At 18-year-old back in 2005, Joran Van Der Sloot became the prime suspect in Aruba’s most high profile case in the islands history, the disappearance of Natalie Holloway. And while that case is still officially unsolved, just five years after that, Joran was involved in yet another sensational case….the murder of Stephany Flores Ramírez down in Lima, Peru in 2010. While denying him and his friends’ involvement in Natalee’s questionable disappearance, Mr. Van Der Sloot did confess to the bludgeoning of Stephany in June 2010 as the video evidence against him was damning. At only 25 years old, Joran was then sentenced to 28 years’ in prison for killing Miss Flores.

It is ingrained in all of us, to appreciate natural beauty and all over the world there are places and towns that stick out for one reason or another. Aiken County, located near the mid-point of South Carolina's 250-mile border with Georgia, is famous for its lush gardens, hundreds of rare camellias, and thoroughbred horse racing. It’s a pretty place, that’s generally however, from 1986 to 1993, a series of murders defamed the name of Aiken County and changed how many locals will forever view it. Regrettably, these crimes have become an indelible mark for the county because the crimes have remained unresolved for decades.
On September 11, 2011, what seemed to be another bloody triple homicide case in the city of Waltham in Middlesex County, Massachusetts turned out to be not just another violent crime that some random killer mindlessly executed. The homicides, which almost decapitated Brendan Mess, Erik Weissman, and Raphael Teken, were entangled in a controversial mess that involved drugs, terrorism and the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Was it a coincidence that the murders took place on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks?

It drew national attention, but ultimately faded into a cold case. Thus, the Cindy Song disappearance remains one of the most notorious in central Pennsylvania.

In 2012, Bardstown was voted as "The Most Beautiful Small Town in America" in the Destination Marketing Association International's "Best of the Road" competition. It gave credence to the Visit Bardstown website’s description of Kentucky’s second oldest town as ”An atmosphere that seems to have magically leaped from the paintings of Norman Rockwell and the pages of Mark Twain.” So how does one reconcile the signs saying “Solve these Murders” sprouting within Bardstown in recent years? Simply remember that even the most beautiful places are plagued with mysteries -- and Bardstown is no exception.
You’ve got a Facebook friend request - or conversely, your friend request has been accepted - and the thrill of having a new virtual friend that may open beautiful possibilities is undeniable. Social media has become a refuge for people like Jenelle Potter who seeks for a respite from the dreariness of her own, real world. Imagine it - you’ve got a special package that arrived in the mail! It’s attractively wrapped, and seems to contain something valuable. Perhaps, an expensive bottle of perfume? Tickets to a Caribbean cruise? Or the latest gadget you’ve been saving up for? Instinctively, you become excited to unwrap the package, leaving no room for any suspicion or fear, as the surprise just fills you with joy. In almost all instances, such would be the scenario, right? However, five New York City residents had the opposite experience. Between 1982 and 1996, each of them received an unexpected, nicely wrapped package in the mail; but the surprise brought them shock, trauma and injuries, and one even met her untimely death, because what they opened turned out to be an explosive device. The attacks became known as the malevolent work of the “Zip Gun Bomber.”
One day in 1994, a police officer arrested a juvenile, and the first thing he asked the teenage boy was “What’s going on?” He replied to the officer matter-of-factly, “I’ve had a bad day today…I’ve killed my whole family.” As if that wasn’t enough for a spring day gone wickedly awry, the boy had also kidnapped his prom date, bringing her along to his school where he held his entire Trigonometry class hostage. That 17 year old culprit was Northern Kentucky teen Clay Nathaniel Shrout, who, prior to committing cold-blooded murder, had been known as a bright and conscientious honor roll student. So how did things go so wrong? How did Clay end up staging the unfathomable juvenile crime that stunned Boone County, Kentucky?

Of the allegedly 60 people, mostly women, that he tortured and killed inside his soundproof trailer, only a few lived to share their harrowing experiences. Their stories from hell led to David Parker Ray’s conviction – though not for the crime of murder, surprisingly.

These poison pen letters of the mid-1970s came to be known as the “Circleville Letters,” and for nearly two decades, they spread fear through the mail in Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio.

Such was the unfortunate destiny of Arizona native William Inmon who, in 2009, confessed to murdering three persons in a span of 3 years.

Burning a person to death is unequivocally diabolical, and dying slowly while getting scorched by blazing flames is extreme torture. Burning at stake had been a method of execution practiced during ancient times, and later adopted in Europe and North America. Although the last execution by burning in the United States involving a slave accused of rape in South Carolina occurred in 1830, horrible cases of people burned to their deaths still happen today. In July 2019, Judy Malinowski of Ohio died 700 days after her crazy ex-boyfriend doused gasoline and set her on fire. 15-year old boy Demetrius Griffin, Jr. was burned alive in September 2016 inside a burning garbage can in an alley in Austin, Chicago. And in 2014, the small town of Courtland, Mississippi was grappled with shock and sadness when a well-loved 19-year old cheerleader of her high school football team was burned to death, and died shortly thereafter. Her tragic story is the focus of our episode today.

Have you been to the Marshall County Historical Society Museum on E. Johnson Avenue, Warren, Minnesota? Visitors will feel the nostalgia of living in a small 1880s community through its historical buildings at the Settler’s Square. A stroll along the boardwalk presents attractions like a vintage bank, barbershop, tavern, school, church and many more. Its new 10,000 square foot-Visitor Centre has been attracting more guests because of its many exhibits, war artifacts room, collection of antique vehicles, and the so-called “UFO Car,” undoubtedly one of the museum’s star attractions. According to Sherlyn Meiers, Marshall County Historical Society Director, large crowds come to the museum just to see the early 1970s Ford LTD cruiser. And what is so special about this outmoded car that piques the interest of more people than a 1912 Maxwell, a Hart Parr Steamer, and a Studebaker Wagon of 1870s? The car with a shattered windshield and bent antennas is by all means not just any ordinary car. It was a central character in an alleged UFO encounter in 1979 which is popularly known as the “Val Johnson Incident” with Marshall County, Minnesota Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson as the sole witness of an out-of-this-world experience. Was it perpetrated by a force from outside of the human realm? Did Johnson face head-on an unidentified flying object?

On December 19, 1959, while the rest of the Christian world was in a frenzy preparing excitedly for the Christmas holidays, the small place of Osprey in Florida was in hysteria. A young family was inconspicuously murdered taking the lives of 25-year old Cliff Walker, his 24-year old wife Christine, their 3-year old son Jimmie, and 1-year old daughter Debbie. Investigations had been conducted, 587 people had become suspects at one time or another, American novelist Truman Capote and one of his best-selling true crime books had been indirectly enmeshed in the case, yet the Walker family murders remain unsolved as of its 60th anniversary on December 19, 2019.

Brooksville, Kentucky: The Unsolved Mystery of Erica Fraysure’s 1997 Disappearance
Brooksville is the county seat of Kentucky’s Bracken County which was settled before 1800 by William and Joel Woodward; thus, it was originally known as Woodward’s Crossroads. However, due to its more central location, it formally became a county seat on February 16, 1839 courtesy of the legislation sponsored by Senator David Brooks. Thus, Woodward’s Crossroads was renamed Brooksville in his honor. The small town could perhaps be described as plain, sleepy and uneventful as it was devoid of headline-grabbing mysteries, controversies and repugnant crimes. Which makes it an ideal place to live in and raise a family, if I may say. Life in Brooksville remained that way for almost 2 centuries – not until teenage girl Erica Fraysure disappeared with nary an evidence in 1997. It shook Brooksville to its core, and changed the dynamics of the people’s lives in this small Kentucky town. What’s more demoralizing is that Erica’s case remains unsolved, and is still being investigated not as a crime, but as a mysterious case of a missing person.

Craig, Alaska: The Unsolved Massacre on a Fishing Boat in 1982
Alaska, “The Last Frontier,” by almost any measure of coldness has the coldest and longest winters, the coldest summers, and the most number of freezing degree days. So just imagine the piercing coldness that blanketed Alaska on January 17, 1982 when “Cold Sunday” took place. It was a meteorological event wherein unprecedentedly cold air swept down from Canada, and plunged temperatures across much of the United States far below existing all-time record lows. Also in 1982, a man-made tragedy shocked Alaska that has become its worst cold case of massacre in history. In the tiny southeast Alaskan fishing village of Craig, eight individuals were killed by multiple gunshots, and left charred in an expensive fishing boat that was set ablaze by a still unknown perpetrator. Up to this day, it is still considered as Alaska’s most tragic unsolved mass homicide.

North Philly, Pennsylvania: Unmasking Serial Killer Gary Heidnik - the Real-life Buffalo Bill
One of the most chilling movie villains that brought terror on the wide screens is Jame Gumb, most popularly known as “Buffalo Bill,” from the 1991 award-winning psychological horror movie “The Silence of the Lambs.” Created by American writer Thomas Harris for his 1988 novel of the same title, the fictional character is a serial killer whose modus operandi is too fiendish. He relishes kidnapping overweight women, depriving them of food for weeks, killing and then skinning them dumping the victims in nearby rivers. As for the women’s skin, Buffalo Bill makes them into a “woman suit” for himself. This prods one to ask, “Is there a real Buffalo Bill who exists somewhere in the world?” The answer is partly “yes” because it turns out that Harris developed Buffalo Bill as a composite character – meaning, he based it not just on one, neither 2 nor 3, but six real-life serial killers. And one of them was Gary M. Heidnik who kidnapped, raped and tortured six women while holding them prisoner in a pit. He was finally sentenced to death, and executed by lethal injection on July 6, 1999 at age 55.
