Alissa LaChance is a 29-year-old female who grew up in the mountains in Whitefish, Montana. After starting to garden at the age of 16 she found her passion in the soil. After years of experience in farming, she found her true passion, COMPOST! That passion led her to co-found Dirt Rich Compost in 2015.

That's when she realized compost, soil biology, and food waste reduction was the direction she was being called towards instead of starting my own vegetable farm.

She has a degree in Environmental Studies and Sustainable Ag from the University of Montana with continuing education through Soil Food Web Inc. Alissa has learned staying engaged in an active lifestyle of mountaineering in Glacier National Park and rock climbing in the local area is necessary for keeping her soul fueled so she can keep give back to our community's soils and recycling systems.

Alicia Baker moved to Utah partially because of her love of the outdoors. She knew when she started adventuring into the mountains she wanted a four-legged friend to go with her. By fate and chance, she was connected with a golden retriever she named Charlie. The two have been adventure buddies since the day she brought him home.

Alicia created the website GirlonaHike.com to showcase places around Utah that are not only dog-friendly hikes but also off-leash dog-friendly hikes. Her website is a valued resource by many dog-loving adventurers, myself included.

Every time I look for a new place to bring our dogs, Alicia's website pops up as a resource. I asked Alicia to come on and talk about creating the website, adventuring with your dog, backpacking with your dog, and more. Basically, we geek out about our dogs during this conversation and talk about why some places she has chosen not to write about on her site. This and more on this week's episode.

He fell in love with obstacle course racing through participating in several events in the United Kingdom. In the last couple of years, he has expanded his practice to include coaching the mental game of several obstacle racing world champions.

On the podcast, we talk about the mental game of sport, how coaching can help you achieve your goals not just in sport but in life and business. Basically, we geek out on coaching and why having a coach is a good idea for everyone.

When not coaching Graham is a husband, father (which you hear on the episode), and avid obstacle racer who took on the 24-hour Spartan Ultra in Iceland last year.

Erin Rost shocked the obstacle racing community just over a week ago when she finished second at the 2018 World's Toughest Mudder. I reached out to Rost to find out more about this 27-year-old Air Force Captain.

In the conversation, we talk about attending the Air Force Academy, why jumping off a 37-foot-jump at World's Toughest Mudder was no big deal. We chat about both being goalies in college and the unique mindset it takes to play the position. As well we talk about World's Toughest Mudder itself, what this podium finish means to Rost and what she plans to do next in the obstacle course racing world.

It was an absolute pleasure to get to talk to Rost about her background, obstacle racing, and we bond a bit about living in Boston. Hope you enjoy the episode and be sure to check out the great companies that help keep this podcast going!

Gina Lucrezi’s roots stem from short distances on the track, but after a few wild jaunts on the trails, she was convinced to trade in her beloved speedy flat asphalt for rugged desolate mountain terrain. Off the trail, Gina has spent 10 years working in the outdoor industry with a focus in the marketing arena. Positions include Marketing Manager – Inov-8, Advertising Manager – Trail Runner magazine, Business Manager – iRunFar, and the Activation Specialist for Teams and Events – Julbo Eyewear, Ultimate Direction, and Vasque Footwear.

Rose Wetzel is back on the podcast! This time around we are talking about balancing motherhood and her career as a professional obstacle course racer. Rose has been a professional obstacle racer for years on the Spartan Pro Team, competed on American Ninja Warrior more than once, and is sponsored by some incredible companies.

Getting to chat with Rose is always a pleasure as she is honest, raw, and shares how she feels. We talked about why she choose to let the Spartan Up Podcast into her delivery room, changing poopy diapers, and how some setbacks during childbirth made her change some of her athletic goals and timelines. Finally, we touched on travel, racing, and parenthood. All that and more this episode.

If you missed Rose the first time on the podcast you can find her on Episode 25.

Tyler Tomasello has lived a couple lives in his time on this planet. At a young age, he was a professional snowboard competitor. After his competitive days were done he turned to Ultra Running and has competed in races around the world. A few years ago he picked up his camera and has been exploring the world of photojournalism ever since.

He has combined his love of nature, people, and the outdoors into his work. He often tells the stories of the people who are normally missed by mainstream media. Whether he is traveling to Miami to document a hurricane first hand or to Afghanistan to showcase female ultra runners. Tyler is constantly looking for the stories that not many are willing to tell.

He joins the podcast to talk about his experience in Afghanistan and how he went to tell the story of a group of local female ultra runners and ended up coaching the women. Tyler tells of a different Afghanistan, one which is normally missed in mainstream media.

Tyler's work recently took him to Sittwe, Rakhine, and Myanmar on another project then directly after that he headed to Bangladesh. In his words "heading to Cox's Bazar to document and tell the other side of the story." Tyler is constantly on the move and it was an honor and privilege to get to sit down with him and let him tell some of his story and the story of the women he worked with in Afghanistan.

Donna Cameron has spent her career working with nonprofit organizations and causes—as an executive, consultant, trainer, and volunteer. She has seen kindness in action and been awed by its power to transform.

When she committed to a year of living kindly she considered herself a reasonably nice person (with occasional lapses into bitchiness), but she knew that true kindness was a step above—and over the course of that year, she learned that it takes practice, patience, and understanding . . . not to mention a sense of humor. Out of her experience was born the book A Year of Living Kindly. We chat about the book, kindness and why it's needed more than ever these days.

The recipient of multiple writing awards, Cameron has published numerous articles and, in 2011, coauthored (with Kristen Leathers) One Hill, Many Voices: Stories of Hope and Healing. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Donna now lives in a suburb of Seattle with her husband.

Episode Extra:

For Patreon supporters, Donna has offered a free one-page “manifesto” describing 10 key elements of kindness just for supporters of the podcast. You can get access to this bonus and others by becoming a Patron today for as little as $1.00 a month. Get access to episodes early, giveaways, and bonuses like this one.

When Anne Champagne crossed the finish line at the Spartan Stoneham Ultra Beast she made history. Not only did Champagne win the race for women she beat all the men by over 45 minutes. I checked with Spartan HQ to confirm my suspicion that Anne was the first woman in the race company history to outright win an Ultra Beast. Spartan confirmed that she was the first women to ever accomplish this feat and that only one other time in the companies history had a woman outright won a Spartan of any distance but that race was not an Ultra Beast according to Spartan HQ.

Champagne joins the podcast to talk about the race, how she feels making Spartan history, and a little bit about her life, training and more. Champagne joined me via a Skype call from her home in Quebec, Canada to talk about it all just days after she won the race. Champagne has been an obstacle course racer for years and frequently finds herself on podiums in both Canada and the United States.

It all began in a small kitchen fueled by a mother’s love where the founder, Sue Kerber searched for something natural to relieve her son’s eczema. In early 2009, she turned her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for blending natural ingredients into what is today known as the Rad Soap Co.

From that point forward Sue and her family developed a unique and top secret proprietary process for creating their handcrafted batches of soap. The process includes suspending the soap in a glycerin state with botanicals and essential oils never being exposed to caustic sodas/lye therefore never altering the delicate state of those natural ingredients. To this day RAD's unique process of production has never been duplicated to their knowledge. RAD's products are crafted and ready for delivery within 24 hours thus delivering the freshest all-natural body care to our beloved consumers and wholesale partners.

A group of unexpected loyal customers got behind the family and their award-winning products from day one with the power of a grassroots movement which took on a life of its own. Rad was also accepted/requested into the world of the highly prestigious, trending and selective Korean Beauty/Skin Care market when they became one of the first and only American family-owned companies to sell their products in South Korea.

Today, The Rad Soap Co. is committed to being the consumers the most trusted source for natural body care products. RAD Soap adheres to strict quality standards due to the founder’s belief “If my family won’t use it, then we won’t sell it”. We believe in products with a purpose.

Erin Broadfoot the co-founder and co-owner of Little Beasts Brewing in Whitby, Ontario. A 10hL brewery that produces craft beer. They brew a variety of hoppy ales and saisons and pride themselves on consistency and quality. A strong understanding of microbiology and chemistry has really helped me in my brewing career.

This is a second career for Broadfoot, she was an ND that focused on gynecology and obstetrics previously. She began brewing professionally in 2014 and subsequently won a scholarship to Siebel Technical Institute for brewing which essentially sealed her future.

After working in the industry for a few years she decided to work for herself and opened up Little Beasts in October 2017 after two years of planning with her friend and business partner John Henley.

In her spare time, she spends as much time as possible with my husband and 3 children and is pretty involved in obstacle course racing. She trains at her local OCR gym and through Yancy Camp. She has become pretty obsessed with endurance OCR and runs a number of races yearly including a recent Toughest Mudder, an 8-hour overnight obstacle course race. In the podcast, we talk all about beer, the process, and opening a business.

Christian Griffith joins the podcast as our fourth male guest. He is currently on the road in Colorado running across the country on a mission called Run2Heal. He is changing the narratives around child sexual abuse running and speaking across the country. Christian is a survivor himself of child sexual abuse from both his mother and men.

During the episode, Christian goes into the staggering numbers of those that are sexually abused as children. I have known Christian since 2012 or 2013 as he was one of the co-founders of Obstacle Racing Media and we have traveled to various countries together for races. We have worked together on Fuego y Agua so when he wrote about his abuse I was shocked to find out this part of his story.

On the outside, he was what most would consider a total bro, but on the inside, his demons were eating him alive. He talks about all of this on the podcast. How mile after mile of his transatlantic run he is slowly reshaping his own story, helping reshape the conversation of child sexual abuse, and trying to make a better world for his newborn daughter to grow up in.

This is a powerful episode and might be a trigger for some people who have experienced abuse in their past. A huge thank you to Christian for opening up and being so honest about his journey, his story, and check out the links below to learn more about Run2Heal and his mission.

Leanne Vogel is back on the podcast this week! Leanne was last on the podcast (Episode 30) talking all about her book The Keto Diet, and Keto for women. Since recording with her she and her husband have moved out of their house and into a large RV. We caught up with her while she was in Ohio and about to head out on her second book tour.

In this episode, we chat about maintaining Keto for the long haul. Where fruit can fit into a keto diet, if at all. We chat about some of the challenges of staying in the Keto lifestyle while constantly on the road and traveling. Leanne also chats about why we need to all be a little softer on ourselves if we slip up. Actually, she says there is no falling off the wagon and talks about changing that mindset.

I ask her about sugar alcohols and other low glycemic sweeteners. Also what she sees for the future of Keto as it has become more popularized in the mainstream, on health podcasts and other media. It's an information packed episode.

Leanne is always one to speak her mind when it comes to health and nutrition. Her bestselling book The Keto Diet and popular podcast The Keto Diet Podcast offer realistic approaches for both men and women to maintain a balanced fat fueled diet.

It was a pleasure catching up with her for this episode. For Patreon supporters we have the whole video conversation available there as well as two PDF's - How to Start Keto and 5 Proven Ways to Stop Cravings and Carb Addition free for all our Patreon supporters. Sarah Faith Gottesdiener is a designer, artist, Tarot reader, teacher, and writer living in Los Angeles. For the last 6 years she has run her own business in a variety of different ways—by selling her feminist apparel, print, and accessory line called Modern Women, by teaching workshops on metaphysical subjects, by taking on design client work for companies and individuals, and by giving Intuitive Tarot readings for people all over the globe.

She is the creator of the instant cult classic Many Moons workbooks, co-designs and curates a queer and feminist design publication with her collaborator Nicole Kilian, and also co-hosts the Ideal Futures podcast with Gina Young. In her spare time, she likes hiking, reading, yoga, cooking, going to art galleries and museums, and binge-watching Queer Eye for the umpteenth time.

Sarah and I dive in on this episode into a number of topics and go into Sarah's introduction to Tarot, working with spirit guides, harnessing your own intuition. We spend a bunch of time walking about what Magik is and how it's all around us.

Caitlin Landesberg is the Founder & CEO of Sufferfest Beer Company, Inc. She started the company while on a quest to find the best beer in the world to address her needs after having a gluten intolerance. Caitlin founded Sufferfest Beer Company in 2016 after working with researchers and scientists to create a gluten-removed beer.

Sufferfest has quickly become an award-winning craft beer with the company located in San Francisco. Caitlin brought 13 years of marketing experience when she started the brand working with a variety of tech companies including Strava.

Prior to starting Sufferfest, Caitlin served as Director of Marketing at Strava, a social network for athletes. It was while working at Strava and running with other athletes that she thought of the idea for Sufferfest and wanted to create a better beer.

I have been able to try out Sufferfest Beer for myself and can solidly say it is just a great tasting beer. Having the gluten removed from the beer is a bonus. It has quickly become my favorite goto beer after an adventure or day working in the garden.

Emily Nagoski is the award-winning author of the New York Times bestseller, Come As You Are: the surprising new science that will transform your sex life. She began her work as a sex educator at the University of Delaware, where volunteered as a peer sex educator while she studied psychology with minors in cognitive science and philosophy.

She went on to earn an M.S. in Counseling and a Ph.D. in Health Behavior, both from Indiana University, with clinical and research training at the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction. After eight years working at Smith College, Emily is now working on her second book, about women's overall well-being. It's called Burnout.

Emily and I dive deep into her work on this episode talking about the dual-control model, what it is and what it means for your sex drive. We chat about what is arousal and why it can be different for all of us. Emily defines and dives into nonconcordance, and why your body and your brain are not always in alignment.

Of course, no talk with a sex researcher is complete without talking about the big "O" orgasm. She talks about why desire not pleasure is the measure. We finish out the podcast talking about her latest book she is working on called Burnout.

Episode 100 is here. Less than two years ago I began a new chapter of the Dirt in Your Skirt story with the addition of the podcast. It has been an incredible ride so far and wanted to take episode 100 as a chance to reflect back on the first 100 episodes even episode 0.

I invited Jojo Brown of the UK Mudd Queens Podcast to come on and chat about the first 99 episodes. Jojo and I will frequently chat about episodes after they are out and further the conversation. I thought what better way to commemorate this milestone than take those themes and weave them into a massive podcast episode.

When home she enjoys hiking all over the place with her dog (I’m obsessed with my dog) and she recently did Mountain Leader training. We recorded this podcast shortly after her return from her two-month solo bike trek.

Jax Mariash is a bit of a modern day wonder woman. She is an endurance stage racing world record holder in the 4-Desert Series, entrepreneur, founder of Stoked Coffee Roasters, and funny on top of it all.

Jax and I sat down in an office above one of her two coffee shops in Park City, Utah recently to talk about her running career and Stoked Coffee Roasters the coffee roasting and shop she founded. As we talked she was prepping for the Marathon des Sables multi-day stage race in Morocco, a race we talked about with 2013 women's winner Meghan Hicks on episode 14.

Jax talks about the rigors of being a business owner and professional athlete, how she balances the two worlds, and when she finds time to relax in all of it. It was a fun conversation with both of us jacked up on caffeine in the process.

Dr. Deb Butler utilizes a blend of brain science, nutrition, physiology, life coaching and life lessons, teaching REAL weight loss — lasting weight loss — starts from the inside out. Inside your BRAIN.

At 50 years old, when she started her latest round of dieting at Weight Watchers (so she could lose the same 30 pounds for the 100th time), she had one big NEW problem... the weight wasn’t coming off like it used to. She was depressed and not sleeping. Her doctor said, “Welcome to menopause.” She KNEW there had to be a better way.

Dr. Deb studied with Martha Beck and then with Brooke Castillo of the Life Coach School and became a certified Life Coach and Master Certified Life and Weight Coach. This not only helped with her weight issues but also her life issues. All of this while going through menopause. She now uses these tools in her own program based on her own experience.

She has stated menopause was the catalyst to not only stop the crazy dieting but also to connect her to her passion for working with people’s minds. This was what she was meant to do. Thanks to menopause she no longer diets and she is passionately coaching women through menopause and beyond.

Tod Brilliant had a vision while gardening. That vision was of a nicer world. So he set out to create The Super Nice Club, with one vision to make the world nicer. At least 10% nicer. In his own words:

"In short, I give a damn. About the world, its future, and my hopefully achievable goal of giving more from it than I take. To do this requires constant, never-ending learning, unlearning and relearning, all of which means that I often find myself taking hypocritical positions that contradict what I thought I knew. I work as a Creative Director and writer, live in California's wine country with a truly wonderful lemon tree, and work daily at spreading the simple premise of the Super Nice Club (be a little nicer)."

Tod joins the podcast this week to talk about creating the Super Nice Club, what it means to be Super Nice, and how we all can be a little nicer to one another, possibly changing the world in the process. Sounds like a lofty goal, but listen in to find out how the Super Nice Club is a grassroots organization making a difference in communities all over the United States and beyond.

Adriane Wilson was born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1980 to Rick and Rae Blewitt. She has one sister, Samantha, who is two years older than her. Adriane followed her sister around and participated in all the sports she tried; golf, softball, and track and field.

She lost her Dad right before my senior year of High School so life was a little uncertain as she matured into adulthood. However, she found her passion for track and field when she went to college at Ashland University and majored in Physical Education and Health. Her college coach was 4X Olympian, Jud Logan and he guided me to a life of dedication and perseverance. His daily lessons of excellence helped me achieve athletic success and victory over the biggest challenge of my life.

She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 23 in the peak of her athletic career. Her dream of making the US Olympic Team in 2004 was shattered. With the support of my family, coach, teammates, and the community she was able to compete and finish 5th in the shot put at the 2004 US Olympic Trials a couple months after chemotherapy.

She continued training for the '08 and '12 US Olympic Trials but never quite got back to the top. In the meantime, she began competing in the Scottish Highland Games for fun. This 'fun' turned into an amazing experience of traveling the world wearing a kilt, throwing stones and flipping trees, and earning World Champion titles along the way.

Now retired from competing in the shot put, she trains for the Highland Games and works as a personal trainer in two gyms in Columbia, South Carolina. Her passion has shifted towards coaching. For the last two year, she has been contracted to coach US soldiers who are wounded, ill, or injured in the shot put and discus for the Warrior Games and Invictus Games.

Sister Kate came to California after surviving a financially devastating divorce, and as a single mother of three children, found it impractical to continue her chosen career, as the amount of travel would have meant the children raised themselves. Instead, she looked to California’s most new and most interesting de-regulating market: the cannabis industry.

Sister Kate founded a non-profit cannabis collective in the Fall of 2009 and opened for business in 2010 (Caregrowers). After three years of serving local terminal patients, after developing teas and tinctures for the express reason of avoiding having the sick and dying risk torching themselves with fire and pipes, she decided to close that business and focused on developing a non-smokable product line that would reach more people. During the Harvest Moon of 2014, she developed her first line of products for the Sisters of the Valley. In January of 2015, she launched the business and the Sisters support themselves through the growing business of making and distributing CBD products.

Sister Kate has been called the "Weed Nun", "Cannabis Nun", and she and her order has been featured globally for their growing efforts and mission.

In light of CBD taking taken off the WADA banned list as of January 1, 2018, and at the same time current political and cultural movements on both ends, it seemed Sister Kate would be an interesting guest to talk about what CBD is and what it isn't.

Heather Shannon has followed a meandering and adventurous path to get to where she could serve as a charge nurse of a 28 bed ER in a mobile field hospital as part of a federal disaster medical assistance team in Puerto Rico after hurricanes Irma and Maria. She started her journey as an officer in the US Army and then was recruited into corporate America as a logistics supervisor. Neither spoke to her true calling so after a master’s degree in organizational leadership; she spent seven years following her passion traveling the Western Hemisphere working as a mountain guide, outdoor educator, wilderness medicine instructor, and ski patroller all the while living out of a pickup truck. Things came together during this time, and while on the side of a mountain doing CPR, she knew nursing was her path. She got her RN license, paramedic license, a master’s degree in critical care/trauma nursing and cut her teeth in the trauma surgical ICU at San Francisco General Hospital. Fast forward 10 years and now she works full time in Northern California as a flight nurse on a helicopter.

Heather also trains for ultra-endurance races, running the trails with her dogs or doing yard work on her property in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Her recent noteworthy races include Survival Run Canada, finishes at Broken Arrow Skyrace 52K, TPK2, and a podium finish (first place woman) at TPK Endurance in 2016.

Kristin Saad is one of those athletes who found obstacle racing by "accident". She has a long athletic history, including running Division 1 for Miami University. After college, she became competitive in triathlons while working full-time in medical and pharmaceutical sales.

In 2010, she met my husband and 18 months later we were married. Just settling in married life a month after their wedding she found out she was pregnant. With twins! As she says, "I guess you could say I tend to do things quickly, competitively ...maybe even aggressively."

Twin pregnancy threw her body and mind for a loop. She spent over two months on bed rest, and another 3 months after recovering and sleep deprived before she took a step running! Her body had changed a lot, and she soon after found a trainer to help strengthen some weaknesses in her hamstrings. This is where she was sneakily introduced to OCR.

Prior to having kids, she spent all my time running, swimming or biking, with very little time in the weight room. Looking back, it's probably why she suffered almost every "running" injury known to man. Her trainer suggested she do the local Chicago Spartan Race.

He said she would do well. Saad looked at the website and said "no way I would be running through mud and carrying a bucket. And then I signed up."

She loved competition too much and it had been way too long since she had raced. Her first Spartan Race "kicked my ass." 125 burpees later she finished 3rd and was hooked.

Last year (2016) was her first season. Her 3rd race ever was the NBC Spartan Race Montana Sprint where she finished 5th place and spent whole race with a cameraman yelling "what's your name?"

Saad joins the podcast this week to talk about her current journey in life balancing twins, charity work, a family, and competing at a professional level. This one is unique as while we all might not be professional athletes finding the time to fit in everything in a day is a universal among so many women, especially mothers!

Chinon Maria, the artist behind Maven Murals, was born and raised on the ski slopes of Vermont. It was in her childhood home where she first began cultivating her creative path secretly drawing and painting on the walls of her home. Chinon attended the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art in France, undergraduate programs through the Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a BFA from Montana State University where she was captain of NCAA DI Alpine Ski Team.

Chinon Maria's Colombian roots have greatly impacted her use of a vibrant colorful palette utilizing traditional indigenous patterns while her lifelong influences include the golden age of illustration, drag queens, urban street art, Victorian textile design and the fashion industry.

Her personal work depicts many faces of "dolls" both beautiful, alluring and innocent, while all seemingly to be slightly questioning their role in society. Today, she splits her time between New York and Europe. She likes to skip, wear big bows, and sometimes red lipstick. Her theme song is Killer Queen by QUEEN.

Nicole Mericle started racing obstacle course races last May. Over the past weekend, she notched a new achievement in her short OCR career with a win at the Spartan Race U.S. Championship Series in California. Prior to that her best performances were probably at Monterey Spartan Race 2016, 2 wins at Savage Race and then a second at OCR World Championships. So far this year she has placed 2nd at the Spartan Race San Jose Super and 3rd at the Seattle Super.

Her background is in running and rock climbing. She ran for Rice University and was a 10:07 steeplechaser, 4:25 1500m (4:45 mile) runner there. Injuries from running after college pushed me to start rock climbing. I've climbed routes rated 5.12c and V7. We talk about these on the episode.

A typical week would be maybe 50-60 miles running and climbing 3-6 times a week depending on time. She works as an EMT and doing post-baccalaureate classes in order to apply to Physicians Assistant school.

After a hip injury sidelined me from track and road racing for almost 3 years, she found trail running helped in the recovery process. On the episode, she talks about how she made fun of OCR runners 1 month before I tried it. A friend opened her eyes to the competitive side of OCR and convinced me to try it out.

Elated to be healthy and back in competition mode, she went from not being able to run more than 3 miles in March last year (due to hip injury) to racing all summer. She is still building back from my running hiatus, figuring this sport out and enjoying racing again, but as a highly competitive person she does have her sights set on winning Spartan World Championships and OCR World Championships this year.

She hopes to inspire people to get outside, advocate for environmental stewardship and help others improve their health through exercise and nutrition.

In road triathlons, she found immediate success and in my first race qualified for the ITU Long Course World Championships as a member of Team USA. Due to

Due to expenses she was unable to race at the second ITU World Championships she qualified for in 2010. After second place finishes at the 2009 and 2010 Halfmax 70.3 National Championship races, she endeavored to race my first Ironman triathlon. I attained that goal in 2011 at Ironman Coeur D’Alene. After IMCDA, my husband and I moved to Salt Lake City, UT. In 2012 I found myself injured with a stress fracture in my femoral neck. Recurrent injuries kept me from significant amounts of racing until 2014 when I felt ready to begin again. Since that time I have participated in XTerra with some success and have found that my favorite racing disciplines are mountain biking, fat biking, and trail running. I won my first national championships in fat biking in 2016. Other highlights for 2016 include a second place age group finish at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships and an age group win at the Park City Point 2 Point (Park City, UT). In 2017 I won the Pro/Open Fat Bike National Championships and upgraded to pro on the mountain bike. In 2017/18 I intend to race the High Cascades 100 and the Park City Point 2 Point as well as local and regional races on the snow and dirt. Allison Tai is many things, a mother, obstacle racer, coach, ultra runner, world record holder, and wife to name a few. Allison makes a mark wherever she finds herself. She is the mother of two young girls, won the Spartan Race Ultra Beast in 2016 (the weekend after a UB win in Sun Peaks), top of Spartan Canadian Point Series in 2015, second place at WTM in 2014. World record holder for fastest female marathon pushing a stroller in 2013.

But in 2006 the only thing on her mind was feeding and bathing herself without assistance after being hit by a truck at highway speed on a bicycle. From that accident, she suffered from a broke back, arm, and pelvis and additional nerve damage. The doctors initially told her that she probably wouldn't be running long distances for a while.

However, Allison took the injury in stride and recovered to run an ultra marathon less than a year after the accident. Since that time Allison has become a dominant female in the sport of obstacle racing and beyond. On the podcast this week we talk about her injury, recovery, obstacle racing, and how she breastfed her daughter during World's Toughest Mudder in 2014 and still finished second for women that year. All that and more this week with Allison Tai.

Erica Ness and her husband first bonded over their love of tiny homes. In 2012 and 2013 they built and moved into their own tiny home. In reality, tiny home living is much more complex than what we see online in the fancy photos or on the television shows.

Erica brings to this podcast her practical knowledge gained from living in 280 square feet of living space with a husband and a large dog. She talks about the process of designing, building, and living in their tiny home.

Erica is a self-proclaimed packrat and she and her husband are both avid outdoors people. Learn on the show how to manage a lot of gear in a small space and why Erica says to not just get rid of everything at once when you move into a tiny space, which is different from many of the shows you see on television.

She talks about moving their house from Northwestern Montana to Northwestern Washington over the Cascade range. As well as moving the house in Montana and a funny story about why you should make sure your doors are always properly latched in a tiny home.

On a side note, Erica is my youngest sister and joined the podcast from her neighbor's house. If you ever wanted to learn about how to live more simply take a note from my youngest sister and her husband.

She hosts the Living Unconventionally podcast where she interviews people who’ve ditched their traditional life to chase their passions around the world and she hopes to inspire others to live a life that truly fulfills them.

Britany answers a few of my questions on how to get started on your own journey. She also gives us information she has gleaned from over 100 interviews with people who have gotten off the 9-5 track and now find themselves living unconventionally. Mandy Baskin found her love for Hot Air Balloons after a disappointing date. One ride would drastically change the direction of her life. She is the founder and owner of Monticello Country Ballooning, mother of one, and is the only woman to have competed in all six years of World's Toughest Mudder -24-hourr obstacle race.

Baskin joins the podcast this week to talk about being a female Hot Air Balloon pilot and how she is one of the very few women in the industry. We chat about how one becomes a Hot Air Balloon Pilot, the process and how she went from working in the restaurant industry to becoming a pilot.

We chat about how it feels to be up in the air in one of the original forms of flying and I ask how the industry has changed in the last couple hundred years and what has remained the same. Mandy talks about the challenges as a small business owner in her industry and what it was like to first go to safety conventions being one of the only females in the room.

She chats about being a single mother and how her daughter already wants to work for her mother and currently helps out as a chaser for the balloon. We dive into her other job as a nurse and she gives advice on how NOT to do nursing school.

Finally, we round out the episode talking about her six years at World's Toughest Mudder and what she has learned from each year of racing. Baskin continues to be one of the quiet competitors each year at the race. She shares her wisdom and advice for those interested in trying World's Toughest Mudder.

Stefanie Bishop always grew up active from the time she could crawl. She competed in a number of different sports growing up, but it wasn't until 2009 when she read a New York Times article that would really spark something new in her life.

That New York Times article was about the Death Race. In this week's episode of the podcast, Bishop talks about growing up, being recruited to gymnastics from a birthday party, how winning the Death Race turned into a job in finance, and more. She talks about why she prefers adventure racing and other extreme endurance events to short distance courses. Finally, talks about the importance of community in long events.

Bishop recently won the 2016 World's Toughest Mudder and to many this was their first introduction to the endurance athlete. In our podcast, she talks about how she got into the obstacle racing world in 2010 then took a break for a few years but always had WTM on her radar.

Check out this week's episode, coming out on Bishop's 34th birthday!
