In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Olajide Williams to explore how stroke awareness, prevention, and treatment intersect with culture, equity, and the arts. He shares both personal insights and groundbreaking research that has saved lives in Harlem and beyond.
Together, we discuss:
The urgent reality of stroke – why every minute counts (“time is brain”).
Why stroke disproportionately affects Black and Brown communities—and tragically, at younger ages.
The treatment window: from clot-dissolving medications like tenecteplase to advanced clot-removal procedures.
The hidden barriers to timely stroke care—knowledge gaps, delayed responses, and reliance on cabs or waiting rooms instead of calling 911.
The power of health literacy as the first pit stop on the road to health equity.
How the Hip Hop Stroke Program quadrupled treatment rates in Harlem by engaging children, who then educated their parents and grandparents.
* Why music, art, and emotional connection are indispensable for learning and transforming community health.
Key Insights & Gems 💡
“Time is brain.” Every minute of untreated stroke equals 1.9 million neurons lost.
Community-driven solutions work. By equipping children with stroke knowledge, entire families became more prepared—and lives were saved.
Stress and emotions are critical. Eight minutes of anger can reduce blood vessel relaxation by 50%, showing how closely our emotional health is tied to physical outcomes.
Health literacy = health equity. Seeing yourself represented in health campaigns creates stronger connections and better outcomes.
* The arts as medicine. When logic, credibility, and emotion (logos, ethos, pathos) come together, change becomes possible.
Dr. Olajide Williams, MD, MS is the Vice Dean of Community Health at Columbia University and a world-renowned neurologist specializing in stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Known as the “Hip Hop Doc”, he has pioneered the use of music, storytelling, and culture to reduce healthcare disparities and improve health literacy.
He is the co-founder of Hip Hop Public Health with legendary artist Doug E. Fresh and has partnered with icons such as Chuck D, DMC, Salt-N-Pepa, and Ashanti to translate lifesaving medical knowledge into accessible, culturally relevant education. With multiple NIH-funded initiatives, Dr. Williams continues to transform how we understand, prevent, and respond to stroke while advancing equity in medicine and inspiring global movements in public health.
Memorable Quote from Dr. Williams
“Those who are closest to the problem are often closest to the solution.”

In this compelling episode, Dr. Wuori joins us to discuss his groundbreaking book, The Daycare Myth, highlighting the significant disconnect between the science of early childhood development and its reflection—or lack thereof—in public policy. Dr. Wuori shares powerful insights and forward-thinking reasons for prioritizing early childhood development. It builds brain capital and cognitive reserve, which is the brains ability to withstand stress and combat cognitive decline in the face of disease.
He emphasizes that early experiences profoundly shape cognitive abilities, emotional wellness, and social behaviors, setting the stage for lifelong adaptability and achievement. Additionally, early investment significantly reduces future healthcare, educational, and welfare expenditures, strengthening communities both economically and socially.
Early childhood nurturing also fosters critical emotional skills such as empathy, emotional regulation, and collaboration, which are essential for leadership and relationship-building. By prioritizing early childhood development, society can ensure the growth of innovative, emotionally intelligent individuals capable of thriving in a rapidly evolving, complex world.
Join us to explore these transformative ideas and understand why early childhood development is essential to building resilient, prosperous societies.
Dr. Dan Wuori is the Founder and President of Early Childhood Policy Solutions, a public policy focused on the needs of America’s young children and families. His new book, The Daycare Myth: What We Get Wrong About Early Care and Education (and What We Should Do About It) shot immediately to #1 on Amazon’s education charts in February, some seven months before its release. But to thousands of parents the world over, Dr. Wuori is known not for his work in the policy space, but for his innovative social media presence - which offers daily video child development lessons. In a recent profile, The New York Times called Dr. Wuori’s X/Twitter account “a font of delight and edification… educational, but also simply put “awwww.”

A Creative Tribute to a Teacher: Mr. Miller
For this Diamond Mentor moment, I will be sharing my recent experience speaking at my 6th grade teacher's memorial service and how his guidance and empathy structured my current mindset and creativity. I nominated him for the 2011 Sondheim Award which he won $10,000. I’ll share how that award affected his reflection on his whole teaching career.
We will also discuss how empathy and engagement is critical for building strong brains and how the brain produces acetylcholine, which is needed for plasticity (brain growth).
Great leadership is great ‘teacher’ ship.
Those who can do and those who love, teach.
Thank you Mr. Miller for your uniqueness and creativity. You are greatly appreciated and I will miss you.

How do you create a life that combines neuroscience with social activism?
Well, our next guest Dr. Peter Sterling has written the playbook on it. From being a Freedom Rider and getting arrested for social justice to seeing the connection between discrimination and brain stress, Dr. Sterling started to see a connection between wellbeing, brain science and overall health in marginalized communities.
He also shows how this affects our Intercultural Creativity®.
Working in communities of color, Dr. Sterling observed high rates of strokes from hypertension and began to explore its neural basis. He soon realized that it was not primarily a problem of the body or genes (as the medical textbooks still claim) but rather chronic stress mediated by the brain to the body (blood vessels, heart, and kidney). What caused this effect?
Discrimination and lack of belonging.
He began to publish articles on this topic, beginning in 1977, and what he learned about the brain-body connection ultimately developed into two books, 'Principles of Neural Design' and 'What is Health? Allostasis and the Evolution of Human Design' (2020).
Join us as we jump into the intersection of well-being, the mental and creative effects of being excluded and how art is an important component for our mental health.

‘Genein, I can’t take any more voice over powerpoints! This is having no long term effect on people’s behavior around these DEI topics!”
I heard this and I knew one reason why.
If facilitators aren’t tapping into people’s emotional brain, there is no strong connection to the topic. Sitting in a 60 minute lecture you are not emotionally committed to means it goes in one ear and out the other. Especially if it is a topic that can put people in a defensive mode or a ‘I’m not engaged’ mode.
The neuroscience is clear. The hippocampus’s decision to store memories hinges on two factors: emotional significance and previous knowledge for association.
Emotion leads. Content follows.
Connection leads. Learning (and then hopefully behavior change) follows.
In this Diamond Mentor Moment, I’ll discuss the importance of training, professional development and classroom learning that utilizes emotional imaginative strategies to teach difficult topics that bring about change.
This new era of thinking needs new strategies of online and in person teaching.
This new era needs Intercultural Creativity®.

To know your brain is to know your mind is to know your LIFE. One thing that happens in your brain during learning is myelination.
This is when the axons of the neurons become fixated together, with myelin (a fatty substance), to help the electrical impulses travel faster throughout your body.
What does this mean for your Intercultural Creativity®?
Since creative thinking is a skill, anything you do with repetition gets stronger. Same with cultural competence. In this Diamond Mentor Moment, I share how to incorporate this concept of myelination into your life and I share an example from my life of how this played out with my public speaking.

This will be the new skill organizations will be looking for in their new candidates.
Conceptual Combination - the ability to combine and recombine items to create new ideas. One way to practice this is to make connections between non-associated items.
Last week I posted
What is a connection between:
a) Abraham Lincoln
b) The Titanic
c) Jackie Robinson
I posted this on all my platforms and only two people responded. I even offered a free signed book! It’s funny because research shows that only about 2% of the population retains their genius thinking creative ability. I guess I found my two representatives.
Watch to learn their answers as well as my own associations.
I’ll be teaching on the concept of ‘Association Barriers’ and why you want people on your work team to be able to make un-obvious associations in this future of work.

If creativity is the driver of innovation, then it is curiosity that is the driver of creativity! Dr. Alison Horstmeyer has a doctorate in workplace curiosity and is a top thought leader on how the level of intellectual curiosity affects workplace performance.
She discusses what true workplace curiosity looks like, how psychologically safe cultures build curiosity and how the level of curiosity of the C-suite affects the entire organization's development and future growth.
Dr. Alison mentions why these hindrances inhibit intellectual curiosity:
-Top-down decision making
-Preference for the status quo
-Lack of creative exploration time
-Fear of being ostracized for non-conformist and unconventional thinking
Curiosity is the fourth gem of our 7 Gems of Intercultural Creativity and this conversation certainly explains why.

June is a month for many celebrations but it is also PTSD Awareness Month. I am connecting this awareness to the topic of 'Creative Abuse' that so many people are dealing with in their personal lives and in their workspace.
Many people hold onto an event that was so shaming in their childhood that it changed the way they thought of themselves. It changed their identity. A certain percentage of those people have those events around a creative act.
These 'creativity scars' affect the way we create and interact with others. Our creativity stems from our identity. So if our identity is abused, our creative production will be also. This diamond mentor moment discusses the effect of this and offers some strategies to start rebuilding your creative identity.

Just because you can see, hear, taste, and smell doesn’t mean you are observing to your fullest potential. The main way to create is to combine the data you are experiencing, or have experienced, in new ways. If your observational skills are below par, you are missing a great deal of opportunity for connecting the unconnected and producing innovative ideas.
Intercultural competence requires strong observational skills as well. Do you truly see your coworker or friend? Can you take in the data in order to have empathy? In order to lead well?
It starts with an open mind and the ability to observe. Check out this Diamond Mentor Moment about increasing your observational skills in the creative realm and the intercultural realm for this new era.

Are you living in the intersection of fields, disciplines and cultures?
If not, you should be - especially if you want to grow in creative thinking!
Today I’m sharing about the Medici Effect which explains that creativity lives at the intersection of fields, disciplines and cultures and is affect by your association barriers. This is aligned with our ‘Intercultural Creativity™’ framework which trains employees on developing their intercultural competency and creative thinking skills along side each other.
In order to strengthen your creative thinking (now the #1 skill needed) be aware of the level of your association barriers. Highly creative people have LOW association barriers and therefore can make more novel connections that those with HIGH association barriers just don’t see. In the world of intercultural creativity, it’s all connected!
At CAFFE ‘InterCreative’ Strategies, our framework and curriculum increases your ability to improve your associations and the usage of them personally and professionally.

It is a tough time right now and intercultural competency is a critical tool to understand people who are seeing the same event but having different experiences. Our creativity is affected by how we see the world and how we see each other.
Culture affects creative ability and dismantling biases is one step in the right direction to being unified and being able to connect, create and innovate together.

This will be the top training for 2021 as organizations realize that not only is creative thinking the #1 skill needed in the workforce but team members will have to create across cultural lines - virtually and in person.

Financial Illiteracy isn't a Black problem, it's an American problem; but the negative effects are compounded in Black and Brown communities. Political power is closely tied to financial empowerment. Many people in communities of color do not have adequate financial education. Wealth equals opportunity.
From his unique executive-level position at a Fortune 100 Company for almost two decades, Eugene Mitchell observed how other races, religions and ethnic groups use financial tools and strategies in ways that were vastly different to those being employed in African-American communities. Noticing a difference in implementation and access, Eugene created, and ultimately completed, the $50 Billion Community Empowerment Plan.
This nationally recognized Plan for creating Black wealth in America served as the pinnacle of Eugene's corporate career and helped to further the transformation of Black communities across the country. The initiative amassed $50 billion of income protection and future income for over 340,000 Black families, using life insurance as the foundational asset.
In this book, Eugene Mitchell shares his financial insights and "7 Untold Rules" that everyone can apply, to create financial prosperity and an intergenerational legacy. Join Eugene in this movement toward your own financial empowerment, and a collective community transformation.
