Welcome to The Root of It Podcast! We are Malia and Bianca and we are proud Pacific Islanders. We’ve created this podcast for our Islander community and hope to open the conversation that’ll help us get to the root of why we do what we do in the context of faith, family and culture. Be warned, high volumes of Islander girl laughter involved… Come join the convo!
In this episode, Malia and Bianca speak to their Micronesian guest (Marshallese/Puerto Rican), Jasmine Henry, about mixed and blended families, NAMES and family status, churches in the islands, law & business and the effects of colourism she experienced growing up due to her ethnic heritage. At the young age of 25, Jasmine is an Assistant Attorney General at the Office of the Attorney General in the District Attorney Office of Marshal Islands as well entrepreneur of brand label Lazy Jays and the soon to open, Lazy Jays Cafe. You get to hear her heart for her people and the next generation of Marshallese peoples in the practical and innovative ways she is embellishing the narrative of the term “going home and giving back”. Be inspired and get ready to dream and create change with us!
In this episode, Malia and Bianca wanted to have the conversation about something that is a real issue amongst our three enthnogeographic groupings in the Pacific Islands. To some, it’s a heavy topic and close to home. To others, it will be a new insight. These girls aren’t ignorant to the colourism and the exclusivity of our interactions at times as people groups. As young Melanesian and Polynesian women, they wanted to have a chat about how they have navigated these issues with as much laughter, honesty, confession and love as possible. They talk unity, avoiding the sun, colourism, inclusivity, the term “plastic” and so much more! So buckle up and be prepared to extend that table at the end of this one!
For their first visual episode over Zoom, Malia and Bianca interview their first guests: Aaron, Jeremiah, Rawling and Sione from The Uso Table Talk Podcast. They talk their favourite island food, family dynamics and go there with the “authority figures” conversation. Yes... you'll have plenty to laugh along with with and an equal amount to nod in agreement with as the guys drop some of pearls of wisdom throughout this episode. From Islander Parents to Pastors, they spur on the hard and sometimes awkward reality of how influential our authority figures are concerning our purpose, direction and choices in life. We can all relate in some way so this is a big convo you don't want to miss - come hear their stories!
In this episode, Malia and Bianca have a chat about the importance of having and knowing our purpose. Living with purpose allows us to constantly see the depths of who we are; where we come from; why we’re here; what we can do; and where are we going. You don’t want to miss this convo!
In this episode Malia and Bianca talk about their experiences of learning how to communicate in two different societies. As Pacific Islanders, we understand that how we communicate inside our own homes is different to how we communicate outside of them - especially when we grow up away from the motherland. As believers, we have the responsibility to honour God with how we communicate with each other and with everyone else. So come join the convo; it's one that can help us all!
Welcome to the first episode of The Root of It Podcast!
