It's a kicker, but just because something/someone/somewhere is FAMILIAR does not mean that it's safe or good for you.
This episode will walk you through how to see past the 'familiar' and how to tell whether or not something is really, truly, safe.
Spoiler: it has to do with being willing to acknowledge your anger!

There's nothing like defensiveness. We've all been on one side or the other of it, and oh, what an uncomfortable, escalating mess it can be!
Make no mistake, while defensiveness and boundaries aim at the same target (safety) they come from wildly different places, yielding profoundly different effects.
Two guesses which one I'd recommend!

Anger isn't a fire that will burn you... it's the fire of a lamp that shines a light on what needs tending.
I adore when my clients move into anger -- it tells me they're doing the big, down in the trenches work of healing from the ground up. They're realizing their worth and what actions they need to take to ensure the people around them recognize their gifts too.

Boundaries are compromised because we don’t think we already have what we need and/or deserve. Wrapped up in feelings of unworthiness and fear
Internal boundaries compromised in this way look like addiction to anything: shopping, tv, exercise, substances, social media, excessive sleep...Anything that you use to grasp outwards and cover up and/or ignore the Truth of who you are.
External boundaries compromised in this way look like: staying in relationships that are abusive physically and/or emotionally, looking for someone else to complete you, people pleasing for fear of rejection, choking back no because of fear of consequence.

Learning to see boundaries as a home is one of my favorite images to help folks take some of the charge out of boundary setting. You wouldn't allow everyone into the same spaces in your home, and neither should there be the same boundary for everyone in your life.

Friend, Mark Breedon is a breath of fresh air in the stuffy world of 'go hard or go home' fitness services and products.
Rather, Mark encourages his clients to do what THEY enjoy doing, in a timeline that makes sense for THEM. He's well aware that health looks different on everyone, and is focused on improving fitness over aesthetics so that women can feel confident being the badass they are.
I so enjoyed having this conversation, and hope you get just as much out of it as I did!

Your mind will fool you, despite your best efforts.
Your body CANNOT lie. It does not lie.
In fact, your body gives you up to the second, real-time feedback about what's going on. Partially because of the makeup of your nervous system, and partially because of the interaction of your own electromagnetic field with those around you (the earth, people, animals, etc).
In this episode, learn which 5 situations of physical awareness will help you unlock the door to the most effective boundaries, and why.

The supplement world is rough. It's tough to tell what's worth it, what's not, and if you're really just flushing that money down the toilet.
I've yet to find reliable information regarding an effective dose of resveratrol -- and so I dove into the land of research and surfaced with waayyy more info than I bargained for (resources are down at the end of the show notes.)
And I'm passing that bounty along to you.
Listen in to learn if there really is any evidence behind the hype of resveratrol, proposed mechanisms for its effect, and the final answer when it comes to dosing.
Full disclosure/Conflict of Interest: I maintain online medicinaries, and do sell supplements through them.

Fall is the season when the energy is returning to its source: if you're a plant, the energy is going back down to the earth. If you're a chicken, you're not laying so many eggs so your feathers can regenerate. If you're a human, it's time to get in touch with YOUR source.

The more able you are to be in your body and ride out the sensations associated with difficult emotions, the more easily those sensations will shift. As they shift, you'll be in a position to make CHOICES about what comes next.
On the other hand, if you let those rough emotions get the better of you, and try to ignore them, or distract yourself out of them, you'll be living by default.

Self-compassion is a term I toss out without thinking about what it really means. Luckily, someone asked me precisely what I mean when I say that, so I'm sharing with you today exactly what I mean when I use the phrase.
In essence: extend yourself the care you would someone else you saw struggling. Give yourself the benefit of the doubt, and trust that you CAN and WILL find your way through.
Self-Compassion is the base of growth mindset. Even though it's hard right now, hang in and you WILL get where you're trying to go.

Sometimes, these are 100% valid and necessary coping mechanisms (listen to hear when).

I had the great fortune to be a guest on Martin Medeiros' podcast, The Persuasion Lab!
Here's what it's all about:
"While negotiation is often thought of as a purely mental effort, the truth is that if you haven't taken care of your body, your mind won't be at its sharpest. Which means you're in danger of not being able to get your needs met. Learn how to keep your body AND mind in tip top shape in this episode, as Martin talks with Dr. Katherine Hofmann. Dr. Hofmann is a naturopathic physician who specializes in mental health and longevity. She sheds some light on just how to stay empathic when emotions are running hot, how to use supplements and nutrition to boost your mind, and why it really does matter that you get a full night's sleep before heading to the negotiation table.

Death is something each of us comes into contact with sooner or later, whether it's our own death or the loss of someone close to us.
For Georgi Dwiggins, that contact came very, very early. And lucky for all of us, she has channeled her experiences with death into her work as a death doula.
In this episode, the incredibly thoughtful Georgi shares with us her perspective on death and dying, grief, and everything that goes along with it.
Please note, this conversation isn't morbid, but it is frank. We both speak openly about our own personal experiences with death and loss, in addition to topics like death with dignity/physician assisted suicide.
In addition, we talk about some regulations about planning for death, and none of this information should be taken as advice for your own unique situation. Seek qualified advice from an attorney and/or doctor licensed in your area.

Oh, my friend. So you're afraid of what you know must be going wrong in your body, and you're afraid to go to the doctor because surely it's cancer.
Or you spend a lot of time on the phone or messaging your doc, because, obviously they missed something and your time is NEAR.
This is health anxiety!
And, while it can serve the purpose of getting you testing and treatment sooner than later, living in a steady state of anxiety around your health can take you outside your body and leave you in a state of fairly unproductive panic.
So.
Listen up and learn how to deal with your health anxiety.

Having (and maintaining) an awareness of your inner world is just as important as being aware of what's going on in the world around you. Probably more important, actually.
The more in tune you are with your body, the better able you are to take effective action. In other words, the more you're able to perceive the signals your body provides, the more easily you can cut through the BS of your mind and act from a place of heart-centered integrity.
Aannnd, I don't know if you've noticed, but the world really needs that right about now.

Most unpleasant emotions are a call to reflect and then take effective action.
Not so with sadness.
The best you can do with grief and sadness is to simply show up and present with and for them. Which is tough because these are raw, tender emotions we'd really rather simply went away.
If you can practice sitting with sadness as you would an honored guest in your home, however, you'll save yourself a good deal of suffering that goes along with the pain sadness brings. And (you might not like this) sadness brings with it the gift of demanding a high quality of attention for healing.

This week we have a special guest: Kaitlin Schrote, Senior Research Assistant at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) Center for Women's Health.
Admittedly I am biased (we've been friends for 13 years now) but I think you'll agree that Kaitlin is an incredible wealth of information. Her work is focused on contraceptive technology effectiveness and accessibility, and includes such varied projects as gathering information about how pharmacists are prescribing birth control pills to patients in some states, length of effectiveness of IUDs (Intra-uterine devices), and ways to provide abortion services via telehealth.

Nothing shapes your reality more than the words you think and speak.
Most of us are asleep at the wheel when it comes to the words we use, rather than being aware and leveraging it to our advantage.
If you want to make the very best of your experience in this lifetime and love the life you live, there is no better place to start than intentional language!

Dealing with difficult emotions can be extra challenging. It sometimes feels like if you even acknowledge their presence, you will drown in the awfulness of it all.
Lucky for all of us, this is not true.
Emotions move and change -- and the more you welcome them in and give them space the more quickly and easily shifts in mood can occur. And the more you are not at the mercy of your emotions, but can learn from the information they have to offer.

"Integrative" is a buzzword in medicine right now -- but what does it mean, really?
In this episode I explain what my integrative approach looks like and how that relates to the conventional medical model of specialized care. Hint: mind and body are not separate. . .

This is the very heart and center of everything I'm about: emotional self sufficiency. When you are able to care for yourself emotionally, to know what your needs are, tend to them yourself, and ask for help if necessary, you are emotionally self sufficient. You are not reliant on anyone else, though you certainly enjoy community. You are not dependent on validation from outside yourself because you know and believe in all that you are. Every relationship improves, every aspect of your life stabilizes.

Do you move in the direction of ease, or do you fight 'upstream,' against your relationships, circumstance, body, job... life?
In this episode, I discuss a concept I learned through practicing craniosacral therapy, that also applies to most any area of life: moving in the direction of ease.
It is possible to minimize the day to day struggle and have a little bit of fun in the process.

Today I am talking about the difference between those surface emotions that can get the better of us and the inner wisdom that is a fail-safe guide to better and better things.
Think of it as the difference between being in a boat on the open ocean in a storm (surface emotions) or being a fishy-type animal, deep down in the depths where the water is even and still (inner wisdom).
If you experience intense emotional upset and swings, this is the episode for you!
