Opening up to a therapist might sound tricky for some, but if you want to be a guest on Rebel Therapist, a podcast for therapists who want to create a phenomenal signature program, you better be prepared to spill the beans.

In this episode of our How to Pitch series, Annie tells us what she’s looking for in a guest and how you can best increase your chances of being accepted to her show.

Find out all the dos and don’ts of successfully pitching Annie as she joins Podcast Ally Account Lead Nynke Humalda to discuss what she’s looking for in a guest.

As the popular saying goes “Expectation is the root of all heartache.”

Well, if you plan on securing podcast interviews with the expectation that they will be published immediately, you can expect some heartache.

That’s not to say that podcast episodes never go live swiftly after the interview takes place. There are exceptions, of course.

But when you begin your podcast interview journey, it is important to understand what the process actually looks like and set realistic expectations, especially if you have a launch or release planned.

In this episode of Podcast Ally, Account Lead Sam Brake Guia joins me to crunch the data we’ve collected during our 7 years of booking podcast guest appearances.

When you’re pitching yourself as a podcast guest, it’s not a question of whether you’ll be rejected but when.

While it’s no fun to be turned down, it’s even worse if you let a, “No, thanks,” from a podcast host or producer keep you from pursuing more opportunities.

When you sign up for a podcast interview, there is a lot sitting with you in the recording booth – even when that “booth” is your kitchen table.

On top of being excited and nervous all at once, there might also be a little voice warning you not to get too carried away.

That voice may be reminding you of how embarrassed you were at 7, when you got teased for being too loud. You want to avoid feeling that again, don’t you?

As Nicole Lewis-Keeber puts it, that’s the voice of your inner kiddo – a part of you that was formed through an adverse childhood experience.

As an adult, these kiddos can hijack you in the moments when you are looking to share your work in a bigger way.

This episode is all about exploring and understanding how childhood experiences create safety mechanisms that show up when you’re feeling most vulnerable. By understanding Nicole’s work, you can start to recognize your triggers, create a plan for navigating them in the moment, and have more comfortable and successful interviews as a result.

Nicole is a business therapist, who combines therapeutic processes with business coaching to help entrepreneurs build emotionally sustainable, financially stable businesses.

She’s the author of How to Love Your Business, the creator of the Do No Harm Program for Trauma Conscious Entrepreneurs, and is trained and certified with Brené Brown’s Dare To Lead™ methodology.

Tune in for:

  • [02:06] What are your “inner kiddos”
  • [10:23] What to do when you feel anxious or nervous during a podcast interview
  • [17:25] What small “t” trauma is and how it shows up in moments of vulnerability

When you’re pitching yourself to a podcast host, there’s often an instinct to frame yourself in the best possible light, putting your accomplishments and impressive numbers like your revenue, social media following and launch numbers first.

None of that interests this week’s guest, Laura Wallace (aka LauraAura), host of The Gutsty Podcast.

The Gutsy Podcast is a space for real, human conversations. While she doesn’t deny guests the space to talk about their credentials, there’s more to a person than their credentials or social media following.

You might believe that you have to be “connected” or have the right relationships to start booking podcast interviews for yourself.

Nor is being a complete stranger to the host and their team a deal-breaker!

Relationships do matter, but not in the way you think.

In this episode of Podcast Ally, our founder Brigitte Lyons and account lead Sam Brake Guia share how we think of relationships in the podcast space, and share the concrete steps you can take to build your own without DMing hosts on social media or following them around Facebook.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it's that we can't predict the future — not even the future of podcasting.

But today’s guest believes that podcasting is more vital than ever as we think about how we can connect in the era of covid-19, and beyond.

Rob Greenlee is a pioneer of the podcast space.

He got his start in podcasting in 2004 with the first nationally syndicated radio show "WebTalk World Radio Show and was inducted into the the Podcasters Hall of Fame in 2017.

Rob’s been podcasting for over 15 years and today he serves as the vice president of Content and Partnerships at LIBSYN. He currently co-hosts the "New Media Show", a weekly audio and video podcast that streams LIVE on NewMediaShow.com/live.

I brought Rob onto Podcast Ally to speak to the trends to be aware of as we look to the future of podcasting. He chats about:

  • What it was like being a pioneer in the podcast space
  • The key differences between podcasts and radio
  • The benefits -- and the risks -- of the influx of advertising into the podcast space
  • Why he believes comedians completely changed the trajectory of podcasts
  • Why podcasters should create content that they're passionate about rather than focusing so heavily on what they think their audience wants
  • How podcasts are an important medium for connection, especially during the pandemic

What do you do when the podcast you built doesn't excite you anymore?

When you haven't resonated with your own content in a while, and you just can't muster up the energy to push through the disconnect anymore?

You could always rebrand your podcast and pivot to a topic that's more aligned with who you are now, but that would mean losing the audience you worked so hard to grow!

.... Or does it?

Dr. Michelle Mazur has proven that rebranding isn't the kiss of death for your podcast and can reignite your passion for podcasting.

As a brand messaging coach, Michelle teaches that having a clear and captivating message is the key to reaching the people you could help the most, in a way that is powerful and feels effortless.

And yet, she reached a crossroads with her podcast, where she knew that she had to rename and rebrand her show.

In today's conversation, Michelle walks us through her decision to make the change — as well as the response she got from her audience.

I also got her to share her tips with dealing with the pressure of feeling like your podcast has to be perfectly scripted in order to be successful.

As a certified Leadership Coach, TEDxWomen speaker and writer, Tanya is the pre-eminent authority on the Imposter Complex. Her clients include best-selling authors, public speakers, and rockstar motivators.

Instead of shying away from those questions, Tanya turned them into a learning opportunity for herself and her audience.

In this episode of Podcast Ally, I talked to her to find out what it was like hosting a podcast, when you know going into each conversation that you were going to be learning from your guests -- and possibly getting things wrong.

In our conversation, Tanya shares:

When podcasters decide to monetize their shows, usually they opt between advertising or community support models.

Brand partnership is the road less traveled, but working with an established company who can support the podcast financially, provide production assistance and promote your content could be a dream-come-true for a podcaster looking for more stability and to grow their own platform.

Today, on Podcast Ally, we’re exploring the question of what it’s like to partner up with an established company to produce your podcast with the help of Tara McMullin.

Tara originally launched the What Works podcast under the name Profit.Power.Pursuit in partnership with CreativeLive. She joined me to talk about how she pitched the idea of a podcast to CreativeLive, her experiences working with them, and why she ultimately decided to become an independent podcaster.

Tara shares the nuts-and-bolts on:

  • How she approached CreativeLive with the idea of starting a podcast together
  • Her advice for finding a brand to partner with
  • The major benefits of co-producing a podcast with the help of an established company
  • Why Tara decided to end the partnership with CreativeLive, and how she approached them to ask for full control of the podcast
  • How she managed the transition to indie podcaster
  • The way she plans content themes for What Works
  • Why Tara believes you should consider your podcast a product you’re providing to customers
  • How she developed her own skills as a podcast host and producer

Looking at the influence of Courtland Allen's thriving 18,000 member Indie Hackers community and wildly popular podcast, you might think success was inevitable.

However, back when Courtland founded Indie Hackers, the concept of building a "lifestyle" business in tech carried a stigma.

As a graduate of MIT and Y Combinator, Courtland spent 6 years trying to build the stereotypical high growth Silicon Valley startup before he realized something...

He just wanted to build something that he could put online, charge money for, and make enough money to pay his bills.

Courtland had a hunch that there were other tech misfits like himself, who could use a space to share their stories and learn from one another.

It was out of that shift in perspective that Indie Hackers was born.

Today, the podcast he started for other Silicon Valley outcasts has reached 6 million downloads, proving that Courtland wasn't the only one opting out of the startup grind.

Courtland joined Podcast Ally to talk about The Indie Hackers Podcast, which grew out the written interviews he was already creating for IndieHackers.com.

In this podcast episode, Courtland shares:

  • Why he initially resisted starting a podcast and how he feels about it now
  • What it’s like to reach out to successful founders and famous guests
  • The evolution of Courtland’s research and pre-interview process
  • The Indie Hackers Podcast’s current stats and big moments of growth
  • Courtland’s approach for deciding show content, guests, and growing the podcast
  • Why acquisition and retention are important parts of your growth strategy

Explore Your Enthusiasm recently celebrated its 300th episode, and I couldn’t think of a better candidate for our first guest than someone who not only has put out so much content — but the majority of those episodes have also been solo!

I brought Tara onto Podcast Ally to pick her brain about how she keeps the show going.

In addition to the podcast, Tara is an author, a foster mom, and the founder of a program of business basics for nerdy makers called The Starship, so you know that making it easy was one of her priorities in producing her own show.

In her interview, Tara shares:

  • Why Tara became interested in the podcast platform
  • Which is easier to produce — solo or interview episodes
  • How she comes up with content ideas
  • Exactly how she puts her episodes together
  • How she keeps going even when it feels really hard
  • Tara’s tips for podcasters who are new to creating content or figuring out their audience

Please check out the Explore Your Enthusiasm podcast!

If you’re a creative or maker, I also recommend you join her Free Facebook group called Confident and Profitable Handmade Biz. You can find that at facebook.com/groups/taraswiger.
