The Day of Pentecost
In the last few weeks, we’ve been looking at God’s significant works. Two weeks ago, we looked at Jesus’ ascension after spending 40 days with his disciples. In heaven, he was given back his glory after his ascension. Before his ascension, Jesus told his disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit. This happened on the day of Pentecost.
Acts 1:4-5 NIV – [4] On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. [5] For John baptized with water, but in a few days, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
This scripture is repeated in the Bible 6 times. It is very important.

Who am I? My Identity Part 2Dealing with the Orphan HeartNavaz shared this message on June 1st 2025, at Word of Grace Church Pune, a Born Again, Believer’s, English-speaking community.
We are all uniquely shaped, with different personalities and temperaments. We are also gifted differently by His manifold grace. Last week, we examined our identity and how God has shaped us for a larger purpose than just ourselves. God’s design for us is to be a part of a much bigger and grander design. So, no matter what we do in life, it all fits into an eternal purpose. Our job is to discover what part we play in God’s master plan.
Some things to keep in mind:
For a Christ follower, there is no secular and sacred divide: everything we do has a purpose. Also, God has shaped each one of us uniquely, and we need to celebrate our differences: the introverts, the extroverts, the planners, the spontaneous, the thinkers, the feelers, the intuitive, the rationalists. God made us all!!
Last week, we examined how, throughout life, we adopt false narratives of ourselves. We examined how the world’s worldviews and belief systems can infiltrate our Christian thought and mask themselves in Christian language. We examined how we all have broken identities, and our alienation from God the Father has created an orphaned planet.
We all carry a father wound that needs healing. Please listen to last Sunday’s message if you were not here last week.

Who am I? My Identity Part 1Navaz shared this message on April 27th, 2025, at Word of Grace Church Pune, a Born Again, Believer’s, English-speaking community.
What are some of the things that have shaped or formed your identity? Think back to your childhood, school days, neighbourhood, etc. For me I grew up in Bandra West, Mumbai, which was predominantly a Catholic, Goan, East Indian neighbourhood. What about you?
How many forms of ‘self’ have you gone through? X the sporty type, or the Nerd or the fighter or the joker or the bully, etc., etc.
These are all false selves we put on to cope with our environment and give us a sense of worth. It comes from what is affirmed by our culture, environment, family, education, and significant others say about you.
So, we are multidimensional beings; besides that, have a body, soul, and spirit. Life is not black and white and does not move in one straight line. Many things shape us, colour our lenses, and create filters for how we perceive information. For example, there is a yellow board, but if you look through red lenses, you will see orange; if you look through blue lenses, you will see green.
However, there is an identity which, when we find, we can truly begin to thrive, flourish and come into all that God has ordained for us. Before you dive into how to find our identity in Christ, we must first see what is wrong with the ones we have formed that are not shaped by Christ. We can’t fix what we don’t know is broken. Think about your life. There must be something significant in your life. Children remember their birthdays and married people remember their wedding anniversaries. We also remember historic events. Today we remember the greatest event in history – Jesus’ Resurrection. Why is it so important? This body that you see is just a shell. As we grow older, we lose some parts, and one day this body will be cast out. But that doesn’t end you. The real you is going to live forever. Where you live forever depends on Jesus’ Resurrection. One day we will also be resurrected, and that body will live forever with Jesus or suffer in hell forever. The Bible speaks about this. Last week we had seen the message of Jesus’ death. He gave up his life for us. It is finished. His work is finished. He died on the cross for our sins. This morning, I want to say that if you love Jesus, then nothing happens by chance.
If we are followers of Jesus, God makes everything beautiful at the right time. God has a great plan and good will for us which he is steadily bringing to pass.
If I tell you God’s will for you then that would make me a fortune teller. It is God who reveals His plans for you to you. I’m going to tell you how you can find God’s will for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV – [16] Rejoice always, [17] pray continually, [18] give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
Today I’m offering you a treasure which is the Joy of the Lord, a map to the treasure and a key to open the treasure which is gratitude.

the stone the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. There is a progressive revelation – the psalmist said it prophetically about the messiah, Jesus declared it about himself, and the disciples recognised that Christ is indeed the cornerstone and proclaimed to the church.

We are continuing our study on discipleship. As a recap let’s look at some of the things we discussed in the previous weeks:
Rom 12:9-17
How do we love one another? In Romans, Paul lays a foundation of doctrine in chapters 1 to 11.
Rom 3:20 Through the law, we become conscious of sin, but obeying the law does not make us right with God.
Ch3:21 But now righteousness apart from the law has been made known….but through Jesus to all who believe. Jesus changes us by his Spirit.
Ch1-3 Talks about the sinful state of man.
Ch4-8 Talks about how to get right with God
Ch 9-11 Talks about the role of Israel after Christ
And then comes chapter 12 with the big ‘therefore’.

Back to Basics Part 7 – A Disciple’s Call to Engage with the BrokenColin preached this message on July 28th 2024 at Word of Grace.
We are continuing our study on discipleship. As a recap let’s look at some of the things we discussed in the previous weeks:
Last week we saw 3 marks of the disciples –
- Holds onto the teachings of Jesus
- Love one another just as Jesus loved you
- Bear fruit
We see snapshots of Gospel in the lives of the disciples.
Matthew 9:9 NIV – As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
Jesus sees Matthew, a tax collector. His job is not a very good one as he collects tax from the Jews and gives to the Romans. Jesus says only two words, “Follow me.” Matthew immediately got up and followed Jesus.
Matthew received the effectual call through Holy Spirit. ( Read the notes)

Jesus gave this command to his disciples before his Ascension – “Go and make disciples…”
The home between his ascension and return is when we have a job to do.
There are 3 things that identify a disciple. All those can be found in the book of John. There are many amazing miracles performed by Jesus – fed 5000 people, raised Lazarus to life, the centurion’s servant, water into wine and many more.
Jesus also makes these “I am” statements. I am the light, the way, the truth, the life, the resurrection and life, bread of life, true Vine, good shepherd and door.
3 statements that Jesus said:
John 8:31-32 NIV – [31] To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. [32] Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
The truth will set you free. If you hold onto my teaching.

Matthew 4:19 “ come follow me and I will make you fishers of men” the end result of following Jesus is to become fishers of men.
What fishing for men means is to become and make disciples. In Genesis, God commanded Adam and Eve to fill the earth and subdue it. God wanted the world to be filled with image bearers of God who are in a right relationship with him. He still wants the same. It is repeated at the end of the gospels. ( Read the Notes)

Why Give?When we meet someone for the first and introduce ourselves, we don’t ask how much they earn. Even in church, nobody is comfortable in discussing money. The scriptures show that Jesus spoke a lot about money and possessions. Scholars found out that 15% of what Jesus spoke was about money. So, money must be important.
So blessed by the ones in Word of Grace church who have been giving like Macedonians.
Let us look at God’s Word and stir our hearts.

No church on Sunday?Some of you may be shocked that every year we close for two weeks during our hot Indian summer. Some of you might question if this is even right. Is it Biblical? These are all good questions that need an answer.
As Christ followers we are called to honour the Sabbath and that means taking a break from your regular work or source of employment ( income) so that you can rest and demonstrate your trust that God can and does supply all your needs. The Sabbath day differs depending upon which country you reside in. In the Middle East, the Sabbath is on Friday, while many other countries have Sunday as their holiday.
Traditionally one has used the Sabbath as a day to assemble as Christ’s followers as is commanded in Scripture. In Hebrews 10:25, we are encouraged not to give up the habit of meeting one another. It does not specify the day, time or manner of the meeting. Remember the early church met in people’s homes or courtyards. The manner of meeting has changed from courtyards to catacombs, to cathedrals, school halls to large auditoriums and so on. So when we do not congregate together in one place, Word of Grace has practised different ways of meeting viz in people’s homes etc.
Everyone needs a break! At Word of Grace, we rely on volunteers to do a lot of the work especially the set up and clear up for our Sunday meeting. This is a small group of our leaders ( all of whom have secular employment) and others who turn up two hours before the meeting for 50 weeks of the year to make sure the place is well set up for the congregation to have a comfortable experience. They also stay back for an hour after the service to clear the hall. They therefore dedicate approximately 6 hours every Sunday to making the Sunday meeting happen for all of us. I am sure you agree that they deserve a break from this routine to spend time with their family, and friends or go on a holiday. We are very grateful for their long years of faithful service and pray that God refreshes them during this time.
In the meantime – we encourage you to use the Sunday morning to have devotionals as a family, or join up with another family and enjoy some good times building your friendships which is an important part of church life. Pray for our leadership and serving teams to be refreshed during this time. Drop them a note of encouragement and appreciate them for their selfless hard work.

There are so many special days that we celebrate. In fact, the greeting card company is making a lot of business out of these special days. The original Mother’s Day holiday was celebrated hundreds of years ago. It originated in America when a woman by the name Anna Jarvis held a small memorial service for her own mother to express her gratitude for all the sacrifices she made for her daughter.
Mothers sacrifice a lot from the time they deliver a baby. Even though the delivery process is painful, it brings great joy when you hold the baby.

Easter is celebrated differently in different countries. Shopping, eating, playing, Easter eggs, Easter bunnies, etc. where do you get Easter from? This word has nothing to do with Christianity. It comes from the goddess of light Easter in pagan Anglo Saxon culture. Easter meant something like this then, but today the meaning we attribute to it is remembering the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.
