In this week's episode, we explore Mike Zenker's journey of growing up while being physically and verbally abused at home and sexually abused by a church clergy to becoming a Pastor and Chaplain, teaching what it really means to forgive.
Mike Zenker grew up in a German Baptist home in Southern Ontario. His parents were strict and enforced corporal punishment as a means to instill acceptable behaviour. The relationship with his
mother was a very difficult one as she played the ‘nice person’ in public, but behind the closed doors at home, she was extremely angry, physically violent and verbally abusive to her family. This led to Mike eagerly getting a newspaper route where he didn’t need to be at home as much. One of the Priests at a local Catholic Church on his route befriended Mike where things only continued to spiral downhill. The sexual abuse that followed lasted three years.
Years later Mike became a Minister and found a calling in ‘helping others discover faith’. Fast-forwarding to age 45, Mike was forced to face his emotional demons and began a three-year process of counselling and filing a lawsuit against the Catholic church for their part in not protecting the community from a known abuser.
Today, Mike has learned much from the journey of self-discovery and the journey of what it means to really forgive the pain from the past. His story is filled with roadblocks, forced storms to walk through, and finally, what were thought to be ashes of pain from the past, have now become the fertilizer for a more ‘hope-filled’ perspective of the future.

In today's episode, we explore the journey Gabe Bronner who went from dealing with chronic GI pain, fatigue, and mental health issues to finally finding health and balance. If you'd like to reach out to Gabe, you can email him at gabrielbkroom@gmail.com "Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disease that occurs in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide. Two and one-half million Americans are undiagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications. When people with celiac disease eat gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley), their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine. These attacks lead to damage on the villi, small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine, that promote nutrient absorption. When the villi get damaged, nutrients cannot be absorbed properly into the body. Celiac disease is hereditary, meaning that it runs in families. People with a first-degree relative with celiac disease (parent, child, sibling) have a 1 in 10 risk of developing celiac disease. Celiac disease can develop at any age after people start eating foods or medicines that contain gluten. Left untreated, celiac disease can lead to additional serious health problems." - https://celiac.org/about-celiac-disease/what-is-celiac-disease/ -- This podcast is brought to you by SORD Academy. He was referred to as a 'vegetable'.
Jacob Haendel, a talented 28-year-old chef from the affluent suburbs of Boston, developed stage 4 toxic acute progressive leukoencephalopathy (TAPL) from smoking heroin. TAPL is a fatal disease that damages your brain's white matter - cells that make a substance called myelin. This protects your nerves and losing it can make it harder for you to move, think, and feel sensations. Within a month he could no longer walk. Within 4 months he could no longer eat. Within seven months, he was locked-in: a comatose state you are conscious through. He is the only documented case to recover from this disease and is here to share his experiences.
