This was a closer than expected fight with two sets of equally matched players and some of the best quizzers we have seen on the series so far. We are finally out of the labyrinth of the Quarter Finals and are down to the final four teams of this season of University Challenge. St Johns put up a brave fight and kept on coming back fighting, but this time Reading won out. However, the sportsmanship of Hutchinson was not lost on us. Don't let the low score fool you, this was an intense game of University Challenge made all the more challenging by the truly brutal questions asked this time around! Both teams have done so well, but alas we have to say goodbye to King's London as Emmanuel has secured a place in the semi-finals with the literal skin of their teeth. There you have it, another team has been knocked out of the quarter-finals of University Challenge. Trinity were strong, but in this high-stakes Cambridge derby, it was St John's that came out on top. How the teams performed, as well as musing on Japanese Prints, the romance of shipwrecks and how 1981 and 1982 were very interesting years.
The end of the quarter-finals is in sight as Edinburgh join Imperial in the Semifinals. Despite several lost points and a concerted effort from the Emmanuel team, the last Scottish University in the competition clinched it at the very last. Phew, what an episode that one was! There can be no doubt that Imperial are one of, if not THE team to beat this season as they go from strength to strength, being the team that finally made Reading's Hutchinson stumble! Now we're in the high-stakes part of the quarter-finals. No more second chances, you win or you are out of here! This was another match where one team (or should we say one person) truly dominated proceedings. Such a show of individual brilliance is rare even in University Challenge but it is one reason why so many of us love the show. After a few intense games that have had us on the edges of our seats, it was quite the change to see such a dominant display from the Trinity team. No doubt this is the team to watch alongside the Edinburgh lot. Also, we would pay an ungodly sum of money to see a Tim Burton directed Wallace and Gromit!
Another closely fought match! This week sees Edinburgh v Bristol, two very equally-matched and balanced teams, and another final few minutes spent on the edge of our seats. Two Cambridge colleges faced off in this episode and was it a close one! We're now in the second round of episodes of University Challenge, and starting things off we have the ever-entertaining St Johns matched up against Queen Mary, who we last saw square up against Oxford Brookes. Needless to say, there was a great deal to talk about this time, and not just about team performances.

There you have it, we have our last sixteen teams for the second round of University Challenge! Sad as it is to say goodby to the last specialist institution of this season with RNCM losing out to Emmanuel College, they put up an incredible fight and have left a lasting impression on the competition with their upbeat attitudes and radiant personalities. Meanwhile, Emmanuel have shown that they have more to prove and we shall see them again soon enough!

Well, that was a first, wasn't it? We probably won't have another dabbing contestant on University Challenge for quite some time, but it certainly ruffled some feathers online. Tom, however, feels otherwise. We also talk about ancient video games and the potential of Paxman shadow puppets.
We have our first conservatoire taking part in the competition with RNCM taking on Dundee University. Except for Courtauld's magnificent run two seasons ago, we haven't seen too many specialised institutions make it past the first round. However, RNCM excellent display despite Dundee's brilliant performance means that they could get a second chance.
We also talk about Paxman's extra levels of shade, the nature of the British Royal Family, and how Harry Potter is older than you think it is...
Our first Oxford Cambridge grudge match of the season and it did not disappoint! We saw a very spirited St Catharine side go through to the second round, and there is a chance for University College to get a second chance, which they certainly deserve.
Note, there is, unfortunately, a few audio bugs in the episode that we could not iron out, apologies for that! Hopefully, the gremlins are expunged next week.
Oh, what a corker of an episode that one was! Two fantastic teams duking it out, fantastic questions and characters aplenty, what more could you ask for? This is University Challenge at its absolute finest, including some genuinely stellar knitwear on both sides of the divide. It's a good thing that both teams are likely to come back for the second round; we need to see more from Chan and Co and how far this Imperial team is going to go.
Finally the match we've all been waiting for! This week sees series 51's highest scoring team yet in Edinburgh, complete with charming personalities, emphatic buzzing styles and all-round powerhouse intelligence. Tom cannot hide his bias as his Alma Mater Manchester faces off against the University of Exeter in this episode of University Challenge. Now that we are past the halfway point of the first round, we are definitely seeing more evenly matched teams facing each other than last year.
Now, this was a cracker of an episode, wasn't it? We had everything, lots of buzzes, a stellar team, and so many memeable moments. But, can you guess what our favourite was? With the first round halfway completed, we are starting to see the teams that have the potential to dominate the second round, and Trinity is definitely one of those with the most balanced team we have seen in a while.

Two more teams step into the ring, Reading with something to prove after last year's disappointing turnout and Strathclyde with quite a performance to live up two. What we got was a stellar performance with some fantastic deductive reasoning, excellent questions and the start of a fantastic working duo. Shame that we still can't agree on who the best dressed is...

Well, who could have predicted Ru Paul's Drag Race would be a bonus set in this week's University Challenge? We certainly didn't, and watching Paxman read out names like Bob the Drag Queen was quite a delight. Another week, another chance to talk about University Challenge. This time we have UCL versus the first of probably many Oxford Colleges, St Hilda's which until 2008 was a female-only college. This match turned out to be a proper nail biter, with the teams being near level pegging for much of the match and nearly ending in a tie! We also discuss the much more diverse lineup, the tie between religion and science, and disagree about who is best dressed.

The moment we have all been waiting for, and what a show it was! Well done to Warwick for picking up their second-ever title of University Challenge champion, and well done to Magdalene for putting up an amazing performance. Well, that was quite the match, wasn't it? We certainly were not expecting such a disparate final score, but as Paxman said, this was not a fair representation of Balliol's fantastic run through this season of University Challenge. Having said that, Lawson, Davies, Byrne and Payne have really stepped up their game and are looking like Warwick will have their work cut out for them in the final!

We finally say goodbye to Imperial, who have managed to stay in the competition against the odds and currently have the most points accumulated of any team. After this match, it is hard to imagine anything other than a win for Warwick, who last took the title all the way back in 2007. So long as Rout can remember his teammate's names, they look to be serious contenders for the final, and either Balliol or Magdalene have their work cut out!
The quarter-finals have come to a close, and with it, we say goodbye to the last Scottish University still in the competition. However, they did not leave without putting up a fight, and for a while, it looked like they were going to send Magdalene College home. If this is a sign of things to come, we are going to have very entertaining semi-final matches!
It appears as though we have yet to see Imperial in their final form! They are going from strength to strength, significantly building on their initial performance all those months ago. Sadly, this means that we have to say goodbye to Durham and their heartwarming camaraderie, but they gave an outstanding performance this match, really making Kohn and co. work for their place in the Semi-finals. Also, the wardrobe of the teams really wowed us this episode.
The time has come to say goodbye to yet another team in University Challenge. This time, the curtain falls on Birkbeck University, one of the highest scoring teams this series. Kudos to Strathclyde for another strong performance, particularly on starter questions. Balliol's contender this week, Durham, will have one final chance to secure their place in the semis. We're hurtling towards the semi-finals and eventually the final of season 50 of University Challenge. Last week we saw our first confirmed team, this week our first confirmed departure. Whilst King's has been consistent and strong until this point, Imperial are on fire and prove that their defeat against Warwick does not put them out of the count. This was one hell of a match, and even though we have to say goodbye to King's, it cannot be overstated how much fun it was to see both teams progress through the competition.
It is an episode of close calls, appalling French pronunciations and a surprising knowledge of fashion design for this week's University Challenge, and we are here for it on I Got That One! As we come ever closer to the end of season 50, a clear frontrunner to claim the title has emerged. Listen on to find out who we think it is.
We've now seen all the remaining teams play in their first quarter-final matchup. With both Imperial College London and the University of Warwick teams having impressive previous outings, we were expecting quite a match, and did it deliver! We talk about the amazing deductive powers of the teams, some amazing stats, and what we would like to see in terms of wardrobe for the remainder of the competition.
We are now on the third match of the quarter-finals, but as Paxman keeps reminding us in increasingly roundabout ways, we will see all the teams at least one more time. With that in mind, we have Durham vs Strathclyde battling it out to get their first of the two wins needed to progress. Will Durham's knowledge of French loanwords, the French Third Republic, and stains get them through, or can Strathclyde rely on their knowledge of material science and mathematics? With teams needing to win two matches to make it through to the semi-finals, everyone has at least two chances to prove they have what it takes to win this. However, this also means every match has the opportunity to be an upset. With that in mind, can Birkbeck continue their streak, or will Magdalene be the first college to break their stride?

In our last episode of 2020 we talk about a topic that has very much been on our minds and been a bit of an elephant in the room when it comes to University Challenge: Diversity. Yvonne takes the lead to talk about why diversity is important, what might be the current stumbling blocks and what could be done to address this. We might not have the answers, but we do have the confidence that students have the means to address at least some of the concerns we bring up.

However, instead of talking about that, we take the time to make some predictions for the next stage of the competition. They face Magdalene College Cambridge, the winners of the last of the first-round matches against University College Oxford. Will Webb's wondrous work win out, or has he met his match with the Cambridge team? The answer might well surprise you.

Here's episode 22 of I Got That One! This week, we see the team from KCL face off against Glasgow, who we last saw back in episode 1. After two nail-biting episodes in a row, did we get a third one? We are all the way up to episode 21, and it looks like the producers are determined to break our hearts as two more likeable teams are pitted against each other. This time, it's St. John's Cambridge, fresh off of their domineering win against the Royal Academy of Music, against Balliol, who had to work a bit harder against Claire College Cambridge. With the potential of a clash of siblings further down the line should St John's win, there was plenty at stake here.

Episode 6 of this season's University Challenge is once again here, and this time it's a real nail-biter between two of the oldest colleges in the UK. With a combined age of 1451, these institutions are the purest example of Oxbridge Pedigree.
Unlike their respective institutions, the teams are on the younger side, with an average age of 24 and 23 for Balliol and Clare respectively. Who comes out on top in this latest iteration of the Oxbridge competition? Listen with us and find out.
