Episode 48 Summary:

In this episode, I talk about how just as bread or nourishment is essential to our body, so our mission can be vital to a full life of success and service.

Notable and Quotable:

Here are some of the questions I posit in the podcast--

1) What sustains our Mission? —

What inputs do I need to invest into my mission and vision to give it the energy and strength to go forward? When my mission and vision is ‘tired’ or even “hangry”—what do I need to do to get it revived, even resuscitated? Could I track this, much like you would enter data into a food or exercise log, to see if I can notice trends which make my mission more OR less effective, energetic, and empowered?

2) And...The more important question,

Does our mission sustain us?

Is my mission a burden?

Does my mission and vision sap my strength?

When I spend time and energies towards the fulfillment of my mission and vision am I empowered or exhausted?

Or

Does thinking about my mission fire me up?

When I ponder my vision and trajectories do I get excited and enthused?

As I put time and talent towards my mission and vision, am I growing and being strengthened?

Summary Episode 45

The Moment for Mission podcast series seeks to offer inspiration and encouragement in the pursuits of our mission in order to make a difference.

Today, I am continuing with part 3 of my reflections on “Your Mission in Times of Uncertainty.”

Here are some of the questions I suggested that we ponder during these times of forced sequestration:

Who am I ?

Who do I want to be?

What do I need to do to go from who I am to who I want to be?

Where am I?

Where am I heading?

What changes to I need to make in order to put my mission as a priority?

How can I better involve my team, my family, my community, my faith, in my mission and vision?

Summary Episode 38--

Today on Moment for Mission, I am looking at the other side of that coin (from last week's "Inward Mission" episode) , “Outward Mission.”

I use the analogy of the coin deliberately, because I think our mission and vision must have both those sides, the “Inward” and the “Outward” to be complete and useful. Just like the quarter in my pocket, if only one side is engraved, then it is really of no use and no worth. We can have the best Inward Missional inspiration, but without an Outward Mission manifestation or Outward vehicle to express it, it is not yet fulfilled.

Summary Episode 37

Our mission, whether it is our own personal quest, our family’s goal, or the mission of our organization is ultimately dependent upon things we cannot see and are hard to measure. However, this nebulous commodity has the power to float or sink any vision. This episode (37) of Moment for Mission, I consider “Inward Mission.”

Summary Episode 32

Today on Moment for Mission, we are continuing our consideration of things that can be detrimental to our or our organization’s mission.

Have you ever been in a situation or a meeting when someone either by what they say, what they do, or how the attitude they exhibit simply ruins the experience or shuts down the flow of ideas and communication, or sows discord, discouragement, and division? I call these type of folks, “poison people” and today I want us to think about how “Poison People are detrimental to Our Mission.”

Podcast Episode 23 Summary

In M4M episode 23, of Moment for Mission, I talk about a concept I call, “TEAM BASED MISSION.”

If you give 10 minutes to listen to episode 23, you may glean some helpful and encouraging ideas about how a shift from “I” thinking to “WE” thinking can benefit your or your organization’s mission.

Quotable and Notable

“Team Based Missions is the methodology and program involving specially selected and trained advisors who, along with a team leader, implement a missionally driven program with the goals of cultivating an understanding of, a commitment to and the achievement of the overall mission and vision of the endeavor.”

Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M Episode 23

“Great organizations demand a high level of commitment by the people involved. Eliminate politics, by giving everybody the same message. Keep a flat organization in which all issues are discussed openly. Empower teams to do their own things.”

Bill Gates

The Bible writer of Ecclesiates (4:9-12) wrote:

Two are better than one, because they have good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and fall and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Podcast Episode 22 Summary

In M4M episode 22, I took a look at our second WORLD CHANGER and offered a profile on a person that was enormously influential in my life, Shorter T. Strang, Sr., my late father.

If you give 10 minutes to listen to episode, you will hear about a wonderful man whose mission in life was simply… to make a difference. And, you may be inspired by his life of simplicity and humility that truly made a impact on those around him and beyond.

Quotable and Notable

While not original to my father, he used to remind me often

“Do the best you can, with what you have, where you are.”

“There are very, very few of us who will become famous, have the chance to impact millions of lives with the stroke of a pen, or have our lives chronicled in the annals of history. BUT, we all, each and every one of us can make a REAL, substantive, long-lasting difference in the lives of those around us and even beyond.”

Podcast Episode 20 Summary

In M4M episode, I look at the idea of "Living Your Mission.

Quotable and Notable

When our mission becomes part of ourselves, a part of our “living,” then, we start to embody our values and vision so that they are visible and viable in most every aspect of our lives. Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M Ep 20

Rabbi Harold S. Kushner, author of the huge bestseller When Bad Things Happen To Good People wrote, “You don’t become happy by pursuing happiness. You become happy by living a life that means something.”

Some questions I consider when aligning my mission and my living, when developing, adjusting, the mission for myself, my company, the organization I serve, my mission-service work are:

Is what I am seeking morally sound?

Is the Mission for myself or my organization JUST?

Does it exhibit mercy?

Is equality a part of this vision I / we have?

Does this Mission benefit others in meaningful manner?

Podcast Episode 19 Summary

In M4M episode 19, I take a look at the topic of “Missional Thinking.”

If you take time to listen to episode, you will hear a brief bit of theological discourse involving the terms “Incarnational,” “Messianic,” and “Apostolic,’ and how these relate focusing on a life or organizational mission focus.

Quotable and Notable

“Shema” in Hebrew language means “hear.” The concept of “shema” is the very symbol of the Jewish faith. It refers to the Deuteronomy passage “Hear O Israel, the LORD our God is one. You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.” (Duet 6:4)

Podcast Episode 17 Summary

In M4M episode # 17, I address the dilemma we may face at some point, what to do “When Your Mission is REALLY Big?”

Quotable and Notable

Take a BIG task, vision, goal, and BREAK IT DOWN into smaller, more manageable, more achievable bits. “ Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M Ep 17

Daddy used to tell me:

“If you have to swallow a frog, it is best not to look at him too long.

If you have to swallow a lot of frogs, you’d better swallow the biggest on first.”

US President Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “I have two kinds of problems, the urgent and the important. The urgent are not important, and the important are never urgent.”

Podcast Episode 15 Summary

In M4M episode 15, I take a look at the topic, “Persistence in Mission.”

If you listen to episode you will hear some of my thoughts about why is it important to ‘hang in there’ and How do we manage to do it?

Quotable and Notable

Albert Einstein wrote, “It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.”

Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States, wrote:

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

Galatians 6:9 “Do not grow weary in doing what is right for we will reap at harvest time, as long as we do not give up.”

“I do not have to all-of-the-sudden, TODAY, right now… do some great and marvelous thing! My missional journey is made up of many, many small steps. And, I think yours is as well.” Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M Episode 15

“Many little people in many small places undertaking many modest actions can transform the world.” African Proverb

Hellen Keller wrote, “I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.”

Podcast Episode 14 Summary

In M4M episode 14, we have our first Moment for Mission Book Review!

If you give 10 minutes to listen to episode 14, I am going to give you a snapshot of an interesting foray on the subject— The book is Life on Purpose by Victor Strecher.

Victor Strecher works in Public Health at the University of Michigan. In 2010, after living with a rare cardiac illness for years, his 19-year-old daughter succumbed to a sudden heart attack. In his book, Life on Purpose, Strecher recounts how dealing with a chronically ill child and her eventual death changed his perspective on life and how he was to engage it. Reading this book you will find a mash-up of personal reflection, uplifting stories, and reports of recent science on the topic of ‘purpose’ that has emerged in recent years.

“The dynamic process of aligning yourself with your life purpose requires energy and willpower: wind in your sails to move you forward, and a strong rudder to prevent being blown off course.” Victor Strecher, Life On Purpose

Strecher concludes, “If I were you, I wouldn’t wait around for more research. I’d just get a purpose.” “The scientific evidence supporting the benefits of one is extremely promising, and, at the risk of sounding a bit alarmist, we need it.”

In so much of living a life-on-purpose, we must constantly be about the business of translating the KNOWING what to do into the DOING what we know!

Podcast Episode 13 Summary

In M4M episode 13, we consider the question,

“What is NOT your mission?

If you give 10 minutes to listen to episode 13, I will tell you some of the “why” I think it would be important to consider, “What is NOT your mission?”

Quotable and Notable

Engineer, Author, Designer, Inventor, and Futurist, Buckminster Fuller wrote,

“The minute you begin to do what you really want to do, it’s really a different kind of life.”

“Ask yourself, How badly do I want my mission to be achieved? If it is not bad enough to say “NO” to some things in order realize your vision, then maybe it is your mission that needs review, rather than the ‘what is NOT your mission.’”

Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M Episode 13

Podcast Episode 12 Summary

In M4M episode 12, we consider why and how we might incorporate others in our Mission.

If you give 10 minutes to listen to episode 12, you will see that when we actively engage others with the things that excite us, then the results can be pretty amazing!

Quotable and Notable

Fred Foy and Maasai Children Near Kimana, Kenya

Rev. Dr. Fred Foy Strang speaking with Maasai children, Kimana region, Kenya

(Yes, that is our cool Land Rover in the background!)

“When members of a community understand life as a response to a large and generous world, created by a great and merciful Providence, will the possibilities of life together become more fully realized. (P 196). … But with this spirit of vocation, this conviction that we are not, after all, our own, but belong to Another, the world opens up, becomes a place for others, and is illuminated by a spreading and abiding hope.” (196) A.J Conyers in The Listening Heart: Vocation and the Crisis of Modern Culture.

In order for our mission to have broader impact, and sometimes in order for it to be able to be achieved at all, we must involve other people. Here are a few points to consider today:

  • Present our mission with passion;
  • Invite others to join us in the journey;
  • Involve people as genuine partners in the mission;
  • Console one another when setbacks come;
  • Celebrate together successes along the way;
  • Don't ever worry about who gets the credit;

Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M, Episode 12

Mahatma Gandhi said this: “A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of human history.”

If you give 10 minutes to listen to episode 10, you will learn about an amazing woman who pursued her mission through many difficulties and discouragements and made a real difference in the world of her day and continues to inspire others even today.

Quotable and Notable

“Let us not be surprised when we have to face difficulties. When the wind blows hard on a tree, the roots stretch and grow the stronger, Let it be so with us. Let us not be weaklings, yielding to every wind that blows, but strong in spirit to resist.”

Amy Carmichael (1955). “Edges of His Ways: Daily Devotional Notes”, p.30, CLC Publications

It is not the place where we are, or the work that we do or cannot do that matters, it is something else. It is the fire within that burns and shines, whatever be our circumstances.

Amy Carmichael (1955). “Edges of His Ways: Daily Devotional Notes”, p.218, CLC Publications.

Amy Carmichael echoed this thought when she wrote:

Let nothing be said about anyone unless it passes through the three sieves:

Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary?

Amy Carmichael (1997). “God's Missionary”, p.12, CLC Publications

Podcast Episode 9 Summary

In M4M episode 9, I discuss the importance of communication in our pursuit and accomplishment of mission.

In listening to episode 9, you will hear the importance of “Communicating Your Mission.” And, by the conclusion, I hope you will have a bit more confidence to positively present Your Mission, your Vision for yourself or your organization to others.

Quotable and Notable

As we realize movement, change, advance, setback and then success, it would be of enormous value to communicate that with others.  Communicating our mission is paramount to its success.

If you are leading an organization, or church, or school, you have to work diligently to keep the mission before your people. People have short memories and are easily distracted—weekly reminders of our corporate mission are not only appropriate, but much needed.

If you are pursuing you personal life-mission, you must discipline yourself to communicate both your struggles and your success with a confidant or a group of trusted folks. These trusted friends will empathize with you, encourage you, advise you, challenge you so that you can keep on the course of your mission. And, if you are like me—and I bet you are, I have a short memory and I am easily distracted!

Podcast Episode 7 Summary

In M4M episode 7, my topic is “Mission--Vision--Vocare”.

If you give 10 minutes of you time to listen to episode 7, you will begin to see how an informed understanding of “vocation” can inspire us in our Mission and focus our vision to press on.

Quotable and Notable

“A vocation is something that goes deeper than economy; it embraces the whole of our being. Doing something we love, something we feel we were made to do, ‘called’ to do, something that give us and others life, something that draws us together as community rather than pushing us apart with violence enacted from our unabashed demand for freedom of choice— these ideas begins to get at the essence of ‘vocare’.”

Dr. Fred Foy Strang, M4M Episode 7

Steve Jobs – Founder of Apple Computer spoke these words to students at Stanford University, in 2005: “You’ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don’t settle.”

The Latin word 'vocare' or vocation is significant as we consider our individual and corporate Mission-- this word means responding to a 'calling' or 'direction /directive' to invest in something significant. When I can put aside my 'career' aspirations which essentially get nowhere, and focus on listening to a 'call' from a Higher Power to some task, quest, or meaningful use of my gifts and talents for the betterment of others and this world then I am much more content. I think Frederich Buechner said it well "The place where your deepest passion and the world's deepest need meet is the place you will find your calling fro God and the most fulfillment in life" (paraphrase).

Individuals with a high sense of purpose had a lower risk of developing the same conditions. “

Podcast Episode 2 Summary

In M4M episode 2, we explore some thoughts surrounding the question,

“What is Your Mission?”

In Episode 1, I stated that “direction is important.”

If you listen to this Episode 2, then you will begin to be equipped to genuinely ask, “Do I know where I am heading?” and have a few tools to help you answer.

Getting up to go to work to make some money to buy some stuff to go home to go to sleep to get up to go to work to make some money to buy some stuff to go home to go to sleep… is NOT a life pattern that makes one fulfilled nor does it help other much.

Quotable and Notable

Some writers help us to try to remember the important things.

Theologian, Frederick Buechner, wrote-

“Vocation comes from the Latin vocare, to call, and means the work a man is called to by God. There are all different kinds of voices calling you to all different kinds of work, and the problem is to find out which is the voice of God rather than of Society, say, or the Super-ego, or Self-interest… Neither the hair shirt nor the soft berth will do. The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”
