Pastor Jim leads us in our ongoing Advent series entitled, "Vintage Christmas". This week we explore vintage peace - where it ends, where it begins, and what the Bible reveals about finding it even in the craziness, hustle and glitz of the modern Christmas season.
Jim kicks off the Advent season by looking at what it means to wait or anticipate, and the kinds of waiting we might experience.
In our continuing series on following Jesus together, we're exploring Jesus' words in Matthew 13 as He compares the Kingdom of God to treasure. We look at the ways we structure our lives according to everything we hold most dear, and we ask - what are the micro-decisions of our nitty gritty, every day reflecting? What is it all worth to us?
What is a disciple? What is a Christian? Is it possible to be a Christian and not be a disciple?
We often see "monuments" raised up in our hearts, lives and actions. Often immovable, they are reminders of pain, failures, lies or maybe offenses that have been put upon us or we have put upon others. But what if Jesus talks about a different way - a way in which new monuments are lifted up - reminders that bring peace and not pain, joy and not sadness - identity and not shame? And what if these are found in the places that we sometimes least expect it - in community with others?
The life of Jesus was a demonstration for us of what it looks like to invade the kingdom of darkness with the Kingdom of God. Every event of His life -- every healing, every deliverance, every confrontation, every teaching --was a demonstration of supernatural LOVE.
While many are familiar with the story of the Good Samaritan, there is a critical message and ultimately, a question for each of us as we grow together in Jesus: When it comes to loving our neighbors, what do we let inform the who, the when, and the how much?
Doug discusses how to use our scriptures and The Holy Spirit to get to do what Jesus did. By relaying on the fact that The Holy Spirit is bringing the presence and power of Jesus to bear in all situations. Healing is one of the gifts of the Spirit. Its real, and it is for today, and it is available. Second, while there are no formulas and no guarantees, we CAN learn from imitating Jesus. And third, as followers of Jesus here at Hope lets make it our normal practice to pray for healing no matter what results we see or don't see.
Some churches teach that Jesus had to die on the cross to appease God. That His wrath needed to be taken out on someone or something so He sent Jesus. BUT what scripture actually says is the opposite of that. All throughout scripture we read that God loves us, he cares for us, He shows us mercy. Jesus willingly went to the cross. He could have stopped that from happening but he didn't.
During time of big change, we can often find ourselves dealing with unmet expectations, or circumstances that are less than comfortable. But God is with us through it all, helping us find new ways of seeing and living. Today, we look at how we can be more present to the ways that God may be growing us, even through the discomfort of rough seasons.
Some commonly held beliefs often become obstacles when it comes to experiencing more of the presence and power of the Holy Spirit in our lives. In this message we look at a few of those obstacles, and invite you to join us in seeking the presence and power of the Spirit.
Holy Spirit; the reality of this dimension of God is often one that many shy away from. Let's get to know the Holy Spirit...
In the bible, God's angels are majestic, fierce beings. Messengers of God, they fight on behalf of the people of God
Footholds are one way the enemy gains a place in our lives from which to attack. Dealing with our anger and resolving issues quickly leads to living in more freedom
As we launch a new series on the unseen world, we start by looking at who Satan is, where he came from, and his role in the Story.
There is evil in THE story and in YOUR story, and according to scripture the devil wants to destroy you; but because of Jesus you have nothing to fear. In His name you can fight back, and win.
Do not lead us into temptation... Temptation can be dangerous territory. While we are to expect it, God promises it will not be more than you can bear, and that He will provide a way out.
If, as some believe, everything is planned out according to God's will, why does Jesus tell us to pray that "Father, Your will be done"? Prayer does impact outcomes, and it also aligns our heart to the things that matter to God's heart.
In a polarized world where tensions are high, how is love lived out by people who have been given a new identity in Christ?
When we pray, starting with a focus on the Father can reframe everything. Today we begin a new series based on the Lord's Prayer
We all have hopes, but what is our ultimate hope? We begin the season of Advent, which helps us prepare our hearts for Christmas. This week's theme is HOPE.
Jesus warned us that we will be persecuted. What is actual persecution? (HINT: It's not being required to wear face coverings in church) How are we to respond to persecution? And what might be formed in us so we'd believe Jesus that when we are persecuted we are actually "blessed"?
“Blessed are the peace makers…” Not the peace FAKERS. Not the peace KEEPERS. Blessed are the peace MAKERS.
Blessed are the pure in heart: is the heart of a Christian wicked? How does God see our hearts?
When Jesus taught, "blessed are the merciful," his listeners likely were reminded of something God said through the prophet Micah to the people of Israel hundreds of years earlier: "what does the Lord require of you? To do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God."
A merciful person is full of mercy. We can be filled with mercy when we, in gratitude, stay in touch with the mercy God has had on us.
The upside-down message of Jesus isn't just for the internal state and posture of our hearts and minds... in fact, Jesus proclamations in the Beatitudes flow into our interactions with others and the world around us. How do you respond in relationship to those who hurt you? We explore this and more this week as we land on,
When Jesus talks about the kind of righteousness we hunger and thirst for, does He mean personal righteousness or seeing righteousness in the world around us? Actually it's BOTH, and they are woven together. It's why your heart aches when injustice happens: the righteousness of God is IN you.
Words. We all have them but we don't all treat them the same. Pastor Jason Turner shares God's heart regarding how we are to use our words, because words do matter.
We are a hungry and thirsty people. The enemy of our souls looks to distract and outwit us by offering counterfeits that leave us empty. But Jesus offers us real life.
What does it mean to hunger and thirst for righteousness? How are we "filled" in this way?
Meekness is on display, not when we act like pushovers, but when we live in the authentic power of loving and serving, just as Jesus did.
Meekness is powerfully displayed when we have some power or right but instead of demanding them, we choose to defer to someone else in love.
When Jesus says, "blessed are the meek," we often misunderstand what He is saying. Meek is not weak, it's translated to mean "soothing medicine, a gentle breeze and power under control."
Diving into what it means to be meek, finding blessing, and how it lines up with the world's view of both
Getting real about what is actually happening in our hearts and lives is crucial to living in the freedom and joy that is available to us. Blessed are those who mourn is all about getting the things inside of us to the outside of us. Expressing it is a step towards comfort and courage
We continue our series on the upside-down message of Jesus. The Kingdom of God seems upside-down to the ways the kingdom of this world operates. In a world of posing and powering up, Jesus says that the fullness of God's way, His Kingdom, comes to the broken; the poor in spirit
The heart of God the Father is stunning. No matter who you are or what you have done, He loves you.
We reboot this series on the upside-down message of Jesus. The Kingdom of God seems upside-down to the ways the kingdom of this world operates. In a world of division and disunity, we tend towards combativeness or passivity. There is another way. The way of a peacemaker.
Pastor Jim speaks from the heart about the turmoil of our nation, and examining our hearts in light of systemic racism
Worried? Let it prompt prayer. Bring all your worries and cares to God. He wants to hear the honest cry of your heart.
Can we move beyond simply getting more information into experiencing peace? What might it look like to "put into practice" the things God offers?
When trials turn up the heat in our lives, we can allow God to bring us deeper transformation. Even failures can result in our strengthening and growth...
Trials and suffering can, if we allow it, result in transformation. So what do we want?
Joy in suffering? Is that even possible? How might tests and trials lead to growth, and joy?
Living in the peace of God is possible. We can, more of the time, learn to experience more freedom from anxiety.
Power, love and a sound mind -- God gave us a spirit marked by those characteristics. What does the battle between fear and those things look like?
