Huge thanks to Kip Ioane, head coach of the Willamette Men's Basketball program, for taking time to chat with New Leader Workshop.

Kip is putting massive action into reshaping how college athletes view the concept of masculinity. After a series of harmful incidents on campus at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, Kip felt lucky that his players weren't involved. But he didn't want to stop there. He decided that he wanted to do more to ensure that his players understood what it meant to be stand up citizens in the community.

A rising tide raises all ships.

This is the truth and a big reason it is so important for all business owners to learn how to contribute and build up the community around them. This conversation was inspired by a challenged from Dick Withnell at a YMCA event in Salem, Oregon. At the event he challenged the audience to think about who would be the next generation of community leaders.

Two people that immediately came to mind for me were Conrad Venti and Alex Casebeer.

We were able to chat on a Zoom call last week. Enjoy hearing about

Last week I had the opportunity to talk with Kyle Sexton and Tom Hoffert about myths circulating throughout our business community.

Those familiar with the podcast have heard Tom on previous episodes. He's CEO of Salem Chamber of Commerce and previously worked as Sales Manager for Don Pancho Authentic Mexican Foods.

Kyle is a thought leader in the business community and regularly speaks around the country as well as internationally.

Three myths we discuss:

  1. Now is not the time to be pursuing new clients
  2. For a business to succeed, they need to reinvent the way they do business completely
  3. To survive, we need to offer drastic discounts

I'd love to hear your biggest takeaway from the episode.

I’m excited to partner with my brilliant and talented friend, Loree Sanchez, every week to provide you content that will help you be a better teammate, peer, and overall influencer.

Today we discuss differences between Extroverts and Introverts, including how we can best partner together.

The Jung-Myers theory describes two kinds of mental processes: aking in or gathering information and making decisions and coming to conclusions about that information.

Everyone has a preferred way of using these mental processes.

People who prefer INTROVERSION  focus in-depth on a few interests, learn best by reflection, mental “practice,” and take the initiative selectively—when the situation or issue is critical to them.

People with a preference for INTROVERSION reflect more, be quieter, keep enthusiasm inside, reflect before responding to questions, wait for space, be more contained, and harder to read.

I’m hoping you could send me a DM on Instagram with your biggest takeaway from today’s episode. What actions will you take to help you better connect with your Extroverted/Introverted friends?

Welcome to our first episode of Teamwork Tuesdays!

I'm excited to partner with my brilliant and talented friend, Loree Sanchez, every week to provide you content that will help you be a better teammate, peer, and overall influencer.

Today we discuss differences between Extroverts and Introverts, including how we can best partner together.

The Jung-Myers theory describes two kinds of mental processes: aking in or gathering information and making decisions and coming to conclusions about that information.

Everyone has a preferred way of using these mental processes.

People who prefer EXTRAVERSION are energized by interacting with others, are friendly and expressive, prefer to communicate by talking, and work out ideas by talking them through

People with a preference for EXTRAVERSION may talk more, show energy and enthusiasm, respond to questions immediately, interrupt, and provide nonverbal information—gestures, etc.

I'm hoping you could send me a DM on Instagram with your biggest takeaway from today's episode. What actions will you take to help you better connect with your Extroverted/Introverted friends?

Whether you are growing your business or working on a sales team, landing contracts with billion-dollar companies might seem out of reach. This perspective isn't true. The difference in hitting your goals and not is the way we spend our time. People who are intentional with their time are intentional with their outcomes. It's so easy to be lost in the weeds and act every day without taking a moment to think about whether or not the actions we are taking are getting us where we want.

In this podcast I break down three steps that can help you define your goals and start taking action.

  1. Envision yourself a year from now. When you look back at the year, what do you want to have accomplished?
  2. What is the smallest step forward you can take towards this goal?
  3. Set a date for action. When are you going to start taking action towards this goal?

I also take a moment to share a couple of my own big goals for this year.

Send me a DM on Instagram, @MrJacobEspi, with your goals for the year and action you are taking. I want to hear about them!

In this episode we discuss why being socially aware can make or break your team's culture.

Emotional Intelligence starts with self-awareness and self-management. As leaders, we need also to be aware of the emotional cues our team sends us through their body language and mannerisms. Being in tune with the needs of our team will allow us to identify problems and be proactive in being available as support when needed.

This episode will break down many of the strategies discussed in the book Emotional Intelligence 2.0.

With emotional intelligence responsible for 80% of our success, it's important for leaders at all levels to be intentional about developing their emotional intelligence. Fortunately, we are able to improve our EQ with hard work and focus.

What is EQ? The authors of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 describe it as, “Your ability to recognize and understand emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this awareness to manage your behavior and relationships.”

We recommend sending out an anonymous survey to your peers to see if they agree or disagree with the statements below.

  • I feel comfortable approaching my leader for help when needed

  • My leader listens when I provide them with feedback that is about them

  • My leader is proactive in helping me when I need it

  • My leader effectively managers conflict on the team and with their peers

  • I see my leader ask for help when they need it

Nobody shows up to work with the desire to be a terrible boss. Unfortunately, leaders at times take action that can leave their team feeling stressed, overwhelmed or confused.

In today's episode, we discuss why it is so important for leaders to take action that will inspire their team to go above and beyond--as well as believe in their own personal potential.

Liz Wiseman's book Multiplier is a foundational book for any new leader to pick up. We discuss a few of our favorite action items in today's episode. Enjoy!

New Leader Workshop is all about proving New Leaders with an opportunity to grow and get better. Let's start with Carol Dweck's book Mindset.

It is important for us as Leaders to understand how a Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset are different and why it impacts how we interact with new challenges, feedback, and hard work.

Challenges

Growth Mindset: Challenges are worth it because even when we fail, we will learn and get better. A person with this perspective is willing to accept potential failure and understands that if they aren’t failing, they aren’t growing. New challenges are about the opportunity to get better and not about what people think about us.

Fixed Mindset: New challenges are only an opportunity to look bad. A person with this perspective will not want to take on new challenges. They’ll want to stick with what they know because doing something new can be risky and lead to failure.

Feedback

Growth: Feedback is a chance to grow. It is not about defining who we are in the present, it is about helping us be and do better in the future. We understand that we are nowhere near our potential and will always say “thank you” when someone makes an effort to help us by providing us feedback.

Fixed: Takes feedback personally and gets defensive. A person with this mindset is only interested in hearing what they do well. When someone provides constructive criticism, they are quick to explain how the feedback doesn’t apply or focus on how the feedback is being presented instead of looking for the value in how it can help them grow.

Hard Work

Growth: Hard work is not only worth it, it is necessary for us to reach our potential. Big changes don’t happen overnight. We understand the value in developing good habits and how consistency and sacrifice are worth the long-term rewards.

Fixed: There is no point in working hard. They think some people are successful and others are not. They argue that hard work is worthless because they don’t see the benefit.

As leaders, it is important that we see the potential in the people around us and in ourselves. Remember: your mindset is not fixed, and it can change depending on the situation. Self-awareness is key.
