Katie Hawkins reminds us that if we aren't speaking for ourselves, someone else is speaking for us, and they may not be saying what we want. Today talk about what Katie does currently in policy and where it all started. Like most stories we share, it wasn't a straight path to get to where she is. Katie shares her journey from the outdoor retail industry to advocating for outdoor policy where imposter syndrome isn't a strange feeling for her, but she doesn't let it stop her from forging ahead. Katie also emphasizes our voices matter and it is more important than ever to use them for whatever it is you care about most.
Katie is a nationally recognized female leader in the outdoor industry and currently spearheads the advocacy efforts for Outdoor Alliance in California. Through this work, Katie leads the organization's efforts in securing robust conservation goals, advancing nature-based solutions to combat the climate crisis, and ensuring that America’s public lands and waters are safe, welcoming, and equitable for all to enjoy. Katie was reappointed by Governor Newsom to his outdoor recreation commission for boating and waterways, serves on the states leadership committee to advance the global initiative 30x30, and was accepted into the 2024 – 2025 Obama Foundation USA Leaders program. Katie lives in the heart of the Sierra Nevada mountains with her husband and two active boys.

This week we have Mallory Ottariano, founder of Youer, an apparel company Based out of Missoula, Montana. Youer is more than a clothing company though. They are on a mission to change the industry and the way people believe in themselves. The Youer team believes that confident people go out and change the world and it’s their job to provide you with the tools to do so!
Mallory shares her journey from architecture and design to starting her own, hand-made apparel company, and traveling all over the country slanging her clothes at events. She always had a passion for fashion and being unique by putting her own spin on trends. We talk about clothing as a form of self-expression and the power it holds in making us feel incredible or terrible about ourselves.
We also chat about the need for mindful consumerism and the impact of clothing on the environment. Mallory highlights the challenges and advantages of manufacturing in the US, including the ability to maintain quality control and support local communities. All of Youer’s pieces are printed, cut, and sewn in the U.S.A. and many of their fabrics are made here as well. In fact, a majority of their product is made in Missoula at the Youniverse, their very own factory! They just opened a brand new spot, if you are in Missoula, you have to check it out!

Heather Kelly of Heather’s Choice is back with Tarin, this time, IN PERSON! It was such a cool experience to get to record in person and to have Heather back to give us an update since her first episode in February. A lot has happened for her and the business since then, like an appearance on Shark Tank! Heather’s Choice is continuing to grow and we dive into the challenges small businesses face with raising capital, fundraising, cash flow, and simply staying afloat.
Heather has been boots to the ground since day 1 of her company. She is full of grit and perseverance. Her soul is wild and she is not willing to compromise her true value to make a buck. Heather is one of the more inspiring businesswomen I have had the pleasure to meet. She makes you believe that if you follow your heart and try your damnedest, it will be worth it in the end. We hope this episode inspires you to do just that ❤️

Today we have a great conversation with fellow outdoor enthusiast, Allison Deschaine. Tarin and Allison discuss their very similar paths with exploring “non-traditional” job options after college. In fact, both were in Alaska the same year working in the same industry as one of their first gigs in the outdoor industry!
We talk about taking these “alternative” paths and how even in your mid-thirties (or any age!), it’s ok to change it up and try something new. Especially if something isn’t working for you, even if it was/is the business you built. The outdoor industry is talked about a lot, specifically repping and buying as Allison has experience through both those realms. Through this conversation we hope to relate to anyone feeling like they aren’t on the traditional path and are unsure about what their “forever” career is, or if that even exists. We also hope to encourage supporting small businesses and women in the industry!

This week gets deeeep with our guest, Sam Ryan. We met Sam at the Sturdy Dirty and hit it off instantly. Our conversation covers so many topics from raising kiddos to experiencing the best bike party in the desert, Roam Fest.
Sam gets incredibly vulnerable sharing her story of realizing her late-in-life lesbian identity. Her realization of this and the changes she made take incredible courage. We hope that this convo can relate to anyone out there who is at a point in life of feeling a major change happening, or one that needs to happen. This can range from change in relationships – friends, family, romantic – to career changes. It’s not all about the courage in coming out, it’s about the courage to change a piece of your identity. Many of us often identify too much with external things that are not actual a piece of us. They don’t change or make who we are at our core. It’s ok to change your path in life. It’s not always easy, but it is ok.

Today’s episode talks about the tiny steps it takes to make a leap of faith. It’s not always a blind jump off of a cliff and it’s perfectly fine to take time to find your footing and change direction. Anastasia Allison, founder of Kula Cloth, shares how when she was younger and looking for validation from the outside, she did what she thought she “should”. Limiting beliefs kept her dreams dormant until looking the biggest fear, or what should have been, straight in the eyes.
This moment impacted her for a long time and eventually helped her take small steps to discover what she truly wanted to do in life. Her vision became clearer and she started to see things differently and have new doors open. Kula Cloth was born out of passion, a true need, and love for the outdoors.

We are joined by Maria Boustead of Po Campo today to talk about how a want & need sparked her motivation to start her own business. Bike bags have been around a long time, but Maria wasn’t quite finding what she needed to fit her lifestyle. She had the bike, but she needed the perfect bag. As a cyclist and a professional industrial designer, she had a lot to carry—from commuting and working to meeting up with friends. She needed a versatile bag that could keep up with her busy day and still look great.
Po Campo merges Maria’s expertise in product design with her passion for cycling. Unable to find a bag that seamlessly transitioned from bike to everyday use, she decided to create one herself. Say goodbye to sweaty straps, distractions, and dull colors with Po Campo.

We had an amazing conversation with Taylor-Anne Smith, founder of Ride Force, about inclusivity, discovering mountain biking, and finding your people. All of us have had our own experiences with ill-fitting gear, especially as women in typically male-dominated sports. Taylor-Anne shares how she got into mountain biking, the start of her amazing brand, and some fun stuff on the horizon.
Ride Force was born out of wanting EVERY. BODY. to feel badass on a bike while focusing on the trail and not the fit of your gear. Taylor-Anne is doing phenomenal at this and supporting many different organizations to help mountain biking be more accessible to all.

Tamara Jacobi, owner of the Tailwind Jungle Lodge and author of the book Wildpreneurs, shares her journey of starting a jungle eco-lodge in Mexico and becoming (a term she coined) a Wildpreneur. Raised by very adventurous parents who considered backpacking or bike-packing for a month (or 2) a typical family adventure led her to write up the business plan for a jungle lodge in college and create that business when she was just 21.
For nearly 20 years, Tamara has been learning lessons as she goes, creating a road of her own. This is ultimately what inspired her to write her book to offer insights and advice for those looking to start their own off-the-beaten-track business. She is also the guide community leader and head of accommodation partnerships at Thermal – a company offering private surf adventures.

I met Natalie back in 2018 at a gym in Truckee, CA where we were both working. This girl was the epitome of what my idea of a personal trainer was. I was awestruck. Then I met her, and was even more in love with this human! Her energy is contagious and she is the kindest most compassionate human. It didn’t take long before I learned about the loss of her brother on his first tour in the Army and uncovered layers of Natalie and how this was the catalyst for the way she lives her life today and the pursuits she takes on, like climbing Denali at the end of May.
Natalie found mountaineering in 2020 and found it to be incredibly healing for her. After a bit of a hiatus, she got back to it and set her sights on climbing Denali. The fact that it requires you to be entirely self-sufficient and in addition to carrying a heavy pack, you are also responsible for hauling a sled up the mountain, was appealing to her.
“This climb represents so much more than a summiting a mountain. It exemplifies the hardships faced when losing a loved one, the hurdles one must overcome in order to enter a space of healing and the community it requires in order to tackle such a feat.” – Natalie
Natalie is doing this climb to create awareness around Gold Star Families and Gold Star Sisters especially. She aims to raise 10k to sponsor a weekend retreat in the beautiful Bavarian village of Leavenworth, WA. The event will be an all-expense paid weekend for 6 sisters: 3 Gold Star sisters, 2 active duty sisters & one veteran sister. Please donate here to help Natalie reach her goal! She only has 2k to go!

This week we had the Amazing Jen Kates of Shift Human Performance on the podcast! Jen has been a coach for over 15 years and has over 35 years of training experience by being a nerd on all things strength training and nutrition. Before starting Shift Human Performance, she worked in public health and biotech research for over 12 years. Now she helps humans get strong to shred!
In 2016 she was seeking to get out of the biotech industry and to chase her calling of being a coach full-time, so she made the leap and hasn’t looked back since! She saw the importance of both nutrition and physical training and longed to help busy professionals find a way to manage their health and wellness, sustainably. She is a mountain biker and loves spending time on two wheels on the dirt! We talk about strength training around mountain & gravel biking specifically and her amazing program, Shred Strong!

We wrap up Women’s History Month with this amazing conversation with Andrea Kelly! Andrea is the CEO, Founder, and Advisor for Make Plus Equal, a size-inclusion consultancy in the Apparel Industry. As a plus-sized person herself, Andrea pairs consumer insights of lived experiences – hers, and others in the plus-sized community – with over 20 years of experience building apparel in the outdoor industry. With the goal that every body deserves equal access and equal choice to the apparel they need, regardless of size, Andrea guides brands and retailers as they work to become more inclusive in the products they sell, along with how they engage with and cater to a traditionally marginalized and overlooked community.
In this episode, we talk about personal experiences in finding outdoor gear and apparel that fit and function how they should. As well as how Andrea found herself starting her business and only more recently made it her full-time job. Proving that no matter what age you are, if you have a passion, a goal, a dream, and some fire behind it all, anything is possible.
Andrea was also voted by Outside Business Journal as one of 2022’s Twenty Most Influential People in the Outdoor Industry!

Spring is right around the corner, meaning so is mountain bike season! We are excited to chat with Cassie Abel of Wild Rye this week. Cassie has dedicated the last decade of her career to elevating women from the backcountry to the boardroom. After years of feeling like an afterthought in the outdoor space, Cassie founded Wild Rye in 2016 to bring women better apparel options for cycling, snowsports, and general outdoor recreation.
Wild Rye crafts women’s-first outdoor apparel that’s beautiful and technical, designed to inspire confidence and welcome more women into the outdoors. In addition, Cassie is the brains behind Women Led Wednesday, a Tory Burch Foundation fellow, a Forbes Next 1,000 honoree, The Outdoor Retailer Emerging Leader of 2023, a 3x All-American Lacrosse player, and a mom to 4-year-old Sawyer.
This episode will get you amped for biking and light that fire to take a chance on something you maybe didn’t know was your calling after all.

Happy Women’s History Month! For our first episode of this month, we have Carina Hamel, co-founder of Bivo. In this episode, Carina shares her journey from working in product development to developing her very own product. After realizing most performance hydration options were all made of plastic, and a very bad drinking experience from an old cross-country ski belt, Carina and her husband set out to change things.
In creating Bivo, they sought to design a stainless steel performance water bottle with a flow rate that could keep up with that of the plastic bottles on the market. That goal wasn’t only reached but surpassed. With Bivo there is no chugging, no air, no mold, just a clean path of water delivered with ease.
Carina and Tarin talk about where it all started. From when Carina was cross-country skiing as a little girl to how her children now ski in the same program her family started when she was young and her journey through the work world to starting her own business. Listen in and check out their amazing products that are far more than a simple cycling bottle!

Another ‘dreams come true moment’ for the Tarin It Up Podcast with this conversation with Dovetail Workwear co-founder, Kate Day! Tarin had the absolute pleasure of meeting Kate last summer on a trip up to Washington. Tarin is a sales representative and ambassador for the brand, however, not every sales rep or ambassador gets the chance for in-person meetings, so this was an amazing opportunity – as was this chance to have Kate on the podcast!
We chat about how the brand was born and where it is heading with continuing to be pioneers not only in the women’s workwear niche but in women’s apparel in general. They are continuously working to provide women with the workwear they need by reading each and every review they receive and taking the feedback constructively. One of my favorite things about having this podcast is getting to talk to my friends and share the things they are wildly passionate about and the amazing things they are doing. I met Alix in 2018 on a women’s mountain bike group ride. I couldn’t wait to try her amazing products sourced from right here in the Sierra Nevada from her company, Tahoe Petrichor.
To this day, Alix is still handmaking every one of her products herself. She has some very exciting things coming up including opportunities for her Releaf Rollie (my favorite product) to be clinically tested! Tune in to learn about her journey and amazing products. Check them out online here: https://www.tahoepetrichor.com/
Alix also just wrote a book! Adventure to Wellness: A Pain Management Playbook is an all-in-one gratitude journal, goal setter, pain symptom tracker, affirmation guide, and complementary alternative medicine workbook! This is an empowering self-paced wellness activity book that will give you science-based insight into vitamins, supplements, and herbal medicines as well as anti-inflammatory habits and transformative efforts to allow you to thrive and keep your pain in check. Many of us have been in a situation that when you gotta go, you gotta go! Or when you gotta go, there is no where to drop trow without bearing all. This is where Gnara comes in! Gnara co-founder, Georgia Grace, got the idea for the GoFly – Gnara’s internationally patented zipper technology – while working as a glacier guide in Alaska. Frustrated by having to choose between tactical dehydration or the freezing hassle that was using the bathroom outside, she and eventually, a small team, set out to make the outdoors more accessible through innovative and inclusive design.
Gnara’s GoFly Tech has won the 2022 and 2023 Outdoor Retailer Awards, as well as Top Product Awards and recognition by Women’s Health, CNN, USA Today, GearJunkie, the U.S. Senate, Forbes, Blister, Outside Business Journal, and more. This week, Tarin dives into period talk with Angie Marie and they discuss our inner seasons and a way of living seasonally (so to speak).
They also discuss the importance of doing what is right for YOU. Learn and educate yourself then use methods that fit into your life. Also, don’t feel like there is a wrong or right way to cycle sync! We all know we are evolving humans and day to day things can look and feel different. Learn more from Angie Marie by following her, checking out her resources on her website, and by Pre-ordering her book, The Cycle Syncing Handbook!

Welcome storyteller, speaker, mama, and entrepreneur Madelaine Anderson to this week’s episode! Madelaine has a film company, a podcast, and teaches folks how to tell their own impactful stories. Tarin and Madelaine met at Swell as she was creating videos for Swell and Outspring, capturing the essence of the event and bringing real-time storytelling to the event as she interviewed attendees.
In her podcast, The Wild We Share, she and her husband share stories about getting their little one out into the wild and teaching her all about the natural world and how she can be a part of it and help protect it. We also get to hear about Madelaine and Amber’s first (awful) experiences getting their little ones out and how, or why, they decided to keep going despite the challenges. Madelaine also offers tidbits on how to start getting outside with your child if you haven’t yet.

This week, we got to hear from professional snowboarder, Erika Vikander. We spoke about equality in the sport and so much more!
Growing up in the shadow of the Bridger Mountains amongst the bigger Rocky Mountains in Montana, the seed of big mountain snowboarding was planted early. Erika spent her formative years in Bozeman honing her skills before pursuing a Slopestyle career in Park City and Breckenridge. Just before the 2014 Olympics where Slopestyle was first introduced she tore her ACL and had to reconsider her path in snowboarding. This led her to performing as one of the top competitors on the Freeride World Tour for 6 seasons representing the USA and moving into the backcountry to push her boundaries while staying true to herself and what she believes in.

Burnout has been a bit of a buzzword but did you know it is actually recognized by the World Health Organization? In 2019, the World Health Organization included burnout in the 11th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases as an occupational phenomenon. Our guest Julia Arndt comes on to discuss her personal experience with burnout and how it led her to starting her business and becoming a Peak Performance Coach.
Julia originally hails from Germany, has lived in 5 countries over the past 15 years, and speaks three languages fluently. After working at Google in Silicon Valley for seven and a half years while the company grew from 30.000 to 100.000 employees, Julia has been running her own consulting and coaching business since 2019, helping over 8000 employees at innovative companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft and other Fortune 500 companies understand the effects of stress on body and mind, move beyond burnout and build a mindful lifestyle that delivers focus, high energy, and productivity. She approaches professional development from a different lens – combining mindfulness, productivity, and leadership tools to encourage and support you to live a more meaningful, connected, and happy life.

Happy New Year! Maybe some of you are ready to grab the bull by the horns and take this year by storm. Maybe some of you, like us, woke up Sunday, January 1st, feeling like it was just another day. The holidays have taken us by storm and we are exhausted, so pardon us for not coming out swinging with resolutions, finite goals, or divine epiphanies. But, we know there are plenty of you who feel the same. And guess what, that’s ok, CAUSE WE ARE JUST HUMAN BEINGS! If you are into the “new year, new me” good for you! Seriously, we hope you reach all of your goals. But we are also here for those of you who are just trying to get by.
Remember, you can support our little indie pod by donating to our Buy Me A Coffee page.
Enjoy the show!

Ahhh, balance…and the seemingly never-ending search for it. We all seem to be looking for it and craving it, but what is it really? Will we ever really find it? Personally, I think balance is different for every person and it’s not always equal parts. In this episode, we talk with Charlotte, founder of The Ski Retreat. She talks about her two (seemingly conflicting) dreams of being a boss lady and a ski bum. Listen in to find out how she started this passion project while working full-time and where she sees the future of it.
Learn more about The Ski Retreat here and how you can be a part of this fabulous weekend. Follow her on IG at @theskiretreat.
The next retreat is in Tahoe, January 19-22, 2023 (hint: as of 12/28/22 there are still 2 open spots!!!)

We had a wonderful chat with Tami Jo, the founder of The Outspring. The Outspring is a discovery platform of outdoor brands made for and by women. In this episode, we get to know Tami and what inspired her to take some leaps of faith in business and personal experiences. Like taking on The Rebelle Rally, an all-women, off-road navigation rally for 1600 miles through California and Nevada, using only map and compass, with no prior off-roading experience. This is the first of a series of episodes we will have with Tami Jo as we follow her journey in creating an in-person event for The Outspring this coming year.

Hey everyone! Here is the first episode. Nothing too exciting to be honest, just me and one of my best friends having a conversation. Talking about where the last couple of years have led us, where we are now, and where we want to be. This episode is like listening in with your pals, so if you want to be a part of the conversation, listen in! I bet you can relate to a lot of this, which is what we are all about!
