12 months on from a memorable Open Championship at Royal Portrush, Shane Lowry’s defence has been put on hold, due to the Global Pandemic.

In 1960, the reigning Open Champion, Gary Player set a new course record at Portmarnock Golf Club, in the first round of the Canada Cup.

Exactly 60 years later, Mr.Player joined Shane O’Donoghue for a chat about the round, his recollections and of course, the broader landscape of global golf, COVID-19 and with more than a few poignant pieces of music thrown in for good measure.

Gary Player become only the third professional to achieve the modern career Grand Slam. 9 majors in total in three decades. 160 professional wins, globally, and 9 Senior Majors. It’s the beginning of a journey of discovery featuring the game’s greats. Hale Irwin is one of the game’s greatest players, winning three US Open Championships, two US Senior Opens and became the most dominant Over 50’s golfer in history.

A star footballer in University, he was an all-round athlete with many prospects, but it was golf that suited his personality and desires best. He got his PGA Tour card straight out of college and never looked back. A fascinating man, who is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame; this interview shines a light on the man behind the wins.

Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2015, Australia’s David Graham was one of the game’s greatest golfers, emulating Ben Hogan by winning majors at Oakland Hills (1979 PGA Championship) and at storied Merion Golf Club (1981 US Open).

His win at Merion is notable by his imperious play during the final round where he hit every green in regulation, overturning a 3 stroke deficit to win by 3, in shooting a 67 and earning the praise of Hogan himself, who called to offer his congratulations.

Graham was the first Australian to win the US Open. He won 37 times as a professional, and most notably, he won on six continents, a record only shared by Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Justin Rose (winner of the 2013 US Open at Merion GC) and David Graham’s great friend and mentor, Gary Player.

This interview was recorded in March 2020, as Covid-19 was declared a global pandemic.

The interviewer is Shane O’Donoghue, who spoke to David Graham by phone from his Dallas home.
