"As a mostly learn-by-doing career, the experience and training of the association CEO is routinely idiosyncratic—moving up through the ranks in associations of varying sizes, types and cultures. And for the mid-career executive, thrust fresh and new into the world of associations at the CEO level, a holistic look at the association CEO position can be even more crucial." Do boycotts work? Sometimes. But it's complicated.
Often, when it comes to hosting conferences, it turns out it's the workers at the destinations who get hurt the worst and the boycott doesn't always have the intended impact desired.
Could there be a middle ground for organizations hosting meetings in states that support legislature that doesn't align with an individual's – or an organization's – values?
SocialOffset is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation created to provide event organizers and their attendees with a tool to offset the economic impact of their event or stay in a city where local legislation and laws are not in alignment with their individual values. The “offset” is realized when an attendee elects to make a donation to a recommended list of local charities and/or organizations that support those impacted by particular laws that may be in conflict with the attendee’s personal values. (This is similar to a carbon offset.)
Additionally, partners with supporting destination marketing organizations to showcase options to event organizers whose attendees have expressed concern about meeting in a particular location. It is the founders’ belief that through this opportunity, event organizers, attendees, and destination marketing organizations can support those most impacted by these legislative activities rather than choosing to boycott locations.
Featuring guests Elena Gerstmann and Rhonda Payne!
Today’s Nonprofit Business Model often relies heavily on meetings and events. Whether it is for commitment to cause, content, or community; all we know is that the value proposition for an association often finds an important channel in its events.
But what happens when attendance begins to slide? What happens when the value of that value proposition doesn’t seem to be what it used to be? Can Event Design Save Your Conference?
Ruud Janssen is an events industry powerhouse. You may have already seen his work if you’ve looked through tools like Miro or Mural and discovered a design tool called the Event Model Canvas.
Ruud is an international speaker, facilitator, and designer of high-stakes conferences & events. He is the Author of the Event Design Handbook (2016) and Design to Change (2021) and he serves as co-founder of Event Design Collective (http://edco.global).

Data privacy rules continue to expand, and even if you are well informed on GDPR, you may not know why you need to know about the WISP.
A Written Information Security Program (WISP) is a set of documents that details an organization’s security controls, processes as well as policies. In many states in North America, a WISP is a legally required document, to show the organization’s IT security and data protection status.
It takes into account the policies and processes that should be in place to ensure that any organization, which processes, controls, manages, licenses and/or retain personal information about citizens, and has implemented the required level of data protection and cyber security. If these do not currently exist, a WISP can help identify the gaps in any security plan.
Join host KiKi L'Italien as she interviews David Clarke, Chief Technology Officer, The Trust Bridge, and Malcolm Dowden, Partner, Data Privacy, Cybersecurity and Digital Assets, Squire Patton Boggs, to discuss this important issue.
As data breaches and cyber security attacks increase, having the correct WISP documentation in place can demonstrate to clients and suppliers, customers and members, as well as the regulatory authorities and employees that your organization takes Data Protection and Cyber Security seriously, and has implemented the necessary safeguards.

The recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) laid out our current global situation in stark relief and as United Nations General-Secretary António Guterres declared it is "Code Red" for humanity. We are now past midnight and if the most recent Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow is any indicator, we are justified in saying our governments have failed us and we have to assume that we are now on our own. It is now too late for sustainability, and regeneration of our economic, social and environmental systems to attempt to preserve as much life as possible is our one and only priority. Join us for an update on the current state of the climate, and a deep exploration of the topic of Transformative Adaptation which is our last and best hope to cope with what is breaking upon our world. Associations are needed more than ever to use their capacity to step into the void of leadership and we will have practical suggestions on how you can motivate yourselves, your members and their workforces to push the needle on the adaptation we need now. Guests: Rupert Read is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, a campaigner for the Green Party of England and Wales, former spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion and co-founder of the Green Activists Network, GreensCAN. He is the author of various books, including Parents for a Future - How loving our children can prevent climate collapse. Shelly Alcorn is a Principal in Alcorn Associates Management Consulting and specializes in strategy and governance for the association community. She is a frequent keynote speaker focusing on critical issues faced by organizations and society at large. Her main interests have been how to be more human in an increasingly machine-driven world and what impacts the rise of artificial intelligence will have on the workplace of the future. She is now laser-focused on our global climate emergency and the role associations need to play in the face of the sixth mass extinction. Find her on Twitter @shellyalcorn.
The Impact of Tech M&A on Associations Why should people care when one tech company is acquired by another?
This interview features Kevin Bruffey, president of Protech and Pat McGlynn, general manager of Togetherwork’s associations business unit to talk about the recent acquisition of Protech by Togetherwork and what all of that means (and could mean) for the innovation of solutions, current customers and association professionals, and for the association industry as a whole.
We've got some big problems to solve and associations are in a position to help bring the right people together to solve them. What’s the first thing you typed into Google today? Was it a question? What kind of question was it?
Questions are a phenomenal place to start if you ever want to get closer to understanding something – whatever it is. And that’s what I’m thinking about today when it comes to business and how we can better show up for ourselves and the people we serve. So I invite you to come along and think about it with me on this week’s inaugural episode of Amplified Growth with me, KiKi L’Italien.

Join me for this talk with Tahira Endean, head of events for the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE), about what we've learned about virtual and hybrid events this past year.
This year, SITE just held their HYBRID meeting with around 1,200 signed up for the hybrid edition, and delegates joining from 53 global nations. There were smaller, in-person gatherings taking place simultaneously in Chicago and Dallas with public health protocols in place and I have just the person here to talk with us about how all of that went down...Tahira!
Tahira is a serial event producer, curious meeting planner, and designer of human experiences. Three continents (so far), hundreds of events, dozens of amazing teams and thousands of transformed guests later, Tahira remains passionate about creating and delivering human-centered events. What is the role storytelling plays in creating deeper relationships?
Dave Nadelberg is best known as the creator of Mortified and the cultural movement has now become a podcast, multiple books, a couple documentaries and the new Netflix series, The Mortified Guide. But it all started with a live show, which is still going strong across 20 cities around the world.
He and co-creator Neil Katcher recently created a card game called, "I Can't Believe I Did That..." which is both a party game and an exercise in empathy and hilarity. We'll talk about the power of storytelling and the ways we can use story to better connect with other people. "
Reminisce with your friends about intense pop star crushes, questionable fashion choices, and sobbing at the middle school dance with conversation prompts that spark memories of your most heartwarming, confusing, and totally OMG-worthy moments.
Celebrate all your weirdest and most wonderful childhood memories and get to know your friends like never before with this gloriously awkward and honest party game for adults 17 and up--perfect for any video chat or socially distant hangout."
In a year with fewer in-person meetings and face-to-face interactions, online communities have played an important role in helping people feel more connected.
In this episode of the Chat, we find out how the online community leaders for some of your favorite online communities in the association industry stepped up to the challenge in the year of COVID-19, BLM protests, and all the rest!
We talk about why they created their groups, the stories they’ve heard, and the lessons they’ve learned.
We also discuss the role of community during a time such as the one we are in and what opportunities there still are for even more community members to become more involved or even create their own online groups!
Hear from some of your favorite online community leaders: Texts to Table (Shawn Boynes and Donté P. Shannon); Community by Association (Marjorie Anderson); Content Forum (Dina Lewis and Maggie McGary); Rogue Tulips (Cecilia Sepp); Blk+Brn Professionals (Rhonda Payne); Association Rockstars (Lowell Aplebaum and Amy Hager); and Association Morning Coffee (Nicole Araujo).
So much more becomes possible when more people in an organization are capable, competent, and confident in facilitating or making facilitative contributions. After a long career in higher education, association management, and organizational development consulting, Jeffrey Cufaude has one purpose and passion as he begins his final career chapter: helping people facilitate better.
What can association advocacy experts tell us about the overview of the short- and long- term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on associations and how the "association of associations" is engaging policy and advocacy to support the field at this critical time? We'll discuss the current political landscape on Capitol Hill, the status of recent and future Congressional COVID-19 relief packages, and the future for association advocacy efforts as a whole! (Yes, this could get very meta.) The success of policy and advocacy efforts is amplified by an informed and active community! Don't miss this Association Chat interview with Mary Kate Cunningham, CAE, and Chris Vest, CAE, of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

Instead of relying on guesswork and opinion to understand why groups of people behave the way they do, today’s technology allows us to analyze and synthesize data.
When we truly understand what we all value most, we can unleash enormous passion and power. This is the fundamental disruption of our time: we can now predict and influence what people will do next.
David Allison, founder of The Valuegraphics Database, is our guest for this episode of Association Chat podcast. After a career spent developing ideas and concepts to engage stakeholders for several hundred organizations, David Allison recognized the need for a more scientific method to determine what really influences people to do the things they do.
The result is The Valuegraphics Database, the first global dataset created specifically to help organizations predict and influence behavior using the values we share.
My favorite quote from this interview came right at the end.
"If you need any proof that demographics are harmful and hurtful and divisive, and cause all kinds of strife in our world; I'll point you to a few examples. Black Lives Matter. The Gay Rights Movement. The Women's Rights Movement.
These are all demographics, demographic groups, standing up and saying, 'Do not treat me like a demographic. Treat me like a human being. Do not judge me based on my gender, my sexual orientation, the color of my skin. None of that matters. I just want to be a human, like the rest of you.'
I can't think of any more powerful condemnation of how terrible demographics are for our society."

This episode features my interview with co-creator of the 'Asians Strike Back' Comedy Show which highlights the topics of racism & misinformation, Kyle Marian. Kyle Marian is a comedian, producer, science communications consultant, & former physical anthropologist.
She produces & hosts socially-mindful, inclusive, & accessible comedy shows. She and Esther Chen have decided to combat coronavirus-based racism with comedy and science.
In response to the racism they were witnessing, Marian and Chen hosted their comedy show “Asians Strike Back: A Coronavirus Comedy & Science Show” on March 1, 2020.
The show had both Asian comedians and scientists discuss the pandemic with both jokes and information on how to properly prevent the spread of the virus.
They worked with Symposium: Academic StandUp and the Caveat to host the event in New York City. When I interviewed Kyle, it was just after COVID-19 had been officially declared a pandemic by the WHO.

From the vaults: Scott and Alison Stratten talked with Association Chat for the Association Chat Book Club in December about their book, The Jackass Whisperer: How to Deal With the Worst People at Work, at Home, and Online—Even When the Jackass Is You.
Scott and Alison are co-authors of several best-selling business books, including UnBranding: 100 Branding Lessons for the Age of Disruption, UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging, and The Book of Business (UnAwesome). They're also co-owners of UnMarketing Inc., and co-hosts of The UnPodcast.
Formerly a music industry marketer, national sales training manager, and a professor at the Sheridan College School of Business, Scott ran his "UnAgency" for a nearly a decade before focusing on speaking about social media and marketing, at events, for companies, such as PepsiCo, Adobe, Red Cross, Cirque du Soleil, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Fidelity Investments.
I invited Scott and Alison to join me on the Association Chat Podcast to discuss The Jackass Whisperer, and how the book, despite its light-hearted title, has valuable lessons to teach about empathy, compassion, and cooperation.
“CBS Sunday Morning” correspondent Mo Rocca explains what drew him to highlight stories about historical figures that many people may not know about.
Many things have changed because of the current pandemic, but one thing remains true: we could all use a good laugh right about now. In this episode, Association Chat host KiKi L'Italien interviews humorist, journalist, and actor Mo Rocca about the role that humor plays in times of adversity.
We talked about encyclopedias (World Book > Encyclopedia Britannica), ObitCon being better that ComicCon, and the death of dragons.
Mo is best known for his off-beat news reports and satirical commentary. He is also the host of CBS’s series The Henry Ford’s Innovation Nation. The show features stories about some of the world’s greatest inventions—past and present—and the effort it took to create them, educating and inspiring audiences with stories of creativity, hard work, and passion. Mo created and hosted the Cooking Channel’s My Grandmother’s Ravioli, in which he learned to cook from grandparents across America. He is also a frequent panelist on NPR’s hit weekly quiz show Wait, Wait...Don’t Tell Me! Special thanks to Mike D’Andrea and Greater Talent Network (a UTA company).

As a medical ethicist, Harriet Washington has a unique and courageous voice and deconstructs the politics around medical issues. In addition to giving an abundance of historically accurate information on ‘scientific racism’, she paints a powerful and disturbing portrait of medicine, race, sex, and the abuse of power by telling individual human stories. Washington also makes the case for broader political consciousness of science and technology, challenging audiences to see the world differently and challenge established paradigms in the history of medicine.
On July 23, 2020, Association Chat host KiKi L'Italien interviewed Washington about racism and discrimination in health care, its impact during Covid-19, and how we can begin to address systemic racism within our healthcare system.
More about our guest
Harriet Washington is an award-winning medical writer and editor, and the author of the best-selling book, Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present. In her work, she focuses mainly on bioethics; the history of medicine; African-American health issues; and the intersection of medicine, ethics, and culture.
It was their 100-year celebration and they would be in Las Vegas! Everyone was buzzing! Then COVID-19 hit. Here's the NEW plan!
For this episode, host KiKi L'Italien interviews Amy Ledoux, Chief Learning & Meetings Officer at ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership about ASAE Annual, their decision to take the Annual Meeting to virtual, to make it free for attendees, and how they are approaching exhibitors and sponsors to provide the greatest value.
How are they working with speakers and how will content be provided? What tools and platforms are they using? What are the highs and lows they are encountering and what can attendees expect?
If you have any role in making a virtual conference happen this year, you'll want to watch this interview!

I had so much fun in this interview with the brilliant Max Brooks.
Now Max is kind of amazing. You may be familiar with his books, like The Zombie Survival Guide, World War Z, the graphic novel The Harlem Hellfighters, and his latest Devolution...but did you know that Max is also a lecturer at the Modern War Institute at West Point and the Atlantic Council’s Brent Snowcroft Center for Strategy and Security?
He regularly explores new ways to attack large-scale concerns, which is a valuable exercise when we are all in the midst of a global health crisis. Find out what he says is the answer for "willful ignorance" and why I'm creating my own "Order of the Palm" when I talk with him for this episode of Association Chat.
In a Forbes article titled, "Why Collaborating With Your Competition Can Be A Great Idea," the author shared research indicating that "coopetition" could be a financial win for the organizations that opt to go that direction.
Becoming a collaborator with your competitor can be a challenge, but it might be the best thing you do. For this episode of the Chat, I talk with Tahira Endean and Mahoganey Jones about the ways competitors can work together and why we should all consider it.
The murder of George Floyd was the tipping point for generations of frustration and faith in the social contract citizens have with the police has crumbled.

So I invited Peter O’Neil and Andy Cutler to be my guests. The commercialization of the internet continues, but what does that mean for associations when it comes to the domain they use most? The .ORG addresses our associations use may soon be owned by a for-profit company – and nonprofits, NGOs, and now regulatory officials around the world are in an uproar. We’ll talk about how it all works, the questions that have been answered and those questions that haven’t, and what it means for the future of the internet and associations.

Here is the rough cut of the live interview I did with author Nir Eyal last month in DC for the Association Chat Patreon patron book club members!
We discovered that the digital file from my mic was corrupted and so the sound is a little fuzzy when I'm talking. That said, it's Nir that everyone wants to hear from and his audio is perfect!
As always, a special thanks goes to Paul Gannon and Frank Gannon (Thoughtcast Media) for their time and talents in capturing the video/audio for this special episode. I also want to thank Mercer for providing the space in DC for the interview.

In this episode, KiKi interviews Jane Oates, president of WorkingNation.
WorkingNation is a nonprofit campaign founded in 2016 by venture capitalist Art Bilger to expose hard truths about the looming unemployment crisis and bring the country together to create and amplify solutions for a changing economy.
An educator and policy expert, Jane was appointed by President Barack Obama as Assistant Secretary of the Department of Labor for Employment and Training in June 2009. Jane led the Employment and Training Administration (ETA) in its mission to design and deliver high-quality training and employment programs for our nation’s workers.
Prior to her appointment, Jane served as Executive Director of the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education and Senior Advisor to Governor Jon S. Corzine. For a decade before, Jane served as Senior Policy Advisor to Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
Jane began her career as a teacher in the Boston and Philadelphia public schools and later as a field researcher at Temple University’s Center for Research in Human Development and Education. She received her BA in Education from Boston College and an M.Ed in Reading from Arcadia University.
In this episode, KiKi interviews Jane about the role associations play in facing workforce challenges and some of the great examples of associations collaborating with other institutions to lead the way in overcoming those challenges for their industries.
Please enjoy this episode of Association Chat discussing the future of work and associations’ role in that future with the president of WorkingNation Jane Oates.
In this episode, KiKi interviews Philippa Hughes, a social sculptor, creative placemaker, and cultural strategist. Hughes designs art-fueled projects “connecting people who would not normally meet in meaningful, humanizing dialogue.”
Her current project, “Looking for America” is on tour and features discussions on what it means to be American.
Hmmm...might she have something intriguing to teach association executives who are charged with connecting people and providing a safe place for civil discourse?
Looking for America is a project in collaboration with New American Economy, American University School of Public Affairs, and CuriosityConnects.us. It is a new initiative exploring immigration and American identity in six dynamic communities across the United States through public art, storytelling, and dialogue.
In each community, Looking for America partners with local cultural institutions to curate art exhibitions featuring immigrant and U.S.-born artists who answer the question, “What does it mean to be American in your community?” Community members from different backgrounds and political identities are invited to engage with each exhibition and offer their own perspectives and stories over a shared meal.
Host KiKi L’Italien interviews two experts to tell us what we can learn about convincing others from a crisis communications expert and hostage negotiator!
Communications expert Adele Cehrs and former FBI special agent and hostage negotiator Chip Massey talks with Association Chat about advanced communications skills every leader needs.
Body language can be super revealing. But did you know that FBI hostage negotiators do about 90% of their work over the phone, where body language isn’t even a factor? They use the power of their voice to connect with others and get what they’re after. It’s like closing a sale over a call.
Whether you’re diffusing a crisis situation or trying to get a new client, everyone wants to get better at reading people. Learn some super comms skills in this interview with Association Chat!
KiKi L’Italien interviews David Allison about “Valuegraphics,” the focus of his recent book and the research that could (should) change the way you talk to your audiences.
David Allison describes Valuegraphics as a replacement system for understanding how groups of people behave.

In this episode, Association Chat host KiKi L’Italien interviews Rachel Sheerin, an international keynote speaker and trainer who is dedicated to helping us all grow, sell and thrive.
At a time when our world needs new solutions for new problems in every industry, collaborating and working together is more important than ever.
And associations have been doing this by providing the communities and relationships that have led the way on these innovations for years. But with more competition for our time and attention than ever before, it takes a more thoughtful approach to sell people on the idea of the work that goes into a community and the value that goes in and out of it.
This week we’re taking a look at community and how to best position it as a benefit an opportunity so that members and prospective members see the value in their engagement – whether it be as a volunteer, Board member, chapter member, or something else entirely!
Recently named Speaker of the Year by NACE and featured in Inc Magazine, Rachel's high-energy keynotes and programs have served conference and annual meeting audiences from Spain to Seattle, and will soon be seen on the TEDx stage!
Rachel's keynotes and training have been raved about by a lot of awesome associations like MPI, ESPA, WRPA and more, and her corporate clients – folks like The Ritz Carlton, Hilton, Berkshire Hathaway and more.
Rachel loves associations - she currently serves as International Director of Education for WIPA, is a long time NACE member and likes her margaritas on the rocks.

In this episode, the Association Women Technology Champions (AWTC) and Association Chat joined forces for a session on Event Technology Stacks!
Events and meetings are central to associations, but often the technology supporting them is anything but centralized. Today, a successful event often requires a cornucopia of systems, from exhibit management systems to registration systems.
This is the Event Technology Stack.
The quality of your Event Technology Stack can dramatically affect your bottom line and attendee experience.
This episode was unique and offered an interactive, frank discussion with leading experts in association events to learn about how to build and perfect your Event Technology Stack.

Recently, I finally got my wish to talk with Rachel and it was everything I’d hoped it would be and more. In fact, I might have gushed a little more than usual about my conversation with her.
We talked about the state of community, where community goes wrong, what companies don’t understand about community, and where our own histories with community originated (Rachel’s story is fascinating!).
Please, take a seat and a sip of your beverage of choice, and listen in on this interview with Rachel Happe.

How can the philosophies, habits, and models in entrepreneurship catalyze associations? That’s what we’re talking about this week on Association Chat when I interview the founder of the Associations Catalyzing Entrepreneurship (ACE) group Meena Dayak.
How can the philosophies, habits, and models in entrepreneurship catalyze associations? That’s what we’re talking about this week on Association Chat.
I’m KiKi L’Italien, your host at kikilitalien.com. If you are a fan, please do me a favor. Like and subscribe.
When we look at associations, a lot of times we get bogged down by thinking of them as these unwieldy, rigid organizations.
We can look at entrepreneurs, large innovative companies, and the startup culture and begin to wonder about the future for associations and maybe even wonder if and how to let some of those more entrepreneurial ideas trickle in.
Maybe it’s incubators, or maybe it’s design thinking, or product development. Maybe it’s ideas. Whatever it is, we want to make our associations as strong and effective as possible.
But it’s not just effectiveness or efficiency we want, right? We actually want to move from being the slow, less creative, more traditional institutions to being transformative in how our members and the world think about or use our information. We’re looking at entrepreneurship because we want to transform the way we think or do things institutionally.
So what is it about entrepreneurship that really make that difference? For me, it’s a devotion to curiosity and not settling for the status quo, looking for creative ways to better connect and lead our industries, our members, and to move beyond relevance into excellence.
To explore this more, this week I’m visiting with the Associations Catalyzing Entrepreneurship group in Washington, DC, and the founder of ACE Meena Dayak.
This episode's special guest is Neen James.
Neen has boundless energy, is quick-witted and always offers powerful strategies for paying attention to what matters so you can get more done and create more significant moments at work, and home.

Welcome to today’s inspiration! I am KiKi L’Italien and today I wanted to continue on the exploration of curiosity. I heard from yet one more human being yesterday who heard this short briefing and responded, so at least I know there are a few people who might be listening to these short diatribes of mine.
Poem shared: Earthworm by Anne Sexton
Welcome to today’s inspiration! I’m KiKi L’Italien and today I’m thinking about the beauty of curiosity.
I’ve been writing more lately than in any of the years since college. And one thing I can say with certainty is that once you begin showing up for the writing, the words you choose, the words you notice, begin to change.
Today I want to start you off with some words that inspired me this morning.
A Song Of The Future Sail fast, sail fast,
Ark of my hopes, Ark of my dreams;
Sweep lordly o'er the drowned Past,
Fly glittering through the sun's strange beams;
Sail fast, sail fast.
Breaths of new buds from off some drying lea
With news about the Future scent the sea:
My brain is beating like the heart of Haste:
I'll loose me a bird upon this Present waste;
Go, trembling song,
And stay not long; oh, stay not long:
Thou'rt only a gray and sober dove,
But thine eye is faith and thy wing is love.
Sidney Lanier
One of the best things I love about attending conferences is meeting new people and finding out about the amazing work that they do. It is fortifying. When my friend, Lauren, tagged me and a person named Jason Williams on a post, suggesting we connect while attending the Collision technology conference in Toronto, I quickly did some Google sleuthing to find out more about the person I was about to meet. Once I did that, I knew I had to get some time for a mini-interview with Jason. Jason is the Executive Director for Centric, a 501c3 nonprofit that connects, educates and celebrates Indiana's problem solvers. Centric exists to increase the recognition of Indiana as a global center of innovation. From their initial gatherings in 2007, Jason and his crew have built an incredible community of people and companies that spans industries and creates serendipity that may never occur otherwise. I sat down with Jason to get to know him better and to make the most of Collision conference, where I wanted to ask entrepreneurs and tech leaders about community, trust, and technology. I hope you enjoy!

Find out how BYT does it and the philosophy that leads BYT to build the biggest buzz in the biz!
What if you could harness all the best wisdom - knowledge, experience, intuition - from a group of people and use it to make extremely accurate decisions and predictions? Would that be valuable for you? If the answer is yes, you must watch this interview.
A few weeks ago I saw a tweet from my friend Adrian Segar, who literally wrote the book on unconferences, discussing the wisdom of crowds sharing why an unconference would always be better than a conference designed using a conference curator, or one expert, who helped craft a vision for what a conference should be.
And it got me thinking about an interesting option...
And that option came from a segment I watched in an episode of the new Amazon Prime Video docuseries - it was just released February 22 - called This Giant Beast That is the Global Economy.
I remembered one segment, in particular, featuring a researcher talking with the host, Kal Penn, about collective intelligence, using Swarm AI technology, that could harness all the best wisdom from a group of people and make extremely accurate decisions.
And I wondered could this technology be used to make better conferences? Or, for associations of every industry facing tremendous change and disruption, could Swarm AI or hive intelligence help make strategic decisions about an organization’s mission?
Anyone who sees value in small data, big data, qualitative and quantitative research, any leader who makes big decisions for a group of people needs to hear about our topic.
So I reached out to the researcher and his company!
Dr. Louis Rosenberg received his Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees from Stanford and his doctoral work focused on robotics, virtual reality, and human-computer interaction.
As a researcher at the U.S. Air Force’s Armstrong Labs, he created the ‘Virtual Fixtures’ system, the first Augmented Reality platform ever built. He has been awarded more than 300 patents for his technological efforts.
Dr. Louis Rosenberg is CEO and Chief Scientist of Unanimous AI, a company focused on amplifying the intelligence of networked human groups using AI algorithms modeled after natural swarms and today I am happy to welcome Louis to the show to talk with us more about these questions and so many others!

Simon Sinek says “Working hard for something you don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something you love is called passion.”
My guest for this episode is helping people connect their passion and professions and she’s GOOD at it, too!

How Comfortable Are You With Challenging the Status Quo?
Many of us might think we are pretty good at testing our assumptions, but my guest for this episode is masterful at it. In fact, she’s a successful social entrepreneur [precisely because she’s so good at disruption. And she even wrote a book to help us all get better at “radically challenging the status quo,” too, called Disrupt-Her (like disruptor...get it?)

CURIOSITY, COMMUNITY, and DEEPER CONNECTION | Andrew Horn Guests | Association Chat with KiKi L'Italien
How do You Avoid Auto-Piloting Your Life?!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As you begin your day in whatever your morning routine looks like, I want you to think about what life would look like if you weren’t operating out of fear and opted instead to move in a more purposeful direction. One with intent. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Would you hide from meeting people or get excited about the chance to learn about someone else’s experience? Would you be in a rush to make the numbers or opt instead for building a relationship?
From the time we are born, so many of us seem to witness a loss in our curiosity about ourselves, others, and in the world around us.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Why is that? Can we change it? If so, how?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For this interview, I talk with the man who has been called "the Dale Carnegie for the Digital Age," Andrew Horn.
I ask him about meaningful conversations, Social Flow, and his thoughts about community. I hope you enjoy it.
She has almost half a million people across the globe up and dancing before sunrise. KiKi serves as leader and community architect for Association Chat, an online community and weekly podcast with special events, products, and services for the association industry. Association Chat's reason for existing is to bring the association community together – and it has been doing that since May 2009. She is our just-in-time resource every time we're looking for that new idea.” – Stacy Tetschner, CEO, United Motorcoach Association (past CEO of National Speakers Association 1991-2017) Awards The SURGE Innovation Pioneer, November 2018 SURGE Innovation Pioneer is a person nominated and voted on by the association community whose initiative has sparked meaningful change and taking the association space towards a new and bright future. Meetings Today Trendsetter of the Year, July 2017 The Meetings Today Trendsetter of the Year lights the way for others in the meetings industry.
We talk about the events that happened since the last podcast episode, the Association Chat "Why Associations Matter" project and community.
“You’re only two clicks away from uncovering a lie,” is the mantra Phil Riggins, founder of the Brand & Reputation Collective (the BRC) in the UK, now lives by.
Is it the mantra for the age we live in?
The 2019 Edelman Trust Barometer reveals that trust has changed profoundly in the past year—people have shifted their trust to the relationships within their control, most notably their employers.
Globally, 75 percent of people trust “my employer” to do what is right, significantly more than NGOs (57 percent), business (56 percent) and media (47 percent).
Can your organization optimize for trust? Let's find out how Gary LaBranche, Matthew D'Uva, and Nick Parker's organizations do it on this episode!
How do association leaders and communications experts avoid creating a crisis in times of “radical uncertainty” and change? I talk with association executives and a podcast producer in the Midwest about navigating these treacherous waters.
Episode #90 Communication Challenges in the Age of "Fake News"
Fear runs rampant as many citizens carry eroding trust in the internet as well as the foundations of democracy, 2019 has already witnessed a historic government shutdown, ongoing claims from the President of the United States that "the media is the enemy of the people", and in the midst of it all, we must still communicate with our Board, members, the media, and the public.

Blake and KiKi laugh about not going to their high school reunions while David Burkus shares why it's those dormant ties that could amount to selling the UFC.
David is a best-selling author, sought after speaker and associate professor of leadership and innovation at Oral Roberts University.
His newest book, Friend of a Friend, offers readers a new perspective on how to grow their networks and build key connections—one based on the science of human behavior, not rote networking advice. - Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
- Superheroes and Neil Gaiman
- The history of the UFC

When I reflected on 2018 and my biggest regrets over the year, thinking about the times I had my most negative experiences, it almost always had to do with not setting appropriate boundaries. These examples could usually be summed up with the saying, “no good deed goes unpunished.”
How do you know when to say, “sorry, I can’t”?
Sometimes I do interviews that don’t have a live audience and I try to figure out when and where to add them to what I’m already doing with the Association Chat podcast.
When I had a chance to catch up with my good friend, event designer Tahira Endean, it was as she was wrapping up a world tour of experiences, including attending The College of Extraordinary Experiences in Poland.
We talked about all kinds of things, but the theme of our conversation, the through line, was designing experience.
Here is a little piece of that discussion. I’ll be sharing more from that interview (and others from 2018 on the same topic) in the coming days.
As we went into this part of our conversation, Tahira had just started talking about the importance of rapid prototyping.
For more on this topic, watch the Amplified Growth blog in the coming days.

Why is Foresight the Future of Governing?
For associations, the future of governing must be different than its past, and now is the moment to begin creating it. Association boards, chief staff executives and other governing contributors have a unique opportunity to work together and design a more generative integration of stewardship, governing and foresight that can strengthen board performance as well as prepare their associations, stakeholders and broader industry and professional systems to thrive in a world experiencing transformation.
In this special Association Chat, KiKi interviews Jeff De Cagna, executive advisor for Foresight First LLC and author of the new eBook, Foresight is The Future of Governing: Building Thrivable Boards, Stakeholders and Systems for the 21st Century.
(The eBook is available as a free download at http://futureofgoverningbook.com.)
Among the questions KiKi and Jeff will discuss:
Association professionals often travel for business, attending conferences and meetings, visiting hotels, and likely passing by human trafficking taking place right under our noses.
Find out what sex trafficking looks like, what to do if you suspect it is happening, and what some industry insiders are doing to proactively fight it.
Our guests will help us understand the issue a little better and how it impacts associations and association professionals. Guests on this episode include:

So Thanksgiving is happening Thursday, November 22nd and what does that mean? Pumpkin pie, family gatherings, and a reminder for all of us to be thankful.
There are all kinds of magazines that I’ve seen pushing gratitude and telling us why we’ll be healthier, happier, and more successful if we practice gratitude.
But will we really? And how do we do a better job of practicing gratitude, anyway?
Our guest to help us understand this better is Lauren LeMunyan, The Spitfire Coach and author of the book, Spitting Fire.

CEO succession planning is one of the most important duties of every association board of directors - and of every incumbent CEO. But few associations - even large, sophisticated ones - have developed comprehensive succession plans.
In this episode of Association Chat we explore why that is, and how to develop a succession plan with the author of a recent book on the subject and a veteran search executive who is a leader in the association community.
Join KiKi L'Italien (Host of Association Chat), Gary LaBranche (President & CEO, National Investor Relations Institute), and Lorraine Lavet (National Association Practice Leader and Senior Client Partner at Korn/Ferry International) for a fascinating and in-depth conversation about comprehensive succession plans.
What does design thinking entail and how are associations using it?

Thanks again for listening to the Association Chat News Flash. Learn more at associationchat.com and check back regularly for another Association Chat News Flash Briefing.
Welcome to Association Chat News! I’m your host, KiKi L’Italien, and let’s talk about this Association Chat News flash briefing for the first week of October – October 1, 2018.
This is the 4th quarter of 2018 and this is about the time we start to see a few predictable things happen in the association space.
If you are in any kind of communications or marketing, you are already looking at the “How to End 2018 Strong” or “Top Trends to Know About for 2019” types of content.
As much as I like to smirk at titles like this, I click on more of those types of items than anyone else. Here’s what I’m thinking are my “Top Three Ways to End 2018 Strong for Association Chat”:
So that’s my Association Chat plan for the last three months of 2018. What’s on your agenda? Share your plans with me by tweeting me @kikilitalien using the hashtag #associationflash. I’m curious to find out what others are planning and I think sharing our goals can sometimes lead to better outcomes.
On this week’s Chat interview I talk with American Mensa Ed/CEO Trevor Mitchell about how Mensa is leveraging cultural influences to enhance its brand through new partnership and licensing opportunities, as well as discussing how the membership is shaping the perception, our perception, of high intelligence.
You can hear all that and more on Tuesday’s chat live at 2 pm EST.

Have a great week everyone!
Last week ended with the Association Chat interview with ASAE leaders John Graham, Rhonda Payne, and Reggie Henry talking with me about the recent controversy surrounding the Great Ideas Call for Content Leaders, plagiarism, paying speakers (or not), and how all of these things are being communicated with the membership.
Over 130 registered to hear this interview on Crowdcast and over 500 watched on Facebook Live!
It was a fascinating discussion and one you can hear the entirety of on the Association Chat Podcast or on the Association Chat website.
On this week’s Chat interview I talk with Lenora Knapp about “The Show & Tell of Microcredentialing.” She has just released a new book covering this topic and I will ask her about the business of microcredentialing, the appeal of this offering, the costs associated, and how some associations get started with it.
You can hear all that and more on Tuesday’s chat live at 2 pm EST.
That all happens on Tuesday at 2 pm EST live on the Crowdcast platform. You can find out more and link to register to the Chat over on the Association Chat website associationchat.com.

The ASAE Great Ideas Brouhaha - (Recorded September 21, 2018 - 12:30 EST)
A seemingly simple post sharing the ASAE Great Ideas Call for Speakers was posted to the members-only Association Chat Facebook Group on Friday, September 6, 2018.
This post sparked a controversy over ethics issues concerning plagiarism, intellectual property, and equity of membership.

Summary: The American Society of Association Executives responds to criticism over their Great Ideas call for papers, what are you giving away when you sign that next speaker agreement, and what do associations still need to learn about D&I – on this week’s Association Chat News Flash Briefing.
A simple Facebook post sharing ASAE’s new process for applying to speak at next year’s Great Ideas Conference became the focus for attention last week when members of the group found the language used to describe the suggested session prototypes a little too similar to session topics and specialty areas authored by specific consultants throughout the industry.
When other session descriptions turned out to have been taken without attribution or citation from published articles in sources like Harvard Business Review and Inc, plagiarism concerns were heightened and a question of ethics arose around those concerns and other aspects of the Call For Papers were raised.
ASAE’s CEO John Graham issued a statement to the Association Chat community on Friday to address some of this concern. You can find this statement over on associationchat.com
The statement satisfied many who wanted to make sure that something was being done.
But questions linger.
Some post comments from the community ask for follow-up information from ASAE including:

Have a great week everyone!
Welcome to Association Chat News! I’m your host, KiKi L’Italien, and it’s Monday, so let’s talk about this Association News flash briefing for September 10, 2018.
Things got pretty fired up in Association Chat-land last Friday. In case you missed it, let’s get you caught up-to-speed.
First, we dealt with long-seeded issues over member value. When a consultant member of ASAE posted a blog to Collaborate, the members’-only community platform, some people thought it was more self-promotional than a community resource, and should be taken down. This triggered a discussion dredging up longtime concerns about membership value and the perceived imbalance between membership as a consultant versus association executives.
Later, things again got heated on the Association Chat Facebook Group over a post sharing ASAE’s new process for applying to speak at next year’s Great Ideas Conference. Members of the group found the language used to describe the suggested session prototypes suspiciously similar to session topics and specialty areas authored by specific consultants throughout the industry.
As more people began to study the language in question, other session descriptions surfaced suggesting they too may have been lifted from other published articles, generating potential plagiarism concerns.
Association Chat posters also discussed concerns about the new ASAE process for identifying conference content, wondering if the process for generating content for a meeting focused on innovation was itself not innovative enough.
With this discussion still fresh and ongoing, several questions remain.
Clearly, it will be interesting to follow these conversations and see what happens next.
You can see what happens next on this news and share your take on things over on the Association Chat Facebook Group.
And don’t forget! You can subscribe for the daily flash briefing and regular tips about association chat news on the AssociationChat.com website.
Check back in later this week for the next Association Chat News flash briefing.
What does KiKi think about the association industry after hosting weekly conversations about it for over nine years? What are her plans for Association Chat's future? How does her own consulting business with Amplified Growth play into what she is doing with the Chat?
On this Association Chat, Vista Cova consultant Lowell Aplebaum "flips the script" and interviews KiKi L'Italien, the usual host of Association Chat.
Please join us for this one-of-a-kind interview on Association Chat.

In 2015 Nancy Belmont launched a project called the Courage Wallthat captured the attention of national and international media. The Courage Wall is a huge public chalkboard that reads, “I WISH I HAD THE COURAGE TO . . . ®” Nancy was interviewed on the TODAY Show, was featured internationally on Al Jazeera Network, and was highlighted in print media including The Washington Postand Forbes Magazine. The project was even tweeted by First Lady Michelle Obama.
In 2016, Nancy launched the UNITY Project, interactive public art that aims to bring people together to celebrate individuality and strengthen the ties that bind us together. The project went viral with an Upworthy video that captured over 8 million views. Nancy created a manual to empower others to bring UNITY to their communities. To-date, over 1,000 people from 47 states and 30 countries have downloaded the manual.
In December of 2016, she created Be the Light, a project that helped people identify how they would share their light with the world. Over the course of four weeks, thousands of people lit candles and wrote intentions of actions they would take to spread light and love. The moving ABC story on the project recently won an Emmy Award.
In June of 2017, Nancy launched Soar, a project that encourages people to let go of burdens that hold them back from stepping into their best selves. Participants identify a burden they are ready to release, write that burden on a rock and place the rock in a bin. Then they are invited to hang a brightly colored origami bird to symbolize their lightness and freedom from that burden. The project helps us understand that we are not alone in the human journey and reminds us of our individual and collective greatness.
Nancy’s latest project, The Sanctuary, highlights people’s inner critic. Participants identify a negative thought about themselves that does not serve them. They discard that thought by writing it on a slip of paper that is ceremonially burned at the end of the project. They then craft a positive affirmation to take its place and write it on a colorful disc. Participants hang their positive affirmations in a field surrounded by thousands of other expansive thoughts, creating a sanctuary of limitless thinking.

Welcome to Association Chat News Flash Briefing - I’m KiKi L’Italien and here’s what you need to know for Tuesday, June 26th, 2018!
Today, Tuesday, you can listen to 2 live Association Chat interviews back-to-back starting at 12:30 pm EDT!
The first interview is all about GDPR: It's been a month since The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect and what has happened since then? I’ll ask members of the UK data privacy company The Trust Bridge about what’s happened since GDPR went into effect and the questions we all need to be asking ourselves today. Which murky rules have been clarified and which remain shrouded in mystery? We’ll find out today at 12:30 pm EDT.
After that, you can find out about a member engagement channel that too many associations aren’t leveraging. In fact, this channel is more often referred to as baggage and I have three guests that will challenge you to explore this channel further today at 2 pm EDT!
Look for more information about how to register on associationchat.com!
That’s it for today - Check back again soon for the next Association Chat Daily Briefing.

GDPR and Associations ...a Month Later It's been a month since The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took effect and what has happened since then?
We'll discuss that on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at 12:30 pm EDT for a special edition of Association Chat.
From a The Verge article earlier this year:
But perhaps the GDPR requirement that has everyone tearing their hair out the most is the data subject access request. EU residents have the right to request access to review personal information gathered by companies. Those users — called “data subjects” in GDPR parlance — can ask for their information to be deleted, to be corrected if it’s incorrect, and even get delivered to them in a portable form. But that data might be on five different servers and in god knows how many formats. (This is assuming the company even knows that the data exists in the first place.) A big part of becoming GDPR compliant is setting up internal infrastructures so that these requests can be responded to.
No one’s ready for GDPR. (2018). The Verge. Retrieved 20 June 2018, from https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/22/17378688/gdpr-general-data-protection-regulation-eu

Member Engagement or Old Baggage? There’s a member engagement channel that too many associations aren’t leveraging. In fact, this channel is more often referred to as baggage. There are a number of associations who have turned the baggage into an asset. The baggage we’re referring to? Hint: it is your components – call them chapters, affiliates, sections or any other name and the potential is member engagement, awareness, sales, and growth.
We’ll share a few stories, plus research culled from a survey of association CEOs and association benchmarking study.

Charlotte Muylaert, Billhighway
Peggy Hoffman, FASAE, CAE, Mariner Management
Dresden Farrand, MPA, MPP, CAE, Vice President of Chapter Development, Independent Electrical Contractors, Inc. (IEC)

There should be no doubt that the future of learning and work will look vastly different than its present; the profound implications of accelerating technology adoption, an aging workforce, economic inequality and other factors will see to that. If associations are going to be influential contributors to shaping that future, however, their decision-makers will need to shift current thinking in fundamental ways, steer clear of counterproductive hype and focus on how their organizations can meaningfully help their current and future stakeholders thrive in this dynamic environment.

Association Chat News Daily Flash Briefing
Some sad news this morning as we learned of Anthony Bourdain’s death by an apparent suicide – Bourdain was a chef, author, and TV personality who also appeared years ago at an ASAE conference to talk about lessons about management from running a kitchen.
Bourdain's suicide may not be association news specifically, but it does impact us all.
There is an epidemic of suicide in the United States and Bourdain’s death and fashion designer Kate Spade’s unexpected suicide earlier this week has brought a focus to this situation in Americans’ minds.
Why is this happening and what can we do about it? How can we identify the signals in others that they may be in danger? What can associations do to curb this problem?
There are a lot of questions to be sure. More than what this Flash Briefing can contend with.
Perhaps as we go through our day today we think on this and discuss it with each other online.
Or call each other.
Or actually meet with each other in person.
Maybe we do something instead of shaking our heads and moving along.
Maybe.
This wasn’t the Flash Briefing I had in mind to post for today, but I had to share it.
I’ll post another briefing later with more information about next week’s events and some info on things that happened this week, including some excerpts from my interview with association contrarian Jeff De Cagna.
Please let me know if this news of suicide is getting to you too. Send me a message on Facebook or Twitter or Instagram @kikilitalien or email me kiki@amplifiedgrowth.net and let me know.
If you are thinking about suicide...if you or anyone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline @800273TALK (8255).
Here is the latest news in the association realm for Wednesday, June 6th, 2018!
Yesterday I interviewed Jeff de Cagna on Association Chat. The title for that show?
“From Hype to Help: Associations and the Future of Learning and Work.”
Jeff talked about why leaders need to shift their thinking and avoid orthodoxy.
The reason we need to make this change?
Jeff De Cagna says association leaders need to lead their members and association staff in nurturing learning because new tech, like machine learning and AI, is transforming industries and society so that we need to become better at the human strengths we have...embracing creativity, ingenuity, and curiosity to move from incidental learning to intentional learning.
It was an amazing interview with a great thought leader in the association space and you can catch the edited podcast version of the Association Chat podcast!
Hope you are having a great week everyone and catch you later on the next Association Chat Flash Briefing!

What has Byers witnessed in her experiences with associations since then? Have associations become more nimble or are we still in danger of losing out to commercial enterprises that can supply the same benefits with speed? The Dangers of Generational Orthodoxy
In shaping their approach to both the present and the future, associations are all in on generational thinking. The language of generations is featured prominently in association publications and social media, frequently heard at association conferences and meetings and factored deeply into how associations organize their work, especially the work of membership recruitment.
But many of the assumptions made by generational thinking are flawed, misguided or just plain wrong, a form of emergent orthodoxy that may well do more harm than good for associations.
Join KiKi for what promises to be a provocative conversation with association contrarian Jeff De Cagna of Foresight First LLC about how you and your association can think and act beyond generational orthodoxy and learn with the unfolding under 40 future!

Sexual harassment in Hollywood and Silicon Valley is dominating news cycles. Many people in the association and meetings space wonder when the eye of the storm will turn toward their industries and make examples of them. Others are concerned whether they've done enough to protect their employees and members from harm.
For this Association Chat, I talk with the brilliant journo/professor/podcast host Ashley Milne-Tyte about the problems our society faces with sexual harassment in the workplace, what some leaders are doing to prevent it, and steps we can take to improve on this issue.
More about Ashley (from her LinkedIn profile):

I produce stories for Marketplace, NPR, WNYC and Voice of America and have written for publications including Metro, the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Phoenix Focus, Women of Influence and Quill, the Society of Professional Journalists magazine. What can we learn about creativity and persistence from the man who holds the Guinness World Record for Most Consecutive Days Writing a Song?
Twitter: @songadaymann
This show is all about creativity and persistence. Many people who promise they’ll do something consistently, creative or not, give up on it. Maybe they give up for a moment or maybe it's a lifetime.
But in this show, we meet someone who decided to do something every day in January of 2009 and 10 years later he's still doing it.
What can we learn about creativity and persistence from the man who holds the Guinness World Record for Most Consecutive Days Writing a Song?
Jonathan Mann is an American singer-songwriter, best known for creating and publishing a new song and video each day since January 2009, under the YouTube channel named "Song A Day."

Making a decision to buy a high-dollar solution for your organization is hard. But what happens when you run into conflicting information about that solution? How do you decide?
For this Review Chat, we talk with Michelle Steward and Jim Narus, researchers who have explored the topic of online reviews and how people make decisions.
Are we approaching a paradigm shift in the testing industry? Join host KiKi L'Italien for Association Chat as she interviews Dr. Greg Sadesky (@gsadesky) & ANSI Assessor Mickie Rops (@mickierops) about high-stakes testing and remote proctoring.
"The Proctor Is In" explores a topic that might blow the lid off of what you think you know about professional testing.
Greg Sadesky is a psychometrician and the Chief Scientific Officer of Yardstick Testing and Training Experts. The company specializes in e-learning and high-stakes testing for professional associations.
Mickie S. Rops is a consultant who specializes in educating organizations on credentialing options and guiding them in the decision as to which credentialing program, if any, is the right fit for the challenges they face. She also conducts audits of full programs or program components to make recommendations for improvement, and she researches and writes background papers to inform decision-making.
Communication is changing. Technology is changing. Social norms are changing. What does this mean for the workplace?
For this episode of Association Chat, I'll be talking with Dave Will (Co-founder and CEO at PropFuel) and Jamie Notter (Partner at WorkXO Solutions) about today's workplace, the needs - old and new - for creating a productive and successful work environment, and what smart leaders need to think about to make sure their workplaces are set up for success in 2018.

Why aren’t associations more innovative when it comes to tech maturity? What’s holding us back?
For this show, I jumped off the stage at AMS Fest in Washington, DC, and ran to my computer to talk with experts about tech innovation (or the lack thereof) in the association industry. [Sorry for any of the "crowd noise" behind me in the audio]
This topic, studied by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Foundation, sheds light on information technology (IT) maturity levels at associations.
In its survey, only 9% of associations were found to be truly innovative.
So I wanted to know: What are the major causes holding associations back? How do more innovative associations overcome this challenge? Could the key lie in a stronger relationship between the CIO and CEO be the solution, or is there a deeper issue at hand?
Some questions we discussed on this show:

What Will We Do for Work? Associations and Entrepreneurs Taking on The Skills Gap
From https://talentedlearning.com/how-associations-bridge-skills-gap-digital-badges/: "According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in December 2016 there were 5.6 million open jobs in this country and only 98,000 were added in March 2017. That includes many notoriously hard-to-fill jobs. These persistently unfilled positions are attributed to an unfortunate and somewhat ironic phenomenon called the “skills gap.”
Skills gap theorists say that formal education isn’t preparing enough candidates for specialized high-skill, high-growth jobs such as data analysis, user experience design and software programming. Traditional education isn’t producing enough qualified people to support today’s rapidly changing business needs. And this talent supply problem is only compounded by a decreasing 4.5% unemployment rate."

Having “high potential” does not mean performing at maximum capability. While many believe they are doing all they can, a huge number of professionals are frustrated because they are coming up short of their personal expectations (and the expectations of others). Some have become paralyzed from taking risks by the fear of failure, while others are not sure what is holding them back. Speaker and facilitator Thom Singer has surveyed hundreds of people and the feedback is stunning that the majority of people are confident they can have greater success in their career.
Companies in all sectors have employees who have reached a plateau or have become stuck in the “high middle”. There is a very real gap between potential and results, and Thom wants to show people the path to doing more at any stage of their career.
Beyond excuses and finger pointing, this interactive presentation gets to the heart of how people can accomplish more and enjoy their work. For decades companies have been identifying and training their “high potential” employees, but these individuals are not always growing into the organization’s future leaders. There is a clear paradox around potential.
The “future of work” is about more than telecommuting and stand up desks. Finding ways to transcend potential, goals, educations, action, hard work and serendipity is key to long term success. Those who are focused on goal setting, realistic assessments, teamwork, successful human engagement, cross-selling, and other skills will help their company reach the highest potential and be more fulfilled in their jobs.
This gap is true not only for individuals but also for organizations. It is common to see a startup or other company that has a lot of potential, only to later witness it being shut down. While it is not possible to always achieve full potential (as once you get there, new opportunities will appear that creates a fresh path toward more potential), the constant struggle to bridge the gap will not happen by accident. Nobody should be comfortable relying on luck as the answer to their future.

Welcome to the Talent Economy—a 21st century economy characterized by unprecedented innovation, connectivity, disruption, and opportunity. Unfortunately, the positive attributes of this economy have been largely overshadowed thus far. With job satisfaction declining across three decades, employee turnover costing organizations billions, profitability shrinking, and millions of Boomers retiring, the impetus to close the widening gap between talent-development practices and business impact has never been greater.
For too long, we’ve just assumed there is no other way. But Sarah Sladek proves there is another way.
Drawing from documented workforce and talent-development research, as well as her own ongoing study of generational impacts, her presentation cites numerous examples of organizations that have been capable of engaging employees in this era of disruption—what they did, why it worked, and how it’s made a difference to the organizations’ outlook and bottom line.
Sladek proves that it’s possible to create an organization designed to engage talent, and she provides audiences with the guidance to do it.
About the Author Sarah Sladek was leading the charge for organizations and companies to adapt to younger generations long before anybody else. Concerned about declining engagement in our nation’s membership associations, non-profits, and workplaces, Sarah Sladek founded XYZ University in 2002 and her fifth book, Talent Generation, will be published this year.

On this Association Chat, host KiKi L'Italien interviews special guest Adrian Segar about what he has called the "Meeting Industry's Dirty Little Secret."
In Adrian's words, "We spend vast sums of money and consign umpteen person-hours to a meeting — and we have no idea whether it made any significant long-term difference to the people who attended it!"
Adrian is an acknowledged innovator and speaker on participant-led event design, and facilitates two popular opening and closing plenaries. His latest book, The Power of Participation: Creating Conferences That Deliver Learning, Connection, Engagement, and Action—described by Paul Salinger, VP of Marketing, Oracle, as a book that “should be OPEN on every meeting planner’s and event marketer’s desk, and used every day”—is a compendium of participation techniques that meeting planners and presenters can use to significantly improve any meeting session.

Drones – Amazing technology offering opportunities and dilemmas for all of us! But how much do you really know about drones and what do you NEED to know in order to do your due diligence as a leader?
Meet the extreme leader of Geoteaming – John Chen. He climbs mountains, walks on fire, swims with dolphins in the wild, rides Harleys and snowboards out of helicopters. He's also been doing some pretty amazing things using drones at events.
Sounds cool, right?
But what kinds of things EXACTLY can we do with drones at our meetings? What are the possibilities? What are the concerns? What are some of the legal issues we need to be aware of?
These are a lot of questions for one person, so for this episode of Association Chat, I also brought on expert photographer Chuck Fazio whom you might remember from a previous episode. He's also been using drones at meetings and when John and Chuck get talking, some amazing things happen...including the potential birth of a NEW ASSOCIATION!
“With every big risk comes a hidden reward. It may not be what you think it is, it may be better!” – John Chen

Even More About This Episode
With the need identified, to help organizations embrace creative thinking, Billy learned everything he could about group facilitation, program delivery and how to be an effective, entertaining team building speaker. He delved into the connections between the type of storytelling songwriters use and the type of storytelling that corporations use to increase employee engagement and to share mission or vision.
Creative courage is mostly a willingness to experiment; to play with new ideas and to search for solutions without knowing if you’ll get results. Failure is an integral part of success. The courage to chase ideas, fail more than once and try again is foundational to the culture of every genuinely innovative organization.

ABOUT THE PODCAST
Association Chat is a seven-year conversation that began with a weekly Twitter meeting on Tuesday at 2pm EST(#assnchat), that KiKi L'Italien grew to a weekly webcast that has also evolved into a podcast. In late May she invited Tamela Blalock, MBA, CMP, DES (Executive Director of Section on Women's Health) and association executive Nabil El'Ghoroury (Associate Executive Director at the American Psychological Association (APA)) to join her to add more perspectives and topics to the conversation.
The format is about 1-hour long where we begin with 10 minutes of discussion on association news and then we bring in our esteemed industry expert to for an elevated and nuanced conversation about a key area that top association executives should be considering. We live stream over several platforms (Crowdcast, Periscope, Facebook Live, and YouTube live), and average anywhere between 20-200 live participants each week. There are often live questions from our online audience.

She has lived and worked abroad at the United Nations in Geneva and Chosun Newspaper in Seoul. She got her M.A. degree in Strategic Studies at SAIS, Johns Hopkins University and her B.A. at Boston University. To satisfy her love for entrepreneurship and creativity, she also sought out to be a StartingBloc Fellow and Mentor, Hive Fellow, Design Thinking in DC member, a Startup Weekend Organizer and Facilitator in DC. She is also in the process of being a certified coach and proud to be part of Coach Diversity Institute based on International Coach Federation standards.
Her love for interactive experience, safe space, and vulnerability reflects deeply in the curriculum she builds at InnovatorsBox. Her joy is to create 'aha' moments for the attendees because the best learnings comes by 'being in the moment.' She is a strong believer of 'learning by doing' and focuses on creating a safe space for deep inner search and discovery.
In her spare time, she loves to travel, read, paint, and teach Korean. You'll often see her with a chai latte and chocolate croissant at a cafe.

In business, when they say there is no “I in team” your eyes probably roll. But if you are the CEO, how do you make sure your senior leadership team is helping and not hurting your organization? And if you are part of that team, how do you keep an eye on improvement so that you can level up?
In this episode I ask Seth Kahan (CEO of Visionary Leadership) these questions and so many more...and he answers them. Some of his answers still have me thinking and I bet they will for you, too.
And, hey guys? Please like it, comment, and share on all the socials. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast or on YouTube and stay curious!

For this episode, I talked with the entertaining and enigmatic Chuck Fazio for the Association Chat episode, "Being Chuck Fazio - Photographer & Instigator, on Life, Art, and the Meetings Industry Fund."
A few questions we received for Chuck:
"How did you reinvent yourself (you weren't always a photographer, were you) and hone your craft? What were the top three lessons learned along the way?"
"Chuck has had and continues to have many successes in a variety of different worlds. How much of it was jumping in with both feet, and how much was from meticulous planning?"
"Professional: any lessons learned about hosting place-based education programs / study tours? Personal: if I am obsessed with taking amateur photos of food (and drinks) as a hobbyist, what's the best way to up my game?"

Remember atmosphere around the 2016 Presidential Election and the discussion happening in the association and non-profit realm at that time?
Where are we now?
This Association Chat with the CEO and Chair of American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) discussed leading in times of uncertainty.
No matter which administration is in office, we all have to find ways to work together. What that work looks like, how we conduct it, and all the related nuances can be challenging for any association leader. But what about when you're the leader of the association of associations?
For this Association Chat, we'll find out how the leaders of ASAE are anticipating and handling these challenges following a divisive US presidential election.
What are their challenges, what are they hearing from members and how are they communicating with them? And what do they see as they lead ASAE into a more complex future that likely includes increasing concerns regarding D+I and many other issues too?
This is a special Q&A you don't want to miss.
"As association leaders, we have a unique challenge and opportunity ahead of us. Associations have always made a difference, and our role has never been more important." - John Graham, CEO of ASAE

Strategic illiteracy is rampant – and is impacting your association right now. “That’s not how we do it!” is the battle cry of those dedicated to the past – rather than getting strategic about your future.
The louder the roar, the bigger the potential impact.
Leadership Strategist, Cynthia D’Amour, MBA is joining us to explore strategic illiteracy as a risk management issue for your association.
Recruitment and retention is a popular topic for articles because these issues can so often plague an association executive with doubt and worry. For this Association Chat, we're exploring how the focus has changed for association requests over the past few years, how research and social media play into recruitment and retention, and what executives really need to know to make sure they prioritize effectively in order to best meet their goals.
