Thanksgiving is that one time of year set aside to give thanks 

We are living in a time of so much uncertainty, turmoil, malice and division.  Why is it and what can we do to change it?  Why did people seem to get along better years ago but not today or did they really get along better years ago?  We are the same people in the same county so something has happened.  Maybe instead of focusing on what we don’t have or what others may take from us, we should focus on what we have and what we can give so more can have too.  What do you have to be thankful for and what do you want to have to be thankful for?

Feb was African American History Month or Black History Month.  What did it mean to you?  I even hear some people who say we no longer need it.  I disagree.  Since we have it, what are we doing with it and what difference does it make?  Heck, what difference can it make?  

The Black Agenda

Each year I like to discuss the Black Agenda since it is the one month where we can openly talk about 100% Black stuff.  This year was no different.  I asked if we should have one and what should it be composed of.  

Reparations

The making of amends for a wrong one has done, by paying money to or otherwise helping those who have been wronged.  That is how the Merriam Webster dictionary defines Reparations.  Should Decedents of American Slaves receive reparations?

11 Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Candlelight Vigil

The Candlelight Vigil is an event to continually share Dr. King's message to inspire us to do more and better.  This year's theme,”Humanity Tied in a Single Garment of Destiny.”

We use the Kwanzaa principal of Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), to produce this event. We have speakers and occasionally performers sharing conscious words. It came about 11 years ago when we noticed younger people didn't seem to know much about Dr. King, his accomplishments, and movements that he led. We wanted something right in the community that was free to attendees. It was not meant to replace anything but to be in addition to.

It was also an opportunity to introduce some to our Dr. King statue. We are blessed to not only have a larger than life size statue and to have a street named after Dr. King but we have the statue on the street. That is rare. Even rarer is to have Coretta Scott King Roses. Thanks to the suggestion by Franklyn G. Verley and the support of Commissioner Lawrence Weekly.

This is our first show of the New Year as it is the first Saturday of the New Year.  When President Trump took office on Jan 20, 2017, I said this, “We celebrated the Peaceful transfer of power from our 44th President, Barack Obama t our 45th President Donald Trump.  Some saw it as a time to celebrate and others saw it as a time to mourn.   How do you see it today now that we are 2 years in and have a government shutdown?  We have a new congress and split government.  What do you want to change in this new year and why?  Let’s discuss this.

Rosa Parks, the Catalyst for the Civil Rights Movement

“Lest We Forget,” is a phrase often used from military remembrances.  It is associated with Armistice Day which we now call Veterans Day.  Dec1, 1955, is another day that is of such importance that it too deserves the Phrase, “Lest we forget.”  That is the day that Sister Rosa Parks Decided to not take unfair and unlawful treatment while riding a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama.  This is the person, the date and event that many historians attributed to be the catalyst to the beginning of the modern day civil rights movement.

Today marks the 120th anniversary of what some called a race war, others called an insurrection but what really was a coup d'etat. It was the overthrow of civilian government by force of one of the most promising cities for racial harmony in the South. I am not speaking of South America but the good old U.S. of A.

This week we experience the death of a political icon in the late Sen. John McCain and the great Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.  Both lived more years than promised since none are, both from very different backgrounds with both leaving a large legacy and body of work behind.  As I was speaking and reflecting on their lives and funerals we both thought that these two giants left giant unfilled shoes and who would fill them?  Suppose they took their shoes with them but left us the cobbler’s tools and materials to build our shoes from our experiences base on the foundation of our collective ancestors.  What shoes will we build, why and where will we go?

She is an active member of Concord Baptist Church and loves to worship and study the word of God.  She serves in the children’s choir, “Voices of Love,” Seeds of Jubilee Dance Ministry and Bible Study Fellowship.  Robyn is an “A” student and avid reader.  She is currently in the 2nd grade and has attended Canterbury Episcopal School since PreK 4.  Robyn looks forward to inspiring the next generation of girls to have a positive outlook on life despite negative circumstances!  She resides with her Mother and Father in Desoto, Texas.

On many of our Christmas shows we like to discuss the meaning of Christmas and/or the history of Christmas.  We have discussed things like what does a lump of coal and shoes have to do with Christmas?  What is the meaning of the word, Christmas and why do some people say, X-Mas?  We have discussed the Yuletide and Yule log.  Why do we have a Christmas tree and the specific kind?  Why a Christmas reef:  when is it hung, what is it made of, why, why it is often found on doors and when should it and the tree come down?  Did you know that Santa use to have a Black helper and what his name is?  This Christmas, I simply wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas and discuss what Christmas traditions do you have?

Is Sexual Harassment becoming Trivialized?

This week allegations of sexual harassment against another democratic elected official have been made.  The range is from freshmen congressmen, a former comedian to the dean of Congress.  There has been a major awareness initiative called #MeToo that has acted as a wave over the country.  Many entertainers and business leaders have stepped down or have been fired.  Matt Lauer was fired Tuesday.  Prior to him it was Bill O’Reilly and others in the news media.  It seems to be a low tolerance for it in the business and entertainment world but not so much in the political arena.  In spite of calls for resignations most are still there from the President to the latest Congressperson. Are politicians serious when they call for another to resign or maybe it’s just political cover?  It seems that our moral compass is rolling back due to political tribalism that has run a muck!  Is this really a big moment for sexual harassment victims or is Sexual Harassment becoming Trivialized?

The Importance of Nevada Day for African Americans

Nevada Day commemorates the admission of the state of Nevada into the union on October 31 1864.  Some of you may ask why this should be any more important to African Americans than any other state.  Fair question and that is why I am doing the show…J.  Nevada played an important role in ensuring victory for the North and the end of Slavery for Africans in America.  Nevada Day gives us a moment to reflect on that freedom and the role that Nevada played.  Nevada has become an important state politically.  Often it is seen as a bellwether for the rest of the country.  Nevada also has the largest African American population per capita West of Texas.  There are opportunities in Nevada that are not prevalent in other states for all and specifically for African Americans

The FBI’s dedicated surveillance of black activists follows a long history of the US government aggressively monitoring protest movements and working to disrupt civil rights groups, but the scrutiny of African Americans by a domestic terrorism unit was particularly alarming to some free speech campaigners.

“When we talk about enemies of the state and terrorists, with that comes an automatic stripping of those people’s rights to speak and protest,” said Mohammad Tajsar, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union.

In Las Vegas last week the largest mass shooting and killing in modern history took place and it happened at the hand of one man.  59 dead and roughly 500 wounded!  It happened at an outdoor country music festival and concert.  While the motive is still sought in this incident it does seem to happen more frequently with greater casualties.  What is it about American society that breeds these acts, how does our politics play into this and why does this type of violence gain more attention than others?  It just might be partisan politics

Moving the goal posts!

The protest started due to the treatment of African Americans at the hands of police throughout the nation.  This was after public Mass Street demonstrations were said to be disruptive.  This is when a silent respectful one was started by a National Football League Quarterback by the name of Colin Kaepernick.  He began to sit out the National Anthem. A Veteran suggested that he kneel as a sign of respect so he began kneeling on one knee.

Many tried to make it about not having the right to protest.  They were reintroduced to the 1st Amendment.  They said they didn’t have the right to do it on the job because the 1st Amendment didn’t cover them in the work place so they were shown the NFL contract that did not require them to stand.  Some said that it disrespected the flag as the flag and National anthem required them to stand.  The United Stated Codes were shown where no such requirement existed.  Next it was that they were showing dishonor to the troops.  Military organizations came out and explained that the troops fight and die to up hold the constitution. Now it is that there is a time and place but when is that time and place other than the fictional place in their minds of neverwherey?

Many of you may have heard of the flag protest controversy with the National Football League’s Colin Kaepernick.  Our president has once again weighed in and in a big way.  Not only did he tell fans to walk out if a player protested the National Anthem but later used vulgar language saying, “get that Son of a Bit_ch off of the field right now, out, he’s fired!” The protest started due to the treatment of African Americans at the hands of police throughout the nation. 

This is on top of what the president said after Charlottesville.  For those remarks Republican Senator Bob Corker rebuked the president by saying, “the president has not yet been able to demonstrate the stability nor some of the competence that he needs to demonstrate in order to e successful.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell commented after president’s Trumps latest remarks at a campaign rally in Alabama.  “The president failed to understand how the league and its players work to together to create a sense of unity in our country and in our culture.

It does make me wonder if the president doesn’t know that we have a 1st amendment in our constitution and that one purpose for it is to prevent Tyranny by backing it up with the 2nd amendment…what would you say to our president if you had a chance to sit down and have a one on one with him?

It is a belief I believe that was in the authors and signers of the United States Constitution.  It is something many have believed at the formation of this country and most practiced until relatively recent times.  It puts governmental power into the hands of the people and takes it away from the wealthy, the powerful, oligarchs and monarchs.  As long as the people believe they are the government and have the power of government then our democracy is strong and will function properly as well as move us all upwards and forwards. We must be vigilant with this belief and exercise it constantly.

Community Leadership

Community leadership is a specific form of the general concept of leadership. It is frequently based in place and so is local, although it can also represent a community of common interest, purpose or practice. It can be individual or group leadership, voluntary or paid. In many localities it is provided by a combination of local volunteers, business and government and is best served by what is called "place management", ie. a combination within a region of Government resources, professional and business skills and the energies of the local community [Sorenson & Epps, 1996:115-117; Osborne & Gaebler, 1993]

A community leader is someone who is perceived to represent the community’s interests and plays the role of protecting them. This role could be paid for or voluntarily, most communities have held this role as a voluntary one.  Community leaders have a vast range of roles that range from mobilizing communities for a common cause to designing courses of action to overcome common challenges.

Sam shared and poured a lot of him into us. Physically he is no longer with us but he will still be seen through us.” Mr. Sam Smith, who many called just Sam, is the man who started the Gathering. He was the only Black book store owner in the state for a while. He got more Black people on fire department than any other locally. He is the man I admired more than any other I met. This in no way is all that Mr. Smith accomplished during his time with us but merely a snapshot.  We affectionately referred to him as, The Mayor of the Bistro and the Oracle of Las Vegas.

When I think of things I have done inspired by him and what wouldn’t have happened in my life had he not been in it, I see such a void. My life is fuller because of him and the community has been enriched by him through me. He said, “we should always be excellent.”

When I am in the community my goal was to be excellent so they could see his excellence in me. It was a way to show a living respect to him and also for his approval. I admired him and wanted his approval probably more than any other man I have known. A very close military buddy asked, “Who is Sam Smith?”  I simply said, “He was the man I would have wanted to call me son.”

Civil Rights Act and Independence Day

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Pub.L. 88–352, 78 Stat. 241, enacted July 2, 1964) is a landmark civil rights and US labor law in the United States that outlaws discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. It prohibited unequal application of voter registration requirements, racial segregation in schools, employment, and public accommodations.

Powers given to enforce the act were initially weak, but were supplemented during later years. Congress asserted its authority to legislate under several different parts of the United States Constitution, principally its power to regulate interstate commerce under Article One (section 8), its duty to guarantee all citizens equal protection of the laws under the Fourteenth Amendment and its duty to protect voting rights under the Fifteenth Amendment. The Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Memorial Day

The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day," which was first used in 1882. Memorial Day did not become the more common name until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967. On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day from its traditional dates of May 30th to a specified Monday, the last Monday in May, in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. After initial unwillingness to comply, all 50 states adopted the change within a few years.

On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon.  It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. Metropolitan Police Kill an Unarmed Black Man

We need to find our collective voice on this and sooner than later. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Force killed a man who came to them saying, he was being chased and needed help.”  He took off running and the police took off after him.  After approaching a vehicle in the street, after leaving the Venetian Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, the police officer shocked the man with a taser.  The man was shocked 6 more time with is 4 more than allowed by the police department.  Following the excessive tasing the man was repeatedly punched in the head and face area by the police officer.  The final move was a reverse chock hold that is not allowed by the metropolitan Police Department.  The man had not committed a crime and was not charged. The officer is on paid leave.  There needs to be a news conference with our specific demands for change.  We will discuss what some of those changes should be.

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. I have come to believe that the main issue with the two party system is not just the specific two parties but the party system itself and the quest for party purity. The structure is the problem. It comes across like a person that tells us that they believe in diversity but will only support Blue people.  Ultimately that is not much different than what led the current parties to their current condition.  That means an, as good or better candidate can come along but will be overlooked because they are rainbow colored. That seems like more division to me.  How can we add while at the same time dividing?  Let’s discuss this.

The Democratic Party seemed split during the presidential primary between Secretary Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders.  Small factions have begun to organize and execute actions to reshape and in some cases to take over the Democratic Party.  Not only is this happening locally but in states throughout the country.  Many are establishing intrastate networks.  As I have attended some of these meetings locally the first thing that I notice is the absence of Black people.  Usually I am the only one there or maybe one other.

Feb is African American History Month or Black History Month.  What does that mean to you?  I even hear some people who say we no longer need it. 

The Black Agenda

Each year I like to discuss the Black Agenda since it is the one month where we can openly talk about 100% Black stuff.  This year is no difference so we are going to discuss what our agenda should be and especially in the era of President Donald Trump!

Unity

Often we speak of unity and how, “if we could only come together.”  This is usually said around a group of Black people from 3 people or a room full.  It seems to me that at those moments, we are together.  How about joining or collaborating to build and increase capacity?  Now that would be positive progress…!

Emmett Till-Injustice Was Done

Emmett Till is a name many know and have even seen the pictures of him lying dead in an open casket for the world to see the horror of his death.  He was beaten, mutilated and shot dead in the Jim Crow Mississippi South.  Allegedly he whistle, catcalled or even aggressively approached a young white woman.  He was just 14 years old!  There is a new book out and the young white woman is now in her 80’s and has confessed that the non-crime Emmett Till was accused of and murdered for never happened.  This is American History that like Jewish suffering in Nazi Germany what we should not forget.

The American Intelligence agencies agree that there were official nation state sanctioned attempts to interfere in the presidential election and that Russia is the most likely culprit.  It has been suggested that it may not have been to sway the election in the favor of one candidate or the other but its main goal was to sew doubt in the election process and undermine its legitimacy. Have they succeeded but had the American press already beat them to the punch?  We will discuss this today.

In a recent article by Shaun King for the New York Daily News Paper, A Staffer for a United States Senate had this to say about the senate, Democrats and diversity:  “They are all so phony,” the staffer told me. “Every time I hear any of the Democratic senators, including my own boss, talk about diversity; I cringe, because it’s all one big lie."

As a Harvard-trained historian, Carter G. Woodson, like W. E. B. Du Bois before him, believed that truth could not be denied and that reason would prevail over prejudice. His hopes to raise awareness of African American's contributions to civilization was realized when he and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week in 1925.

The shooting of young brother Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri has invoked a lot of fear, anger and emotion in black people around the country. The media has tried to paint this young man in a horrible light to warm the jury pool up to an acquittal for this cop if it makes it to court. Media outlets have focused on Looting and other minor things to distract from the poor history of this city and it's relations to African Americans. We will be discussing the issue and what we believe are the solutions for future incidents like this. We can't lose another black life to senseless violence. The Dr. King’s Family Dispute

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has three remaining children:  Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King and Dr. Bernice King.  On the anniversary observance of their Father’s 85th Birthday the two Brothers notified their Sister that they wanted to sell their Father’s 2 prized possessions which were his traveling Bible which President Obama used for his second presidential oat ceremony and to sell Dr. King’s Nobel Peace Prize Medal.

Dr. Bernice King has hidden the two items and refuse to turn them over to the King Foundation which owns the articled due to her Brothers expressed plan to sell them to a private buyer.  

Should these items be considered sacred and not sold or is this just business?

Here is a portion of the article, "We call you liquid money. The same way that water falls out of a man’s hands, money typically seeps out of a black person’s hands the same way. It is amazing that the first Black president of South Africa lived the life that he lived. He has been an ICON for South Africa, Africa and the rest of the world for a long time. He suffered after fighting for the freedoms of his people similar to Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King, slain still in his youth and the other living to be almost 100 years old and became the first Black President of South Africa. Both men leaving a mark that maybe none other could have and maybe no one else will do later.

"For now, let us pause and give thanks for the fact that

Nelson Mandela lived -- a man who took history in his hands,

and bent the arc of the moral universe toward justice."

Let’s take a moment to reflect on the live and times of President Mandela.

Here is a suggestion, may be the answer to these continuing budget fights and government shutdowns as well as sequestrations is to link Congress’ pay the accomplishments of passing timely budgets. If they don’t pass a complete budget we reduce their pay to a minimum wage. Our Topic(s) today: “The AFFORDABLE CARE ACT / 9/11, 12 Years Later”     Do you remember where you were during 9/11 and are we any safer today? When you heard the president talking about attacking Syria with limited strikes did it take you back to 9/11? The World Trade Center is a complex of buildings under construction in Lower Manhattan, New York City, United States, replacing an earlier complex of seven buildings with the same name on the same site. The original World Trade Center featured landmark twin towers, which opened on April 4, 1973 and were destroyed in the September 11 attacks of 2001, along with 7 World Trade Center. The other buildings in the complex were damaged in the attacks, and their ruins were eventually demolished. The site is being rebuilt with five new skyscrapers and a memorial to those killed in the attacks. As of August 2013, only one skyscraper has been completed; and 2 others have been topped out. The remaining 3 are expected to be completed before 2020. One World Trade Center will be the lead building for the new complex, reaching more than 100 stories at its completion. The movie we saw was Lee Daniel's The Butler. I can't express to you enough how important this film is to the restoration of the Black community. This film lays out our experience as citizen of the United State of America with such grace and dignity that I weeped at the sight of our beauty. I saw myself and the wisdom and love that my momma, my daddy, my aunt Martha, Grandma Lena, grandma Era, uncle Ralph, grandpa George, aunt Virginia and uncle Sammy has shown me through the year. This film took my indignant entitlement and loving reminded me that it is the shoulders of my humble servant ancestor that I am standing upon. It is because they served with pride and grace that I am here. Our show for June 18th will focus on the Our Own Voices / S.W.I.M  book drive to raise 10,000 books for 1,000 chidlren in the Twin Cities. We know prisons are built based off of 3rd grade reading scores. We want to reverse that trend and strenghen the community. We have a new movement we are starting and it's called act now. We aren't waiting or outsiders to help us, we are going to help ourselves. The importance of reading and the Our Own Voices 2 cities book drive! If your child can not read to level by the third grade, there is a jail cell projected for him or her. Do you know that most Black children do not have their own library of 10 books and many have no books?   As a country, as a people and as communities, we can do better than that.  I assert we have to do better than that! Let’s help them by giving the gift or life; giving them the gift of reading by giving them books
