Welcome to Eating Enlightenment!
This interview show is hosted by Jared. Jared is a former Zen monk, certified intuitive eating counselor, and creator of the Eating Enlightenment app.
Have you ever found yourself reaching for that extra cookie even when you're not hungry? Or using food as a coping mechanism during stressful times? If so, then you're in the right place.
This episode is specially designed for you! I've poured all my knowledge and experience into this comprehensive guide to help you understand and overcome binge and emotional eating. It's a holistic approach that addresses not only your eating habits but also your mental and emotional wellbeing.
This episode is about a journey that I, your host and guide, have been on professionally for over five years as an Eating Disorder Coach and a staff member at a residential Eating Disorder treatment center. My personal journey of healing has been much longer.
Now, as I transition careers, this video represents my understanding of how to heal the root causes of binge and emotional eating.
Remember, overcoming binge and emotional eating isn't about deprivation; it's about making mindful choices that nourish your body and soul. Are you ready to embark on this transformational journey?
In this special episode of the podcast, I share my interview on Write Your Best Self! "This can be a very anxious process. There's so much trauma around food... Learning to feel your body can be a scary process that brings up a lot."
I'm super excited to introduce you to Jared Levenson - the founder of Eating Enlightenment.
Jared was plagued with binge-eating for years until he learned how to transform his relationship with food. He's now a mindful eating zen master who's helped countless people curb their cravings through the power of journaling so they can feel empowered and enlightened around their food choices.
In this powerful episode, Jared explains why journaling is such an effective tool for tackling food problems - as well as sharing his own personal story of transformation.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I enjoyed recording it.
"The process of writing changes reality... it's very inspiring."
In this episode, Jared and I explore:
"Usually before people emotionally eat there's this cacophony - this internal argument back and forth that escalates. Then people binge to calm down those voices."
And more...
Feeling empowered around food can be a transformative experience. I hope this episode helps you to navigate forward in some way.
Jared's journaling prompt:
Write with awareness right before you eat.

Dr WendyLeigh White, a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and nondiet, weight-neutral nutritionist, takes a “nature cure” approach to prevention and healing in her clinical practice, teaching, and speaking.
She has maintained a clinical practice since 2008 and taught at the graduate level since 2016. In 2020, she was included in the Portland Monthly’s Top Doctors, Naturopath category.
Her aim is to empower every one of her patients/clients/students, especially those in larger bodies, to understand the interconnected systems of your body and its specific needs.
In this way, you learn to tune in to the signals your body is telling you. Only then can you give it what it needs to heal, to thrive, to learn how not to follow in your family’s medical footprints.
Building from a “nature cure” philosophy (food, water, air, movement, relationships), Dr White specializes in developing personalized lifestyle plans that align to your unique genetic makeup and lifestyle.
She enjoys coaching people who are needing support with allergies, digestive issues (irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea, constipation), and their relationship with food.
Despite her full schedule of patient care and university teaching, the times that Dr White is most passionate is when she is speaking to groups about the body’s innate ability to heal itself and to keep itself in balance when supported appropriately.

Aqua therapy can really help your body to heal. It's a great way to keep your joints and muscles loose, while also working on flexibility and range of motion.
This practice can be revolutionary for people living in larger bodies, and is totally in line with the Health At Every Size Perspective.
The water really helps with joints while still giving you a great movement practice.
And aqua therapy is in warm water too so don't worry about the temp!

How is it possible for Diabetes management and Intuitive Eating to go together?
Diabetes you need to manage blood sugar, whereas on a superficial level you might hear that Intuitive Eating means you can eat anything.
Can you really eat anything if you have diabetes? And is this even what Intuitive Eating means?
In this episode with Glenys Oyston, from Dare To Not Diet, Glenys also talks extensively about her journey from chronic dieter to Intuitive Eater.
One interesting thing about Glenys's story involve her weight gain over the years as she ditched the diet mentality, as dieting had kept her deprived and underweight for years. Oftentimes we are so afraid of weight gain, so Glenys's story is impactful and inspiring.
Glenys's is a full-time anti-dietician and she truly walks the talk and has been through the struggles and can help you if you struggle with dieting.

Today's guest is Holly Toronto and I'm so grateful she shared her story!
From her early roots in a rigid 'Purity' Christian culture that taught bodies were dirty and wrong ...
To struggling with food anxiety, hair loss, and extreme body image problems ...
Things all changed for Holly when she serendipitously brought the book Intuitive Eating with her while on a cruise where she couldn't eat anything.
Fast forward years later and now Holly helps women bridge the gap between Spirit and their bodies.
This interview is full with amazing insights:
- how to set up expectations to unconditionally eat so you can't fail
- how to deconstruct body image beliefs within the HAES philosophy
I know you'll love this episode.

Today you’re in for a treat 🙂
The one and only, Chef Dennis from AskChefDennis.com and @AskChefDennis, is here to chat!
Here’s a few of our conversation topics:
Also, it’s rare that I say this …
But Dennis really exemplifies to me the idea of ikigai or “reason for being”.
In other words, Life Purpose.
This ikigai concept was first modernized by Dan Buettner in 2005 in his National Geographic cover story, “Blue Zones”.
There are 7 seemingly magical Blue Zones throughout the world. Each area is defined by containing a strikingly percentage of people who live 100+ years old.
It turns out however, that Blue Zones are not magical. The people who live to be 100+ in these areas have tapped into this idea of ikigai.
It turns out that tapping into Life Purpose keeps you ALIVE!
Dennis represents ikigai to a tee because:
I really, truly feel that this ikigai energy, presence, light …
Shines through in this episode.
It’s an intangible feeling that’s hard to pin down, but when I re-listened to our conversation I just felt good afterwards!
Ok, Ok, I’m being over-dramatic 🙂
Without further ado, I present to you, the one and only, Chef Dennis:
Today Laura Ali introduces me to food appreciation.
Our conversation centers around two main topics:

Cultural Food Connection.

Here’s a quick summary from my most recent podcast conversation with Melainie Rogers (Balancedtx.com and @Balancedtx):
Overall, I was incredibly impressed by Melainie’s clear expertise in the field of eating disorders. She also explains complex topics in an easy to understand way!
For example, most people don’t understand why their attempts at weight loss fail. Yet Melanie was able to describe how your fat cells don’t go away when you lose weight, your fat cells only deflate.
And once your fat cells deflate, they trigger your body to start craving foods. And of course ... once you start craving it’s basically all over from there right?!
I know you will get a ton of useful information out of this video and podcast.

Susan Davis has been a professional practitioner since 2009 providing consultations to clients with various health conditions including digestive problems, low energy, weight related problems, depression, anxiety, addictions and children and adults with autism.
In 1964 America passed the Civil Act Right which essentially declared it’s illegal to judge and discriminate against a person based on their appearance.
Back in 1964 people with darker skin tones were seen as inferior. Dumb. Incapable. Not worthy.

There’s tons of obesity bias in our 2020 culture and so …

Now often times ‘body positivity’ is misunderstood.
Many people think body positivity means you are giving yourself permission to be unhealthy and fat.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. In fact, this is the opposite of body positivity!
So in this post we explore how to improve and maintain body positivity by examining two distinct trains of thought:
When we learn about the opposite of body positivity … we’ll see:
Have you ever felt out-of-control while emotional eating?
For the in-depth post on my blog covering this topic read here -
https://eatingenlightenment.com/2020/02/19/how-to-deal-with-overeating/
Like literally you were out of your body and couldn’t stop yourself?
For many people this amount of food intake can cause extreme stress.
Especially when you want to get back on track but find your eating habits getting the better of you … once again.
How do you deal with this overeating pattern?
The big picture idea on how to deal with overeating is two-fold:
Eat mindfully even during a binge
Reflect afterwards and learn without guilt
These 2 steps are how to deal with overeating.
Imagine going to work with a big rash on your face because you had been so stressed for months on end that your body was having a physical reaction.
A physical reaction due to stress? Yes, physical. Like your body.
Oftentimes people think stress is just in their heads. But your mind and body are connected.
And there are even more levels of stress too. For example, there is existential stress too.
Yentl describes these different types of stress later on in the interview, which you can see down below.
Now why listen to what Yentl has to say about how to be less stressed?
Yentl is an award-winning blogger and most importantly … Yentl was the person with the rash on her face.
Remember, imagine going to work with a rash on your face? That was literally Yentl.
She had a rash on her face due to high levels of chronic stress for months on end.
This was before she learned some of the relaxation techniques to reduce stress (like playing with her dog) which she shares below.
Yentl also shares another embarrassing story when she forgot about her party planning responsibility for a big event until the last minute!
That story is at the bottom of the post which you can read here: https://eatingenlightenment.com/2020/02/11/how-to-be-less-stressed/

It’s rare to lose 140 lb dieting and to keep the weight off. Most commonly people will binge, gain back weight, feel bad, and restart with another diet.
Here is an in-depth article on my blog for her journey: https://eatingenlightenment.com/2020/01/24/how-to-not-binge-eat-3/
So what’s even more rare lose weight “successfully” is to then switch to intuitive eating. The few people who control their diet and “successfully” lose weight often remain feeling trapped by their diet for rest of their lives around food.
Emotional eating is always the diet demon around the corner just waiting to find a time when you’re willpower is down! But Sophia is not ordinary.
She’s brilliant, like a shining sun 🙂 Sophia “successfully” lost weight but then went beyond. She realized losing weight just made her binge or feel trapped around food.
Sophia became obsessed about being good by exercising and her diet did nothing to help Sophia with her feelings. So Sophia decided to switch to intuitive eating!

Nonviolent Communication and emotional eating, they are almost like identical twins.
Imagine realizing that you have a twin, who looks nothing like you. Yet your mannerisms and thought patterns are the nearly the same.
You both think and approach problems the same way.
Having trouble in a relationship? You and your twin both observe, feel, realize your needs and make a request to your friend or partner.
Having trouble with food? You and your twin both observe, feel, realize your needs and practice self-care to stop emotional eating.
Twin-ness.
In yoga they say twin-ness differently. They say that the “micro” contains “macro”. Or how you do one thing is how you do everything.
It’s like a professional athlete. You can’t just be confident in the court. You can just ‘flip on’ confidence like a light switch. You have to BE confident in life. Then your confidence will show up naturally on the court.
How you eat food is how you live life.
Food is the micro. You only are eating food at maximum a few hours a day. You sleep many more hours than you eat food. You work many more hours than you eat food.
Yet how you eat food is how you live life. Twin-ness. The micro (food) contains the macro (life).
And so yes … communication and food … on surface level … they don’t have much in common.
But there is a certain twin-ness. There is a certain uncanny parallel that I find absolutely fascinating.
And that's what this article is about today!

This post is about discovering your beliefs so you can avoid relying on willpower to change your patterns.
Willpower is notoriously fickle. In Rick Kausman’s book “If not dieting, then what?” he talks extensively about avoiding the willpower trap.
In this post I take some of Rick’s thinking and mix in my own perspectives on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
I also talk about willpower in context of both eating and relationships.
There are 3 steps to change your eating and relationship patterns without using willpower:
1 – Understand Your Beliefs – your behavior is being unconsciously controlled by subconscious beliefs. The first step is simply discovering what your subconscious mind believes.
2 – Question Your Beliefs – after coming up with some ideas as to your subconscious beliefs, now you challenge, identify how current beliefs are black-and-white, identify how current beliefs help and harm, and question these beliefs.
3 – Write Out A New Gameplan – after coming up with more realistic versions of your beliefs, now it’s time to write out how you will take action the next time a situation occurs.

Today we talk about a powerful four step process to stop emotional eating.
Below are the four steps but it's important to remember to go through these steps while speaking towards your feeling mind.
Basically you must go through the steps, say the phrases with emotions mixed into your voice.
STEP 1. Express unconditional acceptance of internal experiences.
STEP 2. Offer understanding of internal experiences.
STEP 3. Remind and reassure: Inform your feeling self that your Inner Nurturer is on the scene and ready to help.
STEP 4. Offer love and support: Flood your feeling self with loving and supportive phrases.
THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS. Offer comfort: Calm your feeling self with soothing words and gestures.

Today we continue to learn how to help people with eating disorders.
Often times people with eating disorders are stuck in their heads and are resistant to change.
This means that often times you need to give this person resources so they feel more comfortable and secure and opening up about their struggles with food.
Here are three types of resources you can bring up in discussion in a non-threatening way:
1 - Internal Resources - emotional, cognitive, spiritual, relational, psychological, creative, physical
2 - Identify Unhelpful Resources - hyper vigilance, lashing out, running away, shutting down, disconnecting, cutting off from feelings and needs, overeating, working too hard, staying busy, trying to be perfect
3 - External Resources - emotional, relational, cognitive, psychological, material, spiritual

Today I will be talking about cognitive behavioral therapy to treat eating disorders.
Specifically I will be focusing on how cognitive behavioral therapy can be highly beneficial for engineers, coders, programmers, etc
So if you're a logical, left brained professional who struggles with food listen up!
Here are 3 reasons your analytical job increases your risk of food struggles:
1 - Left Brain Work Disconnects You - for your job you are always thinking, which means you are not feeling.
2 - Deadlines and Stress - you have lots of pressure to complete projects, meaning you sometimes are forced to skip meals and have low willpower at night
3 - Brilliant at Work, Not so Brilliant with Food - you have a natural strength and preference to use your thinking mind and it's gotten you far in life, but other aspects of life require different brain muscles
Now here are 3 reasons cognitive behavioral therapy can be amazing if you are natural thinking person:
1 - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Is Gold Standard Therapy - cognitive behavioral therapy has the most double blind placebo controlled studies and it's results are the best
2 - Cognitive Therapy Involves Thinking - you can use your strength in analyzing and thinking to work through cognitive behavioral therapy
3 - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Is Simple and Structured - compared to other therapies, cognitive behavioral therapy is simple to understand and has a structure

Have you ever ate something unhealthy, despite knowing this food was unhealthy and not wanting to eat this food?
Or just generally speaking, do you have bad habits that you cannot stop?
Do you even research various blog articles and videos about how to stop these bad habits? Yet you find yourself continually repeating these unhealthy habits?
It can seem very strange - on one hand you are actively trying to improve your life, but on the other hand you are sabotaging yourself.
This is the worst. Knowing that you are out of your own control is extremely stressful.
Today we are going to be examining what to do when you are stressed out and can't change your habits.
There are a few ways we will understand how to make sense of this paradox.
1 - Understand The Rewards Of Your Bad Habit - bad habits are giving you an emotional reward. You must identify this reward
2 - Replace Reward With Self Care - you must try to substitute bad habit the reward good habit
3 - Have A Growth Mindset - you must be willing to reflect upon why you are not changing by seeing what rewards you are getting from your bad habits

Often times when I talk to people before they hear about intuitive eating, they say things like
They report feeling these incredible urges to eat candy, sweets, ice cream and other sugary treats. Their instincts are powerful and they often times find themselves eating sugar without even thinking about it.
But today I will show you why you're not actually addicted to sugar, despite feeling like an addict. I'll also give you some practical tips to help make sense of this so that you can stop craving sugar so much starting today.
1 - No Human Studies On Sugar Addiction - there have only been a few studies on mice that showed sugar addiction and these mice were put in deprived conditions.
2 - Lack Energy Density Creates Sugar Cravings - if you aren't eating foods that fill you up nutritionally, you'll be faced with gnawing hunger and your instincts will go towards sugar.
3 - Unpleasant Eating Leads To More Sugar Cravings - if you are constantly following restrictive sugar rules and being guilty, instead of being present, you get even more urges towards sugar to disconnect

Here is the story of my dad's weight loss journey so far. The story is simple. He retired. But there's more than meets the eye ...
The following are some reasons why I am hopeful my dad will keep the weight off:
1 - Less Stress, Less Weight - instead of being on a diet with rules, which is stressful, flip the script and focus on decreasing your stress at work
2 - Clean Up Your Environment - at work you might be tempted by sugary snacks, if you remove yourself from tempting environments you will naturally have less urge to eat those sugary snacks
3 - Try To Associate Less With Unconscious Eaters - you might be in work relationships with unconscious eaters who eat unhealthy without thinking. While you're stuck with family, work relationships are easier to switch up

Today we are continuing our journey to stop emotional eating.
Here are a few exercises you can do to increase your acceptance of your emotions to learn how to be emotionally strong:
1 – Reflect on what you currently value – take a good look at yourself and clarify what you currently. Gracefully admit you may over-value your appearance, weight, and opinions of others.
2 – Reflect on your ideal values – instead of over-valuing appearance, weight and the opinions of others, what else would you like to value?
3 – Imagine you have died and people are at your funeral – what would you like them to be saying about you?
4 – List out various aspects of life and see how important they are to you – just looking at various life aspects can help broaden your perspective to see what’s truly important

Today we are increasing your tolerance and ability to handle distress.
Basically we're increasing your pain tolerance and to do that we are tying together a few different skill sets.
Together these skill sets are called distress tolerance. Distress tolerance means that you can handle difficult and intense emotions without needing food to make you feel better.
Let's first examine the cycle of distress so we can solve the problem:
1 - Non-acceptance - difficulty accepting negative emotions, want to pretend not bothering you or doesn't matter
2 - Unwillingness - even if you notice the negative emotion, you might not be willing to sit with the emotion and feel it
3 - Escape - you eat to avoid negative feeling
4 - Distress - you feel incredibly bad as you are forced to face the consequences of avoidant behavior

Here are a few ways you can start to practice mindful eating.
1 - Just A Few Mindful Bites - let's be real here eating a full mindful meal might be too much to ask in the beginning start off with just a few undistracted bites
2 - Use Your Mouth To Notice Tastes and Textures - to practice mindful eating pay attention to the distinct tastes and textures
3 - Try Chewing Slowly - just chew more slowly and you'll naturally be more mindful

What is a Life Weaving Conversation?
It's a conversation where separate strands of life are strung together in a coherent way contributing to greater understanding.
The first thread in my conversation with David centered about tunnel vision. Tunnel vision is where your reality is restricted to a limited view, and in David's case, tunnel vision meant religious fundamentalism.
Learning to ask questions and to question his assumptions was a critical foundation for David's journey into working as a counselor in private practice and helping veterans with invisible injuries.
The second thread in our conversation explored the difficult in getting out of tunnel vision. Because it's one thing to talk about tunnel vision, but a whole different thing to actually be stuck in tunnel vision.
Relationships, it turns out, are crucial to changing your perspective.
Relationships form the backbone of our life. Even in Buddhist philosophy, everything is recognized as interconnected.
Relationships are far more important than willpower. Willpower is oftentimes why mindfulness and cognitive therapy can be misunderstood.
Both mindfulness and cognitive therapy can go to battle with thoughts. You might try to 'will your thoughts' away. However, battling your thoughts only causes resistance.
So the key is to change your relationship to your thoughts. As David notes, you don't act on every one of your thoughts during the day. Thoughts are more like a structure of reality.
However, you can learn to accept your thoughts without getting lost in tunnel vision by having a clear understanding of your vision and values.
Finally, we talked about vision and values. Particularly in a world where there's so much noise, it's perhaps the most important thing for us to form relationships and explore our values consciously.
Without conscious exploration, we'll be greatly hindered in our quest to live our best lifes and to be able to respond to situations flexibly.
David has a private therapy practice and he works with people all over the world in different timezones.

Rarely do you meet a person who is so uplifting!
From having found her gift and purpose at age 16, to spontaneously writing a book in 4 hours, Dani really made me smile in this interview.
As I myself personally identify with the gift of healing, I knew I was in the presence of a healer.
How did I know I was in the presence of a healer?
I knew because Dani spoke about Love from the heart, so effortlessly the energy just poured forth. I even gave her tough questions too!
Asking about her struggles from changing career paths, asking her to share stories about her two daughters and husband, Dani answered all questions in a powerful way.
I'm not surprised to see that her book is titled 'How To Empower Your Kids'. Empower seems very fitting, in a caring supportive way.
So without giving too much away I highly suggest you listen to the podcast episode!
Below the podcast are various links you can use to connect with Dani.

A handful of videos ago, I started diving into the topic of emotional eating.
I started off by saying there were two primary skills you needed to know. These skills were opposites - active versus acceptance.
The first skill was reframing. Here is the link to the previous video about refraining - https://youtu.be/JR1JTNz_owI
Today we are starting to talk about the acceptance skills.
Here are a few different ways we will approach the topic of acceptance:
1 - SIFT - sift your emotions to accept them by sensing, interpreting, feeling, and noticing your tendencies.
2 - Examine Limiting Emotional Beliefs - many of us subconsciously believe feeling and accepting our emotions is failure. We must be aware of these beliefs in order to practice acceptance.
3 - Notice Non-acceptance Versus Acceptance - you can start to get a feel for acceptance by bringing up a difficult situation and tensing your muscles and noticing how you feel. Then release your muscles and notice how you feel.
4 - Being Truly Willing To Feel Pain - you might secretly want to 'accept' your feelings in hopes you feels go away but this is not what it means to be honestly willing to accept pain feelings.

For years I ate vegetarian food only, no meat.
But I wasn't a healthy vegetarian. I let vegetarianism get to my ego. I anemia and only weighed 125 lbs. I wasn't getting enough iron in my blood, and I was always fatigued.
So I started eating meat again for health reasons. My weight normalized and my energy improved. In the following years I have continued to eat meat...
But nowadays I feel inspired when I see companies like Beyond Meat. I am tempted to become vegan again.
Here are my thoughts on going vegetarian and eating meat replacements products.
1 - Be Vegetarian With Protein - being vegetarian can be great but dangerous if you don't get proper protein
2 - Eat Meatless Meat For Delicious Protein - meatless meat nowadays tastes great and has similar texture to hamburgers or sausages
3 - A Dash Vegetarian Pride Is Good - be proud, tell people if you want that your vegetarian and eating meatless meats, but don't get too prideful
4 - Vote With Your Dollar - buying meatless meat products supports these technologies. Ultimately to stop global warming we need to transition to meatless meats

Today we're going to be talking about the root causes of disordered eating, eating disorders and binge eating.
It all begins with the bond between mother and child, and father's too.
According to attachment theory there are three main types of attachment:

I recently read Christie Harrison's New York times opinion piece about yoyo dieting and other cultural issues around weight.
This video I'm going to give my reaction to several talking points that I read in her article

Have you ever had a train of thought disrupted by self hatred thought?
You're just going about your day running errands or sending out emails and all of the sudden you're mentally beating the crap out of yourself because your body isn't an Instagram model?
These negative thoughts are the reasons why we are our own worst critics. This post explores:
Why we are our own worst critics
Two skills to be nicer to yourself
2 techniques to make your brain shut up
First let's understand why we are our own worst critics.
It all begins innocently. Perhaps your parents would always weigh themselves each day and make an off-hand remark to you about whether they gained weight.
Even simple visits to the doctor's office where you are weighed can lead you to place much of your self-esteem on a proper weight and body image.
Of course there are many people who have verbally abusive parents, whose parents teased them about their weight.
My experience tells me that the majority of people had pretty good parents, good enough parents but their parents came from an older generation that was ignorant in terms of dieting.
Nowadays we know that dieting doesn't work. In fact we know the opposite is true - that dieting is actually harmful and causes weight gain.
Yeah the previous generation didn't know this. They grew up in a generation that didn't even know smoking cigarettes was bad for you. So they were raised with much different beliefs and would much less sensitive about weight.
So for all these reasons you may have a developed an inner critic simply because your environment growing up was hostile to weight.
Okay so we are our own worst critics, now what?
The old generation was all about willpower.
If you are overweight, go to the gym. If you weigh too much, eat less. Simple as that.
Obesity was because you were lazy.
And even worse, if you were obese, then teasing you and shaming you was considered proper behavior. I've talked to people who believe that shaming people who are obese is the proper way to treat of these people and it just saddens me.
But nowadays thankfully, we know better. We know that willpower and controlling our thoughts and our appetites simply doesn't work.
It's like trying to build a house to live in with Legos. Legos make things nice and simple but when you actually tried to do it in real life, it doesn't work out. The same is with willpower.
So instead of willpower we use two primary skills.
The first skill is skillful effort to redirect and refrain your thoughts.
The primary way we do this is to examine the truthfulness of our thoughts.
There's a big misunderstanding that we do need to clarify before going on. We do not get upset at ourselves for having these automatic thoughts. We must remember that these automatic thoughts we grew up with as children and these thoughts were embedded into us through our childhood.
So this right here is really important. We expect these automatic thoughts. Because we expect them we don't get mad when they arrive.
So for example, if you suddenly think to yourself "God I'm fat and ugly and hopeless" we realize this is an automatic thought and don't get mad at ourselves for having it.
Instead, we seek to examine the truthfulness of these thoughts.
How do you examine the truthfulness of a thought?
You turn the thought into a question.
So for the "God I'm fat and ugly and hopeless" thought, you could reframe as a question by asking if you were really hopeless. Is it really true that you are hopeless?
The answer is no. You are not entirely hopeless. Therefore, the thought needs to be modified.
How do you modify a thought?
You try to come up with a more realistic thought that actually reflects reality.
You can say instead of being hopeless, that you feel hopeless, but are actually successful in different areas of life.
So that's it for this video. Let me know - what's your preferred technique on stopping negative thoughts, mindfulness or effort?

In this Eating Disorder Interview With Amy Waddle you will learn:
This past Saturday I gave an open, free overeating workshop at the Santa Clara library.
During this workshop I met some interesting characters who had some interesting stories.
One story in particular resonated with me. I met an older Indian man and his wife who were living with their son who worked at Google.
And I was able to connect with him in a powerful way by giving him analogies to learning a different language.
See, this man said he had a problem with overeating. He was eating too much. Eating too much till the point of feeling bloated, guilty, and anxious.
But, something I noticed was that his English was excellent. His wife on the other hand could understand my body language and my gestures which I was exaggerating, but the husband was the translator. He had learned English very well. This insight would help me later on explain to him:
Why he needed to realize his body spoke a foreign language that he could listen to.
How the same skills he used to learn English could be applied to learning the different language of his body.
Before I gave this man some eating wisdom about learning a different language of his body, I first got to know him and hear his story (which I explain in video above).

Let's talk about how to change your relationship with food.
I'm going to talk about specifically the steps you need to take to undergo the unconditional eating process.
First you must develop a plan and think things through.
What food?
How will you eat this food?
Where will you eat this food?
When will you eat this food?
After you have planned out everything for your big day, for this transformative meal, follow these three principles:
Before - notice what you are feeling before you eat.
During - notice how the food tastes like while you eat and when your stomach starts to give you fullness sensations and the pleasure and taste of the food decreases.
After - be careful that you truly eat until you are satisfied. After you have eaten to your heart's content, notice how you feel afterwards.
Now here is an important question - are you even ready to unconditionally eat? Do you understand the process. If you don't understand the process please be sure to watch my other video here which goes in-depth about the process - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqJDH...

You probably have seen an extreme food challenge.
Or perhaps you glanced at your kid's screen and noticed people wolfing down insane amounts of food very quickly.
Let's name this phenomenon for what it is - binge eating without guilt.
It's likely that this type of behavior is giving an inappropriate message. Simply put, watching other people stuff themselves is not good for your health.
So should we ban these videos? Should we write to the creators of these videos and tell them to stop?
Here's my perspective on what is appropriate action for you to take:
Stop tuning out, start tuning in.
Take a stand for personal food preferences by giving everyone food freedom!!!
By letting go of judgment towards others, you give yourself the chance to be free of judgment towards yourself.
There will always be arguments about the right way to eat food, are you going to get involved in everyone of these arguments?
It's hard enough to respect your own body and taste preferences, focus on yourself first and be your own light.
Here's another video where I talk about why diets fail psychologically - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgfiA...

Do cravings feel impossibly irresistible to you? You can't stop thinking about food all the time?
Perhaps you're ready to try some radical approach to food. Perhaps you're really ready to embrace unconditional eating.
4 Points of Unconditional Eating
Dieting is dangerous - and can cause food obsession thoughts and binge eating
Food freedom is important - many people that are normal with food have this food freedom and you can have it too.
How to do food freedom correctly - don't try food freedom unless you're eating enough nutrient dense foods and have actively prioritized meeting your emotional needs.
Common fears of unconditional eating are mostly nothing to worry about - you won't eat too much and your taste preferences will change.
This is an easily misunderstood topic so feel free to explore another video on this topic about getting rid of cravings which you can watch here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Creut...

Why do I always want to eat?
Here are 5 reasons why:
Cultural Conditioning - for millions of years food was scarce. Now food is always in your face.
You Eat To Avoid Stress - you're in a bad habit of eating when even just slightly stressed.
You're Not Eating Enough To Get Full - fullness is either foreign to you OR you are afraid of feeling full because you fearfully associate fullness with binge eating bloatedness.
Lack of Protein / Fat Or Too Many Carbs - carbs are easy, convenient and temporarily fill you up.
You're Stuck In A Story Of Deprivation - You haven't healed an inner wound just yet
If you aren't sure what fullness is or how to tell when you are full, I made an additional video training you can watch here on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpmBI...

Below are some more in-depth thoughts of mine!
You can have your cake and eat it too.
Well, maybe not cake. But here's a list of foods that will keep you full so you eat less calories overall.
These measurements are from a ‘satiety index’ or a scientific list of foods that keep you full.
In general these scores are derived from 4 different criteria:
Lots of fiber
Lots of protein
Lots of volume
Low in energy density
To read this list please realize the base measurement is white bread which only scored 100.
Boiled potatoes 323
Fish 225
Oatmeal 209
Oranges 203
Apples 197
Whole Wheat pasta 188
Beef 176
Baked Beans 168
Grapes 162
Whole Wheat Bread 157
The highest scoring food was boiled potatoes.
Way different than salty fries!!!!
Specifically boiled potatoes scored 3.23 on a Fullness Index.
White bread only scored 1.
What does this mean?
Basically boiled potatoes keep you 3x as full. So if you get full ... You don't need to eat so many slices of white bread.
Knowing what foods are filling can also help you significantly decrease food cravings and binge eating!
For another post where I review a short guideline on how to easily sort through foods which give you fullness so that you can easily make purchasing decisions while grocery shopping, check out this video here - https://youtu.be/R-q4RJHI5AM

Have you ever come home from work absolutely starving, ate dinner, got full, and then proceeded to keep eating until you fell asleep?
Or, do you have a vague fear that your kitchen is a place where you lose control in the evening or late at night?
often times we feel that evening and late night is where we're most vulnerable. And this video I take a look at the late afternoon snack.
Getting late afternoon snack is important for the following reason - missing the afternoon snack makes you vulnerable to overeat at night.
On the other hand, if you eat this snack, you'll be much less likely to give into temptations.
oftentimes people know about the benefits of the late afternoon snack, but they either ...
À) don't have enough time
B) don't know what to make
So in this video I wanted to show you a quick snack template which will give you a couple ideas on what snacks to make in a short amount of time.
Combine Black Beans with Whole Wheat Bread or Brown Rice
Then Add A 'Good' Fat On Top Like Avocado, Meat, Or Egg
That's it!
