When designing for neurodiversity, something as seemingly trivial as the size of a lunch-room table can have a significant impact. We’ll come back to the table later. The names of many neurodivergent conditions clearly indicate how they are perceived: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), etc. Interestingly, adults with these conditions often do not think of themselves as having a disorder or disability; they simply recognize that they experience the world differently in some ways than most people.

For ESG, we’ll unpack how this investing jargon has become a must-have department across the Fortune 500. We’ll debunk some common misconceptions, and explain how to think about Scopes 1, 2, and 3. What will you have to report and when? And how will it change the CRE world? For workplace change, we’ll take a clear-eyed look at where the trends are headed. The office isn’t dead, but it’s never going back to the way it was. As anyone who’s been in the industry long enough knows, change is the only constant. How do we get CRE, facilities, sustainability, and communications on the same page, and how do we help create a future of work that works for everyone?

“We are not getting any younger.” True for any human on this Earth, but especially so when it comes to global demographics. As birth rates fall and life spans expand, the average age of the world population is rising faster than any time in human history. Not surprisingly, this trendline in general population makeup is reflected in workforce demographics. In the U.S., the fastest growing age segment of the workforce is people over 55. So fast is this cohort growing that the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates by 2024, workers over the age of 55 will be the largest segment of the U.S. workforce, a seismic shift from historically being the smallest. And far from a demographic anomaly, the workforce will continue to get “grayer” through at least the year 2060. An aging workforce brings with it structural challenges, but also significant opportunities. Facing low unemployment and looming skills shortages, recruiting and retaining highly experienced and knowledgeable workers represents a key strategy for organizations looking to thrive in an increasingly competitive landscape. An added bonus: age diverse teams have been shown to be more innovative. But to deliver on this potential requires changes in approach; creating a workplace that is welcoming of workers of all ages is a great place to start. Hybrid working is forcing organizations to reevaluate their real estate footprints. At the same time, corporate real estate (CRE) professionals are juggling a multitude of issues, including technology and automation, supply chain reorganization, DEI, sustainability, and climate risk, that are adding new dimensions to discussions on portfolio strategy. CRE professionals agree that there is widespread rightsizing of portfolios occurring which is resulting in space reduction, the shedding of excess or inefficient space to cut costs, as well as ongoing efforts to reposition existing space so that it is more functional and valuable in attracting and retaining talent. However, what used to be a straightforward exercise of analyzing space needs around occupancy has shifted.

How are CRE professionals wading through this new landscape and optimizing their portfolios to best suit both their business's and employees’ needs? Tune in to CoreNet Global's insightful panel discussion as we discuss the role of CRE professionals in this rapidly evolving field.

The commercial real estate (CRE) profession is at an inflection point. We’re facing two challenges: Historic occupancy data went out the window with the pandemic, and the hybrid workplace is in flux. The critical question then becomes how to forecast space demand with so much uncertainty in front of us. The answer is with real-time behavioral data. Leveraging the facts about how and why people are using spaces can keep CRE relevant and ahead of the curve as it realigns occupancy amid a constantly shifting landscape.

Attracting and retaining the best and the brightest talent costs money. The Great Resignation has added a new set of data to consider in the value of the workplace. Recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, used by The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), reports that this “quitter market” has increased throughout the age of COVID. By November 2021, 3 percent of the U.S. workforce voluntarily resigned their work, topping 4.5 million individuals who quit their job in one month. The cost of losing employees is profound. Gallup estimates that, “The cost of replacing an individual employee can range from one-half to two times the employee’s annual salary – and that’s a conservative estimate.”

The idea of sustainability has been around long enough for it to become institutionalized. As such, many of the elective metrics used by companies to differentiate themselves in the workplace have become part of the basic regulations needed to complete any new project, particularly in states like California, Washington, and New York. This reality, coupled with the imperative to get employees out of their houses and back to the workplace, has created a need for new guidelines that go beyond the original concept of sustainability – ones that incorporate the health and well-being of employees and exceed the traditional sustainability needs directed by laws and regulations. Going beyond sustainability will give real estate companies back the competitive edge that has been diminishing with conventional sustainability compliance.

SoftBank Robotics America (SBRA) will share the current state of robotics and automation at large and the impact it will have on the ecosystem of connected buildings and smart cities. As the CRE industry sees significant changes in the way buildings are used and the expectations of the workforce, CRE professionals demand innovation that can keep up without increasing costs. SBRA realizes the immense future opportunities for robotics and AI to drive productivity across all industries and has already demonstrated this impact in areas such as retail, finance, and healthcare. Already, Pepper, SBRA's humanoid robot, has proven to enhance the employee and customer experience, while also generating meaningful new customer interactions and product promotions–both of which help drive more business. Later this year, SBRA will be announcing new products that speak to the broad range of automation opportunities, especially for CRE professionals, including robot specifically for commercial buildings. SBRA will discuss the responsibility robotics companies have to stop developing products in a vacuum and figure out how their products can work-- across various platforms and with other products-- to make AI truly functional and augment the current industry workforce and corporate real estate innovation at large.

As one of the fastest growing cities in America, transportation is quickly becoming a major initiative for Seattle companies in the battle to recruit and retain talent.
