In this episode, Dr. Aja and Cedric Weatherspoon delve into the complex narrative surrounding the murder of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur. They begin by discussing the recent arrest of Keffe D, the uncle of Orlando Anderson, a key figure in the events leading to Tupac's murder. This arrest, which comes decades after the crime, raises questions about why it took so long for authorities to make a move. Cedric raises concerns about the legal basis for charging Keefe D, as he didn't pull the trigger but is being held on conspiracy charges.

The hosts also examine the deeper context of Tupac's life and the evolution of hip-hop during that era. They explore how Tupac, born to parents involved in the Black Panther Party, initially had no gang affiliations and was a talented actor, rapper, and producer. However, his association with Death Row Records and its co-founder, Suge Knight, led him down a different path. They discuss how Tupac's artistic trajectory shifted dramatically after joining Death Row, culminating in a feud with Notorious B.I.G. and East Coast-West Coast tensions.

The conversation touches on the blurred lines between hip-hop culture and gang life during this period and the broader impact of this narrative on the portrayal of Black men and violence in media. Dr. Aja emphasizes the importance of discernment and critical thinking when consuming narratives in the media. The hosts ultimately reflect on the tragedy of Tupac's untimely death and the consequences of his associations, highlighting the need to remember him as a rapper and a multifaceted artist whose life was tragically cut short.

Aja and Cedric dive headfirst into the explosive departure of football icon Deion Sanders from Jackson State University to the University of Colorado. They kick off the discussion with Deion's shocking move, dissecting Dr. Greg Carr's incisive comments on respectability politics and the immense pressure Black individuals face to conform. The fashion police make an appearance as Jay Norvell's criticism of Deion's attire and demeanor gets scrutinized, alongside a heated showdown of coaching records between Deion and Jay Norvell.

The podcast then delves into the lasting impact of Deion Sanders on HBCU athletics, with Aja passionately defending his transformative influence. The controversy surrounding his decision to leave an HBCU for a predominantly white institution sparks a fiery debate. Shifting gears, they address the dire financial challenges HBCUs face and their desperate need for additional resources, shining a spotlight on the Magic City Classic and its significance in Birmingham, Alabama.

Loyalty takes center stage as they explore whether Deion was disloyal to Jackson State, with Cedric offering a compelling perspective on how this move might be a golden opportunity for HBCUs to ascend. The episode concludes with a call to action, stressing the importance of HBCUs positioning themselves for long-term success and the role of NFL alumni, government funding, and the Black community's support in achieving that goal.

This podcast episode doesn't pull any punches, delivering a raw and unapologetic take on the Deion Sanders saga, the struggles faced by HBCUs, and the roadmap for the future. Strap in for a no-holds-barred discussion that leaves no stone unturned.

“You can’t be out here lookin’ like a raggedy mango seed!” These are the fine words we remember from dads. One of the simplest yet favored ways of honoring a deceased father is to carry on with their crazy sayings.

We put little thought into the loss of a parent until we’re forced to think about it. But we don’t really grow up until we are no longer someone else’s kid.

Aja and Ced talk about honoring thy father.

Be a real man! But who the hell knows what that means anymore without saying, “show zero emotion.” Maybe “suck it up” or “walk it off” or “no tears” isn’t the best approach. Masculinity is taught, but where does “be a man” go wrong?

Ced and Aja talk about how we reshape the term masculinity to include being open about how you feel.

Where do men learn to be leaders? Teachers, coaches, their fathers, friends, and pastors. And can you be a leader while leaving the legacy of your name behind?

There are myriad leadership styles and no specific way to approach them. "Leadership for men has to be an independent journey and not one that is marked by traditional culture," says Dr. Aja King.

In June, we spotlight men in their role as a father and a leader. How have things changed for the better or, the worse?

The days of stereotypical dads cleaning their grill while offending fashionistas everywhere in their cargo shorts and lacking pedicured feet are gone. The modern dad doesn't need to showcase the anti-emotional side on all fronts.

This father's day, stray away from the cliche and treat dad to a gift he'd never request. Aja and Ced talk about gift-giving for fathers, the real stuff,  not the dumb tie.

Debra doesn't claim to be reading a crystal ball telling you how your life will go; she shares concepts of astrology, an outline of the elements squashed together, making you the person you are today. Now that you know, what are you going to do?

Step one: don’t be a jackass. Step two: make a plan.

The rules change a bit when dating a single mother. Ced gets the info from Aja when it comes to the dating game, “mom style.” While Aja provides some sound advice, Ced seems more concerned with who gets fed at the dinner table first. It’s one thing to consider how the kids will react, but it’s good to know what the ex in the picture will do.

If you feel like you’re give, give, giving all the time, you’re not alone. A common distraction to a mother’s sanity is the constant sacrifice for ALL surrounding her. Is a little peace of mind as simple as scheduling some time to take a little for yourself...or a lot?

Ced pries into the Top-5 ways Aja recommends to keep a mother’s mind at ease.

I’m gonna correct you, but I’m gonna correct you with love.” Doc talks with Ced about the less obvious narrative in the Will, Jada, and Chris Rock incident. Love is not violent, but love is accountability. When does interference cross the line, and when is your job as a spouse/partner to step in?

“The hardest love is watching people you love make bad decisions.”
