The scaling back of expectations for the number of interest rate cuts from the US Federal Reserve in 2024 has been a feature so far this year. In the view of Mark Richards, Head of Flexible and Absolute Return, investors should remember that the Federal Reserve's dual mandate of preserving growth and protecting jobs gives it a dovish bias. Rather than being on a mission to eliminate inflation at all costs, the Fed could move quickly if required. As Mark points out to Daniel Morris, Chief Market Strategist, such action from the Fed could boost the performance of government bonds in multi-asset portfolios, Risks to such a scenario include doubts about the sustainability of high government budget deficits. The resulting search for alternative stores of value could well continue to favour gold.

In this edition of Talking Heads, Daniel Morris, Chief Market Strategist, and Luca Pagni, Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) Portfolio Manager, discuss the success of fixed income exchange-traded funds, due, as he explains, to the fact that they offer investors access to a diversified and liquid portfolio of bonds at an attractive cost. The discussion also covers innovations including fixed maturity ETFs that combine the benefits of an ETF and the characteristics of a standalone bond with a set maturity date and declining interest-rate risk over time. Another topic is a more active approach to the management of these index-related products.

Indian equities have seen three years of solid performance amid earnings growth and political continuity. Jayesh Gandhi, Head of India Equities, tells Daniel Morris, Chief Market Strategist, in this episode of Talking Heads that the upbeat outlook for the large services sector, further domestic growth and the reallocation of Indian assets towards equities should underpin the market. Potential risk factors to monitor include rises in energy prices and/or interest rates. Both of which could throw the economy off course.

There is value left in eurozone investment-grade corporate bonds even after a solid 2023. Among Asian emerging market (EM) equities, many investors have focused this year on what they see as an usually lacklustre Chinese economy – traditionally an EM growth engine. The reality, however, is that Beijing’s efforts to re-engineer the economy have led to a situation where support for the economy appears centred more on tackling possible systemic issues than developing new growth engines.

Resilient domestic demand and record-high profit margins at cash-rich companies have helped shield the eurozone economy from much of the effect of higher interest rates. However, the full impact is likely to be felt in 2024. The outlook for emerging markets is brighter than it is for developed markets when it comes to growth, inflation and public debt, Jean-Charles Sambor, Head of Emerging Market Debt, tells Daniel Morris, Chief Market Strategist, on our latest Talking Heads podcast. While China may look like the exception now, increasingly firm support from Beijing should trigger a rebound in the next few quarters from the problems of deflation and property market weakness plaguing the economy today. Listen to this Talking heads podcast with portfolio manager absolute return Cedric Bernard-Villeneuve with chief market strategist Daniel Morris. They discuss the sensibility of smaller central bank rate rises and the wide opportunity set in the fixed income asset class. Cedric highlights the potential presented by short duration trades and by positioning for steeper bond yield curves.
Listen to this Talking heads podcast with Christophe Montcerisier, head of real estate debt, and chief market strategist Daniel Morris. Their topics include fundamental characteristics of real estate debt such as its role as an inflation hedge – through the floating rate coupons on the debt – and the predictability of cash flows resulting from the structure of leases.
High-yield bonds – defined as corporate bonds rated below BBB− or Baa3 by established credit rating agencies – have had a good run since the fourth quarter of 2022. Evaluating the outlook for this asset class requires taking a view on current valuations and determining how conditions in the US economy this year may impact corporate America.
In recent years, food security has become a more prominent issue for consumers and governments, alongside energy security. Beyond supply chain disruptions and more extreme weather, the war in Ukraine has increased the strains. Food security concerns not just food growing, production and processing, but access to safe and nutritional food.

Listen to our quarterly asset allocation podcast with global head of multi-asset Maya Bhandari and chief market strategist Daniel Morris. They review the four key determinants of financial market behavior this year and the investment opportunities that follow from that assessment for the main asset classes.
Given China‘s pivotal role as the world’s second-largest economy, its recent refocusing on lifting growth should be a tailwind for other economies. The shift should support those countries benefiting from the expected pickup in Chinese travel abroad and domestic consumer spending after Beijing scrapped its stringent mobility-restricting rules to contain the spread of Covid.
Picking investable assets for a portfolio can be hard. Fundamental analysis focuses on what investors believe will happen in the future. Quantitative investing, by contrast, focuses on the facts: how historical data relationships may give us insight into future market moves, helping us to systematically select assets on the basis of signals or factors.
After a bright start, US mortgage-backed securities face a sunnier year in which this fixed income asset class could reverse part of the gloomy outcome of a challenging and volatile 2022. With the peak in inflation behind us and the end of the US Federal Reserve’s rate rising cycle in sight, investors have an opportunity to benefit for a likely bounce-back.
In what can be expected to still be volatile currency markets, the US dollar looks set to lose further ground in 2023 as its lustre as a high-yielding hedge fades. Expect the euro and the Japanese yen to pick up the baton as both economies profit from the gradual reopening of the Chinese economy now that Beijing has dropped its strict Covid-fighting regime.
We anticipate a better year for emerging market corporate debt on the back of a brighter outlook for China and the wider Asian region. However, a raft of uncertainties including those concerning inflation and geopolitics, could make for a volatile environment in 2023.
Since biodiversity loss affects large swaths of the economy, it should be front of mind for investors. Not least because, as Adam Kanzer, head of stewardship for the Americas, points out, nature loss also makes meeting the world’s climate goals harder.
Sergey Pergamentsev, head of Institutional Structured Management in the Multi Asset Quantitative and Solutions team, and co-head of the Investment Insights Centre Andrew Craig discuss recent developments in liability-driven investing (LDI), a strategy institutional investors such as pension funds use to match investments and future liabilities.
The sell-off in bond markets this year has driven yields to levels that merit closer attention, says Victoria Whitehead, senior portfolio manager for European investment-grade (IG) credit. Victoria sees eurozone IG credit as attractive on the basis that risk premia are commensurate with much higher default rates than she thinks will actually materialise.
Slower growth (and eventually, lower rates of inflation) will likely come in 2023 thanks to restrictive central bank monetary policy. What conclusions should investors draw for their allocations to equities and fixed income around the world?
Thematic environmental strategies face countervailing forces in the near term. Support may come from the ‘green shoots’ of the recent growth stock recovery, offset by the downdraft of recessionary risk. Investors with a longer-term view should stay focused on the tailwinds and enduring drivers of demand including regulatory and legislative support.
While many bond investors have felt the earth move under the feet this year as the asset class experienced the finale of a 50-year bull market, the denouement has not stripped them of opportunities, Arnaud-Guilhem Lamy, head of euro aggregate bond management strategies, tells chief market strategist Daniel Morris.
As part of its contribution to the low carbon energy transition, BNP Paribas Asset Management is taking action and implementing best practice, including in its investment strategies. This includes working with clients on decarbonisation and setting internal targets to progressively increase the share of assets under management aligned with net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
The tide is rising for water as an investment theme as it benefits from a growing awareness of both climate change and years of underinvestment, particularly in water infrastructure. This focus should have a direct positive impact on companies providing water solutions, Justin Winter, water strategy co-manager, tells Andrew Craig, co-head of the investment insights centre.
Tumultuous geopolitical and economic times may be clouding the prospects for the high-growth renewables sector now, but investors should not lose sight of the longer-term potential of areas such as solar and green hydrogen, Edward Lees, co-head of the Environmental Strategies Group, tells chief market strategist Daniel Morris on our weekly Talking heads podcast.
Thematic investing, which centres on the long-term forces that shape consumer needs and industries, is a way for investors pivot away from traditional 60-40 portfolios to a broad and diversified set of opportunities that can create market-beating returns spanning several generations.
Investors shell-shocked by the fallout from high inflation, rising interest rates and slowing economies and looking to alternative markets for portfolio diversification and attractive returns might want to consider a relatively young and little known asset class: direct small lending.
While equity markets are feeling the pinch from rising real rates, earnings reports and guidance are yet to reflect the effects of the encroaching recession. This leaves markets vulnerable to a downside correction once the message sinks in.
It is all hands on deck to deal with the current energy crisis, even if that forces countries to use more polluting fossil fuels to meet energy needs especially in the coming winter. However, that does not mean the transition to renewable resources should end up on the backburner. Instead, there is a clear case for accelerating the move to solar, wind and other sources of clean energy.
Senior secured corporate loans are debt instruments similar to high-yield bonds in that they are rated below investment-grade (Ba1/BB+). They differ from high-yield in that they are senior secured instruments, secured by all assets on a company’s balance sheet. In addition, as floating rate instruments, global loans are relatively immune to the adverse impact of rising interest rates.
The summer has seen a sharp deterioration in prospects for the the euro area economy. The cost of living crisis is hitting consumers’ pockets hard. Europe’s manufacturing sector is contracting while momentum in the services sector is slowing. To make matters worse, wholesale energy prices have soared to all-time highs in Europe as Russia throttles gas supplies.
As a broad asset class underlying the full spectrum of economic activity and a non-cyclical slant, infrastructure debt has attributes that stand out for investors. One key point is that many of the services financed with these bonds are indexed, protecting cash flows from rising inflation. Also, the debt typically has floating rate coupons that are adjusted when interest rates rise.
Base effects, lower (or less high) energy and raw materials prices and a broad economic slowdown later in the year may see eurozone inflation stabilise or retreat towards the end of 2023. However, for now, an inflation-busting ECB will likely keep its foot on the monetary policy brake and could soon even raise policy rates by a chunky 75bp rather than the more widely expected 50bp.
In the race to feed a growing world population effectively as well as develop environmentally sustainable crop protection solutions, messenger RNA technology – the basis for many successful Covid vaccines – looks particularly promising. Applications can eventually extend to biological solutions for other zoonotic diseases, but also chronic and genetic illnesses.
Senior investment specialist for global equities Ramon Esteruelas briefs chief market strategist Daniel Morris on four books he has read on climate change. The books discuss the relevance of climate change science and the reliability of projections, the availability of adaptive and mitigating solutions and breakthroughs, the long road to net zero, and the need for a rethink on growth.
Until recently, humanity has relied on chemical solutions to address its biggest challenges. For example, our ability to grow food, to defend livestock against disease and to safeguard human health, all depend in part on chemical solutions. Today is no different. Yet resistance to chemicals is rising rapidly, exacerbated by climate change and ecosystem degradation. In the second of this series, Ulrik Fugmann and Edward Lees, co-heads of our Environmental Strategies Group, talk to Andrey Zarur, CEO and co-founder of GreenLight Biosciences, about how his company is using RNA technology to create a new generation of chemical free pest control methods. They consider the benefits of such innovations including enhanced food and biodiversity security, as well as the growing role investors can play in this area. The uncapped impact series brings you up close and personal with our Environmental Strategies Group and businesses that, regardless of their size, are making a big impact.
While day-to-day ‘market noise’ may feature big in many investors’ minds, it is worth mining long-term structural trends as well for opportunities. Cloud computing is one such trend, offering many advantages to both public and private sector users of its services and to investors looking for a billion-dollar industry where growth is still in the early stages.
Listen to this Talking heads podcast with Christophe Montcerisier, head of real estate debt, and chief market strategist Daniel Morris. They discuss the absence of a direct and immediate link between higher interest rates and the performance of real estate debt and the defensive characteristics of the asset class. Among other things, its solidity derives from some of the pandemic-induced structural changes, including a shift in office use and greater demand for suburban properties.
Listen to this Talking heads podcast with senior portfolio managers David Favier and Olivier Boutoille and Daniel Morris, chief market strategist. They firstly discuss the current market environment before focusing on the advantages of investing in these floating rate instruments that offer varied risk/returns profiles for investors.
In private markets, investing in loans can offer investors attractive features including a low correlation to listed markets and opportunities for a diversified exposure. Picking loans from sectors known to be resilient to the vagaries of economic growth or that have pricing power can result in a portfolio with the potential to withstand rising interest rates and inflation.
Food security has shot to the top of the agenda for governments and economists, but also investors. The war in Ukraine has highlighted the fragility of cross-border supply chains and countries’ dependence on food imports. More localised production is one potential answer, another is vertical integration to reduce a food company’s vulnerability to the whims of external sources.
The rapid growth in sustainability investing in recent decades has bolstered the need for greater transparency as investors increasingly want to know where and how sustainably their money is invested. MiFID II and other regulations have taken on more of a sustainability focus to improve the flow of information from issuers, distributors and asset managers.u
In an investment environment laden with challenges from rising interest rates to a possible global slowdown, listed real estate comes with advantageous features such as inflation-resilient cash flows and better liquidity than bricks and mortar. As such, listed real estate is a portfolio diversifier offering investors attractive risk-adjusted returns over the long haul.
Investing with a view to a sustainable future has often focused on environmental and governance issues – the ‘E’ and ‘G’ of ESG. However, the path towards a more inclusive society means social factors should be considered more actively as well, argues Delphine Riou, ESG analyst and Inclusive Growth lead, as she points out the significance of the ‘S’ for social in achieving sustainable corporate performance.
Disruption of supply chains is just one factor investors in new technologies currently have to contend with. A fundamental reevaluation of the outlook for US interest rates and as a consequence, the pricing of growth stocks, is another. Pamela Hegarty, disruptive technology portfolio manager, talks about how the themes she sees shaping future technological trends provide her with reference points in assessing today’s opportunities and risks.
Private equity impact investing offers investors access to an attractive asset class that can help diversify a portfolio and earn attractive returns. In addition, it offers an extra-financial component by enabling them to contribute – and help finance – solutions to pressing social and environmental problems from access to healthcare to promoting a circular economy.
US small-cap stocks are trading near 10-year lows on various metrics, which disregards their typical resilience in periods of rising interest rates and slower economic growth.
In early March, Chinese policymakers announced economic growth of around 5.5% would be targeted for 2022. Since then, a number of headwinds have led to doubts China’s GDP growth will reach 5%. In this podcast, we explain why we believe Chinese policymakers have both the intention and the means to counter factors potentially slowing growth in the world’s second-largest economy.
Value investing remains a worthwhile approach, even after an extended period of underperformance. A rebound has now set in that looks sustainable. Rising interest rates should be supportive of the value style and value still looks cheap relative to growth.
Foreign exchange (FX) markets can be viewed as a derivative asset in that they tend to be driven by volatility in other asset markets. Since 2015, most of the leading currencies have traded in relatively confined ranges. With volatility rising in equity, bond and commodity markets, there are good reasons to expect a new regime in currency markets.
Inflation has bounced back vigorously from its pandemic-era lows: The headline rate for the US consumer price index has reached a 40-year high, while in the eurozone, the headline rate for the harmonised index of consumer prices is at its highest in 20 years. What does this mean for investors?
To help multi-asset portfolios cope with the geopolitical shock of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a move into cash can be useful. At BNP Paribas Asset Management, we have implemented such an approach to ride the recent market volatility and use bounces to sell assets whose fortunes have now changed and build or expand other, more defensive positions at attractive prices.
Global bond markets already faced challenging times before the conflict in Ukraine, but they at least had a clear expectation to work with: the prospect of firm central bank action to tackle rising inflation. Geopolitical developments have upended the calculus, undermining inflation and growth forecasts and weakening the fundamentals across the board for the foreseeable future.
Global markets have seen wide swings as concerns over tighter supplies and crimped trade in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine caused investors to head for safe havens away from risk assets. However, Guy Davies, chief investment officer for fundamental active equities, advises against impulsive action and argues for a focus on cash flows when picking promising stocks.

Heightened market volatility and uncertainty over the pace at which the ECB will unwind its bond purchases are the main tests investors in European corporate bonds have to contend with currently. Mitigating factors such as robust earnings, strong cash positions and low defaults could be negated by concerns the central bank might need to take tougher action to contain inflation.
Investing in water-related stocks means tapping into a multi-decade opportunity for growth and innovation. Demand in this segment stretches across the breadth of the economy – from tackling ageing water infrastructure to ensuring healthy drinking water and efficient waste water treatment.
Chinese equities look well set to confront the challenges that Omicron, stricter regulation and moderating growth will bring. Revised earnings expectations and valuations mean their second-half prospects are brighter. Looser fiscal and monetary policies have the potential to provide a further uplift for sentiment.
In a contrarian call, our emerging market debt team sees appealing opportunities in EM bonds. Specifically in those markets where inflation is likely to peak ahead of developed markets in which investors are having to adjust to the prospect of higher real yields. EM segments that were oversold late last year also represent areas worth investor attention as a recovery takes hold.
Our Environmental Strategies Group talk to businesses that, regardless of their size, are making a big impact. In the first of this series we speak to John Berger, CEO of Sunnova Energy International, a residential solar and energy storage company, about the energy transition and the role investors can play in fighting climate change.
The prospect of a momentous pivot in US monetary policy with gradual withdrawal of the generous provision of liquidity has left markets pondering over valuations. Investors face a challenging year in which they will need to search for assets suited to a new inflationary regime. On our Talking heads podcast, Daniel Morris, chief market strategist, and Andrew Craig, co-head of the Investment Insights centre, discuss the outlook for fixed income, the promise of emerging market debt (and currencies), the prospects for corporate bonds, and the areas of – longer-term – interest once equity valuations have normalised.
To tackle poverty, climate change and improved access to, for example, education, central banks and governments need to rethink fiscal policy and the impact of deficit spending. Trillions of US dollars are required to achieve these goals. Alex Bernhardt, global head of sustainability research, talks about how it could be done.
At first sight, tighter US monetary policy and stubbornly high US inflation does not seem an ideal mix for bonds. There’s a lot more to it than that, argues James McAlevey, head of multi-sector fixed income. By embracing a broad opportunity set, investors can benefit from the potential for attractive risk-adjusted returns offered via active allocation.
The set-up for financial markets is more challenging in 2022, especially for core government bonds and fully valued equities, given the prospect of higher interest rates. In our new Talking heads podcast, Maya Bhandari gives her analysis of what this means for asset allocation.
Stronger economic fundamentals and vaccination progress mean the 2022 outlook for Asian equities, and more broadly global emerging market equities, is rosier now than it was at this time a year ago, argues Zhikai Chen, head of Asian equities.
Leaving behind a momentous year marked by new phases of the pandemic and by sputtering efforts to re-start the global economy, we look ahead to 2022. Can we overcome the effects of issues such as disrupted supply chains and shifts in consumer demand? How can investors navigate the ‘rapids’ that will characterise the next stages of the economic recovery?
The recent UN climate change conference in Glasgow has if anything brought a broader focus on environmental issues and added to the growing awareness and momentum behind the need for positive change, argue Edward Lees and Ulrik Fugmann of the Environmental Strategies Group. Here they identify promising sectors and present their approach to sustainable investing.
The results of the recent COP26 climate change conference fall into the glass half full, glass half empty category. The onus now is on greater efforts to adapt to higher global temperatures as work on mitigating the temperature rise continues, says Alex Bernhardt, global head of sustainability research.
It has been a challenging year for investors in emerging markets – equities have lagged their developed market counterparts, EM debt has delivered a mixed performance. Covid outbreaks have hampered the economic recovery, while questions have arisen over China’s role as the engine of growth for EM exporters.
Confronted with low, but rising rates and frothy equity valuations, large investors are having to look elsewhere for investments offering both attractive long-run returns and modest to low volatility. Julien Halfon, head of pensions and corporate solutions, discusses the appeal of investing in private markets and harvesting the illiquidity premium while incorporating ESG selection criteria.
Listen to the podcast with Julien Halfon on investment solutions for insititutional investors at a time when low and rising interest rates and market volatility present challenges.
Globalisation, regulation and deregulation, digitalisation and innovation are playing an important role in reshaping economies, sectors and industries and these megatrends are creating thematic investment opportunities for investors. Koye Somefun, head of multi-asset solutions, sets out the characteristics of this approach and discusses the criteria investors should look at.
At first glance, bond markets these days may look like deserts – there is little or no yield on offer with large patches appearing barren or even offering only negative yields. That is to ignore a plethora of opportunities, argues Jean-Paul Chevé, head of the Fixed Income Insurance Team within the Specialty Fixed Income Product Group.
Investors with China exposure, or an appetite for it, face a raft of issues ranging from slower growth, which may or may not be condoned by Beijing, to toughened and expanded clampdowns on sectors. Add in persistent Sino-US tensions over geopolitics and a revitalised focus on greater common prosperity and this cocktail begs the question: How best to judge the outlook for China? Chi Lo, Senior Market Strategist APAC, puts the latest developments into context, voicing his confidence that sentiment towards the world’s second-largest economy will improve.
Convertible bonds are hybrid instruments combining bond and equity characteristics. As a result, they offer some equity upside, but with bond-like protection on the downside. If we are at the start of a cycle of rising interest rates, the option investors in these nominal assets (bonds) hold to convert to real assets (equities) could prove invaluable.
The S&P 500 stock index ended September down by 4.8%, its first monthly drop since January and the largest fall since March 2020. Vincent Nichols, investment specialist for US equities, reviews recent events and the outlook for US stocks.
At the centre of a pandemic-induced boom, stern regulation efforts and forays into new turf, the technology sector is making almost daily headlines and requires robust research to separate the possibilities from the pitfalls, argues Pamela Hegarty, lead portfolio manager with a focus on information technology and communication services.
Uncertainty over the macroeconomic landscape and the outlook for monetary policy currently combine with an awareness among investors that by many measures, valuations in public markets are on the high side. David Bouchoucha, head of our private debt and real assets team, talks about the characteristics that make private debt an attractive alternative.
What will be the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic for the food and agriculture sector? How is the transition towards more sustainable food production and consumption affected? Agne Rackauskaite, co-portfolio manager of Impax Asset Management’s sustainable food strategy, gives investors her view on the post-pandemic outlook.
It is a win-win for companies to target the social aspects of doing business, next to environmental responsibility and proper governance, and it can be so for investors as well, argues senior portfolio manager Maria Luz Diaz Blanco.
In mid-June, Fed Chair Jay Powell pulled the rug from beneath the reflation trade by suggesting current inflation pressures were perhaps not transitory after all. Fixed income markets promptly reversed course with 10-year US Treasury yields last week trading as low as 1.25% after ending the first quarter at 1.70%. In this week’s podcast, Olivier de Larouziere, chief investment officer fixed income, explains what remains of the 2021 reflation trade.

While many parts of the economy had to shut down as the coronavirus pandemic raged, the lights stayed on, water flowed from taps and internet connections buzzed. The crisis has highlighted the importance of the underlying infrastructure and, as Karen Azoulay explains, it was a useful reminder of the solidity of infrastructure debt as an asset class.
Listen to the podcast with Karen Azoulay, head of infrastructure debt.
Addressing ecosystem restoration is just as pressing as tackling CO2 emissions and can generate billions of dollars of investment opportunities, as Ulrik Fugmann and Edward Lees, co-heads of the Environmental Strategies Group, explain.
Emerging market equities offer investors a wide range of diversification opportunities across economies with a solid post-pandemic growth profile that include, but also stretch beyond, China and the wider Asian region. Quang Nguyen, head of global emerging market equities, argues the case for a broad perspective and active portfolio management.
Thanks to central bank largesse, corporate bond markets weathered the depth of the Covid crisis well. Risks to credit markets today appear low with gradually improving fundamentals, neutral central bank policy and no major supply-demand imbalances.
On account of the region’s strong economic growth, Asia has a considerable impact on climate change, but at the same time is, perhaps disproportionately, exposed to its effects. That makes engaging with companies and working with the authorities all the more important for investors such as BNP Paribas Asset Management. Paul Milon, Head of stewardship Asia Pacific, explains.
Fund flows to date have massively favoured US equities, but European equities now have considerable scope to catch up as the economic recovery broadens and investors reassess their valuations relative to their more expensive US counterparts. Peter Abbott, European equities portfolio manager, shares his views.
Climate change and pollution are among the factors reducing biodiversity. The result is considerable damage to society and the economy. Robert-Alexandre Poujade, ESG analyst at our Sustainability Centre, warns not to underestimate the consequences of biodiversity loss and underscores the role investors can play in the battle to contain and reverse current trends.
The economic recovery should broaden into a synchronised global upturn in the course of the second half of this year, favouring risky assets including commodities, equities generally and notably emerging market equities. An equity correction should be seen as a buying opportunity, argues Christophe Moulin, Head of Multi Asset.
Inflation has been quiescent in developed economies in recent years. Today, the possibility that we may be on the brink of a secular shift away from the low-flation regime is a topic of intense debate among investors. Nowhere is this more so than in the US where the abundance of fiscal and monetary support is seen by some as irresponsible in creating risks of an inflationary shock. Cedric Scholtes, Head of Global Sovereign, Inflation and Rates, discusses the outlook.
Being open to an inclusive growth approach goes hand in hand with a focus on long-term performance and contributes to a better climate for doing business and investment. As investment specialist Ramon Esteruelas and ESG research analyst Delphine Riou argue, it is also good for profitability and can help mitigate business risk.
Long-term growth trends and innovation continue to create demand for healthcare at a rate that exceeds the pace of economic growth. Jon Stephenson, portfolio manager for healthcare stocks discusses the factors behind rising healthcare expenditure, the impact of the pandemic and the outlook for the sector.
Green bonds have grown and matured as a fixed-income segment over the past decade. The need for climate action has spurred a raft of green projects and activities that combat climate change and other environmental challenges and seek to contribute to a net zero world. Felipe Gordillo and Xuan Sheng Ou Yong answer four questions on this growing market and its outlook.
The outlook for US interest rates is shifting towards a normalisation of central bank policy now that the economic recovery appears to be entrenched. Ken O’Donnell, head of short duration fixed income, discusses how investors could tackle this challenge.
Asian equities rode high early in the year amid optimism over the recovery in China, the new US administration and improved relations with China, and the advent of vaccines. The outlook for investor flows into much of the region remains positive, even after a recent valuation-related setback. Zhikai Chen, head of Asian equities, discusses the prospects for the asset class this year.
