It gets harder and harder to hold onto those close relationships that you really value. We decided to start this podcast for us. We wanted to have something that both records our insane relationship and serves as a marker to make sure we continue to value it.

We lost a giant recently. Tony Noce, longtime listener of the pod and a close friend and mentor of Chris, died on April 21, 2020. He succumbed to a long battle with stage 4 glioblastoma. We talked through our feelings about this loss and realized one more lesson that our good friend left for us, even in the end.

Laura has achieved what many scientists seek to do but fewer and fewer succeed at: she became a Full Professor. But what she found when she got there wasn’t all that different from what the rest of us who haven’t achieved those career heights are also finding: achievement doesn’t change us so fundamentally to erase our complexity. We especially spent time talking about mentorship and how that shapes us as scientific professionals. All of this comes together into the three major life lessons that she wanted to impart. In this episode, Sarah and Chris got into a deeper conversation about Christianity and faith. One of the issues within Chris' profession that he's particularly passionate about is the changing nature of the scientific enterprise. Chris is a scientist, but the nature of the work of scientists is changing as society is changing. The problem is that the scientific enterprise is not changing with it, at least not at a fast enough pace.
