During the initial COVID outbreak in the spring of 2020, I started recording my reading of novels that I use in my American Lit class. Now, it is the fall, and we are attempting in-person instruction. While many of my students are able to attend class daily, others are not. This "podcast" is one attempt to connect with them through my voice.
Roger Chillingworth aka Mr. Prynne - Hester's Prynne
Hester is still in prison.
Hester makes a deal with Roger Chillingworth.
A leech is a blood-sucking parasite but also a nickname for a physician.
Hester stands on scaffold.
Governor Bellingham, Reverend Wilson, and Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale demand that she name the father of her child.
Hester refuses to tell them who the father of her child is.

We meet two new characters: Klipspringer "the boarder," and Meyer Wolfsheim, a gambler.
Nick talks about what else he did during his summer in New York and also about Jordan Baker.
Nick and Tom meet Myrtle Wilson. Tom tells her to meet him in the City. They then go to an apartment that Tom rents for himself and Myrtle. Myrtle invites the McKees as well as her sister Catherine.
Tom Buchanan's mistress Myrtle Wilson is introduced in this chapter. She lives in an area between Long Island and New York City called "The Valley of Ashes." Her husband, George, runs an automotive garage located in The Valley of Ashes.
