The couple welcomed their second daughter in 2002, and Tina devoted the next 18 years to raising and homeschooling the girls. Along the way – as she gained experience and knowledge, and as time allowed – she became a home education advocate as well, beginning in 2013 with the creation of her free homeschool materials database, The Homeschool Resource Roadmap, and a Facebook group that grew to over 6,000 members. As she continues to curate The Roadmap, she also continues counseling current and prospective homeschooling parents around the country, and she wrote 8 Great Smarts for Homeschoolers, published by Moody, in 2021. Also in 2021, she opened – with a friend – The Homeschool Loft, a parent resource center based in her community. Through The Loft, Tina and her colleague offer one-on-one support, book clubs, and seminars to current and prospective homeschoolers in their area, and extend their reach via a podcast, The Homeschool Loftcast. About Tina: Tina Hollenbeck is a former public school teacher who aimed for her time in the system to build relationships with immigrant teens and help them master use of the English language. In 2001, she and her husband Jeff were blessed with the birth of their first daughter, which immediately changed her calling and brought her home. The couple welcomed their second daughter in 2002, and Tina devoted the next 18 years to raising and homeschooling the girls. Along the way – as she gained experience and knowledge, and as time allowed – she became a home education advocate as well, beginning in 2013 with the creation of her free homeschool materials database, The Homeschool Resource Roadmap, and a Facebook group that grew to over 6,000 members. As she continues to curate The Roadmap, she also continues counseling current and prospective homeschooling parents around the country, and she wrote 8 Great Smarts for Homeschoolers, published by Moody, in 2021. Also in 2021, she opened – with a friend – The Homeschool Loft, a parent resource center based in her community. Through The Loft, Tina and her colleague offer one-on-one support, book clubs, and seminars to current and prospective homeschoolers in their area, and extend their reach via a podcast, The Homeschool Loftcast. Tina’s husband is a trainer for a large corporation based in northeast Wisconsin and also owns a missions-mobilizing ministry, MissionGuides Inc. The couple’s daughters are happy, healthy, productive adults, and one is also married. One of Tina’s current “projects” is learning how to appropriately and effectively parent adult children!

About Jake Ryan: He is the founder and CIO of Tradecraft Capital, which runs a macro/thesis driven crypto fund. He brings 20 years of expertise in software development to the world of crypto asset investing. Jake is also an advisor to several venture-backed startups, a mentor at Mucker Capital, an advisor at Hypothesis Ventures and a strategic advisor at Diversis Capital, a private equity firm.
Jake earned a BS in computer science from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a 1st author of published work in the field of applying artificial intelligence to network security, “Intrusion Detection with Neural Networks”, which has over 700 Google Scholar Citations.
Jake’s book, Crypto Asset Investing in the Age of Autonomy, is published by Wiley. He lives in Austin with his wife and young son.

Me: Wh… * Cough Cough YAAK!
Regal and other friends: “You idiot! You’re not supposed to inhale and hold it in! Haven’t you seen how they do it in movies?”
THE QUEST TO BE FREE
I remember as if it was yesterday.
I couldn’t wait until I turned 18 so I could smoke a cigar and choke as i held it in my lungs like an imbecile.
Well it wasn't my exact plan.
I did however want independence. From all I had heard watched and read in my nation, hitting 18 was a milestone that marked being "legal" and ready for the world.
So...
What did 18 bring for me?
• I could cast my first vote: No I was not politically aware, savvy or even interested. • Rent an apartment: No money for that. • Gamble Buy a Scratch ticket: NO. Did that as a kid for an uncle and it seemed lame to lose money for a pipe dream. • Marry Someone: Wasn't even in my UNIVERSE.
You get the point. I had some new opportunities as I entered the promised land of 18 (sarcasm).
OR
PARTY TIME?
I could finally go legally to a nightclub to find it was the same as when I snuck in underage with fake ID.
This brings up a good question:
What does it mean to be independent?
Does it mean do whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want and with whomever you want? Is it a world with no rules or boundaries just unbridled freedom?
Well I think it’s quite the opposite, I think it’s knowing what to do that is right and having the humility to know that without the Source of life as your foundation, you cannot skillfully execute what lies ahead in your life.

YOUNG STEVE POOL
As far back as I can remember I was fascinated by the weather report. I'd be glued to the TV screen watching a young guy with impeccable hair named Steve Pool. Steve never seemed to age.
They say "black don't crack" and I think he embodied that notion.
Steve was my go to voice of reason and I trusted his insight on weather and atmospheres to navigate the fickle and changing Pacific Northwest Weather. Though Steve failed many times, his smile and assurance that he seemed to know what he was doing, brought me back like a sucker week after week.

Y'all ready to win?
Our basketball coach asked us as we were entering into our first real game.
"I guess!" my team exclaimed with a lack luster enthusiasm. Who we were as a team (if you could call us that) was a group of unlikely candidates that didn't know who we were.
A LITTLE JELLY?
So much internal jealousy and turmoil was present in our makeup. Why? I know personally I didn't grow up with the rest of the guys and was seen as an outsider. In particular there was one kid that had it out for me.
Alas, our coach said he wanted us to win. He was always patient with us in practice, encouraging us to have the fundamentals down so that when it was game time we could execute.
Many guys were selfish during practice and making fun of team members (ahem: me) that weren't all that skilled. So when it came to game time, I honestly didn't trust my team.
Yet our coach was standing there and saying he believed in us and that we could win the game.
And guess what because of his belief and encouragement, we pulled it out and won our first game. Our coach wanted us to prosper.
He looked past our insecurities, frailties and shortcomings and saw winners.
And though that was a very trying and challenging time of my life, I am thankful for a coach that wanted me to prosper.

WILL YOU BE THE FIRST?
When the first Nintendo Entertainment Center was released, millions of children began immediately bargaining, begging, and negotiating with their moms and dads in hopes of convincing them to buy them the game system.
Parents and children alike endured massive lines in malls and Toy's R Us Stores (RIP) looking for that box so they may hopefully emerge victorious. Parents were cutting off other parents in line, pushing, shoving, and snatching, some even offering to pay way over price to obtain the system.
What was so special? Why was this system causing such frenzy? I'll tell you why: SCARCITY. They made it seem like the system was scarce.
Even the first commercials of 1985(version) teased kids with the questions:
"Will you be the one...?
Will you be the first to..."
I remember gazing at the commercial, my heart palpitating as I began to salivate in imagining myself being the kid in the commercial. Those emotions of excitement and false euphoria were wiped away with worry that maybe I wouldn't be the one. Our family wasn't really rich but I knew this was a worthy investment (smile).
IT ARRIVES
I remember my parents presenting us with this new game system. It was the world to my older sister and I. We had a system to be able to play video games! We were tremendously overjoyed and thankful that we had scored the new system! The pursuit had paid off.

RUNNING EAGLES
Middle school is one of the most silliest concepts I have ever experienced. You take a group of young people that are beginning to go through puberty and put them in a place where they are herded by age. Then you don't have the grades they receive go on their transcripts and academic records so they are essentially in academic limbo? Not a good move.
What does the combination of all these factors make? Well I'd say chaos! At least that was my biased experience. You might think Middle School was wonderful but this is my blog (smile).
AI INVASION (ARTIFICIAL INFLUENCE)
The hottest brands on the planet of apparel in our world were emblazoned their logos on starter sports jackets parka style. University of Las Vegas Nevada (UNLV), Los Angeles Raiders and Georgetown Hoya's were very popular because they must have had brilliant marketing teams.
Why am I telling you this? Well...I didn't like red as a color. No particular reason I just thought it was too loud. My dad and I were avid Philadelphia Eagles fans. We were locked into their football games rain snow or shine, when a game was on we found a way to get it even if we walked into a Tavern (seemed things were much laxed as far as kids being able to watch games where alcohol was served). We were diehards as fans. So what did my dad decide to gift me with? An original Eagles parka jacket!
Holy Grail or Holy Fail?
When that thing arrived... Wow! Talk about role reversal. The insignificant invisible kid became super visible.
Kids stopping me in the hall asking me about where I got it from (he ordered it from out of state and it took weeks to secure it (came from far) no internet.
All of a sudden I had influence. Kids were walking with me in the hallway and surrounding me. The little crush I had that had previously ignored me was begging to wear the jacket.
This my friends is a sample of what I call false influence. In school and translating to the adult world the currency is popularity. Yet with all the clamoring and noise that happened in my life, what remained was shallow material obsession that would fade as soon as the newer shiny object would appear.

THE DAY I WAS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
What's your purpose?
She asked me with a furrowed brow and intense eyes that could pierce any type of metal. Forget Superman's heat seeking vision! This vision was HOT!
It was as if flames of blue magma were spewing out of her eyes, glasses hanging down on her nose.
I sheepishly replied: To serve God and love him?
THAT'S EVERYBODY'S PURPOSE Boy!
Looking at me with intensity and speaking with an urgency I had only heard sports coaches and elderly people speak with!*
Now What's your PURPOSE? What are you here to do?
I didn't have an answer! She relented and shook her head with disgust like this is something you have to know.
How did I not know the answer?
What Mother Mullen (an elderly woman of God that was a tremendous prayer warrior and had such clarity and insight from the LORD on how to live a righteous life) had asked me forever revolutionized my life.
This simple probing question (What's your PURPOSE?) was directly linked to me and I had to answer this particular question because my life is designed to assist others in gaining clarity and confidence so that they can answer the question regarding their own lives.

It's Not Easy Being Green
Andre! You need to do a more neater job with cutting on the dotted line.
But... Teacher, I DID CUT ON THE LINE! It didn't work!
She shook her head in frustration thinking I was just deflecting, blame on an instrument and not wanting to do the work right.
WHO IS THIS GUY ANYWAY?
Yet the guy Drew next to me his was impeccably cut. His work looked so crisp. Everyone in class seemed as if they executed the assignment with perfection.
When we would glue things, mine would have glue on the paper smeared.
Why did I have to be left handed anyway? Maybe I wasn't cut out to be creative. That was for girls and weak guys!
And the Criminal of the ____ award goes to....?
For years I would shy from believing I was creative. I thought I was just clown that could make up great lies. Is there a prize for the greatest ability to turn D's into B's and E's into B's on Report Cards?
What about pretending you are your own guardian and disguising your voice when your school calls to inform your parents of your misbehavior?
Crickets
Oh yeah! That's only for criminals.
STOP BEING GREEN
Well many years later I was enlightened to the reality that God made me extremely creative. I am made in the image of THE CREATOR and so are you. So there is no need to be GREEN with ENVY of Others! Walk in your own uniqueness.

“…Whatever You Like…? ImaniIzzi: Ever since I was born, I've been trained to serve you. Prince Akeem: Yes, I know this. But I would like to know about you. What do you like to do? ImaniIzzi: Whatever you like. Prince Akeem: What kind of music do you like? ImaniIzzi: Whatever kind of music you like. Prince Akeem: Look, I know what I like. And I know that you know what I like because you were trained to know what I like, but I would like to know what you like. For instance, do you have a favorite food? ImaniIzzi: Yes! Prince Akeem: Good! What is your favorite food? ImaniIzzi: Whatever food you like. Though this is a hilarious scene that I watched the other evening from “Coming To America”, it’s really quite sad when I think about a time in my life where I was just like this young lady: ignorant of myself. She had no knowledge of who exactly she was, what she had to offer in their relationship, what are the areas of interest and joy for her, her skills, gifting, calling, assignment. She solely was out to be whoever the prince wanted her to be. FLASHBACK Graduating from High School was super anti climactic. The greatest highlight was some people in our class led the charge to rush the stage before it was even officially over. We were “over” hearing the long supposedly inspirational speech that anyone seldom will remember. Upon graduation when I was asked what exactly was my goal, priority, dream and ambition, my answer was based upon what I thought would be acceptable to my parents, and those other adults in society that had opinions of whom it was. I was to become a SOFTWARE ENGINEER. I remember coming out of high school stating that I would be a software engineer. I planned to ace exams, get heavily involved in, physics, calculus, statistics and software development. Though I was a mediocre high school student for the majority of High School, college was where I would become the ambitious “A” student. Why? Because I saw my uncle excel at his profession as a software engineer and because of his certainty about his vocation and calling, I adopted it as my own. REALITY CHECK As I enrolled in college and sat in math classes it was like having all the oxygen immediately sucked out of the room daily. My instructors were like a lineup of comedy characters. At least that is what I imagined them as to maintain my sanity. One looked just like Jack Palance (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Palance) playing his classic character “Curly” in “City Slickers” when I would ask him a question, he would stare off in the distance taking long pauses. Another instructor was like a black version of “The B.R.A.I.N” from Pinky and the Brain (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f4/PinkyandtheBrain.TheBrain.png) as a matter of fact he spoke just like him as well. No smiles only seriousness as if his mathematical genius was his instrument for world domination. This is how I snickered my way into failure in these courses. FUTILE ATTEMPTS I was extraordinarily drained, as I wrote html code and attempted my hand at C, C+ and a few other languages, I was not finding any joy in doing this. I had no vision for school and after high school I failed out of classes in the summer and took the first almost 2 years of Community College to party and just keep my parents happy that I was enrolled in school. LOCKDOWN After I was born again by the LORD and he subdued me with his love placing new vision in my heart to really serve him and learn his ways, I asked him to show me who I was. One of my peers invited me to come and volunteer chaplain at a juvenile detention facility because she needed an extra hand leading bible studies. I looked at her like she was crazy. Her request to me was nuts because I barely was grasping anything in the Bible, I only navigated by the Table of Contents and my confidence was low in that arena. I had just gotten a version of the Bible I could understand shortly before she asked me. She said “Just be honest when they

It seemed like I could jump rope forever as a young man. Now I was struggling. Father of 3 and ready to scream. But alas there was the coach standing by my side telling me to push through it. When I heard the encouragement, I pushed myself, looked silly but completed the task. There was some reserved strength. I saw them entering the plane as they were waiting on the results of the slot machines they were playing. You see this was Las Vegas Nevada and the airport had opportunities for people to "get lucky" prior to boarding their flight. I hate losing money. Never have I been enamored with the fantasy that I could put money in a machine and out would come a fortune and the end of all my troubles. The first time I ate spinach my aunt almost killed me: that's another story though. But betting on a number seemed foolish to me. I would go to the store and get a ticket for one of my uncles. He would have the scratch tickets and numbers played and would always lose more than he gained. Can a job provide the security that you need to finally hit that jackpot? 7th Grade Tycoon? Don't sell your baseball cards! If there is one thing I can tell you to hold onto, it's your baseball and basketball cards! My 7th grade teacher was adamant in relaying this truth to us young guys as we gathered in our own huddles looking at our newly acquired baseball and basketball cards. What do you mean? We asked. "I was able to buy my first house with just selling my cards off do collectors. They were that valuable." Our eyes widened with thinking we could be holding onto our own personal lottery tickets. AND THEN WHAT HAPPENED? I would love to say as a result of that heartfelt emphatic advice, I took my savings and plowed it into early shares of Microsoft stock and cashed out right as I graduated from high school. On the contrary, it took some time for me to grasp what exactly was the value of investing. THE ORACLE? Neo walked into the building with trepidation in anticipation of meeting this enigmatic figure that was spoken of to him with not much detail. "The oracle" as they were called was to possess some very important information that this young man needed to proceed on his mission. If you haven't seen the classic first Matrix (and only Matrix in my opinion, let’s pretend the others never happened) you have missed out a jewel of a story. But that's for another time. BACK IN THE DAY WHEN I WAS YOUNG... In High School I had a strange amount of interests. On the outside to everyone else it was rap music, Tupac, Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde. On the inside I had hidden interests that people didn't understand. John P Kee, Tony Bennett, Wynton Marsalis and Miles Davis. I also loved falling asleep listening to Larry King on talk radio since my earliest years. GUMBO INTEREST In this closet cultured interest, I also was drawn to the Oracle of Omaha. Mr. Warren Buffet seemed to catch my attention by his non showman demeanor when interviewed and in public eye. Here was a man that seemed to have amassed a great fortune yet he drove a truck, had a house (and plenty of other toys) but he was not interested in displaying toys to people. Rather he tried to give hints of his knowledge in his annual meetings for shareholders. Now I am not a fan of all Mr. Buffet's beliefs yet I do know he has results when it comes to investing. I was in college and broke and between the noodles and going to Red Robin with a friend and having them order fries so that I could keep the "bottomless action going on", this was my weekly diet. JUST READ THE DIRECTIONS MAN! I would try with all my heart to follow the recipe of the Ramen noodles on the packet but mine would either end up too soggy (yuck) or too hard (bleh!!!). My older sister on the other hand could boil them to perfection. I don't understand what made it so difficult for me to adhere to the recipe I actually think my lack of attention to detail derailed my ramen noodle feast hopes. It seems that there are services that lack clarity in the equipping of the church for the work of the ministry. THERE MUST BE MORE THAN THIS Are we to be satisfied with meeting frequently to sing, shake each others hands, give hugs, hear a brief inspiring word and go home? Or were we designed to do more. I am as guilty as anyone being someone that serves in ecclesiastical ministry I have to evaluate why we gather. How are we making an impact? How are we making a difference? DOES GOD EVER GET BORED? Ouch! Why did you pinch me? I asked my mother this questions with as much respect as a 7 year old kid stuck in a hot church could have. Baffled by why this always happened to me when the preacher man got up to say his words out of his giant book. MUSIC GETS ME UP Typically I could hang through the songs. There were drums and clapping of hands (at some of the congregations we attended). So at least the movement kept me on my feet even if my mother did make me stand. * (Thanks mom I love you). "You keep falling asleep (she replied with a forceful whisper). Now get up and go get some water splash it on your face so that you stay awake." I tried the method she suggested and it was of no effect. It's almost as if the heat and fatigue of the speaker pushed me into deeper slumber. I would only wake up once the speaker was at the closing word because they seemed to get a little more animated and people would then seem to agree with the speaker. CUT HIS SOME SLACK WILL YA? You see I was probably like most kids my age. Put in a position to sit through a church service with things I didn't understand and music that was different than what was on the radio and shiny television. I had no idea what the church was for and why we were to come to this building weekly to engage in rituals, traditions and ceremonies. I thought surely God has to think this is boring just like I did. Maybe I could talk to him in my dreams and still get credit for being present? A firm revelation of the identity of the church was what I was lacking. Smile) It's So Hard To Say Goodbye As I aged, I expressed the gluttony habit by going to The Old Country Buffett restaurant with one of my peers for years through college and after. STARVING ARTIST? Wow! It's like the whole history of this part of the city is laid out in this mural. I said exuberantly to this young artist. I was fascinated with the work of this young artist. She had successfully completed a project she was commissioned to paint by this educational institution. She had worked on similar projects overseas. To see someone applying their expertise to an area that created value for others was energizing. Yet as a child she was told to pursue something that would "pay the bills". THE PESSIMIST,REALIST OR DREAMER? Look, I'm not one that sings the utopian song of "follow your passions and the money will follow you." I'm more like: follow the problems and apply your gift to solving those problems. IT'S CHILD'S PLAY I really am going to be a superhero when I grow up! Jonathan was emphatic as a 5 year old could be as he spoke to his mother. He sincerely had the expectation that he was to grow up and save the world using all his powers for good. He would be renowned and respected in adulthood. Why? Because Jonathan have seen a dream where it was a reality for him. It was his destiny. REALITY WRECKED? Jonathan's mother had made the mistake of speaking to him in a rather cutesy condescending tone as he told her his life ambition. She did what most any good parent would do: She thought to laugh heartily and passively remind the child that it was fantasy that would never materialize but was ok (at the time for Jonathan to believe). Jonathan needed to understand that being a 5 year old was the only time he was able to entertain this dream of his to be a superhero. UNLESS YOU ARE LIKE... Well dreaming is not only for the children of the world. Jesus reminds us that unless we are like a child (*Child like NOT CHILD-ISH), we cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. "Why is alcohol used as the cover for anything that is said from the heart without a filter? Oh I get it, maybe there is too much fear hindering being the real you. Maybe a person prefers to have a shield of fermented substance that has invaded their system (with their consent) that turned them from highly respectable to babbling idiot. They put ice in my track shoes! Anticipation and nervousness filled my heart as I ran to the lockeroom to change into my uniform and shoes for my first track meet. Low and behold the pranksters on my team had filled my shoes with ice. Our coach is already irritated with us and how we are procrastinating to get on the bus. We rush on the bus and there I was with a choice either forfeit the race or run with wet shoes! The gun goes off for the race and bang! I was off like lightning I took off full speed dusting the kid that had placed in state meets on a couple of occasions. I clearly was lapping so many of the runners I knew that this race was way easier than it was in practice. Then came lap 2. Out of nowhere came this wall that smacked me dead in my face. I felt its impact but had to break through it. Much to my chagrin as I was getting up from hitting this (invisible wall), all the other experienced runners dashed by me. Now I was neck and neck with the slowest gentleman. I had my teammates in the stands laughing and telling me to run so I wouldn't lose out and have some semblance of school pride. I squeaked desperately past the gentleman in last place and made it! Cold, wet feet, embarrassed and exhausted I went past the finish line to collapse into the stands for water. There you have it. Real runners had the knowhow of pacing themselves. Me on the other hand I took my speed as an advantage and had a rude awakening. Maybe you are like me back then, maybe not. I got laid off. Walter spoke with such despondency as he announced to his group of peers how he was in disbelief over the situation. 27 hard years of my life just gone down the drain. A TON OF BRICKS Every person in the room could feel the somber reality of how crushing and demoralizing it must have been for him as a man to now face this fact. HEY KID: SHUT YOUR TRAP! I was younger at the time probably like 22 years old. Freshly apprehended into the LORD's love, I had witnessed not only Walter but many older gentlemen around me go through what seemed like the gymnastic exercise of layoffs, downsizings, cutbacks and firings. Maybe you could start your own business! I said with a tinge of optimism. People looked at me as if I had desecrated a temple of the living God. "Well...it was just a thought, I have heard you say how you have hated your job for as long as I have known you. With your experience and skillset maybe you could find an opportunity that could..." I was silenced and told by older gentleman in the room: "It's not that easy!" Could it be worth about the same amount of risk that he faced in going to a job he hated for over 20 years of his life? Was it worth the effort and difficulty to at least attempt to forge something for himself that could open a new chapter and give him greater control of his destiny? Possibly. Here we have it. A clashing of paradigms, Many of us are quick to identify how we unhappy about things occurring in our lives. I thought to myself. I'll do whatever he wants me to do. My religious sentiments were crushed as a I heard him preaching and delved into the passages he cited. Going home by myself I searched the scriptures for how God had dealt with others he had raised up and sure enough he gave them the autonomy to plan their lives. I thought I had done good preparation and had a hype man "Regal" as campaign manager beside me to pull it off. Why was my speech so lifeless? Why did I feel like a shrinking pygmy in front of the same peers that I sat next to in class? How was it that I was at a place now where: guys and girls that I played jokes on our teachers with were now seeming like a hostile crowd with lifeless faces? THE NATURAL While Jackson on the other hand was poise, funny and confident. I had known Jackson since Middle School and was always impressed by Jacksons handle on how to make us all laugh during the most mundane of class periods. SOMEBODY HAND ME THE REMOTE PLEASE I walked the hallways of high school with a perpetual mute button on my mouth. It was even said by a young lady that was mutual friends with my best man in my wedding (as we were all grown and out of high school) my buddy Slim said: You know Andre is doing... This young lady exclaimed? "Andre!" That guy doesn't have a voice!" I don't ever remember him having a voice!" When Slim told me this I felt a pit in my stomach as I reflected on High School. Because what she stated rang true. You see in High School I didn't take the hints and discover my gift. I was trying to be like others "Basketball Player, Track Runner" Yet a chance meeting took me to a youth entrepreneurial program and accelerated me to do Corporate Videos and meet one of the world’s wealthiest entrepreneurs. You should stop being so selfish! How will you ever learn if you don't teach it? I sat with a face of resistance and self doubt as my peer challenged me to get out of my comfort zone. "But that doesn't even make sense! I'm not an expert...! I can't even..." I replied with a strange sense that my weak excuses were ultimately going to lead me to having to yield to her perspective. And ultimately they did because it wasn't her voice speaking but the voice of the LORD prompting her to give me a chance to take what I was learning and put it to use. THIS GUY'S A ROOKIE! Here I was young and afraid pulled out of my comfort zone called into the fray of dealing with those in distressed situations: incarcerated many without hope. About to learn a valuable lesson: I don't have to come with the answers but come with ears to listen and asking more questions. At least that's what they called 2008. Both my wife and I were laid off from our jobs in the 2008-09 times the market dipped. We are having our first child and the market was in shambles. This is so stupid! Why are we even doing this? I hate my name! I want a normal name like "Deshawn" or "Khalil!" BORN TO FAIL? His mother was in prison. His father was murdered by cops in an altercation. He was trying to uphold a heritage of gang affiliation and as only a middle school student. My assignment, (my volunteer assignment) was to help this group of phenomenal young people rediscover their personal worth. I aimed to help them contribute to society and make an impact. Other students in the class were talking as usual. No one was interested it seemed. They previously had made fun of this young man's name because the first portion of his name seemed out of place in today's casual setting. "Alright everyone pay attention as I read this first name meaning. Sir: 1. A name used formally for a knight or a baron. 2. A title given to one in authority or having rank. 3. Title given to Nobility or a ruler that exercises authority and influence over a territory. The class sat in silence with mouths opened in shock and disbelief as the presence of the LORD filled the room. Now I had their attention and this was only the first part of his first name! "I saw it! I don't know why I was watching it but it got my attention. It kinda pulled me in!" He was a large Samoan young man. He played sports and was from the streets. Yet when I was standing before the class asking about who had viewed the Royal Wedding that was on late night he stated that he had intentionally tuned in for a rather long length of time. Other students in this classroom full of seemingly "tough" young men and women had tuned into the royal wedding of people that on a normal day they could care less about. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW THE QUEEN These young people weren't living in the kingdom or under the rule of Queen Elizabeth so why the interest? Mini Me? Mini You? Have you ever felt small? Like I mean really small? Like Shaquille O Neal standing next to Nate Robinson small? It's definitely not a good feeling to feel outclassed, outmatched or under prepared when you’re about to face an opponent. PLAYING BASKET-BALL I felt that way when I had tried out for the basketball team. All the other guys it seemed had massive height, muscle or acclaim that was before them from other coaches and students that had spoke on their abilities. Here I was the outsider, coming from another neighborhood, not playing on the same league teams with the same coaches and teams as the other kids. In my preparation I felt underprepared and out of my league. This is how the 10 spies sent into the land during the time of Joshua and Caleb felt as the saw the giants that were living in the land of Promise. 10 spies were petrified and had a low self concept that put them at the mercy of their own inferior imaginations. "I just want to be a regular person!" He said it with such certainty and he looked at me with eyes that seemed to exclaim: "That's good enough right?" This time in my life I was running an after school-learning center. So many children came through it was an honor to serve them and hear their hopes dreams and aspirations. I'll never forget Juan's answer. Juan's answer was indicative of his real view of life: REGULAR people get left alone. • Regular jobs, • Regular pay, • Regular family and • Regular house, • Regular car, • Regular health and • Regular social life • Someday get a regular pension • Or regular retirement package • And take a regular cruise • Hit the golf course • Or crotchet club with your regular pals. YUCK!!!!! It was as if Juan's statement burned in my mind for a long time. His words resonated with me because I knew many kids unfortunately feel the same thing. Aim for average. I don't want to see anyone be a regular person. Each person should discover or rediscover their assignment and know exactly why they were placed on the planet. BIG REVEAL Rooms full of people are draining to me. Most people probably wouldn't guess that I am a highly functional introvert. What on Earth that means? I have no idea! What it means to me is that I try to push myself out of my comfort zone on frequent occasions to talk to people and engage on levels that make me nervous conversationally. Being aware that I seem to draw more strength being alone, I realize that interdependence upon others is most healthy for me to grow into the person that God designed me to be. If I am not acutely aware of the people around me, where they are emotionally and what I am giving out through my interactions with them, I can cause severe damage. WHAT'S INSIDE OF YOU? Summertime is for leveling up on my favorite video game! Surely it’s why summer vacation was designed, to give kids like me a break from the prison classroom called the schoolhouse. Finally I would be able to play video games until my eyelids couldn't resist the weight of heaviness brought on by endless gameplay junk food consumption and the inevitable crash that comes from high intakes of sugar after the rush. Well as I got older and had to take on my responsibilities namely being married with 3 children, I realized that time was made for production and not merely consumption. If I'm going to be somewhat responsible as an adult, I must measure my output and value contribution to society. Is my life producing a result that will leave an outstanding outcome? Will I be one that plants a tree so to speak or vineyard which offspring and generations can feed off of? What about my current status Am I average, good, great or phenomenal as the great Eric Thomas says? WE NEVER ASK Hard questions are usually the questions we avoid asking ourselves because we know the answers will probably demand change from us. IN THIS EPISODE We examine ourselves according to scripture and find out just how much output is coming out of our lives? What we consume is definitely connected with what we produce. What say you? "Andre Head's up!" My teammate yelled at me as he tossed me the football. Low and behold, I finally was wide open and caught the ball. This was my moment! I evaded defenders and spotted a wide open pathway for me to make a touchdown. Racing down the field with pride, speed and agility, even ignoring my teammates as they were yelling at me trying to get my attention. Surely it was their enthusiasm in seeing me take control! They chanted my name “Andre! Andre!” “Andre!”Surely there would be plenty of time for celebration once I scored the run. When I hit the end zone I saw the opposing team laughing hysterically and holding my hands up like I was a champion and my teammates with their heads hung in shame. I had scored for the other team! DISASTER! Needless to say I wasn't cut out to shine in football. I was mediocre at best. Who knows maybe with deliberate practice and coaching I could have improved. ON THE OTHER HAND… Throughout my childhood I had indicators though that I had a gift and ability to speak and people would listen. Everything from teachers asking me to read a passage publicly in elementary and asking me to continue reading to the embarrassment of me as my peers got angry. I hated and tried to hide what was a natural gift because I didn’t understand the value of standing out rather than blending in. HOW ABOUT YOU? What is your God given gift?
