Bee Adamic is the founder and CEO of Liberty Music PR. In the early stages of her career Bee realized that even though she didn’t want to be a music artist, she could navigate pretty well in this industry. She was able to do that by taking all kinds of opportunities and trying a little bit of everything. According to Bee, that’s the secret for combining purpose and work: to have different experiences and see what resonates with you the most. Later in her journey, Bee tells us that she suddenly had to manage motherhood and a corporate job which, at the time, was the cause of a lot of fear, but also excitement. Bee also shares in which way a new baby affects the productivity of the parents, especially if they work in the music industry. Tune in!

Artists are the superheroes of the modern world, yet they are entirely lacking proper mental and emotional support to thrive on the job. The artist job description has changed dramatically in the past 10 years, from the traditional cycles of studio-promotions-tour, to more short-lived campaigns combined with never-ending social media presence. To the artist, this means having to do more work than ever before in history.

Find out what led Anna to start Break The Record Coaching, who it’s for, what coaching can do to help and support artists, and other details!

In this episode of Break the Record podcast, Anna sits down with the founder and CEO of The Familie and Unlisted/Brand Lab Steve Astephen. Steve is an experienced sports and entertainment entrepreneur who has worked with top talent from the NFL, NBA, golf and, in music, Machine Gun Kelly.

Anna and Steve discuss his experience with Ayahuasca and how it helped him to heal old wounds and to see everything else in his life more clearly afterwards. Steve also shares a really powerful story where, after trying out Ayahuasca, he finally had the chance to connect with a friend to have some closure from their relationship.

It’s really interesting that a few situations in life allow you to heal everything in your past and present that needs to be healed. But in order to do that, it’s easier if you first let go of yourself. That is the exact reason why Ayahuasca and psychedelics in general are becoming popular over the last few years. Besides supporting others with anxiety and mental health related symptoms, this kind of substance helps with mental clarity and Steve describes how this experience happened for him. Tune in!

Key Highlights

  • Steve explains the reasons why he considers Ayahuasca a medicine instead of a recreational drug;
  • How Ayahuasca helped Steve to see his whole life in chapters and heal what needed to be healed from his past;
  • Steve shares a particular moment when trying out Ayahuasca where he could connect with a past friend and finally have some closure on their relationship.

Powerful Quotes by Steve about Ayahuasca

  • “I've really changed. There’s no doubt that medicine changed me for the better in so many ways. But, I still have work to do.” – Steve Astephen

  • “In general it is for everyone, as long as you realize what you could potentially see or learn about yourself.” – Steve Astephen

  • How new artists are going from one movement to another without getting deep into any of them (not leaving a blueprint);
  • Riku explains that young artists need one great track and then go from there;
  • More artists should be thinking about keeping integrity and leaving a legacy;

Powerful Quotes by Riku and Anna

  • “I hate being fake and this is something that there is too much in the business. By being honest, you save a lot of time.” – Riku Pääkkönen

Each artist and creator has a unique relationship with money. Money is what gives us the safety to keep moving forward, but can also be the one thing holding us back. Either way, one thing is crucial to know: your success, your talent, and your creativity are not measured with money; they are measured with different types of outcomes.

Lauren Rozwadowski is a mindset and success coach working with music industry professionals, creatives and new business owners. She founded her business Courage Core with a mission to help people live more consciously and courageously and "get out of their own way" to truly thrive. Lauren has worked in the music industry for 10+ years at PPL, Warner Music UK and as an accomplished singer and songwriter. As an independent artist she has performed in some of the best venues in the UK and across Europe performing her self penned and self released albums ‘We Will Need Courage’ and ‘Woman In The Arena’, both of which received Radio, Press support and TV Syncs. Lauren is also on the Beat Board of the Featured Artist Coalition which represents the rights of featured artists in the music industry.

In this episode of Break the Record Podcast, Anna and Lauren talk about limiting beliefs and scarcity mindset when it comes to money. They highlight how important it is to develop a better connection with money using simple actions, like switching the language we use when talking and thinking about it. You will learn that the value of money is subjective and, in fact, goes beyond the value of our work.

Key Highlights

  • Lauren shares her background when she had a lot of limiting beliefs and self doubt before working with music;
  • Lauren talks about how she was able to improve her confidence by putting herself out there;
  • Her career working as a coach and a mentor, helping other artists to find their confidence and to be more self-reliant;
  • They talk about the value of money and how it is very subjective from person to person;
  • It’s important to have a positive thinking around money and to improve the language you use with it;
  • Other people’s success and your success can coexist;
  • Your success (and your creative work) is not measured with money;

Powerful Quotes by Lauren and Anna

  • “Before money can even come into your life you need to do the work internally and simultaneously have a better experience externally.” – Anna Turunen

  • “It’s about not convincing yourself consistently and telling yourself consistently that you’re broke, that you’re poor, that you’re not good with money.” – Lauren Rozwadowski

In this week’s episode of Break the Record Podcast, Anna welcomes Joanne Croxford for a discussion about mental health awareness, diversity in today’s society, and how we can make change doing our part. Joanne talks about her background in the music industry and how the topic called mental health was a common theme among her team at the time.

Sometimes people who suffer from mental health issues cannot see through the problem, but, if you’re trying to help, it’s important not to tell them how they are feeling. Oftentimes, the origin of the problem is some sort of response to trauma so engaging with the person is the best way to deal with it. A lot can happen when we listen without judgment and not to judge is the first step to actually help.

Key Highlights

  • Joanne talks about her background working 17 years in the music industry;
  • Joanne explains that mental health in the music industry was a common thing to discuss back in the early years of her career;
  • Sometimes people who suffer from mental health issues cannot see through the problem and reality seems a lot different than it actually is;
  • Oftentimes the origins of some addictions are responses to old traumas;
  • It’s important not to tell how a person dealing with mental health issues/addictions is feeling, engage with them instead;
  • Anna and Joanne discuss tokenism and inclusion nowadays;
  • How early education is fundamental to change people’s perceptions about acceptance and diversity.

Powerful Quotes by Joanne

  • “The mental health conversation was always happening in my workplace, and I didn’t realize how much of an anomaly that was until I started talking to my other friends.” – Joanne Croxford

  • “Addiction is the most conning enemy of life.” – Joanne Croxford

  • “It’s really important that we don’t assume people’s pronouns based on how they present, because it’s about how the person feels.” – Joanne Croxford
  • “Diversity is how things look on the outside, inclusion is how people feel when they’re inside.” – Joanne Croxford

We tend to be skeptical about certain experiences, but as soon as we start noticing differences and actually begin quieting our minds…these experiences can change our lives.

Among many benefits of practicing breathwork, healing old emotions is one of the most important. Through breathing cohesively we are able to restore energy and clear our brain, bringing unhealed feelings to the surface and, with time, we can even reach a point of surrender and complete calmness. Hellè explains that breathwork also puts you in control and in the driver seat of your life.

Key Highlights

  • Hellè talks about her history with hypnotherapy and breathwork;
  • Breathwork is excellent for restoring energy, feeling clear, and improving memory & brain function;
  • Different people need different approaches (hearing, seeing, sensing) when practicing breathwork;
  • Why moments of breathwork are like ceremonies/special occasions;
  • Hellè explains that breathwork puts you in control;
  • What is intuition vs. what is not intuition (intuition goes beyond our knowledge);
  • The importance of trying new things even if you feel fear of doing it;

Powerful Quotes by Hellè

  • “For me breathwork is the most powerful way to get into connection with your true WHY.” – Hellè Weston

  • “The many different styles of breathwork will lead to a different experience and a different result.” – Hellè Weston

Dan is the CEO of Unapologetic Group, an artist management, marketing, and digital services agency. He shares his varied background working in electronic music, including artists like Avicii, Axwell & Ingrosso, Zara Larsson, Mark Knight & more!

Dan began his journey in the music world at the ripe young age of 13 writing for magazines such as Kerrang!. From doing CD reviews to conducting interviews with various industry figures, Dan says of his early days that he “just got a real taste for the industry and what happens behind the scenes.” It was a rollercoaster period in his life that saw him going from journalist to blogger to publicist to freelancer doing gigs for different studios, publications, and DJs.

In 2014, Dan decided to work in music full-time, and in 2016 started his own company, Unapologetic Group. He moved to Stockholm, Sweden where he worked for five years before returning to the U.K. in 2020.

Dan also shares that, when looking to turn your passion into a career, never focus on earning money from the get-go. He admits that he was living a miserable life even after receiving his first big paycheck early in his career. Today, Dan prioritizes health, happiness, and growth in everything that he pursues.

In 2017, Dan found himself hospitalized for what turned out to be a panic attack—something that had never happened to him before. In 2018, he collapsed in his bathroom for no apparent reason and once again ended up in the hospital, this time covered in stitches. After a long, hard review of the past two years, Dan realized that his declining mental health had to do with a lack of discipline, destructive habits, and unresolved traumas. “If I don’t sort this out,” he says, “I don’t think I’m going to have a career for much longer.”

Today, Dan does what he can to stay active and disciplined in his personal life, which includes taking up boxing in his spare time. At the same time, he strives to stay true to his values and unique creative persona as both an artist and business owner.

Anna and Dan go on to discuss how to navigate a career in the music industry, what it takes to succeed as an independent artist, and what it really means to live authentically as a creative professional.

Key Highlights

  • Dan shares how he developed a taste for house and dance music in recent years after being a hardcore fan of punk and heavy metal growing up.
  • Advice for those looking to make a pivot in their career or dive into a field where a stable income is hard to come by
  • The importance of setting healthy boundaries to be able to direct energy toward the things that matter most
  • What a face-to-face experience with Gordon Ramsay taught Dan about living your authentic self in the entertainment industry
  • Why Dan believes that hustle culture is doing more harm than good

Powerful Quotes by Dan

  • [When you’re looking to pursue your passion as a career,] don’t think about the money in the first instance. The biggest letdown for me as a young adult was when I finally started making really good money and I looked at my situation and thought, “Ah, I’m fucking miserable!” I realized, “Oh my God. I have based my entire early 20s thinking that this is what I needed to be happy and it couldn’t be further from it.”
  • You don’t owe this industry your health and your well-being and, sure, we’re privileged to do something we love, but that doesn’t mean we should sacrifice ourselves for it.
  • You shouldn’t be chasing acceptance. You should be chasing the path that allows you to be real to yourself. It’s a very cliché thing to say, but other people’s opinions are none of your fucking business.

Former Miss United States and sports anchor, current relationship coach and co-host of True Sex & Wild Love podcast as well as a budding singer/songwriter —these are among the many, diverse roles that the wildly ambitious 31-year-old Whitney Miller has claimed for herself.

The Texas native had always felt herself to be an odd duck. A tomboy growing up, joining a beauty pageant was the last thing Whitney could ever imagine herself doing. After a lot of encouragement to go for Miss Texas, however, she took the plunge—and won. Then she won Miss United States after that. Beyond trying something new, Whitney decided that pageantry could be her gateway to other opportunities, all while inspiring little girls to think outside societal norms.

From pageantry, she made the surprising leap into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing. Along the way, her well publicized open relationship with her fiance at the time Aubrey Marcus poised her to become an online relationship coach and co-host of wildly successful sex & relationship podcast True Sex & Wild Love. Most recently, she has embarked on a longtime passion that she never had the courage to tackle till now: singing and songwriting.

Listen in as Anna and Whitney reflect on the whirlwind that was (and still is) Whitney’s action-packed journey and the lingering dreams she hopes to achieve in the near future.

Key Highlights

  • Cliff Notes of Whitney Miller’s life: winning Miss Texas and Miss United States in 2012, going into MMA, becoming a relationship coach, and overcoming her fear of singing in public
  • The importance of safety and stability within a relationship while keeping it “fluid, flexible, and malleable”
  • Growing as a person by planting your “fear pot”
  • Why are there so many emotions attached to singing and what makes it such a personal thing to do?
  • How songwriting helps Whitney deepen her connection with her Divine Feminine
  • Anna’s amazing hypnosis story

Three Powerful Quotes by Whitney

  • To me, music is the self-mastery, personal development world. They’re so combined.
  • I don’t want to be Pageant Patty. If I were to win this, I would want to inspire little girls and say, “You can do anything you want to do. You don’t have to fit into this perfect box that society says you have to be in.”
  • Relationships should be, or can be, more fluid and flexible and malleable than what we are taught in society.

Welcome to the very first episode of the Break the Record podcast, hosted by Anna Turunen!

Anna is a Finnish-born music marketing professional with five years of experience working at major record labels in Finland and London, U.K.

In this introductory episode, Anna reflects on her multifaceted background, what inspired her to launch the podcast, and what to expect in future episodes.

Anna’s parents are mental health specialists: Her mother is one of the leading psychotherapists in Finland and her father was a psychiatrist. This led to an upbringing where Anna was always compelled to “over explain” her feelings and how she dealt with mental and emotional issues of any sort. At the same time, she had a deep curiosity to learn what makes people tick and learned how to peel down to the core of who they really are.

She struggled with insecurity as a child and never felt like she belonged until the age of 12, when she discovered the cathartic power of heavy metal. That was the moment that caused her to fall in love with music, and from then on, music became her North Star in life and career.

Anna goes on to share how her innate curiosity and love of music opened her eyes to a world outside the one she grew up with—and never felt a part of. It led to her motivation to see the world beyond Finland and pursue a career in the music industry and, eventually, becoming a certified hypnotherapist.

Key Highlights

  • An upbringing defined by heavy metal, a love of travel, and a profound interest in human psychology
  • Overcoming suicidal tendencies by deciding to fall in love with life
  • The elements of holistic health: body, mind, and spirit
  • Why fitness does not equal health

Three Powerful Quotes by Anna

  • Most people’s personalities are based on defense mechanisms.
  • There is just not enough content out there of people who have gone through shit, are openly talking about it, and are actually talking about how they got to the positive place where they are now.
  • I am a facilitator of positive change and transformation because I eventually transformed my own life through a lot of work. I want to share that with you guys.
