gospel According to Star Trek? In answering that question, Kevin also takes listeners on a walk through his book, The Gospel According to Star Trek: The Original Crew.
