Question 1:
Hi Guys
I’m a veteran developer and recently joined a startup. I love writing code, and am fairly good at my job. What drives me crazy is the PMs at the company keep getting distracted with “shiny new object syndrome” They are always trying to find / trying the latest greatest tool and make us switch. It’s slowing down our dev time.. as the SOPs are always being re-written. As I’m new at the company.. what are some options to indicate this isn’t helping. -Carl
Question 2:
Hey guys —
So I am ready for a change as the company I work at is going through some changes which I won’t get into. That said, I’ve applied for a handful of jobs but am pretty consistent in getting reply “we’ve found someone who better fits our needs” email. Someone suggested that my resume may need tweaking and be tailored to each specific job posting. Do you have any options / thoughts on that practice? -Anonymous

Hey guys -
I’ve been offered an amazing job that is totally in my wheelhouse as a developer, with room to grow. The issue is, I found out that some in leadership/upper management are on the opposite side of the fence than me when it comes to social causes. If it were you, would you still take the job?
-Anonymous
Question 2:
I’m recently single (divorced) and haven’t had a “normal job” in a few years as my partner was the sole bread winner. That said, I’m looking for a job. My question is how would you explain a long gap in work history? -Jane Doe

Question 1:
So I recently took a job after going though the ringer.. i.e. a multitude of interviews and the dreaded “project” that many company’s require. In this case I actually wasn’t even paid for it.
That said.. the salary was negotiated, and an offer was made and I accepted. Sadly within a few days I just knew that I made a mistake. It’s now been 30 days.. and I’m kicking myself… Options on leaving by not burning a bridge. -Quinn

Question 1: Hey guys… I run a medium agency with a dozen FT employees. We are based in a mid-market (not too expensive, but not cheap) and with C19 not going away anytime soon, I wonder what your thoughts are on salary based on location. Specifically, I have 2 employees who want to move away to where their cost of living is MUCH less expensive, one being overseas. They are good employees - but Ii’m torn on the salary issue. I’ve read that even the big companies (sales force, facebook, etc) are adjusting salaires if/when employees move. Looking for options. Thx -Anonymous
Question 2:
I am a UX/UI designer and my boss wants me to track my time …for each project down as to see what projects are taking up resources. As a “creative” this feels weird to me. What are my options? -Sarah H

Question 1: Hey guys —
So .. turns out that 1/2 of the team I work with lied to get their jobs. Some are “Developers” others are in “Marketing”. I’d say that both are a problem as the devs keep taking forever to “learn” (i.e. Google) the answer/fix and the Marketing team is just copying other websites for ideas and strategy. Upper management has no idea. Options? -Colby R.
Question 2:
Any ideas or options on how to get other developers to collaborate in a productive manner? What I mean by this is that many of the other developers I work with are very non social/socially awkward. Additionally some of them don’t like each other very much. It’s tense to say the least. Or lead developer isn’t aware of this as she isn’t a part of the daily operations. -Brian

Question 1: A coworker reached out to me in confidence to say that another coworker, is leaving in a few months,. That second co-worker then told me that the first one is also looking to leave and has been interviewing. A funny as this may seem, what do I do in regards to telling HR and or management as I’m afraid that their workloads may be dumped on me.
Question 2: I work at a non profit as a developer and really like my job. I also like a bunch of my co-workers. That being said,.. there is too much drama (IMO) in our company and it drives me bonkers. I even created a non-company slack workspace so that I can communicate with some other co-workers that are on the same page with me. What are some options to squash the rumor/drama mongers at a company?

It’s Joey from Singapore. Glad to hear that the show is coming back (and Kyle is, too)! My question is this. Have you thought about leaving WordPress? Or, in what kind of situations do you see yourself leaving WordPress? When WordPress is no longer the top choice CMS? When WordPress foundation makes a bad call? Question 1: Hi Adam and Kyle, it’s been a while. My first question here! How do you see website design trends evolving in the next 5 to 10 years? Nowadays, we see a lot of websites using a full-page/full-screen (like Adam’s ConciergeWP website), compared to those fixed-width websites (e.g. 800 pixels) often seen in the past. Personally, I like the look of a simple two-column design (sidebar on the left), but I’m not sure if such design is seen as old-school or timeless. I would love to hear your thoughts! —Joey J

Question 1 -- Does anyone have a good analogy to explain to non-techy people the difference between hosting and domain registration?
I have a long-time client (non-profit run by a committee agghh) whose domain registration just expired and they’re flabbergasted because “We paid your last bill on time.”
We don’t handle their domain registration because I think that should always be in the client’s name. I still don’t have a good way to explain how that’s different from the hosting/maintenance they pay us for.- Sara Dunn in Slack

Question 1 -- Hi Adam and Kyle, this is Joey from Singapore. Today, let me ask your honest opinions about the Gutenberg block editor. Do you really like it? Among you two, Kyle always sounds more positive towards Gutenberg, but I don't like it at all. When I write posts, I always use Classic Editor by even disabling visual editor, as I hand-code everything using paragraph tags, image tags and fancybox tags and et cetera, which leads to a concern that all these hand-written tags might be stripped out when old posts are converted to Gutenberg, and fancybox might become non-functional.
As of writing, Gutenberg plugin gets only 2 out of 5 stars with nearly 3000 reviews while Classic Editor gets 5 out of 5 stars with 700 reviews. I understand that WordPress plans to support Classic Editor for the next few years, but after that, do you think we’ll all be forced to use Gutenberg? Or, it simply means WordPress stops updating Classic Editor plugin but were still free to use it at our own risk? I’d like to hear your honest opinions, thanks!

Question 2 -- Hi Adam and Kyle, this is Joey J from Singapore! I’d like your advice on caching plugins. Firstly, a caching plugin is an absolute must to use? Currently, I use W3 Total Cache (I know Kyle doesn’t like it!), but thinking about removing it to reduce the number of plugins (I don’t use any SEO plugin, either). Do you think it’s a good idea? Or, if you were to choose one caching plugin, which one would you recommend (preferably free, as my website is for a hobby and makes no money)?
By the way, I recently attended my first-ever WordCamp in Singapore and enjoyed very much! I’ll try meetups next time. I remember you encouraging me to attend a WordCamp in the previous episode. Thank you for that. :)

Question 1: Hi Adam and Kyle! It’s Joey from Singapore back again. I’m thinking about creating my first-ever free WordPress theme and have questions on coding ethics. For example, snippets of code to create a responsive mobile menu are freely available on places like tutorial blogs, Stack Overflow and within free themes, but am I allowed to use those codes as long as I credit the source and make them open-source on a platform like GitHub? Or, should I ask for an explicit permission from authors? If licensing terms are mentioned, of course I’ll follow, but if not mentioned, what’s the best way? Thank you in advance for your advice. -Joey Q

Lyrics to Kyle’s Song
I’m the biggest WordPress fan boy that you’ve ever seen
making websites every day now
Every single one is optimized and feature rich and so incredible
everyone is asking me how
Well sit down and let me show you how to develop a website
install WordPress everything is just right
A couple points a couple clicks now we’re almost there
load it up in the browser and prepare to stare
Oh no! Too slow!
I guess I’ll go to Magento
Goodbye WordPress
You couldn’t pass this test
It’s you, not me
You lack this one thing that I need
WordPress, no contest
Is the world’s OKest CMS
Ecommerce is my specialty I employ WooCommerce, Ninja Shop
and EDD especially
Every site that I deploy brings joy but more importantly
makes big money
I’m a master, earning profits much faster, every alternative
would be a total disaster
Get rich I shall
but what’s this I’ve gotta ticket ‘bout a problem with PayPal…
Oh my! Can’t buy!
I guess I’ll move to Shopify
…
The WordPress admin is so easy to use
I point and click and publish, round the interface I cruise
When I release new posts I watch my traffic soar
all my followers are begging me for more
I live by the rule that content is king
and benefit from open source publishing
I’m a gifted writer all my fans say I am
I’m moderating comments which…are mostly spam?
I shoot, I’m toast
I guess it’s time to switch to Ghost
…
I got all the themes and plugins that I’ll ever need
giving me the design and features to succeed
These tools are so powerful with prices so low
But one of them is asking me to upgrade to pro?
What a disgrace
I’m now migrating to Squarespace
…
I’ve got menus and custom post types
and these new block things that seem alright
There’s nothing more stable you will find that’s a fact
oh shoot did my site really just get hacked?
I’m filled with rage
and sticking to a Facebook page

Question 1:
Apparently its common practice these days within the WP job market to have multiple steps in the hiring process. that part is fine, but why do companies always want something for free.. i.e. "the project" dev's do a dev task, designers do a design task, PM's reply to scenarios, etc. What should i do when asked to do a "project" for a company i am interviewing with. My main issue is spending time "on spec". -Thomas Saltzman
Question 2:
Hi all, I have a question - do you charge your clients for the time spent familiarising yourself with a new plugin or functionality they requested, like a particular front-end builder? The way I usually approach it is, if it's something I'm likely to use again on another client's site, I won't charge for the time it takes me to learn the basics. But if it's something really obscure that I probably won't use again, I will charge both for the time I spend reading the docs and actually implementing the feature on the site fI was just wondering how everyone else deals with it?
