One of the most awkward and painful parts of grieving, one of those sneaky little things no one warns you about, is that you lose yourself to the grief. It’s as if parts of you died, too. You forget your strengths, your passions, and the things that used to bring you joy. And as you start to come out of the fog of the initial grief storm, you realize you have to rediscover who you were and decide who you’ll be.

When the calendar changed from 2022 to 2023, many people took a deep breath, let out a sigh, and wished things were different. While others were brainstorming resolutions or picking a word to focus their intentions on, those of us who have experienced loss were accepting the fact that we were entering yet another year without loved ones. What do you do when a new year is less of a fresh start and more of a reminder that you’re bringing grief into the new year with you?

Feeling in control can give us an illusion of being safe. Safe from loss. Safe from trauma. Safe from feeling any bad feelings. And when - despite our best efforts - we can’t predict or control everything that happens to us, we feel like we’ve failed or (worse) that we are the failure itself. It’s an exhausting, defeating cycle that can leave you wondering if being an adult means being either in control or a complete failure. There’s got to be a better way.

Rachel Scott of Better Than Blended works with couples who are blending families together after divorce, death, and adoption. Rachel knows from experience (from growing up in a blended family and being a parent of one) that it takes a lot of intention and humility to go from brokenness to unity. It's easy to feel rejected by step-kids, but as she learned to focus on the kids' needs instead of what her role as step-mom "should" be, she found that trust began to develop. She has seen laughter in her new family and they take regular family days to continue to invest in relationships. She encourages families in the process of blending to pursue authenticity, keep their marriage the priority, and remember that these challenges are temporary.
Rachel's answers to the fun questions:
• What are you loving right now? Getting to do the everyday things with the kids (and without exhaustion) because she gets to work from home
• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Sweet potato pie
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Reading. Specifically, The Magnolia Story and Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus
• What are you doing to be brave? Connecting with people she wouldn't normally talk to

When Sarah's oldest was nine months old, she started showing signs of food allergies. At first it was only hives, but on her 5th birthday, Sarah's daughter had her first anaphylactic reaction. Through allergy testing, Sarah and her husband discovered their child was facing seven severe food allergies. Sarah's anxiety levels skyrocketed as they began learning to navigate the realities of life threatening allergies. The biggest struggle was learning how to manage her own fears without projecting them onto her children. In the years since her daughter's diagnosis, Sarah has developed a strong community with other allergy families and is amazed at how her daughter has learned to see and embrace differences in other children. Sarah strongly encourages families of kids with food allergies to find a community of people who understand the specific challenges and that it's okay to be neurotic.
Sarah's answers to the fun questions:
• What are you loving right now? Embroidery
• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Lots of new baking recipes
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Not much, but trying to get the toddler to sleep earlier (see Becky's Pinterest board for self care ideas)
• What are you doing to be brave? Parenting three kids and learning to be a wife to a husband who travels for work

In the dark place, Elli says, "you feel like a failure and that things are never going to get better, but those are both lies."

When Katie was pregnant with her first child, she was diagnosed with OCD and signed herself in to an inpatient treatment program. Her OCD was mostly triggered by her career as a nurse (although in hindsight she can see signs of it in childhood memories) and the symptoms were completely incapacitating. Katie says that even though she hates having OCD, she's thankful that she can connect with other people who are suffering and that having a diagnosis gives her hope that she won't ever go to the uncontrolled dark place again.

Jenny and her husband Matt have both struggled with depression at different times. As a college student, Jenny was depressed, but didn't exhibit the typical symptoms, so it took a survey at a college mental health fair to realize something wasn't right. Years later, Jenny and Matt were married, had two babies, and moved cross country for a job. The stress of change, plus some undiagnosed health issues, added a tremendous amount of tension to their marriage. Lifestyle changes, counseling, medication, and better self care continue to help them avoid going to the dark place again.
Join Jenny and me at the Brave Together Virtual Retreat from your couch on Saturday 9/9.

Leah writes about marriage, not because she has all (or many) of the answers, but because her and her husband Matt have faced a serious season of crisis in their marriage. Leah said she wasn't nagging, but she spent a lot of time complaining about life. They faced health problems, had a new baby, were sleep deprivation, fought colic, and spent a lot of complaining and arguing. They chose to learn from the experience and now work together to help other couples make intentional choices to care for each other and nurture their marriage.
Leah's Answers To The Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? 5yo reading independently, 3yo adult in a little boy's body, 16mo ham, spring in Tennessee, and getting to work with her husband.
• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? All the things (she's pregnant), but especially Chipotle. (Leah's favorite Chipotle hacks: https://www.buzzfeed.com/dartanionlondon/how-to-hack-your-chipotle-order?utm_term=.jv3oExg442#.okP64rEGGq)
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Joined a gym!
• What are you doing to be brave? Writing a book (buy your copy here: https://theredoakcollective.com/collections/all-products/products/intentional-love-31-ways-marriage-bundle?aff=15)

Almost 20 years ago, Kelli was a nurse and addicted to prescription pain killers. She had experimented with drugs and alcohol as a teenager, but experienced a greater high from the medication she took as an adult for TMJ than she ever did as a drunk teen. She kept her addiction a secret from her family and coworkers because she was afraid of losing her job, her marriage, and other relationships. Eventually, Kelli had to take a leave of absence and then go through a probational period in her nursing job while she got sober. As she fought for sobriety, Kelli found grace in books with stories about people living through hard things, a new job with better pay, her husband who did not leave her, and learning to have a relationship with God, not just learn about him. Kelli uses her story now to encourage people that you can't pick an addict out of a crowd; no one is immune to addiction. She continues to be brave as she is transparent with her experience and wants people struggling with addiction now to know, "you are not alone, this does not define you, and you are loved."
Kelli's Answers To The Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? Currently reading No More Faking Fine by Esther Fleece
• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Sautéed veggies with mashed cauliflower
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Changing to a healthier way of eating and going to the gym
• What are you doing to be brave? Interviewing for new jobs and taking trips

Caroline, writer of the In Due Time devotional and leader of the Moms in the Making infertility groups, has faced a tremendous number of challenges over the last decade. She was diagnosed with disembarkment syndrome, a vertigo-like neurological condition, lost her two-year-old nephew to a pediatric brain cancer, and has faced unexpected infertility. In all of the grief and lost expecatations, Caroline is remarkably positive. She says that infirtility is, "grieving the idea of what you thought your life would look like," which is hard and messy and painful, but even in the middle of the pain, she chooses to believe that God is still good. Caroline sees grace in God's presence and her experiencing peace, joy, and freedom even while life is hard. She chooses to be brave by being vulnerable, open, and honest with her story and her struggles. Caroline encourages others who are waiting or are discouraged to remember that God is good and that challenging times in life can help refine and develop our character. Anna LeBaron escaped from a polygamist cult when she was 13. Her new book, The Polygamist's Daughter details what it was like to grow up in such an abusive and traumatic environment. Anna was child 40-something of 50 to polygamist cult leader Ervil LeBaron. She grew up in an incredibly unstable environment and felt safe almost nowhere. She was abused physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally and was being groomed to continue in the polygamist practice from a very young age. After she escaped, she saw grace in her sister and brother-in-law who protected her and provided a safe place for her to begin to heal. She attended a small Christian school that helped her ease into life outside of the cult. She is thankful for her five children, the siblings who have continued to support her, and all of the things that lined up for her book to become a reality. Pursuing healing, wholeness, and freedom has required a tremendous amount of courage. As Anna says, "healing is a process. Healing is a miracle." Healing from abuse and trauma is a life-long journey and Anna encourages victims of all kinds of abuse and trauma to ask for help and to seek counseling. Order your copy of Anna's new book The Polygamist's Daughter wherever you get your books!

• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Fruit, nuts, cheese, and coffee (with cream)

Niki found herself with a rectal cancer diagnosis only a few short years after losing both her mother and sister to different cancers. She knew her disease was not terminal, but the diagnosis was enough for her to be faced with very real fears and a lot of anger. Her family had only moved to the United States two years earlier, so they were still building community when she was diagnosed and they certainly felt like outsiders with their obvious British accents. Niki and her husband decided to handle the situation with complete vulnerability: they were honest with their kids and talked openly with the congregation where her husband was the pastor. They coped with humor and had to make difficult decisions about how they would fight for their marriage or allow the stress to drive them apart. Niki saw grace as she realized how known and loved they were by their community in North Carolina - they were surprised by how deeply people cared for them and were willing to step into the mess cancer had created in their life. Niki is cancer free now and continues to live vulnerably and openly and lean into the the hard stuff; even though vulnerability can feel like weakness, she no longer believes that "if you're strong, nothing is wrong." Niki wants to encourage people who are facing a huge challenge in life to remember that you don't "have to wait to feel joy or beauty again...There's joy and beauty in the middle of it." She encourages leaders to model authenticity and be intentional about helping people and stresses the importance of helping leaders by initiating doing kind and helpful things.
Niki's Answers To The Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? Coaching her daughter's lacrosse team.
• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? A cup of tea with a flapjack (an English granola bar). Try Niki's flapjack recipe at NikiHardy.com/recipes
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Not enough. Trail running with the dogs and reading when she leaves time.
• What are you doing to be brave? A podcast! Writing and blogging with vulnerability (and thankful for groups like Hope*Writers that encourage and support community)

When I was pregnant with my daughter, my husband was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma. We knew the prognosis was not good, so we decided to have many uncomfortable conversations about what this fight would look like together and after he was gone. It was heart wrenching to make those kinds of decisions, but I'm so glad that we did. From the moment Keith experienced his first symptom to the time he passed away, it had only been three months. It was shocking and emotionally complicated since I had a two-year-old to care for and a baby that wasn't due for another month. I spent the month between his death and Libby's birth in a dark and angry place. I had lots of questions and very freely told God that he had messed up. And then Libby was born and light started shining through the cracks in my heart; this little baby reminded me that there was good and there was hope, even when my heart was so very broken. We experienced so much grace in the months Keith was sick and after he died. People brought food, cared for the kids, and cleaned my house. My kids brought laughter to our house. Being widowed and a single mom was never the plan for my life, but the grace, the good things, remind me that there is hope and that my story isn't over.
Becky's Fun Question Answers:
• What are you loving right now? Golden Girls on Hulu!
• What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Queso (always) and Underwood Cellars' Pinot Noir
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Bubble baths and glasses of wine when I make the time for it. Waking up an hour before the kids to have time for myself.
• What are you doing to be brave? Getting to know who I am and living confidently based on my strengths and weaknesses (especially not being ashamed of my weaknesses)

It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 episodes. I started this podcast wanting to give people an avenue to share their stories of struggle and grace, but I wasn’t sure what the reaction would be. It’s been particularly challenging to share my own story because the vulnerability scares me; is it worth risking my comfort and is anyone even listening or reading? Now that it’s the end of the first season, I felt it was appropriate to share how I’ve had to choose to live bravely even when I didn’t feel like it. My friend Heather Bender from episode 7 interviewed me from our hotel room at the Hope*Writers Workshop and we shared thoughts on being vulnerable as a writer, the fears all creatives face, and some projects I’ve been working on. She’s an ENFP and I’m an INFJ (for all you Meyers Briggs fans), but we magically make a great team.
Becky's Answers To The Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? Being at the Hope*Writers Workshop and having the space and time to dream
• What’s your favorite food at the moment? Cherry Oat Bars at Starbucks at East Coast Taco
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Making time for reading and waking up before the kids
• What are you doing to be brave? Taking time off from writing and podcasting to give my brain a break

Meet Adrienne, an adoptive mom and autism advocate. Her family watched as two international adoptions fell through and they lost all of the money they had saved to put towards those children. They decided to take a break from trying to add to their family since their infertility issues and adoption disappointments were devastating. After they moved to another Air Force base and her husband had deployed, she got a phone call from their social worker, saying a family had picked them to adopt their baby. Adrienne and her daughter drove nine hours to pick up the baby when he was born and seven months later, her husband returned from deployment and they loved every moment of being a “complete” family. Around her son Jonah’s first birthday, Adrienne got pregnant and they moved again. Shortly afterwards, Jonah started exhibiting developmental delays and was diagnosed with autism. Adrienne saw grace in the support she received from her friends and family through emails, texts, and prayers through figuring out Jonah’s needs. Adrienne encourages people dealing with a child’s difficult diagnosis to find a support group that can help you identify the next right steps for you and your child. “It’s okay to be sad,” Adrienne says, when life doesn’t turn out how you expect.
Adrienne's Answers To The Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? Beth Moore’s novel “The Undoing of Saint Silvanus” and Kimberly Williams Paisley’s memoir “Where the Light Gets In”
• What’s your favorite food at the moment? Anything chocolate and pumpkin in the fall, especially pumpkin spice muffins (a box of spice cake mix and a can of pumpkin baked per instructions for cupcakes on box)
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Making time for exercise
• What are you doing to be brave? Being a diplomat for Jonah at school and working as a team with his teachers

Meet Tracey, author of “Out of the Darkroom, Into the Light: A Story of Faith and Forgiveness after Child Abuse.” At a young age, she was a victim of abuse and grew up with an alcoholic parent. Tracey was ashamed of her family and experienced a lot of guilt and fear. She estranged herself from them and eventually started going to counseling. Through all of the struggles of her growing up years, Tracey says she hoped there was a God and that he would get her through it. The more she got to know about God, the more she experienced forgiveness, restored relationships, and found a community to help her parent and establish a family that did not reflect her own childhood. As a child and young adult, Tracey “struggled with wanting to be loved” and encourages other victims of abuse that they do not need to suffer alone. “Don’t give up,” she tells them, “Find someone you can tell.”

Meet Della, a bubbly former ballroom dancing instructor, who moved to Connecticut from North Carolina with her husband, only to be facing a divorce soon after. Adding insult to injury, Della had a severe pulmonary embolism (a blockage of blood flow to the lungs) as a complication of her cystic fibrosis (CF). She didn’t handle all of the changes well and even attempted suicide. Now, Della is living with her parents, taking care of herself, and learning what unconditional love really means. The biggest thing Della has learned through these challenges is who God really is. Being a Christian, Della explained, is much more about relationships than it is about saying the right things or acting the right way. She wants people to know that it’s okay to “take God into a boxing ring and then out for ice cream” because he can handle the reality of our lives. Her advice for people handling significant amounts of change or struggling with living a life that’s less than what they dreamed of is “don’t give up and take your time,” learn to love and accept yourself, find a counselor, and spend time praying.
Della's Answers To The Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? Love Does by Bob Goff
• What’s your favorite meal right now? Sushi and Chipotle
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Doing all her CF treatments, leaving the house, and being open and honest with people
• What are you doing to be brave? Giving herself permission to love herself, her life, and God

Meet Debbie, a mom of four and fitness and nutrition expert, who lost her husband in a sudden, tragic accident. While her and her four sons were on vacation, her husband stayed home to work on some projects. When she hadn’t heard from him all day, she began to get nervous. After sending out an official search party, his body was found in the woods near the school where he worked. Debbie was suddenly forced to learn to live and parent without her husband. Debbie has seen grace through cards, gift cards, and prayers from strangers and encourages those who are grieving to “feel the feelings”. Even after getting remarried, Debbie says her grief hasn’t disappeared, but she’s thankful that her husband is a long-time family friend who can help her boys learn about their dad.
Debbie's Answers To The Fun Questions:

Jen, Nina, and I recorded this episode during our live podcast even September 3, 2016. It’s an honor to help these brave women share their stories of grace during times of transition. Nina is a mom of two wonderful girls, one with her and one in heaven, and has just transitioned to staying home after 16 years of working. It’s hard to not be seeing the students she’s worked with for the last several years as a speech therapist, but she is excited to be home with baby Lennox and spend the time caring for her, since she did not get that time with her first daughter, Audie. Nina finds grace everywhere in her more simpler life and is thankful for this season. Jen, on the other hand, has added a baby, a small business, and homeschooling responsibilities to her life this year. While her life may be crazier than it was before, Jen is glad for how enriched their lives are. She says their family is more busy with three little girls, a business, and homeschooling, but they are having so much fun.

Meet Amy, a mom of three and writer at Carried By Hope, who discovered her husband had an affair while deployed. They were living abroad at the time and spend months working towards reconciliation. Several months later, her husband had another affair and asked for her to leave. Amy and her kids came back to the United States for the summer and ended up moving in with her parents to start their new life when her husband asked for a divorce. Amy says life was surreal and she felt like a failure. She describes divorce as “a lot like death, but with no real closure” and found comfort in hymns, scripture, and a divorce group. James Dobson’s book Love Must Be Tough helped her to find healthy perspective. Since becoming a single parent, Amy spends time journaling all of the ways that their needs have been met. Her favorite story came from when she went back to school and didn’t have the money she needed for textbooks: she gave the money she had as a gift to her church and, on the way out, was given a financial gift that covered her needs. When it comes to other people facing infidelity and divorce, she wants people to know “you’re not alone. It feels very lonely…but you’re not alone…The end of your marriage is not the end of your happily ever after.”
Amy's Answers to the Fun Questions:
• What are you loving right now? Hamilton soundtrack
• What’s your favorite meal right now? A good burger with sweet potato fries (especially at any local place)
• What are you doing to take care of yourself? Taking Sundays off
• What are you doing to be brave? Sharing her story

Meet Christina, writer at Laughter Without Fear and host of Minivan Confessions, who had a challenging child as the daughter of a mom with several mental illnesses. When Christina was four, her dad had a heart attack and she and her siblings were placed into foster care because of her mom’s bipolar disorder, learning disabilities, and schizoaffective disorder. Without reason, Christina was placed back in the care of her mother even though her siblings remained in the foster care system. As she grew up, Christina realized that her relationship with her mom was not like those of her friends and their moms. As a teenager, she resented the fact that they didn’t have the bond she expected and was embarrassed by her mother’s hoarding tendencies. After attending a seminar on mental illness at the Cornerstone Music Festival, Christina realized that people who struggle with mental illnesses need a tremendous amount of compassion and she began to learn more about her mom’s particular struggles. Christina sees grace throughout her life in the strong support system she grew up with and in learning to trust God with her life details. Difficult seasons in life, she says, are merely plot twists and not the ending.
Christina's Answers to the Fun Questions:

Meet Maretha, a writer and mom, who competed in Junior Wimbledon as a teenager. Maretha was born with ectrodactyly, a genetic condition that means her left hand only has a thumb and pinkie finger. The disability is often called a “lobster hand” and also affects her heart. Since her right hand seemed to be unaffected, she became a successful tennis player and qualified for Junior Wimbledon. Not long into competition, however, she had trouble with her right hand. She discovered that, even though it didn’t look affected by ectrodctyly, her right hand couldn’t keep up with the demands of her tennis career because of her disability. She began to question why God would allow her tennis career to end when she was so successful. She felt angry and lost and wondered if she had worth without tennis. In an attempt to achieve a new standard of perfection, she became bulimic. Eventually, Maretha says she realized that God had made her to be more than just a professional tennis player and the grace, she says, is that he let her figure it out in her own time.
