Episode #7 - Catherine Dunne and Cat Hogan
This month we a joined in the attic by novelists Catherine Dunne and Cat Hogan.
Catherine had just published her tenth novel and Cat her first, so they compare notes on their experiences of the life of the novelist in Ireland. Cat speaks about the roller coaster ride for the debut novelist, while Catherine offers some advice about where to get ideas and and how to keep on going.
The Poetry Divas and Tommy Keyes
This month on the Attic Sessions we have a performance special with appearances by The Poetry Divas and Tommy Keyes.
The Poetry Divas - Kate Dempsey, Barbara Smith and Maeve O'Sullivan - perform a unique set of poems about family, friends and the 'odd' terms we use for female appendages. Tommy Keyes performs a song called 'Surprised by Joy' from his album 'Some of These Stories Are True'.
At the John Hewitt Summer School
This month we though we would try something completely different and report from one of Ireland's most inspiring Summer Schools, The John Hewitt Society International Summer School in Armagh City.
Now in its 29th year, the John Hewitt Summer School features talks, readings, theatre, music, discussions and workshops in a unique blend of culture and creativity.
In what was a packed week of events, we managed to talk to writers Carlo Gebler, Maureen Boyle and Malachi O'Docherty about their work, and film readings by Ciaran Carson, Eileen Ni Chuilleanain, Tom French, Martina Devlin, Rita Ann Higgins, Grace Wells. We also got to hear Donal Ryan give a sneak preview from his forthcoming novel 'All We Shall Know' (an Attic Session exclusive!).
Maria McManus & Stephen Connolly
In The Attic Sessions this month, we talk about the poetry scene in Northern Ireland. Belfast poets Maria McManus and Stephen Connolly talk about the experience for poets now compared with twenty years ago and the issues around anthologies and read from their own work.
Louise Phillips & Paul Perry
In the Attic Sessions this month, we talk about the Irish crime writing genre known as Emerald Noir. Louise Phillips talks about her approach to writing crime fiction and gives us an exclusive sneak preview of the opening chapter from her current novel in progress and Paul Perry talks about being one half of the crime writing duo Karen Perry and reads from their latest thriller ‘Girl Unknown’.
Tony Curtis & Dermot McLaughlin
We talk about becoming part of the tradition of music playing and poetry writing and what those two art forms have in common. We also talk about the role memory plays in passing on tradition.
Dermot plays some traditional airs and Tony reads 'The Mole and the Cosmos', 'A Blessing of Things Well Made' and 'Tunes Carried on the Night Air' from his latest poetry collection 'Approximately in the Key of C' (ARC Publications, 2015).

Lia Mills
We are joined by the wonderful Lia Mills, author of Fallen, this year’s Dublin: One City One Book selection. We talk about the inspiration for Fallen, the commemoration of 1916, the importance of the role women played during the period and this year’s inaugural Two Cities One Book festival, which twins book clubs in Dublin and Belfast.
