Does your work actually matter for eternity? Sadly, most believers don’t think so.
That’s why I sat down with my all-time favorite nonfiction author and HERO in the faith and work space, Jordan Raynor, to discuss his latest (and maybe greatest) book, The Sacredness of Secular Work: 4 Ways Your Job Matters for Eternity (Even When You're Not Sharing the Gospel).
And in honor of the book’s release today, I finally get to share it with you.
I can hardly believe how much wisdom he packed into this one conversation, sharing:
- Some of the biggest lies and twisted truths perpetuated by the western evangelical church about work
- Why treating the Great Commission as the only commission ironically makes us much less effective at spreading the good news
- The key to seeing how 100% of your time at work matters to God
- Why abridging the gospel down to “the good news that Jesus came to save people from their sins” is to inadvertently accuse Jesus of being “loser instead of Lord”, and what the true message is instead
- The truth behind half-truths like “earth is our temporary home” and “we will worship for eternity” (this was huge for me)
- A summary of God’s plan for work from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22
And toward the end, I couldn’t help but ask, how is this book different than Every Good Endeavor - the book by Tim Keller that greatly influenced both my work and Jordan’s. You have to hear his answer. There is SO much life-altering information in The Sacredness of Secular Work that I can almost guarantee you haven’t heard.

Kayla remembers that day she was told, "You lack the qualifications for a career in journalism, therefore I cannot help or endorse you in the pursuit of media internships." by the dean of the journalism department at her university. Boy did she swiftly prove him wrong!
Kayla quickly paved her own way, cold calling news stations, until she landed internships that turned into a full time offer for a journalist position, that was immediately promoted into an offer to be an anchor after her boss saw her talent displayed through Kayla's YouTube channel.
She has gone on to become the recipient of the National Broadcasting+Cable’s Best Digital Multiplatform award, and was recognized by the Texas African American Museum as a Notable Woman of 2020. Kayla is also the FIRST full time African American Digital News Anchor in the United States.
Her drive to elevate her community led her to start her own digital marketing company where she currently serves as a Social Media Content Strategist, helping small to medium businesses optimize their digital footprint. Kayla's life goal is to walk out what it means to live an authentic, faith-filled life, and inspire others to do the same.
She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Marketing and Full Sail University with a Masters in Entertainment Business Management.

She is the founder of Fe Negotiation, a company she created to equip womxn to advocate for themselves through negotiation preparation, practice, and personal coaching, offering a tangible way for every womxn to be involved in the fight for equal pay. Not only that, she also serves alongside another entrepreneur as the Integrator of the growth team at a legal tech startup, Skribe.ai.
While I couldn’t be more impressed with Juliarose’s gumption and creativity in the startup space, what I treasure even more about her is her generosity and openness in the way she shares about her journey with advocating for herself, as a professional learning to thrive with Dyslexia and ADHD.
Y’all should have seen the questions I came into this interview prepared to ask - I was fully ready to just talk about how to negotiate your compensation, but instead, we got an even richer conversation about how to advocate and negotiate EVERY part of your career, not just compensation, but even the roles itself, so you can thrive no matter what your circumstance is - even if you’re learning how to excel in systems that weren’t originally designed for neuro-divergent professionals like me and Juliarose.
It turns out we were both homeschooled after getting diagnosed with neuro-divergent conditions in our early years (me with ADD), leading to similar realizations about the school system and traditional corporate life not being environments that were made for us. In the process of figuring out a way to thrive, we both used an entrepreneurial spirit to figure out ways to make up our own careers by focusing on what we valued most. In it all, you’ll hear Juliarose share how you can advocate for yourself, no matter how you’re made and what you’re aiming for.

Teehee I have been WAITING to introduce y’all to my dear friend Laura Allen (lovingly called LA) who is the host of the Almost Somebody podcast.
Anytime we get together, we end up having a hot lava fire conversation about faith, living an adventurous life with God by being tuned into your specific purpose - and today was no exception! As per usual (as you can also hear in the interview we did together for her podcast), we ditch my traditional list of questions and go right into the heart of Laura’s testimony, in which God called her to leave a lucrative position in tech sales and go down more of a non-traditional route with a big vision in mind.
It’s crazy how much we can both relate in how God called us to faith, and to quit our tech jobs to start podcasts!

Yep. Crazy right!? She even got a pretty exciting salary boost! (exact numbers shared at the end)
In this episode, you'll hear Ava share more about her coaching experience with me and how she:
- Decided it was time to leave 7 years of study and work as a Structural Engineer to pursue something totally new
- Carefully parsed through a huge number of job ideas, from Fire Fighting to Landscape Architecture, until she confidently realized UX Research was the perfect job for her
- Used my 5 step informational interview process as the secret sauce to A) clarify what she felt called to, B) find hidden job opportunities that aren't on LinkedIn, and C) gain a huge amount of leverage to land and negotiate the role and salary
- Successfully negotiated her salary, EVEN THOUGH she initially got caught off guard and threw out a low-ball number - she was still able to save it and come back strong!!
You have to hear this. Ava's story will encourage you to remember that:
- You're never too late or too pigeon-holed to pivot into something you'll truly love
- You CAN get paid (tremendously well, in many cases) to do tasks that don't feel like a job. In Ava's case, she loves just listening to people and giving them practical answers in return. It turns out UX Research is a profession that allows you to do that all day long!
- With the right strategy and support, you by no means have to go back to school or take a pay cut to land a job you feel called to

Her old sense of being a bright high-achiever had been worn down over the years into a lack of motivation that spurred her to the realization that it was time to make a change.

Oh man. I came across Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 this morning and thought: "THIS WOULD HAVE RESOLVED SO MUCH AGNST AND DISAPPOINTMENT if I had memorized this before trying to get a new job or start my business!"
Because this passage perfectly sums up a life-changing lesson we often forget:
Trying to predict the shortest path to success is often a waste of time. We don't know what God is going to work through. Just take faithful action and trust that God will probably surprise you with what ends up working out.

To me this is so sad, because the reality is that, as long as you take the obvious and simple steps to just make sure you’re respectful of their time, you aren’t bothering them at all!
In fact, there are at least FIVE perspective-shifting truths about networking that, when I share these with my clients, they (100% of the time) take a big breath, relax their shoulders, and have a big smile of relief spread across their face as they say, “Ah. Gosh. Wow. That makes so much sense. Ok! This really isn’t a big deal! I can do this!” Then it’s so rewarding to see them go from taking little to no action, overthinking everything, worried as can be - to actually feeling totally free and excited to network to their way into an incredible career. It’s so freeing!
So. Today I’m joined by my friend, Eduardo Zaldivar, a venture capital and private equity investor who has humbly and boldly achieved great heights in his career early on for the glory of God and the good of others. Eduardo has worked in Consulting, at a Startup, and is now in Venture Capital and Private Equity before headed to school next fall for a joint Stanford MBA and Harvard Masters in Public Policy program.

Over the last 2.5 years since starting my career coaching practice, I’ve gotten to be in a very unique place where I get to observe and help people make decisions (big and small) in my daily work. Hey accountants - we see you! This week's guest, Megan McGinnis, and I BOTH began the first two years of our careers working for two of the "Big 4" Public Accounting Firms. Megan was in Audit and I was on the advisory side of the business in Tech Consulting.
We know that, especially if you've worked SO hard to earn your master's degree and take your CPA exams, it can be ESPECIALLY difficult to consider leaving the field to "start over" in a new one if you're feeling dissatisfied.
That's why Megan came on the show to share her crazy encouraging story of reclaiming hope, excitement, and peace in her career after making a HUGE pivot this summer!
In less than 6 months, Megan:
1) Went through the career coaching process with me and discerned the new path she was called to pursue
2) Left accounting and started a fully booked out business as a Virtual Assistant
3) Was taken on as a full-time employee by one of her Start Up clients, where she now serves as the Director of Operations!

Isn't it funny how "dreaming" can be hard sometimes? It's easy for our brains to demolish a fun thought with, "Well, that's not really possible, so there's no use thinking about it." Even as a dreamer/imaginative type, I fall into this trap all the time!
But the truth is, our imaginations are GOD-GIVEN! It's a good and faithful thing to open your mind and ask God, "What are the exciting and meaningful things you'd like me to experience, create, and be a part of?" This is especially powerful in the context of your career!
That's why I recorded this prayer:
To ask God to give you freedom from any fears, doubts, and limiting beliefs that might be holding you back from experiencing the gift of dreaming big.
Because when you dream with God and open yourself to the possibility of being obedient to step out in good, God-given dreams - who knows what could happen in your life and career!?

“I just want to genuinely help people” - that’s the desire that once made our guest, Cheryl Rogers, think she was meant to be a doctor, but ultimately made her realize her perfect fit was in Civil Engineering!
Cheryl serves as a civil engineer for the city of Boerne, Texas, where she LOVES working as a public servant to improve the city for her fellow citizens.

I hear assumptions and defeating statements like that ALL TOO OFTEN, so I figured it was time to bring on the poster-child for defying conventions and busting into a new industry: my friend, Carly Hicks.
Carly decided to LEVERAGE her business major instead of feeling limited by it once she realized she wasn't interested in the traditional business jobs and wanted to pursue a career in film instead. Now she's all the better for it as her boldness and perseverance landed her in her current position as a Page for NBCUniversal in New York City.

As 2019 and the 2nd decade of this millennium are coming to a close, this often stirs up two types of feelings:
Pride and celebration as you crush your goals and live up to your expectations of where you would be at x age, in x year, making $x amount, loving life to x extent,
Or disappointment, sadness, self-condemnation, or even frustration with God that your expectations and hopes haven’t been met.
Every person, no matter what side of the equation you sit on, needs to orient themselves to the truth that we are called to rest and REMEMBER God, not just do/work/win/be productive.
We are called to remember God’s character; His goodness, His mercy, His provision, and so much more.
We are called to remember our need for God and the fact that we have no lasting hope without Him. We cannot earn our own salvation or create a lasting sense of self-worth by what we do or don’t do.
We are called to Sabbath, observing rest, renewal, and remembrance with God and our true purpose (to know and glorify Him, not ourselves) before we work. There is a reason why the creation story in Genesis pictures the beginning of each day starting in the evening, with rest, instead of in the morning with work until we earn our rest and time in stillness with God.

Amidst a society of purpose-obsessed Millennials and upcoming Gen Z-ers, an anti-passion movement of nay-sayers has been gaining momentum over the last few years. They propose that following your passion is fruitless and unfulfilling, and will leave you stuck in analysis paralysis trying to find a dream job that doesn't exist.

The path to finding one's calling often seems ultra-spiritual and mysterious, as if we are waiting for a voice in the wind to give us direct instructions for what to do with our life. Yet two words come to mind when reflecting on Emily Morris' path to finding and following her calling:

Bindu Thota's story honestly just reads like an epic international action/drama film.
Despite hating the idea of going to medical school, she ultimately obeyed God’s undeniable call and now experiences more joy than ever as as a General Surgery Preliminary Resident in Oakland, California and holds the hope of returning to the Middle East to aid Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation through the bridge of medicine.
Sounds kind of nice until you realize that the reality of following her calling has led her to 80 hour work weeks filled with near-constant death and trauma. In this episode you’ll hear Bindu unpack the mystery of how our greatest joy comes from surrendering everything we are, everything we have, and everything we dream of to the Lord so that we may having the supreme joy of knowing and following Him.

“Everything we were taught in college was to follow what you're passionate about and what you're good at and what you love - none of those things are how I would describe how I felt about med school, but there was this overwhelming peace that was telling me to move forward with it.”

Can you imagine training like an Olympian since early childhood and moving away from home at 16 to accept a position at one of the world's top professional ballet companies? Maybe you can, maybe you can't, but I'm sure you can picture how that would consume your life, dreams, and sense of identity - which is something we all have to grapple with when trying to place our identities in Christ, instead of the careers and dreams we hold so dearly.
For this, there is hardly any greater encouragement than Jordan Tilton's story of how God led her through her dream career as a professional ballet dancer, to heart-breaking injuries, to then making something beautiful out of a fresh start in both a new relationship with ballet and a new business.
Jordan is currently a professional dancer with Diablo Ballet and is the creator and host of a blog and podcast called Ballet to Business.
Before that, Jordan was a professional dancer with San Francisco Ballet when she experienced cycles of injuries that made first made her feel lost, then later found by the grace of Jesus Christ. Through these trials, found a love for restoring furniture that was the Genesis of a blog that would grow into an incredible podcast that highlights the stories of ballet dancers whose careers transformed from ballerinas to entrepreneurs.

PRACTICAL ADVICE
- Always send a follow up "thank you email" when you make a connection with someone (especially a potential business contact)
- Always accept an invitation to interview for a position. It's a great opportunity to practice your interviewing skills, make connections, and learn more about the company.
- Don't forget: interviews are as much them interviewing you as you are interviewing them. Ask questions, get to know the team, and pay close attention to observe the culture of the office.

Have you ever had a desire to save the world in some way? Dude, I have been desperate to play superwoman and change the world since 1993.
In the early days of my career coaching, I would literally say things like “you’re the world’s only chance to see God in a certain light.” and “The world will suffer in some way if you don’t follow your calling.”
I was trying to speak to the dignity and purpose that God created us with, and there might be some truth in those statements, but my unspoken message was:
God needs you and the world needs you - CORRECTION: God treasures you and deeply cares about how you use your life, but He doesn’t need you. His power and His will being done on this earth isn’t limited by whether or not you decide to be obedient. He just wants us to know Him and reciprocate His love in a personal relationship with Him. Also, we aren’t doing all this in our own power for our own glory! God is the one that gives you the calling and equips you with the ability and strength to complete it!

Do you know what discipleship is? What do you picture when you think of it? Does discipleship really matter at all?
These are the questions Renee Walters (whom I am so lucky to call my best friend) answers in today's podcast. Renee is a professional dancer with the Dallas Black Dance Theater, where she lives out her calling to bring light to the dance world and racial reconciliation to her community.
Renee has been a model for discipleship years before I understood the importance of walking it out by building deep relationships in a faithful Christian community and taking the time to regularly study the Bible in small gatherings of two or three people.
I totally missed this because I thought "don't you just have to believe in Jesus?" As it turns out, being a "believer" is much different than living the committed, transformed life of a "disciple." In essence, BELIEF is much different taking faithful action to live out that beliefs.
"Make DISCIPLES" is right there in The Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20:
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Over the last few days, I've realized that I have allowed myself to be deceived.
Not only that, but I have been encouraging others to embrace lies, half-truths, a gospel that does not save, and a picture of your calling that encourages you to exalt yourself and forget Jesus.
I used to say, “God appointed you to live at this time in history to fulfill a specific mission.” Well, I think that’s partly true:
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” - Ephesians 2:10 NIV
But it’s not the whole picture!! Because my intention in saying “God appointed you to this time for a specific mission” was primarily to encourage people to glean glory, pride, and personal happiness from their own power and purpose. This urged myself and others to crown ourselves the kings and queens of our own lives, instead of putting Jesus at the center.
So I wanted to repent and say...
BE CAREFUL OF HALF-TRUTHS! I am so, so sorry I was spreading one.
For it was NEVER God’s intent to make us feel like a god. Instead, it was His intent to assign us to our stations in life SO THAT BY HIS GRACE WE WOULD KNOW HIM.
Because HE DOESN'T NEED US, we need HIM!

Acts 17:24-28 (NIV)

Isn’t that incredible!? God is so gracious to do everything in His power to help us know Him so that we may experience the gift of eternal life with Him!
My lesson in this:
God didn’t intend for us to be prideful in thinking, “God predestined me to fulfill this mission so that I can be a savior.”
He intended everything in our lives to point us to realizing that JESUS ALONE is our savior.
In regards to finding your calling:
-
Remember that the most important thing God is calling you is faith and hope in Him and to disciple others to grow in the faith with you
-
Any unique calling from God places on your life, telling you to go here or there, or to complete a certain mission, IS FOR HIS GLORY, not yours
-
A calling is SERVICE, not self-righteousness

“If we’re all God’s little princes and princesses, why do so many people have to endure such terrible suffering?” What does that say about God? What does that say about what I’m called to do?
These are the fundamental questions that shaped Alex Park’s path as he followed God’s call to care for those in unimaginable suffering. We're talking war, genocide, human trafficking, etc.
This led him to pursue a career in the military, starting in the Army and going through the absolutely brutal testing to become a Green Beret. He is now back in his hometown of Los Angeles preparing for law school so he can continue his calling in the international security sector from a different angle.

- The origins of understanding his calling as a teenager when he realized he absolutely could not turn a blind eye to the world’s atrocities
- How he reckoned with God as he sought to understand why He would allow such suffering

When God says "Do you trust me?" What do you do?
In college and your early career, it's so easy to get caught up in the competition to get the most prestigious, high-paying job you can muster. In the mad dash for jobs before graduation, the concept of finding your true calling can seem irrelevant, frivolous, or even ridiculous as we hunt for any "respectable" job with the fervor of a cheerleader without a date a week before prom.
Then in walks Claire Raabe The friend that stopped me in my tracks as I watched her boldly turn down her prestigious consulting job offers and stand her ground in prayer until God led her to a job she flourishes in (let's be clear - she is as smart as a whip, and can do anything she sets her mind to, but "can do" is MUCH DIFFERENT than "made to do").
Where did that land Claire? She is more energized and satisfied by her work than most people I know, serving as an Academic Advisor for the Business Honors program at our alma mater: Mays Business School at Texas A&M University.

The word "calling" is thrown around so much, we don't know what it means anymore! Hint: it's definitely not the same (or as simple) as what you're passionate about. A few months ago, I realized I was helping people find purpose and fulfillment in their career as a career coach, but I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW exactly what the Bible said a calling is!
I was also unclear on the wholistic biblical picture of how God intended us to handle our careers and found it's DEFINITELY not as one-dimensional as "just work hard" - it's so much better than that. So I started researching like crazy and was constantly shocked no one seems to be talking about this...
So today I'm starting off the topic of what the heck a calling actually is (according to the Bible) by introducing a concept that is boiled down from a multitude of passages:
