This week we talk with Javier Pachón, the president of CineCiutat, an arthouse theatre founded and ran collectively in Palma de Mallorca in Spain. CineCiutat shouldn't exist. 8 years ago the last theatre in the island dedicated to arthouse cinema closed its doors, due to the belief that there wasn't a market for such a place in a small city. However the people from Mallorca disagreed and instead created CineCiutat, which became a non-profit and participative project for art-house films, committed to social and environmental action and to the support of local talent and culture. It also became a meeting point for the community. We talked with Javier about the foundation of this project and about the impacts the health crisis has had in his cinema and in theatres in Spain. We also talked about the very successful crowdfunding campaign he's running to help fund repairs and improvements to the cinema, and which has so far, raised more than 70 thousand euros.
In this episode we are delighted to talk with Dr. Skadi Loist, a Visiting Professor for Production Cultures in Audiovisual Media Industries at the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in Potsdam, Germany. Skadi is cofounder of the Film Festival Research Network (FFRN), a Steering Committee member of the European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS), Head of Research for the European Women’s Audiovisual network (EWA) and a former board member of QueerScope e.V., the association of Independent German Queer Film Festivals. Skadi’s main research areas are global film circulation, film festivals, gender equality and diversity in screen industries, and queer cinema.
Cinemas worldwide are currently fighting for their existence due to the new coronavirus outbreak. In this episode we talk with Ivo Andrle, who has since 1999 co-managed Aero Kino, a cult movie theatre in Prague in the Czech Republic. He's also the co-founder and CEO of Aerofilms, a leading arthouse distribution company in the Czech territory. Ivo also has a very special approach when it comes to new ways of reaching audiences, so Anna Huth and Lisa Plumeier met him during the Berlinale to find out more about his innovative strategies and the daily challenges exhibitors face, even before the health crisis forced theatres to close down.
For this week's episode we take you back to January when we had the chance to talk with filmmakers Hannah Jayanti and Alexander Porter at International Film Festival Rotterdam, where they premiered in the Bright future competition, their speculative documentary: Truth or Consequences. The film is a lyrical meditation on progress, history, and how we navigate a sense of loss within ourselves and within a changing world.
Earlier in February, we met with Dr Angus Finney during the Berlin International Film Festival, the Berlinale. Finney is a leading international film and creative industry specialist who has published a number of books and has managed, taught, mentored and lectured across the world. He's a research fellow at the University of Cambridge, and was in Berlin for the market as Executive Producer at Yash Raj Films. During a talk with Next Wave's Emma Caviezel and Magda Rotko, Finney discussed this year's edition of the EFM, Brexit and modern challenges the film industry is facing. The Berlinale is traditionally one of the first major film events of the year, and this year due to the coronavirus crisis, it might be one of the only few that managed to take place in its traditional form, as we now watch many festivals switch to new online formats for this year's editions.
