Personally, the whole “new year, new me” movement totally stresses me out and I often find it does more harm than good.
Although starting the 2023 with big new goals may be helpful for some people, I want to share what I’ve found more helpful for myself and some of the dancers (and non-dancers) I’ve worked with!
Competitive Irish Dance can be a WILD ride! Here are some of the things I would tell my younger self when it comes to competition!
The other night I came home from a day full of clients and meetings and then I was up late answering emails and client messages…and when I finally finished for the day I said to my boyfriend, “I don’t feel like I’m doing enough.”
Which in retrospect this is kind of ridiculous…I crushed my to do, but also added to my to-do list as I went so in reality I was setting myself up for failure. There was no way I was going to complete every single task on a growing to-do list.
And I know I’m not the only one who has felt this way before…where it’s like no matter how much you do, it still doesn’t feel like you’re doing “enough.”
In this episode, we're diving into why this happens and how to let go of this mindset!
We often talk about the physical side of injuries, but we don't talk quite as much about the mental challenges of getting injured and going through the recovery process. In this episode, sports and performance psychologist Bill Reid breaks down some of the dancers' biggest fears around injuries and how to start working through them.
Bill is co-founder of Persistence Psych, which offers psychology services for elite performers to help them reach their full potential!

We are in full-blown Oireachtas season and this time of year there are dancers who are super excited, celebrating their success…and others who are extremely frustrated because they worked their butt off, put in so much time and energy, and still didn’t get the placement they wanted.
It’s easy to talk about success and how great it feels to work hard and then see results pay off. If you watch my IG stories or other dance IGs during this time of year, you see dancers celebrating their successes with their trophies, sashes, etc.
BUT what we don’t show or talk about quite as much is how much it sucks when you work your absolute hardest, dedicate time and energy to your dancing, and then don’t get the placement you want.
That’s why today I want to talk about how to work through the feeling of working your hardest, improving a ton, going into competition day feeling confident, and still not getting what you want…because it happens ALL OF THE TIME.
Let’s get into why this happens and what you can do about it!
Getting the same comment all of the time even when you feel like you ARE doing it correctly? Watch your dance videos and realize you are dancing way differently than you thought?! This episode is for you!
The Oireachtas is almost here! Here are 4 things that will help you gain a competitive advantage at the Oireachtas...that most dancers miss!
You practice, train, and do everything you can to prepare for competition day. Competition day finally comes, and you start to FREAK OUT!
Did you do enough?
Should you have practiced even more?
Will you suddenly forget your steps on stage?
If this sounds like you or you just want to maximize your performance on competition day, this episode is for you!
Scott Doherty is a U.S.-based Irish Dance World Champion originally from Boston, Massachusetts. Scott was trained by the world-renowned Rita O’Shea, her daughter Lisa Chaplin, and the amazing team of teachers at the O’Shea-Chaplin Academy of Irish Dance. Scott’s story is unique - going from one of the last competitors in his age group to Senior Men’s World Champion in less than 5 years. He considers himself lucky that his hard work paid off and led to success in competitions as well as touring the world with many shows including Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. More recently, Scott started his own production company creating shows such as Rockin’ Road to Dublin, Christmas in Killarney, and many more to come!
Award winning dance coach and sports psychologist Dr. Chelsea is in the house giving you the down low on how to level up your confidence walking into competition day! This episode is great for dancers, parents, and dance teachers!

Today we’re talking about stage presence. There are lots of people in your competition. The judges have a LONG day of watching the dancing. In the midwest, we have competitions of over 100 people. That’s a crap ton of hornpipes. I’m someone who could literally watch dancing all day and still be obsessed, and I start getting antsy at the end of a hardshoe or set round One of the best things you can do is walk on stage and make the judges feel excited to watch you and with an heir of confidence that you’ve already achieved your goal.
So I’m going to break down 5 ways you improve your stage presence and then at the end, I’m going to answer a few of the questions you guys had about stage presence on IG.

I first met Mikaela at Nationals this year and we started talking about dancing. As a dance trainer, at some point in our conversation, I asked if she’s had any injuries. Before I know it I’m deep in this amazing emotional and inspiring story about how Mikaela went from paralyzed with a 10% chance of ever walking again…to dancing on the Oireacthas stage THAT SAME YEAR!

Last week, I went on IG and asked you guys what you've always wanted to ask an adjudicator...then I took all of your questions and asked Laura!
Laura Hopper co-owns and coaches at Rising Tide, and it's no surprise that she loves Irish dance and loves sharing it with others. But beyond her passion for the sport, her job as a coach and adjudicator is to stretch each student to reach their full potential in a way that is challenging and fun. For her, the most exciting part about teaching is determining what’s possible for each of our students and then working to achieve those goals.
Laura grew up in Toronto (Canada), and has over 20 years of training in both Irish dance and ballet, and has been lucky enough to compete at the Eastern Canadian Oireachtas, North American Championships and World Championships throughout her dance career. Her teaching style is grounded in technique and supported by a strong understanding of goal setting, feedback, and motivation.
As the first Adjudicator (ADCRG) in Atlantic Canada, and past World Irish Dance Championship competitor, she understands the dedication required of Irish dancers. She offers Rising Tide dancers (and the dancers she adjudicates) a trained eye, clear feedback, passion, energy, enthusiasm (and a bit of silliness) as they work towards their goals.
Laura offers a TON of valuable information in this episode so guys don't want to miss this one!
If you are a dancer who is in the process of coming back from an injury, this episode is for you! There is a ton of information about preventing injuries, healing from injuries, and the physical side of injures…but let’s be real, being injured as a dancer and coming back from an injury is super mentally taxing as well.
It can feel really frustrating and lonely at times. But the truth is, you’re not alone.
That’s why I’m bringing on the dancer and Feis Fit Athlete Colleen to talk her own journey coming back from an achilles rupture, what she learned about herself, and advice she would give to dancers going through their own injuries.
As always, please make sure to rate and review if you like the podcast so I can continue to create more episodes for you!
When it comes to stamina, it involves both physical and mental components. Want to take your stamina to the next level? You don’t want to miss this episode!

Today we’re going to be getting into goal setting and how to effectively set goals in a subjective sport with Feis Fit Athlete, Kiera Duggan! I brought Kiera on today to talk about this with me because she’s had a ton of experience in the competitive world of Irish dance and not only that, but she has come a long way in improving her mindset around competition in dancing.

Being a dance parent can be tough! In this episode, I’m bringing on special guests, social and emotional learning experts (and parents), Marie Weller and Paula Vertikoff, to discuss how parents can best support their children in competitive sports, how to help kids stay motivated and focused, and how to deal with competition anxiety.
Marie and Paula have been featured on NPR, Fox 5 NYC, are curriculum contributors to Ball State’s Teacher’s College, and have a growing youtube channel that teaches kids (and parents) about growing healthy social and emotional skills.

One day we are feeling nervous that Worlds is coming up, the next we wonder if it's even going to be happening this year. This whole feeling of uncertainty can feel really uncomfortable. That's why on today's podcast, I want to talk about how to handle feelings of uncertainty. Can't wait to chat dance friends! ❤️

You ever use the phrase "I'm so busy!"
Yep, I feel you my friend! As dancers we have to juggle a lot of different priorities. Not only do we have the normal human stuff like going to school or work, family, friends, errands/laundry/etc...we also have a pretty demanding spart (the new name I decided on just now to use for art forms that are sports), to fit in.
And if you're anything like me, if you don't have your day organized, it can feel like you are constantly just running from one thing to the next.
That's why I've started to take time to plan out my days in a very specific way. This was has helped me overcome the challenge of having to juggle work, dance, family, friends, spirituality, etc. and hopefully it will help you too! ❤️
Check it out and make sure to leave me a 5-star review if you like it! Oh and don't forget to take a screenshot and share this with your friends on IG.
